Anita Stickelman
October 28, 1933 - March 15, 2012
Anita "Iliene" Imler Stickleman, 78, of Gothenburg, Nebraska, died March 15, 2012 in Gothenburg, NE.
Anita was Mother, Daughter, Sister, Grandmother and Great Grandmother. Her focus was always on family. Iliene’s career was varied. She worked as a nurse. She also worked at Monroe Auto, and owned her own restaurant at one point in Gothenburg. She always worked very hard and was frugal with what she had.
Anita was born in Curtis, Nebraska, on October 28, 1933. Her parents were Lorand and Lucille Welch who lived on a farm north of Moorefield, Nebraska. She was the first of six children, four brothers and one sister. Iliene attended school in Moorefield and later attended Curtis High School.
Iliene married Edwin Imler on January, 28, 1950. They resided in Brady, Nebraska most of their married life. They had five children; Ira Imler, Alice Goiter (Mitch), Walter Imler (Lorene), Rhonda Imler and Mary Bodfield (Larry). She has eighteen grandchildren and thirty-two great grandchildren.
As she grew older she spent many hours with her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She played games with them, showed them how things in life worked. Her grandchildren enjoyed the time she spent with them. The grandchildren said they enjoyed spending time with “Grannie” more than with anyone. They said all their friends would love to come spend time with her and many times came over just for that.
Iliene was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Edwin lmler, her youngest daughter, Mary Bodfield and two infant children.

Dickie L. Hazen
Dickie Lee Hazen, 78, of Wellfleet, Nebraska, died March 15, 2012 at his home in Wellfleet, NE.
He was born September 9, 1933 in Wellfleet, NE, son of Clair Leslie and Helen (Amstuz) Hazen.
Dickie grew up in Wellfleet and attended Lincoln County Schools. He graduated from the Nebraska School of Agriculture, Curtis; in May 1952.
He served his country in the US Navy from 1950-1954.
Dickie married Janis Alexander in August of 1957. To this union five children born Chuck, Lonnie, Ronda, Sheila and Audie.
He worked at Missouri Valley Construction. He worked for Union Pacific Railroad as a car man and engineer. He also farmed in the Wellfleet area. Dickie was a member of the VFW Maywood, NE. Eagles North Platte 2839, Legion North Platte, NE. His favorite activities and interests included fishing, hunting, farming, ag production, spending time with his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.
Surviving are sons, Chuck (Sue) Hazen of Omaha, NE; son, Lonnie (Teresa) Hazen of Wellfleet, son, Audie (Danielle) Hazen of North Platte, daughters, Ronda (Douglas) Edwards of North Platte, daughter, Sheila (Ron) Hulme of Grand Island, 15 grandchildren, 20 great grandchildren, 1 great great grandchild.
Dickie was preceded in death by father, Clair Leslie Hazen, mother, Helen Hazen, brother, Fritzie Hazen, infant sister, Judith Hazen.

Alexia Johnston
October 15, 1921 - March 17, 2012
ALEXIA 'LEXI' JOHNSTON
Alexia 'Lexi' Marie Tanberg was born October 15, 1921 in Rice Lake, Wisconsin to Leonard and Lucille Steinmetz Tandberg. She graduated from Rice Lake High School and sought work in Fort Lewis, Washington where she married James Curtis Johnston on October 10, 1941. Alexia returned to Jim's hometown of Curtis NE to await his return from the war. Seven children were born to Jim and Alexia: Juanita 'Nita' 1942, Mary Jean 1947, James Curtis Jr. 1948, Jerome 1950, Janet 1952, Julie 1955, and Jon 1962.
Alexia served as Cub and Girl Scout leader, and Curtis Youth Development volunteer raising funds for the tennis court. She enjoyed music and young people. Lexi was known for playing records at the 1960's summer Sock Hops. She continued collecting records and playing for dances for over 25 years. Known as the DJ 'LEXI' she played both public and private functions around the area, assisted by her son Jon. She played her last dance at Jon's wedding in October 1989. Well into the 21st century she continued to amaze her grandkids and great-grand children with her love and knowledge of current music artists and dance. In 1968, she was chosen 'Mother of the Year' by the Curtis Hi-Line Enterprise.
Lexi was a member of St James Catholic Church for over 70 years and an Altar Society officer for 25 years.
Jim ran the S & H Market grocery store and opened Jim's Drive-In in 1963 where Alexia helped, along with their teen-age children. After Jim's death in 1974 Lexi sold the grocery store and became a businesswoman in her own right, owning Johnston Rentals and Trailer Court and selling Electrolux vacuum cleaners. In 1978, she and her son Jon remodeled the Curtis Pool Hall to become Curtis Recreation which was thoroughly enjoyed by teenagers. In 1984, she opened Lexi's Consignment shop in downtown Curtis. Lexi also cooked at Sunset Haven nursing home and Medicine Valley High School for a number of years.
A fan of lifelong learning, and an avid reader, Lexi received her first computer in 1997 to keep in touch with her children who lived in four states and overseas. Lexi never stopped learning about the world around her and challenged her family to do the same. She remained very active until a car accident shortly before her 80th birthday left her with chronic pain problems. In 2007, she moved to an assisted living facility in North Platte.
Survivors include four daughters and sons-in-law: Nita Johnston and Al Hullett, Vancouver, WA; Mary and Lee Volkmer, Lincoln, NE, Janet and Steve Fear, North Platte, NE and Julie and Philip Moran, Flower Mound, Texas; three sons and daughters-in law; Jim Johnston and his best friend, Bev Lenz, Dallas, TX, Jerome and Sheila Johnston, Austin, TX, and Jon and Heidi Johnston, Chaska, MN, 18 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great-grand children.
Lexi is survived by sisters, Pearalee (Mahlon) Bilodeau, Shingle Springs, CA and Betty Rutan, Tucson, AZ; sister-in-law Delores Johnston, Rupert, ID; and her many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, brother Darold, sister Bethel and her husband Jim.
In lieu of flowers, Alexia requested memorials be given to St James Catholic Church in Curtis NE, Curtis Ambulance Fund, Curtis Community Center, or Curtis Public Library.

Ronald Eugene Meester
June 16, 1947 - March 18, 2012
Ronald Eugene Meester, 64, of North Platte, Nebraska, died March 18, 2012 at his home in North Platte following a battle with COPD and Emphysema.
He was born June 16, 1947 in Gothenburg, NE; son of Walter J. and Hannah (Johanning) Meester. He grew up in Gothenburg and attended Gothenburg Public Schools.
Ron had many different jobs throughout his life, but he always said that the best time of his life was when he was the site supervisor at Windy Peak outdoor lab in Bailey, CO. He was able to work with the school kids from the Jefferson County School system teaching them outdoor activities.Ron loved to be outdoors. He enjoyed fishing and driving his truck. He was woodworker and metal worker. He enjoyed spending time with his cat Amber and his dog Toad.Ron has lived at the Pawnee Hotel since 2006. That is where he meet Karin whom he love to spend time with and took care of him until his death. He made some great friends while living at the Pawnee.
Ron is survived by special friend and caregiver Karin Cain of North Platte, NE; brother Bob (Priscilla) Meester of Lexington, NE; sisters Shirley G.(Ed) Claflin of Gothenburg, NE; Bonnie (Clifford) Wedemeyer of Cheyenne, WY; former spouses Linda McCollum, Carol Volesky, sister-in-law, Linda Meester of Cozad, NE; nieces Michelle (Mike) Courtney of Lincoln, NE; Melissa (Terry) Walker of Gothenburg, NE; Heide Deharty of Grand Island, NE; Becky Brooks of North Platte, NE; Angie (Bill) Shafer of Centennial, CO; Brenda (Brett) Manus of Albuquerque, NM; Johannah (Eric) Ducy of Wheatland, WY; Kim (Todd) Rosenthal of Lincoln, NE; Amanda G'Schwind of Lexington, NE; nephews Wyatt (Sandy) Meester of Cozad, NE; William (Erica) Wedemeyer of Cheyenne, WY; great and great grand nieces and nephews; cousins and his Pawnee Retirement Hotel family.
Ronald was preceded in death by father Walter J. Meester, mother Hannah Meester, brothers Larry in 2006 and infant brother Terry Lavern, infant sister Betty Lou, grandparents- Folkert and Ellen Johanning and Wyatt and Grace Meester.

Bobbi Jo Loostrom
March 18, 2012 - March 18, 2012
Bobbi Johanna Loostrom, infant daughter of John and Melodie (DenOuden) Loostrom was born and died on March 18, 2012 at Methodist Women's Hospital in Omaha, NE.
Bobbi Jo leaves her family who love her - including her parents John and Melodie; a sister Katie; her grandparents Mark and Shawn Loostrom, Donald and Cheryl DenOuden; aunts, uncles and cousins.
Bobbi Jo joins three older siblings in heaven.

Boyd Sanders
Boyd L. Sanders, 79, of Fremont died Thursday, June 17, 2004, in Omaha.
Boyd Sanders was born May 28, 1925, in Sac County, Iowa. He was a World War II veteran. He served as an expert marksman in the U.S. Marine Corps.
He worked at Marshall Nurseries in Fremont from 1948-1990s. He was an outdoor enthusiast, who enjoyed hunting and fishing.
Survivors include: a son, Bud (and wife, Claudette) Sanders of Beaumont Calif.; a daughter, Deidre Buck of Palm Springs, Calif.; granddaughter, Zoe Sanders; and good friend, Dan Roberts of Fremont.
The memorial service will be 6:30 p.m. Sunday at Stanton Towers in Fremont. The graveside service will be 2 p.m. Monday at Delaware cemetery in Nemaha, Iowa. Brauman Mortuary of Omaha is in charge of the arrangements.
A memorial has been established to the Nebraska Games & Parks Commission.

Arthur Joe Polak
February 11, 1918 - March 21, 2012
Arthur "Art" Joe Polak, 94, of Gothenburg, NE died March 21, 2012 at Linden Court in North Platte, NE.
Arthur Joe Polak was born February 11, 1918 to Frank and Mary (Skucius) Polak at Munden, KS, where he attended school and farmed until he was inducted into the United States Army in February 1941. He married Lucille Moravek on May 10, 1941, while training in Little Rock, AR. He also was stationed at San Luis Obispo, Burbank, Riverside and Pasadena, CA, Camp Hood, TX, and Camp Polk, LA. He served with the 127th FA Battalion, which later was converted, to the 635th Tank Destroyer Battalion. After further training in England, his unit landed on Omaha Beach on D-Day and saw action in every major campaign of the European Theater during World War II. After being honorably discharged, he attended school at Milford, NE, and then owned and operated a refrigeration and electrical contracting business in Superior, NE, where his children were born. In 1957, the family moved to Gothenburg, NE where Art and Lucille owned and operated retail businesses until their retirement in 1981.
Art was involved in civic affairs, serving on the Gothenburg Zoning and Planning Commission for 10 years, active in the Chamber of Commerce, a charter member of the Gothenburg Improvement Corporation, and a member of the American Legion Post #64.
During retirement, Art’s love for travel took him and Lucille on trips all over North America and throughout Europe. They were winter residents in Yuma, AZ for 14 years, participating in many activities and attending various classes at Arizona Western College. They returned to Gothenburg in 1995, where they lived until 2010 when they moved to Linden Court in North Platte, NE.
Arthur is survived by his wife, Lucille, a daughter, Debi (Burnell) Steinmeyer of North Platte, NE, a son, Harold of Alma, NE, grandchildren DJ and Bre Steinmeyer and Abbi Polak, and a great grandson, Cyrus Jordan. He was preceded in death by his parents, his twin brother Archie, brothers Rudolph and Ernest, and sister Elsie.
Cremation was chosen at Art's Request.

Donald Anthony
Donald L. Anthony, 65, of Tekamah died Thursday, Aug. 5, 2004.
Anthony was born March 8, 1939, and was raised in Fremont. He was a truck driver for 44 years. He married his wife, Kathy, in 1973.
Survivors include: his wife; four children, Karla Nadrchal, Brenda Anthony, Trish Heidenreich-Blakely and Todd Anthony; two stepchildren, Sally Aufenkamp and Mike Barrett; three brothers, Lonnie, Myron and Rocky Anthony; four stepbrothers, Dan, Scott, Tyler and Matt Dixon; stepsister, Beth Mincer; stepmother, Doris Anthony; and 13 grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a stepbrother.
The service will be 1 p.m. Saturday at Westlawn-Hillcrest Funeral Home, 5710 Center St., in Omaha.

Michael P. Sayer
Michael Patrick Sayer, 63, of Gothenburg, Nebraska, died May 13, 2012 at Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney, NE; following a courageous battle with cancer.
Mike was born March 17, 1949 at McCook, NE to David and Betty Sayer of Cambridge, NE. He grew up on the family farm and graduated with the class of 1968. He enlisted in the Air Force on February 14, 1969 and was stationed at Wichita, KS until receiving orders to go overseas to Guam. Mike was honorably discharged on March 28, 1972.
On December 20, 1969 he married Teresa Vandervort at McCook, NE and to this union two sons Ronald Michael and Randy Lee were born. Mike farmed with his dad on the family farm after being discharged from the service until moving to Gothenburg in 1985. In 2001, He started working for Central Nebraska Public Power and Irrigation. He enjoyed most spending time with family and friends. He rode in the Pony Express Re Riders and served with the American Legion.
He will be remembered for always having a smile and his joking nature. He was always the first to volunteer to help and was never afraid of hard work.
Mike was preceded in death by his mom Betty; father David; brother David, Jr.; nephew Doug Hinton; parents-in-law Bud and Harriet Vandervort.
Survivors include his loving wife Terri of Gothenburg; son Ron of Hastings; son Randy of Omaha; sister Luella Hinton of Cambridge; brother Wayne Sayer of Hansen, ID; nieces Becky Hinton, Sherri D’Angelo, and Dawn Sayer; nephews Austin Sayer and Eric Sayer; along with many friends.

Robert "Bob" J. Brown
Robert "Bob" Joseph Brown, 70, resident of North Platte and formerly of Curtis, died May 7, 2012 surrounded by family at Great Plains Regional Medical Center in North Platte. Bob was born on a farm near Stockville, Frontier County, NE to Kenneth and Leona Mann Brown. Second of three children, Bob graduated from NCTA in Curtis after attending school K-10 in Stockville. Bob met his future wife, Jennifer Burkey on a blind date to the Frontier County Fair; the two were married on June 2, 1963. They made their home and raised their family in Curtis. In 1997, they relocated to North Platte, where Bob was employed by UPRR in the diesel shop, retiring in 2008.
While in Curtis, Bob began working for Stan Phillips at the Chevrolet dealership and eventually formed Brown Brothers Auto Service, working for many years with his close brother, Harold. Bob enjoyed golfing, cars, racing, NASCAR and the Big Red. He loved bowling at Frontier Lanes and was a dedicated MV Raiders fan, where he was often present at many practices and all games. Bob was a proud member of the Curtis VFD for more than 30 years during which he served as Fire Chief for 25 years including NE Fire Chief’s Association President from 95-96. Following retirement from UPRR, Bob enjoyed working part time for Roth Motors, traveling with Jennie, and having coffee with his Arby’s buddies. Bob’s legacy will always be his kindness and friendly nature to all he met, but most of all the love and loyalty he possessed for his family and grandchildren.
Bob is survived by his wife of 49 years, Jennifer; sons & spouses Rodney & Carrie, North Platte; Curtiss & Amy, Round Rock, TX.; son Regan, North Platte; daughter Mindy Jo, Cozad; 5 grandchildren, Hayley, Elizabeth, Leona, Caleb and Jameson; as well as many family and friends. He was preceded in death by parents, Kenneth & Leona Brown; brother, Harold Brown; and sister, Judy Moore.
