Vera E. Swanson
December 21, 1910 - June 23, 2011
Vera E. Swanson was born on December 21st, 1910, at home in Wahoo, NE, to Augusta (Stenholm) and Julius H. Flodman. Vera passed away on June 23rd, 2011, at the Saunders County Medical Center after 100 and 1/2 years of living.
Vera was baptized and confirmed at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Wahoo. Her schooling began at Model School at Luther Academy for Kindergarten and First Grade, Second and Third grades in Colton, Oregon, and the rest of the elementary grades at West Ward, Wahoo. She graduated from Luther Academy in 1928. After two years of teaching, in a rural school in Gosper County, Nebraska, she returned to Luther Jr. College and graduated in 1932. She attended the University of Nebraska for one year. She was the organist at Bethlehem from 1931 until 1938.
On June 25th, 1936, she married
Dr. J. R. Swanson at Bethlehem Lutheran Church. They were married
for 51 years, until his death on June 18th, 1987. Three children were born to this marriage.
She was always active at Bethlehem Lutheran Church. She sang in the choir for many years, also in the Ladies Choir. Vera was Cradle Roll Superintendent for 15 years, and President of the Women’s Missionary Group three times. Vera was also active in the Luther College and Kennedy College Auxiliaries.
Vera spent many years leading Girl Scout Troops, working at the Red Cross Bloodmobile, and serving as a clerk on Election Day. She was an active Women’s Club member for over 50 years, Wahoo Mothers’ Club and the Wahoo Garden Club. One of the greatest blessings in Vera’s life was the Monday Morning Bible Study. For the past nine years she has resided at Saunders House in Wahoo.
Vera was preceded in death by her parents, brothers, Milton and Lester, her husband, Dr. J. R. Swanson and grandson, James Rapp. Vera is survived by her children and spouses: Jewel (William) Rapp; Ray (Cindy) Swanson; and Miriam (Karl) Mendenhall. Her grandchildren include Kristin (Pete) Cardozo; Dr. Benjamin (Dr. Jill Faraci) Swanson; Andrew Swanson; Patrick (Amy) Swanson; Greg Mendenhall; and Scott (Meredith Stewart) Mendenhall. Vera’s great-grandchildren include Paul and Rachael Cardozo, and Evangeline Swanson.
Casket Bearers will be Benjamin Swanson, Andrew Swanson, Patrick Swanson, Gregory Mendenhall, Scott Mendenhall, and Paul James Cardozo.
George Wimmer
The funeral with military honors for George H. Wimmer, 84, of West Point will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Paul Lutheran Church in West Point.
He died Monday, March 29, 2004, at his home.
Wimmer was born April 15, 1919, in Hales Corner, Wis. In 1934, the family moved to Snyder where he graduated from Snyder High School in 1938. He worked in the family butcher shop and then returned to Milwaukee, where he worked and met his wife, Ilse Doenges. They were married
Aug. 9, 1941, in West Allis, Wis. They returned to Snyder where he worked for the family business, George Wimmer & Sons, and they started a family. He served in the U.S. Army and was stationed in Virginia and India during World War II. In 1957, he and his family moved to West Point to the companys expanded sausage factory. He learned his sausage-making and spice-blending skills from his father. His wife preceded him in death in October 2001.
In West Point, he was active in many organizations, including the school board and city council. He was involved in many boards and organizations at his church, St. Paul Lutheran, both locally and the district level. For many years he was a director of the Lutheran Family Service board, as well as St. Josephs Retirement Community. He was a member of the American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Survivors include: two sons, George W. (and wife, Ann) of West Point and William M. (and wife, Anna) of Lincoln; a brother, Harold (and wife, Delores) of West Point; and four grandsons.
He also was preceded in death by a son, a daughter, a sister and a brother.
The Rev. Robert Hedtke will officiate Saturdays service. Visitation will be from 1-8:30 p.m. Thursday and from 9 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. Friday, all at Stalp Funeral Home in West Point. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Mount Hope cemetery.
Memorials have been established to Lutheran Family Service, St. Paul Lutheran Church and Mount Hope cemetery.
Gerald J. Simon, Sr.
March 28, 1934 - June 25, 2011
Gerald “Jerry” John Simon, Sr., age 77 of Ithaca, entered into GLORY Saturday, June 25, 2011 at Saunders Medical Center in Wahoo.
He was born March 28, 1934 in Omaha to Albert and Lillian (Dryer) Simon. Jerry married
Phyllis Anne Hert on January 14, 1954. Their union was blessed with seven children. Jerry pitched fast pitch softball for more than thirty years. He was devoted to his family and loved the Lord.
Jerry was preceded in death by his parents Albert and Lillian Simon, brother Albert “Duke” Simon, and granddaughter Rachel Simon.
He is survived by his wife Phyllis of Ithaca; children Bunnie (Jeff) McGee, Cedar Bluffs, Terri (Dory) Hall, Wahoo, Shelly Trudell, Fremont, Jerry (Lori) Simon, Wahoo, Dan (Mollie) Simon, Ithaca, Candie (Tom) Wageman, Ithaca, Tom (Beth) Simon, Yutan; 15 grandsons; 11 granddaughters; 13 great-grandsons; 12 great-granddaughters.
Interment: Indian Mound cemetery
Dolores Kruse
Dolores A. Kruse, 82, of Lincoln died Tuesday, June 8, 2004, in Lincoln.
Dolores Reiter was born Sept. 15, 1921, in Sioux Falls, S.D.
She was a member of St. Marys Parish in Denton.
Survivors include: her husband, Darold Kruse; two daughters, Konnie (Mrs. Jim) Stranik of Lincoln and Kathie (Mrs. David) Ninneman of Denton; a brother, Vernon (and wife, Caryl) Reiter of Waterloo, Iowa; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a sister.
The funeral will be 1:30 p.m. Friday at Blessed Sacrament Parish, 1720 Lake St., in Lincoln with the Rev. Jim Dawson officiating. Visitation will be from 5-9 p.m. today at Lincoln Memorial Funeral Home, 6800 S. 14th St., in Lincoln and continues one hour prior to service time at the church. Burial will be in Lincoln Memorial Park.

Ruth V. Hull, 97, of Fremont died Wednesday, June 9, 2004, at A.J. Merrick Manor in Fremont.

Lee Bartek, 54, of Wahoo died today, June 10, 2004, in Omaha.

Eldred G. Torrison
October 29, 1934 - July 14, 2011
Eldy was born in Omaha, graduating from Omaha North High School and Omaha University. He married
Nancy Reed in 1956. They lived in Omaha, Grand Island, Worms and Wahoo. He enjoyed a sales and management career in the paint business, working for Cook Paint, Sherwin Williams and Wozniak, Inc.
Eldy enjoyed sports, working as a gentleman sheep farmer, and loved fishing in Canada. He had an optimistic nature, never losing his optimism even in the face of adversity. Eldy never hesitated to stand up for what he thought was right and had the courage to do the right thing, even if he stood alone - a trait passed on to the next generation. His ever-present sense of humor was with him to his last day, when he proclaimed his doctor a “musical genius” because he liked Bob Seger. Eldy was a loyal friend, much loved and greatly respected by his family, and will be missed.
He is survived by his loving wife Nancy; sons Phil (Laura) of Omaha and Eric (Marilyn) of Carnation, WA; grandchildren Matt (Jamie) Torrison of Omaha, Jacob Torrison of Omaha, James Sheehan of Phoenix, AZ and Tara (Jack) Walker of Otoe, NE; and great grandchildren Shelby, Bailey, Hunter and Logan.

Eugene A. Harris, Sr.
August 20, 1928 - July 4, 2011
Eugene A Harris, age 82 of Ranch Viejo, TX, formerly of Wahoo, passed away July 4, 2011 in Texas. He was manager of the Co-op in Wahoo for twenty years and was an active member of Hilltop Country Club. He moved to Ranch Viejo in 1990.
He is survived by his wife Marjorie, sons Eugene (Kerri) Harris, and Pat Harris; 3 grandchildren; and 4 great grandchildren.

Frances A. Pokorny
January 4, 1929 - July 18, 2011
Frances A. Pokorny, age 82 of Wahoo, died Monday, July 18, 2011 in Wahoo.
She was born January 4, 1929 in rural Prague, Nebraska to Rudolph and Frances (Chmelka) Novak. Frances married
Stanley Pokorny in Wahoo on August 10, 1947. Frances’ entire life revolved around her family. As a homemaker, she was active in her children’s lives and even sewed clothing for them when they were young. Frances enjoyed baking and cooking. She regularly attended ballgames and other activities in which her grandchildren were involved. Frances was active in the Ladies Aid at Bethesda Covenant Church in Malmo, and later became a faithful member of Swedeburg Covenant Church.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Rudolph and Frances Novak, husband Stanley Pokorny, son John Rudolph Pokorny, daughters Betty Jane Pokorny and Joyce Eileen Pokorny, brothers Rudy Novak and Frank Novak, and sisters Maryann Novak and Emily Jansa.
Frances is survived by her son and daughter-in-law Robert and Kristina Pokorny of Weston; daughters and sons-in-law Maryann and John Berggren of Weston, and Margery and Thomas Holtorf of Morse Bluff; brother and sister-in-law William and Donna Novak of Mead; sister-in-law Bonny Novak of Bennet; brother-in-law Leonard Jansa of Garner, IA; 14 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Casket bearers will be Joel Berggren, Jeremy Berggren, Brett Holtorf, Brandon Holtorf, Jacob Pokorny, Caleb Pokorny and Benjamin Pokorny. Honorary casket bearers will be Frances’ grandchildren and great-grandchildren, along with Roger and Barb Fisher and MaryAnn Novak.
