Richard Alden Lynch
09/17/1919 - 4/5/2004

Richard Alden Lynch, 84, of Gering, died Monday, April 5, 2004 at the Western Nebraska Veteran’s Home. Funeral services will be 2:00 P.M. Wednesday at the First Christian Church in Scottsbluff with Pastor Michael Stein officiating. Interment will b e in West Lawn cemetery in Gering with military rites by Admiral Dewey Post #1681 VFW. A memorial has been established to the First Christian Church.
Friends may call at Gering Memorial Chapel between 1:00 P.M.-8:00 P.M. Tuesday. The casket will be closed at the church. Tributes of sympathy may be left at www.geringchapel.com.
Richard was born September 17, 1919 in Scottsbluff to Robert and Edith (Andrews) Lynch. He was raised and attended school in Scottsbluff where he graduated from high school. He entered the Army July 19, 1941 and was honorably discharged September 24, 1945. He returned to Scottsbluff and married Mary Ann Leikam January 23, 1946 in Scottsbluff. He was employed by, the Bureau of Reclamation for over thirty years. He also worked for Great Western Sugar for ten years and also the United Telephone Co.
Richard was a lifelong member of the First Christian Church where he served as an elder, teacher, youth leader, choir member, and maintenanceman. He loved working the church yard and also gardening at home. He will be sadly missed by all of his grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Ann; daughters and sons-in-law: Patricia and Richard Kort of Mitchell, Linda and David Lueras of Gillette, WY and Jeanette Lynch of Cheyenne, WY; son: Larry Richard Lynch of Fresno, CA; Sister and brother-in-law: Elizabeth and Robert Memory of Clear Lake, CA; 6 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren and 8 nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his brother and his wife Phillip and Darlene Lynch of Ukiah, CA and sister and her husband: Roberta and Corwin Moon of Nampa, ID.
Visitation: Gering Memorial Chapel
Friends may call at Gering Memorial Chapel between 1:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m. Tuesday. The casket will be closed at the church.
A memorial has been established to the First Christian Church.

Clark Wesley Hartshorn, Jr.
10/05/1963 - 4/4/2004

Clark Wesley Hartshorn, Jr., 40 of Scottsbluff, Nebraska died Sunday, April 4, 2004 at his home. His funeral service will be held Thursday, April 8, 2004 at 10:00 a.m. at Gering Memorial Chapel with Pastor Victor McPeak officiating. Cremation will follow the service. Private family inurnment will be at West Lawn cemetery. Visitation will be Wednesday 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. at the chapel. Memorials have been established to the Education Fund for Shaylean and Trenton. Tributes of sympathy may be left at www.geringchapel.com .
Clark was born on October 5, 1963 in Scottsbluff, Nebraska to Clark W. Hartshorn, Sr. and Lawanda (Plueger) Hartshorn. He attended Gering grade school and Bluffs Middle School graduating in 1981 from Scottsbluff High School. He moved to Newcastle after graduation and helped his uncle Tad Hartshorn start a lumber mill. He returned to Scottsbluff area to work at Webers Furniture. He worked with his stepfather installing carpet, later installing “flooring” himself.
He married Patricia Smith on December 31, 1991 in Gering and had two children Shaylean and Trenton.
He was a very good artist and woodcraftsman. He enjoyed going to Sturgis and dreamed to own a Harley. He will be sadly missed.
Clark is survived by his children Shaylean and Trenton Hartshorn of Gering; mother and stepfather Lawanda and John Mendez of Gering; father and stepmother Clark “Jack and Bobbi Hartshorn of Scottsbluff; brothers Chad Hartshorn of Gering and David Mendez of Omaha, NE.; sisters Heidi Hartshorn of Scottsbluff, Vicki Hodge of Riverside, CA. and Lisa Miller of Tampa, FL.; special friend Sheila , nephew Trey Miller and nieces Alesia and Brylie Miller and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.
His paternal and maternal grandparents preceded him in death
Visitation: Gering Memorial Chapel
Visitation will be Wednesday 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Gering Memorial Chapel.
Memorials have been established to the Education Fund for Shaylean and Trenton.

Leroy A. Snow
03/02/1951 - 4/9/2004

Funeral services for Leroy A. Snow, 53 of Gering, Nebraska, who died Friday, April 9, 2004 at Regional West Medical Center in Scottsbluff will be held Thursday, April 15, 2004 at 2:00 P.M. at Gering Memorial Chapel with Rev. Victor McPeak officiating. Interment will be at West Lawn cemetery. A memorial has been established to the family at Gering Memorial Chapel and at the Rompus Room. Visitation will be Wed. 9-8p.m. at the chapel. .
He was born on March 2, 1951 in Fremont, CA. to Hubert and Ruth (Wilson) Snow. He studied Ministry in Nebraska. He married Lynda Cline on June 6, 1981 at Gering, and made their home in Gering. This is when he became a father to her three daughters: Crystal, Amy and Angie. Gering is where he became masonary of brick and stone work. He enjoyed fishing, especially Walleye and spending time with his many friends.
Survivors include: Lynda, one son, three daughters and their husbands, three grandsons, three granddaughters and one on the way, a brother and spouse and a sister and spouse, nieces, nephews, and numerous special friends with a special thanks to Donna.
He was preceded in death by his father, mother, brother, paternal and maternal grandparents.
He will be greatly missed and he was dearly loved. Think Snow.

Friends may call Wednesday 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
A memorial has been established to the family in care of Gering Memorial Chapel and the Rompus Room.

Melvin "Bill" W. Abel
06/11/1946 - 11/23/2004

Melvin Bill Abel, 58, of Gering, died Tuesday, November 23. 2004 at Heritage Health Care Center.
A memorial service will be held at 10:00 a.m. Friday, November 26, at Faith Lutheran Church in Gering with Pastor Richard Neugebauer and Pastor Ralph Morris officiating. Cremation has taken place at Sunset Memorial Park Crematory. Inurnment will be at West Lawn cemetery in Gering, NE. with military honors.
Mel was born on June 11, 1946 in Torrington, WY, to Dale and Emma Curly (Kirlin) Abel. He started school in Veteran, WY and moved to Broadwater, NE when he was in second grade. He attended Broadwater Public Schools until the high school closed in 1963. Mel graduated from Bridgeport High School in 1964 and joined the United States Air Force in February of 1966. Mel served one tour of duty in Vietnam and two tours in Korea before receiving an Honorable Discharge in May of 1975. On September 3, 1966, he married Sandi Simmons in Broadwater, NE. They had two children; Parrish and Crystal.
The Abel family settled in the Gering area in 1977, where Mel began working for Jirdon Agri Chemicals. Mabel, as good friends called him, was the sprayer man; if you had a dream for a sprayer, he built it. In the fall of 1999, a series of three strokes ended his 22 year career. Mel battled the effects of the strokes for 5 years, until God decided it was time to make him whole again and take him home.
Besides his family, friends and career, racing was his true passion. When Mel worked, he worked hard and when he played, he played hard. Mabel had one gear.fast! Mel spent a lot of time racing and winning at Oregon Trail Speedway. He was an officer of the Platte Valley Stock Car Club for more than 10 years. Mel was also a member of the Scotts Bluff County Ag. Society, when he and Lyle Hoke started the tradition of the Demolition Derby at the County Fair.
Mel will be remembered for his fighting spirit by those who knew and loved him, including his wife of 38 years, Sandi; his son and daughter-in-law, Parrish and Holly Abel and their family Chelsey, Courtney, Amber, Andrew and Hope; his daughter and son-in-law; Crystal and Robbie Newton and their family Kiersten and Katelyn; his mother, Curly Abel; his brothers, David and Dan; his sisters, Linda (Larry) Lojka and Vickie (Chyde) True; 8 nieces and nephews and numerous other extended family members and very special life-long friends.
He was preceded in death by his father Dale Abel, mother-in-law Edna Simmons, sister-in-law Connie Abel, best friend Bill Yeager and his grandparents.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Prairie Haven Hospice, Faith Lutheran Church and/or Gering Volunteer Fire Department.

Lester K. Rathman
11/17/1907 - 4/17/2004

Lester K. Rathman, 96, of Scottsbluff, died Saturday, April 17, 2004, at Regional West Medical Center. His Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Friday, April 23, at the First United Methodist Church in Gering with Pastor Linda Battello officiating. Interment will be at West Lawn cemetery in Gering. Friends may call at the Gering Memorial Chapel Thursday, April 22, from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.
Lester was born Nov. 17, 1907, in Doniphan, the son of John and Minnie (Khremke) Rathman. The family moved to the Banner County area when he was seven. Lester, his mother, and two brothers, came on a train to Kimball to meet his father, who had come ahead with the livestock. In a wagon, they traveled over fences on snowdrifts to their home west of Harrisburg, to find the door had blown open and the house was full of snow.
On Dec. 24, 1929, he married Regina (Jean) Brown, who was a schoolteacher in Banner County. They resided in Banner County and farmed and ranched until his retirement in 1980, when he spent many hours in his wood shop making things for his kids and grandkids.
They moved to the Residency in Scottsbluff in 1992, and he resided there until his death, but he never gave up his love of the farm.
Lester is survived by daughters and sons-in-law, Marjorie and Charles Smith, of Gering; Phyllis and Glenn Wendt, of Goodyear, Ariz.; and Judy and Jim Stauffer, of Banner County; nine grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren; sister, Agnes Wynne, of Banner County; and his extended family at the Residency.
He was preceded in death by his wife in April of 1993; brothers, Elmer and John; and sister, Ada Nighswonger.
Visitation: Gering Memorial Chapel
Friends may call Thursday, April 22, from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.
A memorial has been established to the Banner County Scholarship fund.

Gary A. Acker
06/27/1959 - 11/24/2004

Gary A. Acker, 45 of Sturgis, SD died Wednesday, November 24, 2004 at Sturgis, SD.
His funeral service will be held Tuesday, November 30, 2004 at 2:00 p.m. at St. Timothys Episcopal Church in Gering with Rev. Carol Ann Bullard officiating. Interment will be at West Lawn cemetery in Gering with military honors.
Gary was born on June 27, 1959 in Scottsbluff, Nebraska to James G. and Bonnie (Ebberson) Acker. He graduated from Gering High School in 1978 and entered the U.S. Navy. He was honorably discharged in 1978. Returning from the service, he attended Chadron State College majoring in music and library. He moved to Sturgis where he resided until his death.
Gary enjoyed music the love of his life, he taught himself to play the piano. He also enjoyed fishing and the outdoors. He especially loved his family and had a sense of humor. Gary had a strong faith and would like to visit with people about religion.
He is survived by his parents James and Bonnie Acker; sisters and brothers Karen (Lloyd) Bairn, Bob (Mary) Acker, Barb (Gene) Williams, Dr. James (Pam) Acker, Jaynie (Brian) Wells and Donna (Bill) Sterkel; numerous nieces, nephews, aunt, uncles and cousins. Also his feline companion Friskies.
His brother Billy, nephew Greg Bairn, grandparents and aunts and uncles, preceded Gary in death.

Monday, November 29, 2004 2:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
Tuesday, November 30, 2004 9:00 a.m. to noon.

Gerald E. Horst
06/08/1933 - 11/29/2004

Gerald Jerry Horst, 71, of Gering, died Monday, November 29, 2004 at his home. Services will be held 10:00am Friday, December 3, 2004 at the Gering Memorial Chapel with Pastor Doug Jones officiating. Friends may call at Gering Memorial Chapel from 9am til 8pm Thursday, December 2.
Jerry was born June 8, 1933 in Scottsbluff to Peter Horst, and Lydia Ray, and received his early education in the Roosevelt Elementary school, and graduated from Scottsbluff High School in 1953. Jerry joined the National Guard, and was honorably discharged in 1954.
He married Doris L. Rusmisel on January 14, 1955 in Scottsbluff, and they made their home in Lyman, NE, where he worked for Montgomery Wards. They then moved to Colorado, where Bob was born in 1956. In 1957, they returned to Gering and had their 2nd son, Rodney. Jerry continued to work in Scottsbluff for Montgomery Wards until 1965. He then managed the Reitz Sports Center, and in 1969, Roger was born. In 1972, Jerry began working for Lockwood Manufacturing until he retired in 1991.
Jerry loved to golf, and was a member at Monument Shadows, and also a member of the Elks for 30 years. He was also an avid football fan of the Nebraska Cornhuskers, and the Denver Broncos.
Survivors include his wife Doris; sons, Robert and wife Pat Horst of Omaha, Rodney Horst of Gering, and Roger and wife Karrie Horst of Minatare; six grandchildren; 2 great-grandchildren; 2 sisters, Jeanette Cawley of Norfolk, VA., and Charlene Powell, of Denver, CO; 2 brothers, Peter Horst Jr. of Monroe, OR. and William Horst of Arnold, NE.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
