James Barr Jessup
03/24/1911 - 7/14/2004

James B. Jessup, 93, of Scottsbluff, died Wednesday, July 14, 2004 at Heritage Health Care Center in Gering. A family and friends gathering to celebrate his life will be held on August 14, 2004 at the Village at Regional West from 2p.m until 4p.m. Cremation was held at Sunset Memorial Park Crematory.
He was born March 24, 1911 near Minatare, Nebraska, to Frank P. and Marie (Barr) Jessup. He attended the Horseshoe Bend School and graduated from Banner County High School in Harrisburg.
After school he continued living and farming on his parents' Horseshoe Bend homestead, during which time he met and courted Mary B. Petrie of Denver. They were married in Denver July 14, 1935, and lived on the homestead where their daughter Evelyn and son Alan were born. In 1941 the family moved to Denver where James worked in the Burlington Railroad Shops and learned welding. The family moved to California during World War II, where James worked in the shipyards building Liberty Ships. Their son John was born in Concord, California in 1944.
After the war the family returned to the homestead until 1952 when Frank P. Jessup retired as Banner County Clerk and James was appointed to finish his father's term. The family moved to Harrisburg, and James was re-elected to numerous terms as Banner County Clerk until 1965, when he joined the new Banner County Bank in Harrisburg as Cashier, from which he retired in 1976.
James and Mary spent the next 15 summers back on the homestead and winters in Mesa, Arizona before moving to the Village at Regional West in 1991.
James is survived by his wife, Mary B. Jessup of Scottsbluff; son Alan J. Jessup and his wife, Susan, of Laguna Niguel, California, son John F. Jessup of Kansas City, Missouri, son-in-law Richard L. Wyatt of La Quinta, California; grandchildren Karen Wyatt, Sandra Nyeholt and her husband Douglas, Steve Jessup, Scott Jessup and his wife Andrea and Sally Jessup; and great-grandchildren Jameson and Taylor Nyeholt, Cailin and Colin Jessup; all of California.
James B. Jessup was preceded in death by his parents, daughter Evelyn Wyatt, brother Charles, and sisters Mary Alice Burchfield, Louise McBride and Geraldine Jessup.

Steven L. Peters
12/04/1951 - 7/16/2004

Steven L. Peters, 52 formerly of Bayard, Nebraska died Friday, July 16, 2004 at his home in Las Vegas, Nevada.
His funeral service will be held Friday, July 23, 2004 at 2:00 p.m. at Gering Memorial Chapel with Pastor Linda Battello officiating. Interment will be at West Lawn cemetery in Gering. Friends may call Thursday from 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Gering Memorial Chapel.
Steven was born on December 4, 1951 in Scottsbluff, Nebraska to Ronald and Patricia (Raney) Peters. He attended grade school and high school in Gering, graduating in 1970. He attended Kearney State College 1971-1974. In 1975, he attended the Elkins Institute in Denver and received his 1st Class Radio Telephone License from FCC. He worked in various locations as a COE Equipment Installer, the last 6 years in Las Vegas, Nevada.
He married Kathleen Smith on November 22, 1989 in Gering and had two daughters Amy and Sarah.
He loved fishing, hunting and spending time at Lake Minatare. From a very early age, music and playing the guitar brought him much pleasure.
Steven is survived by his spouse Kathleen Peters and daughters Amy and Sarah all of Bayard; parents Ronald and Patricia Peters of Gering; sisters Sandra Block and husband Maurice of Yakima, WA and Sylvia Bamrick and husband Robert of Scottsbluff; two nieces and two nephews.
His paternal and maternal grandparents preceded him in death

Friends may call Thursday from 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Gering Memorial Chapel.

Kathrine M. Geil
06/01/1913 - 7/28/2004

Kathrine M. Geil, 91 of Gering, Nebraska died Wednesday, July 28, 2004 at Northfield Villa Medical Center.
A memorial service will be held Monday, August 2, 2004 at 2:00 p.m. at Northfield Villa Chapel with Pastor James Rowe officiating. A private family interment will be at West Lawn cemetery in Gering.
She was born on June 1, 1913 at Lewellen, Nebraska to Benjamin and Rosa (Hehriggel) Beaird. She graduated from Gering High School. She married Donald A. Geil on July 3, 1940 at Los Angeles, CA. and made their home in Albuquerque, New Mexico. She was a 4-H Leader for many years and passed on sewing and food preservation training to many young 4-H’rs. She also was very active in the Santa Maria Church.
Kathrine is survived by her husband Donald; daughter and husband Vickie Ann (Geil) and Bob Perce of Lindstrom, MN; son and daughter-in-law Gerry and Marlene Geil of Iuka, MS.; sister Irene (Beaird) Zarsky of Torrance, CA.; six grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents and ten brothers and sisters.
Visitation: Gering Memorial Chapel
Saturday 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., Sunday 1:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. and Monday 9:00 a.m. to noon at Gering Memorial Chapel.

Doris Louise Corbin
01/02/1916 - 8/4/2004

Doris Louise (Sloan) Corbin, 88 of Beverly Health Care Center went to her eternal rest in God’s arms Wednesday morning, August 04, 2004.
A memorial service will be held Wednesday, August 11, 2004 at 11:00 a.m. at Gering Memorial Chapel. Inurnment will be at Washington City cemetery, Washington, Kansas at a later date. Cremation was held at Sunset Memorial Park Crematory.
Doris was born on January 3, 1916 in Red Oak, Iowa to Ora Thomas and Clara Bell (Woods) Sloan.
She was married October 26, 1935 to James Lamar Corbin of Washington, Kansas.
Doris, beloved mother, wife and friend is survived by her husband James “Mike” Corbin of Beverly Health Care Center, Scottsbluff; sons Jerry and wife Linda Corbin of Mitchell and James “Jim” Corbin of Gering. Doris also leaves behind two beautiful grandchildren Joseph “Joe” Corbin of Mitchell and Claudia Davis of West Haven, Conn. She was the proud great grandmother of Jesse L. Corbin of Mitchell and DeGrant M. Davis of West Haven, Conn.
Doris is preceded in death by her precious daughter Wanda, two brothers Dean and Clark Sloan, her parents Ora Sloan and Clara Bell (Woods) Sloan.

Mary E. Ouderkirk
04/28/1947 - 8/20/2004

Mary E. Ouderkirk, 57 of Gering, Nebraska died Friday, August 20, 2004 at the University of Colorado Hospital in Denver.
Her funeral service will be held Tuesday, August 24, 2004 at 10:30 a.m. at Central Church of Christ in Gering with Pastor Victor McPeak officiating. Interment will be at West Lawn cemetery.
Mary was born on April 28, 1947 in Scottsbluff, Nebraska to William and Esther (Henderson) Schleicher. She graduated form high school in Banner County and attended Western Nebraska Community College for 2 years. She worked at various jobs working with the public.
She was united in marriage to Ernest Ouderkirk on June 14, 2003 in Gering.
Mary was a member of the Central Church of Christ and was committed to her church in all aspects.
She enjoyed leatherwork and loved her family.
Mary is survived by her husband Ernest; son and daughter-in-law Mike and Chris Odell of Lyons, Colorado and daughter Kelly Fairchild of Des Moines, Iowa; two grandchildren Logan and Hailey Odell; brothers and sister Lynn Schleicher of Sidney, Gary (Lynnette) Schleicher of Gering and Geno (Gary) Rask of Denver; step children Vickie Ouderkirk of Gering and Todd (Denise) Ouderkirk of Gering; three step grandchildren Rhianon Schmidt, Brandy Ouderkirk and Cassy Ouderkirk; one step great granddaughter and special friend Chelsa Lacey of Gering.
She was preceded in death by her parents.

Lawrence Michael "Kano Cain
10/10/1951 - 8/26/2004

Lawrence Michael Cain " Kano ", 53, formerly of Scottsbluff, died August 26, 2004 at Providence Alaska Medical Center in Anchorage, Alaska, surrounded by family, after a short illness. A memorial service will be held at the Gering Memorial Chapel, Friday, September 10, 2004 at 2:00 pm with Father Gerald Harr officiating. His remains will be entered into rest at West Lawn cemetery in Gering. A gathering at the Eagles will follow the service for family and friends. Casual attire requested.
Mike was born March 10, 1951 in Grand Island. He attended school in Gering, and then lived in Scottsbluff before moving to Alaska in 1983. He worked for Al’s Diesel Works as a diesel mechanic, until his illness forced him to retire. He enjoyed camping, playing horseshoes and he was an avid sports fan. Mike was a man with a heart of gold and would give you the shirt off his back if you needed it.
He is survived by his sons Nicholas Cain of Anchorage, Tim Cain of Omaha, Rick Cain of Lincoln and daughter Tifani (Erik) Franklin of Scottsbluff. Brothers Sam (Snook) Cain of Guthrie, Ok.,Tom (Karin) Cain and Pat Donald Cain of Scottsbluff. Sisters Mary (Paul) Frederick of Green Cove Springs, Fl., Jackie (Larry) Kuxhausen, Charlene (Bill) Bernhardt and Katie Cain all of Scottsbluff, Sheila (Al) Warfield of Anchorage and sister-in-law Janet Miller of Scottsbluff.. Three grandchildren, Hailey, Emily and Trey. Along with several aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews and many friends.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Lawrence "Pat" and Maureen Cain, Brother John Orville Cain, and brother-in-laws Duane Brown and Dennis Palmer.

Joyce E. Sandberg
08/22/1930 - 9/6/2004

Joyce Sandberg, 74, of Gering died Monday, September 6, 2004 at Heritage Health Care Center in Gering. Funeral services will be 10:00 a.m. Friday, September 10, 2004 at Central Church of Christ in Gering with Pastor Gerald Parriott officiating. Interment will be held at West Lawn cemetery in Gering.
Joyce was born August 22, 1930 in Scottsbluff, NE to Frank and Florence (Davies) Rickard. She grew up and attended school in the Lake Alice Community and graduated from Scottsbluff High School. She married Larry Sandberg October 15, 1950 and to this union four children were born. Joyce helped her husband Larry at Sandberg Implement Co for many years. Her biggest joy in life was raising her children and being a devoted mother and grandmother She and Larry were baptized in the Christian Faith on April 12, 1960 at the Central Church of Christ in Gering.
Joyce was a member of the Central Church of Christ, 4-H leader, Den Mother for Cub Scouts, Camp Fire Leader and was a n avid bowler for many years.
She is survived by her children: Janis Lofing, Kevin and Karla Sandberg, and Kelly and Crystal Sandberg all of Gering; son-in-law: Gary Diffendaffer of Littleton, CO; grandchildren: Tyler Sandberg, Trenton Sandberg, Phillip Sandberg, Ryan Sandberg and Jillian Diffendaffer.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, daughter Joy Beth Sandberg, brother; Jack Rickard and sister: Willa Apperson.
Visitation: Gering Memorial Chapel
Friends may call Gering Memorial Chapel Thursday 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. and an hour before the service on Friday.
Memorials have been established to Prairie Haven Hospice or to the Joyce Sandberg Alzheimer’s Fund.

Ruth Wilma Corcoran
01/15/1909 - 9/11/2004

Ruth Wilma Corcoran, 95, of Gering, died Saturday, Sept. 11, 2004 at Heritage Health Care Center in Gering. A funeral mass will be held 10 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 14, 2004 at Christ The King Catholic Church in Gering with Fr. Gerald Harr officiating.
Ruth was born Jan. 15, 1909, the eldest child of nine children born to Charles N. and Maude M. (Oelkers) Rogers, on her grandfather’s farm in Cloud County, Kansas near the town of Clyde. She attended grade school in Cloud County till the age of eleven years. The family moved to Trego County in Western Kansas where she resumed her schooling and attended high school in Herndon, Kansas.
Ruth loved music and singing and began piano lessons at the age of five. In her early teens she played piano at the silent movies in the local theatre. She and her father played in a local dance band and played for dances in many western Kansas towns.
In 1929 she moved to McCook, and started working for Northwestern Bell Telephone Co. She met her future husband, James Corcoran, who was attending McCook Junior College at the time. They were married Dec. 12, 1930 in St. Patrick’s Catholic Church. She continued working part time for the telephone company and in 1943 worked for the U.S. Air Force in the Communications Department at the McCook Air Force Base. In 1951 the couple moved to Mitchell where they lived for 12 years then moved to the Scottsbluff-Gering area in 1963. She worked for J.C. Penney Co in Scottsbluff for 10 years retiring in 1974.
Ruth was a member of Christ the King and Altar Society of Gering.
She is survived by her daughter: JoAnn Duke of Gering, two brothers: Bill Rogers and wife Cula of Orrstown, Pa., and LaVern Rogers and wife Fran of Los Alamos, NM; three sisters: Erma Hillman, Powell, Wyo., Jean Bottger and husband Blair of Yakima, Wash. and Betty Rhoades of Wakeeney, Kan.; grandchildren: Diane McKnight and husband James of Scottsbluff, Dr. Shannon Black and husband Scott of Lincoln, and Jim Warburton and wife Liz of Gering; great grandsons: Jason, RJ and Raymond Runge , Tyler Rosenau, Jesse and Daniel Warburton and Logan Black; great-great grandchildren: Christopher, and Courtney Runge, Donovan , Devin and Sidney Warburton, and Averi Runge., brother-in-law Charles Corcoran of Oberlin, Kan.; and a sister-in-law Linda Rogers of Worland, Wyo.
She was preceded in death by, her parents, husband James Oct. 15, 1989, an infant son Rodney, infant grandson, brother Warren Rogers and two sisters Mildred Gammon and Faith Rhoades.
Visitation: Gering Memorial Chapel
Friends may call at Gering Memorial Chapel between 10a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Monday.
Memorials may be made to Christ The King Church or to Prairie Haven Hospice.
