Dorothy D Cwach
11/4/1928 - 11/7/2012

A memorial service will be held on Friday, November 9, 2012 at 10:00 a.m. at Christ the King Catholic Church in Gering.
Memorial contributions may be made in Dorothy’s name to Valley Bank and Trust Co.
Dorothy D. Cwach, 84 of Gering died on Wednesday, November 7, 2012 at her home with her family by her side. Abiding by her wishes, cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held on Friday, November 9, 2012 at 10:00 a.m. at Christ the King Catholic Church in Gering. Memorial contributions may be made in Dorothy’s name to Valley Bank and Trust Co.
Dorothy was born November 4, 1928 in Winner, South Dakota to Jack and Pearl (McKee) Wang. She was the oldest of nine children. She grew up and attended school in Wood, SD and graduated from high school there in 1947. Dorothy attended Black Hills State College in 1947 following her graduation from high school and she obtained a Teaching Permit which enabled her to teach in the rural schools of Mellette and Beadley Counties. She continued her education at Huron College and obtained her Bachelor’s Degree, and then she accepted a position in her first “town” school at Wolsey, SD. In May, 1948 Dorothy married Richard (Dick) McKean of White River, SD and to that union five children were born. Dorothy and Dick divorced during the summer of 1959 and that fall she married Elmer Cwach, whom she met at Black Hills State College while attending summer school. In 1962, Dorothy and Elmer accepted positions with the Bureau of Indian Affairs and began their careers as educators in Indian Schools. She began her teaching career in September, 1947 and continued in that profession until she was 79 years old.
Most of her teaching years were spent in Indian Reservation schools in North and South Dakota; with the last 38 years spent as an educator on the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota. Dorothy devoted much time furthering her education and was certified by the State of South Dakota to act in almost any educational capacity in that State. She served a variety of capacities on the Pine Ridge Reservation, first as a federally employed teacher and later as a principal of Porcupine Day Schools for several years.
Dorothy was a very loving mother, grandmother, and great grandmother; always stressing the importance of education, participation in our country’s political process and compassion for those less fortunate. She enjoyed the numerous family gatherings at her home and always made sure everyone knew how welcome they were.
Survivors include her husband Elmer, Gering, her children: Mark McKean, Leesburg, FL, Kerry McKean, Amarillo, TX, Richard (Kathleen) McKean, Bayard, Katherine Hatfield, Sturgis, SD, and Becky (Randy) Richter, Gering. Grandchildren: Ryan, Stephen, Jason and Jared (Katie) McKean, Caine VanDeWater, Melissa (Shad) Forgey, Ashley Hatfield, Marty (Maria) Gillen, Christi (Zac) Hays, Michael Gillen, Michelle (PJ) Hoehn. Great Grandchildren: Bradley and Anabelle Gillen, Aiden and Caitlyn Hoehn, Brianne and Lily Hays, and Vincent and Valerie Forgey; two sisters, three brothers and numerous nieces and nephews. Preceding her in death were her parents, two brothers and one sister.

Ranette G. Schwartzkopf
10/29/1952 - 11/24/2012

Ranette G. Schwartzkopf, 60 of Gering, passed away Saturday, November 24, 2012 at her home with family at her side.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, November 29, 2012 at 10:00 a.m. at Christ the King Catholic Church with Fr. Gerald Harr officiating. Ranette has requested casual dress. A Vigil Service will be held on Wednesday at 6:00 p.m. at Gering Memorial Chapel. A visitation will be Wednesday, from 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the chapel. Memorials have been established to Christ the King Catholic Church.
Ranette was born October 29, 1952 in Denver, Colorado to George and Terri (Wethington) Schneider. She grew up in Fort Lupton, Colorado and graduated from Fort Lupton High School in May 1970.
Ranette moved with her parents to Gering in 1971 and worked for Masek Distributing for several years. She went on to work for the Star Herald, Western Travel Agency, and Frontier Airlines and was Office Manager for J.A. Tuttle Real Estate Appraisers.
She married Robert L. Schwartzkopf in Scottsbluff March 24, 1984. Robert died October 5, 1995. In addition to her family, friends and zest for life, her greatest joy was her “boys” Yogi, Benji and Charlie.
Ranette is survived by her brothers Randy and Marianna Schneider of Aurora, Colorado and Brent and Ginger Schneider of Gering; three step daughters Kathy, Renee and Lorie and numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and Benji and Charlie.
Preceding Ranette in death were her husband and mother and father.
Ranette’s family would like to acknowledge and especially thank our cousin Cindy, whose loving support and caring ways fulfilled Ranette’s wish to remain in her home as she courageously struggled with cancer.
Although taken from us too soon, Ranette will be remembered for her faith, generosity and strength and will be sadly missed by family and friends.

Janice (Jan) L. Foster
2/22/1941 - 8/1/2012

A memorial service will be held in Jan’s honor will be held on Saturday, September 8, 2012 at 10:00 a.m. at Holy Apostles Episcopal Church in Mitchell with Reverend Angie Jones officiating.
Memorials may be given to Holy Apostles Episcopal Church or the Panhandle Humane Society.
Janice “Jan” L. Foster, 71, passed away, Wednesday, August 01, 2012 at her home. As per Jan’s request cremation has taken place.
A memorial service will be held in Jan’s honor will be held on Saturday, September 8, 2012 at 10:00 a.m. at Holy Apostles Episcopal Church in Mitchell with Reverend Angie Jones officiating.
Memorials may be given to Holy Apostles Episcopal Church or the Panhandle Humane Society.
Jan was born in Needham, Massachusetts to Raymond and Marjorie Foster on February 22, 1941. She attended Tufts University, where she received her B.S. in Physical Therapy, and Northeastern University where she received her Master’s in Biology.
She began teaching Physical Therapy at Northeastern University in 1969. While there in 1975, she was promoted to Assistant Professor and received Tenure. She was promoted to Associate Professor in 1980. From 1982 until 1989, she held a variety of clinical positions. From 1989 to 1992, she taught Physical Therapy at the University of Colorado in Denver and then she returned to the clinical area until her retirement.
From 2004-2005, Jan was the Panhandle Commissioner to NCSW (Nebraska Commission on the Status of Women). She was a long time member of AAUW and was Co-President. Jan enjoyed very much the Lied Scottsbluff Literary Group Meetings and bowling with her team members at Valley Bowl. She thought the trips and meetings were that The Audubon Society held was extremely interesting.
Survivors include her brother, Richard (Sandy) Foster; nephews: Richard (Kristi) Foster and Bill Foster; niece Shelly (Charles) Davies; longtime friends Virginia Hansen and Marty Talbot and beloved pets Alfie and Sassy.

Josephine Jo A Spencer
9/14/1917 - 8/28/2012

Her funeral service will be held on Friday, August 31, 2012 at 10:30 a.m. at Gering Memorial Chapel with Pastor Lauren Ekdahl officiating. Interment will follow at West Lawn cemetery.
Visitation will be Thursday from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the chapel.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Foundation or charity of your choice.
Josephine “Jo” A. Spencer, 94 of Scottsbluff, Nebraska went to be with her Lord and Savior on Tuesday, August 28, 2012.
Her funeral service will be held on Friday, August 31, 2012 at 10:30 a.m. at Gering Memorial Chapel with Pastor Lauren Ekdahl officiating. Interment will follow at West Lawn cemetery. Jo was born September 14, 1917 in Traer, Kansas to Ellsworth and Gracie (McCartney) Brannan, the first of eight children. She graduated from Oberlin High School, Oberlin, Kansas in 1935.
She met and married the Love of her life, E. Carl Spencer in Cope, Colorado and they were married July 24, 1937 in Harrisburg, NE and to this union three children were born.
Jo was a loving homemaker and wife. Her greatest love was her family, extended family and her many friends. Especially her friends from Wel-Life of Scottsbluff, where she resided the last eight years.
Survivors include her children Duane (Jan) Spencer of Greeley, CO and Clarice Grothe of Colorado Springs, CO; grandchildren Christine Wiges, Kevin Spencer, Randy Spencer, Allen Douglas, Nicolle Spencer Ter Meer, Troy Votruba, Paul Votruba, Brent Votruba, Mathew Kvasir and Rhonda Wilhelmi and 18 great grandchildren; sister Vi Darby and sisters-in-law Lillie (Spencer) Medina and Mary Spencer.
She was preceded in death by her husband Carl Spencer, son Larry Spencer, brothers Clyde, Gary, Glen and Oliver and sisters Esther and Ruth.

Mabel D. Sinner
1/4/1931 - 11/2/2012

Funeral services will be held Wednesday November 7th at 10 a.m. at Gering Memorial Chapel with Pastor Matt Fowler of Scottsbluff United Methodist Church officiating. Interment will follow at the West Lawn cemetery in Gering.
Visitation will be held Tuesday from 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the chapel.
Memorials can be made in Mabel’s honor to Gering First United Methodist Church.
Mabel D. Sinner, 81, went to be in God’s care Friday November 2nd, 2012 at Heritage Estates Nursing Home in Gering, NE.
Mabel Dorothy (Pokorny) Sinner was born January 4, 1931 in Burwell, NE to Charles and Barbara (Kuklish) Pokorny. She grew up in the Burwell area during her youth before moving to Mitchell, NE. She met and later married Marvin W. Sinner of Gering, NE on August 18, 1950. From this marriage two children were born, Robin Kay and Paula Jane. Mabel was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and homemaker. She worked at the Gering Sugar Factory during campaign in the late 60’s and early 70’s. Mabel loved to camp and fish. Marvin and Mabel would travel to the Black Hills and other fishing spots in South Dakota with family and friends.
Mabel had many hobbies one being making beautiful braiding rugs from clothing remnants. She spent a great deal of her time making all different kinds of quilts which she shared with family and friends. Mabel enjoyed gardening and was known for the cabbage she grew. She generously shared her garden bounty with others. Mabel will be remembered by many for her cabbage burgers, cinnamon rolls, and kolaches.
Mabel will be sadly missed by her daughters, Les and Robin (Sinner) Nepper of Milan, IL, Terry & Paula (Sinner) Schank of Scottsbluff, grandchildren Terry Nepper of Lincoln, NE, Tara & Taylor (Schank) Pope of Saronville, NE, and Reed & Crystal (Schank) Palser of Gering, NE. Mabel’s great grandchildren were the joy of her life, Ashlynn, Cord, Parker, and Easton will miss there great grandmother.
Mabel was preceded in death by her loving husband, Marvin William Sinner who passed December 22, 1988, her infant son Steven and 14 brothers and sisters.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday November 7th at 10 a.m. at Gering Memorial Chapel with Pastor Matt Fowler of Scottsbluff United Methodist Church officiating. Interment will follow at the West Lawn cemetery in Gering. Visitation will be held Tuesday from 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the chapel. Memorials can be made in Mabel’s honor to Gering First United Methodist Church.

Arnold Edward Wickert
05/15/1917 - Saturday, August 19, 2006

Arnold Edward Wickert, 89 of Gering, Nebraska died Saturday, August 19, 2006 at the Veterans Hospital in Cheyenne, Wyoming.
His memorial service will be held Saturday, August 26, 2006 at 11:00 a.m. at Church of Nazarene, 1305 W. 20th, Scottsbluff with Pastor Calvin Prouty officiating. Inurnment will be at Sunset Memorial Park. Military Honors will be provided by the Nebraska National Guard.
Arnold was born on May 15, 1917 in West Point, Nebraska to John Penrose and Clara Louise (Moody) Wickert. He entered the U.S. Marines on December 18, 1943 and was honorably discharged on January 7, 1946. He fought in the South Pacific with three of his brothers, Lloyd, Ervin and Howard. He met Jean Thurman in 1948 and was united in marriage on September 28, 1949. He retired from A.G. in 1982.
Arnold was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather and friend and will be sadly missed by all who knew him.
Survivors include his three children: Connie Self of Gering, NE., Dennis Wickert of Cheyenne, WY., and Randy Wickert of Loveland, CO.; five grandchildren and eight great grandchildren; brothers: Lloyd, Irvin and Howard Wickert and sisters Dorothy Fenske and Grace Wickert.
He was preceded in death by his parents, sister, Evaline Wickert and brothers, Marvin and Richard “Wimpy” Wickert.
Memorials may be given to the Cheyenne Veteran’s Hospice Program.

Carlos R. Ramos
11/03/1929 - Sunday, August 20, 2006

Carlos R. Ramos, 76, of Scottsbluff, died Sunday, August 20, 2006 at University Hospital in Denver, CO. A Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:00 a.m. Thursday, August 24, 2006 at Christ the King Catholic Church with Fr. Stephen Deaver officiating. Interment will be in the Mitchell cemetery in Mitchell.
Friends may call at Gering Memorial Chapel between 1:00p.m.-5:00 p.m. Wednesday. A rosary will be recited at 7:00p.m. at the church.
Carlos was born November 3, 1929 in Morenci, AZ to Ricardo and Delphina (Robles) Ramos. He married Bessie Rivera September 18, 1950 in Gibbon, NE. and moved to Mitchell, NE in 1951.
He is survived by special friend: Rita Martinez of Scottsbluff, his 10 children Ron (Rosemary) Ramos, Larry (Cyndi) Ramos, Carmen (Andrew) Sanchez, John (Deanna) Ramos of Scottsbluff; Blanca (David) Ybarra and Brenda Ramos of Gering; Delphine (Alfonso) Marez of Omaha, Delia (Randy) Johnson of Sparta, MO.; Petronila (Manuel) Montelongo of Las Vegas, NV.; brother Augustine Ramos, Sauceca, Zacatecas, Mexico; sisters: Eva Lopez, and Belia R. Flores both of St. Paul, MN.
His children brought him 37 grandchildren and 40 great-grandchildren. He spent many years farming and working for Great Western Sugar and retired in 1991 with the Scotts Bluff County Department of Roads. During his retirement he enjoyed spending time with his family and traveling to Mexico to visit his siblings. He was passionate about playing cards and enjoyed the solitude of fishing. His grandchildren have fond memories of his love for his Mexican heritage, passing on his passion for music and dancing, and sharing his life’s memories with them.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife Bessie, daughter Roberta Mendoza, grandsons: Daniel Ybarra and Carolo Mendoza, mother Delphina Ramos and granddaughter Heather Sanchez.
A memorial has been established to Our Lady of Peace Shrine at Pine Bluffs, WY.
