Verneta B. Werkmeister
August 24, 1924 - April 14, 2012
Verneta Belle Werkmeister, 87, of Curtis, Nebraska, died April 14, 2012 at Golden Living Center in Cozad.
Verneta Werkmeister was born on August 24, 1924 to Fred & Mollie Kugler six miles South West of Wellfleet. She attended Ash Grove country school through the eighth grade. She graduated from NSA High School.
She married Arthur Werkmeister on June 22, 1942 to this union three children were born , Judy Nutt, Jackie Nelson, and Jolene Farrar. Verneta worked for several years at the Curtis Pharmacy, University of Nebraska School of Agriculture as a cook, and was an Avon representative, but her joy came in being a farm wife and mother. Verneta always enjoyed dancing and quilting. Her biggest joys were spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
She is survived by her daughters: Judy (Bill) Nutt and Jackie (Stan) Nelson all of Curtis;, and Jolene (Roger) Farrar of Kearney; Grandchildren: Rhonda (Jim) Jochim, Peggy (Kevin) Fritsche, Rick (Debbie) Nelson and Shawna Culotta; seven great grandchildren: Dustin (Jackie) Haller, Eric Haller, Courtney Fritsche, Devon Fritsche, Tyler Nelson, Jordan Nelson, and Carter Culotta; and a host of family and friends.
Preceded in death by her husband Arthur, her parents, her brothers Darrell and Wayne Kugler, her sisters: Dessie Freytag, Ruby Freytag, Helen Latimer, Mildred Werkmeister, Bonnie Briggs, and infant sister Orpha Kugler.

Earl R. Hopkins
October 2, 1918 - April 14, 2012
Earl R. Hopkins, 93, of Farnam, Nebraska, died April 14, 2012 on the farm South of Farnam.
He was born October 2, 1918 in Farnam, NE, to William Edwin and Maude Gertrude (Horn) Hopkins.
Earl grew up in Farnam and graduated from Farnam High School. Following high school he enrolled in the US Army on Aug. 2, 1940. He was Honorably discharged on March 9, 1946 as a Captain of the Army's 6th Recon Troop in WWII.
Following his service to his country he moved back to Farnam were he farmed and ranched until his passing.
He was a life member of VFW Post 15028. Earl loved farming and his cattle. He enjoyed doing the Omaha World Herald crossword puzzles till the end.
Earl leaves to mourn: sister-in-law Betty Hopkins of Omaha and 16 nieces and nephews.
Earl was preceded in death by his parents William and Maude, brothers: Loyd, Leland, Richard, Oren, Clifford, Harold, Bernard and one infant brother; sisters Myrtle Belle and Irene Hercy.
Visitation: Tuesday April 17, 2012, 9am - 6pm at Blase-Strauser Memorial Chapel.

Dickie C. Newbrey
September 8, 1939 - February 16, 2009
Dickie “Bub” C. Newbrey, 69 of Eustis died on February 16, 2008 at his home after a courageous battle with cancer.
Bub was born on September 8, 1939 to Grover and Lucille V. (Allen) Newbrey at Cozad, NE. He grew up in Cozad attending Cozad Public Schools.
Bub worked various jobs as a ranch hand but most of his working days he spent working at Hay Mills and driving truck.
On August 9, 1958 Bub married Arleen DeLosh at Cozad, NE. To this union four sons were born: Alan, Jerry, Brian, and Jesse. Bub and his family moved to Oklahoma City to be closer to his brother Ted. After about four years they moved back to Cozad.
Bub enjoyed music, playing in country music bands for about 12 years; six of those years he was able to play with his brother. He played the rhythm and bass guitar, drums and sang. He loved to visit his brother in Arkansas and go trout fishing. He always enjoyed spending time with his boys. They enjoyed hunting birds and deer. Bub always enjoyed camping and fishing as a family.
Bub is survived by his loving wife of 50 years Arleen of Eustis; three sons Jerry (Clara) Newbrey of Wheatland, WY; Brian Newbrey of Eustis; Jesse L. Newbrey and special friend Connie Jenner of Gothenburg; brother Steven Newbrey of Melburn, AR; two sisters: Anna (Archie) Chaves of Cozad; Lyla (Robert) Sabin of Del City, OK; two sisters-in-law June (Jim) Sabin of Gothenburg; Lois (Dennis) Beran of Grand Island; one brother-in-law Richard (Kay) DeLosh of Grand Island; eight grandchildren: John, Dan, Shiloah, Chris, Sarah, Shawn, Casey and Adam and eight great-grandchildren.
He is preceded in death by his parents, his son Alan, Brother Ted, great-granddaughter Marisa, brother-in-law John DeLosh and his mother and father-in-law.

Adolph Rezek
The funeral for Adolph M. Rezek, 83, of Weston will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. John Nepomucene Catholic Church in Weston.
He died Friday, Feb. 13, 2004, in Wahoo.
Rezek was a World War II Veteran of the U.S. Army. He was an employee of Chicago Lumber from 1946 to 1972 in Weston. He was the owner and manager of Weston Lumber and Building Center from 1972 to 1984.
Survivors include: his wife, Marjorie; two sons, Gary Rezek and Duane Rezek, both of Weston; a daughter, Bonnie Vech of Wahoo; two sisters, Ann Osmera of Dodge and Rose Novotny of Wahoo; two brothers, Louis (and wife, Antoinette) Rezek and Ray Rezek, all of Lincoln; a sister-in-law, Marlene Rezek of Lincoln; six grandchildren, twin great-granddaughters, nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be from 2-6 p.m. Sunday at Svoboda Funeral Home in Wahoo and will continue one hour before mass at the church. Burial with Military Rites will be in St. John cemetery in Weston. A scripture service and Divine Mercy Chaplet will be at 4 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
Memorials are in care of the family.
Svoboda Funeral Home in Wahoo is in charge of arrangements.

Wanda Baker
February 4, 1928 - February 27, 2009
Wanda Elizabeth Baker of McCook formerly of Curtis died on Feb. 27, 2009 at Community Hospital in McCook.
Wanda was born on February 4, 1928 at Farman, NE to Clarence and Margarette Faye (Martin) Dixon. She married Arther Baker in 1943, to this union five children where born: Judith, Fonda, James, Arta, and Bonny.
Wanda received a Book Keeping and Accounting Degree from the University of Colorado in1957. She received a high school diploma from a Chicago correspondence school in 1961.
In 1985 Wanda went back to school and received her LPN in nursing in 1986. She enjoyed her work as and LPN. She worked as an in home nurse and also at a nursing home.
Wanda was a member of the ladies association, the Ft. Morgan VFW since 1963 and the Vineyard Christian Fellowship in Curtis.
Wanda is survived by two daughters Judith Walker of Ft. Morgan, CO; Fonda Goore of Arizona; one son James Baker of Curtis; 14 grandchildren, 31 great-grandchildren and 6 great great-grandchildren; 3 sisters: Margaret Rameo, Dorothy Dixon, Lois Heath; 2 brothers Kenneth Dixon and Donivan Dixon.
She is preceded in death by her parents, and two daughters Arta Baker and Bonny Baker; 1 brother Martin Dixon and a 1 sister Ruthie Rineheart.
Blase-Wetzel-Strauser Memorial Chapel of Curtis is in charge of all arrangements.

Donna Houfek
Donna L. Houfek, 68, of Wahoo died Saturday, Feb. 14, 2004, at Haven House in Wahoo.
Donna Anderson was born Aug. 23, 1935, in Wahoo. She attended District 55 School in rural Saunders County and graduated from Wahoo High School in 1952. She married Ralph E. Houfek on May 19, 1955, in Wahoo. She was a bookkeeper for 46 years at Saunders County Health Services in Wahoo. She had resided at Haven House in Wahoo since January 2003.
She was a life-long member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Wahoo.
Survivors include: her husband; three sons, Leigh Houfek of Denver, Keith Houfek of Lincoln and Kenneth Houfek of Wahoo; a brother, Don (and wife, Ruth) Anderson of Fremont; and a grandson.
The funeral will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Wahoo with the Rev. Kent Morse officiating. Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. today at Svoboda Funeral Home in Wahoo with the family present from 5-7 p.m. Burial will be in Sunrise cemetery in Wahoo.

Bill Dishman
June 22, 1936 - February 21, 2009
Billy Buster Dishman, 72, of Gothenburg, NE, passed away at his home on Saturday, February 21, 2009.
Bill was born on June 22, 1936, in Mason City, NE, to Homer and Althea (Wright) Dishman. Bill grew up and attended school in Gothenburg. In 1958, Bill married Elma Jean Johnston in Broken Bow, NE.
Bill lived in Napa, Idaho from 1969 to 1971 then moved back to Gothenburg.
Bill worked as an Appliance Repair Technician, drove truck and installed fence along the interstate. He was a member of the First Church of Christ. Bill enjoyed his family, camping fishing, Shuffle board, and playing pool and cards.
Billy is preceded in death by his parents, a son, Billy Jo Dishman, , a daughter-in-law, Roxanne Dishman, a brother, Albert, three sisters, Irene, Marie and Elsie, two grandchildren, Mitchell and Savanna, and one great-grandchild, Austin.
Survivers include his loving wife Jean of 51 years, two sons: Randy and Linda Dean of Alliance, NE, Danny Johnston of Boise, ID, daughters: Rosemary Carlson and Herb Russell of North Platte, Jenny and Tony Beer of Elm Creek, Vivian and Lee Kolb of Gothenburg, Connie and Alex Romero of Cozad, Jessie and Steve Seifer of Sutherland, Carolee and Aaron Martin of Sutherland and Aprilee and Lonnie Deaver of Azle, TX, brothers: Harold Dishman of Laramie, WY, Virgil and Lile Dishman of Council Bluffs, IA, Al and Lynda Dishman of Gothenburg, David and Barb Dishman of Gothenburg, sisters: Violet and Charles Mladek of Cozad, Bertha Poen of Gothenburg, Lucy and Dick Sabin of Lexington, sister-in-law: Margret Dishman of North Platte, 28 grandchildren and 31 great-grandchildren.

DOROTHY ELLEN GERDES
December 16, 1919 - March 2, 2009
Dorothy E. Gerdes 89, of Gothenburg died on March 2, 2009 at Gothenburg Memorial Hospital.
Dorothy was born on December 16, 1919 to John and Mary (Fishburn) Trimble at Gothenburg, NE. Dorothy was baptized on the April 9, 1939 at the First Presbyterian Church in Gothenburg, NE. She grew up at Gothenburg and graduated from Gothenburg High School in 1940.
Dorothy married Walter LaVerne Gerdes on November 23, 1940 at Lexington. To this union 2 children were born: LaVerne and Mary Lou.
Dorothy lived at Gothenburg and Maxwell and spent 2 years in California. She cleaned homes and offices including the Gothenburg State Bank.
Dorothy became a member of the American Lutheran Church on June 11, 1944. She was also a member of the VFW Auxiliary. She enjoyed horseshoes, cards, and bingo. She loved people and spending time with her children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great great grandchildren.
Survivors include her son LaVerne (Lorraine) Gerdes of Lincoln, NE; daughter Mary Lou (Garry) Dishman of Gothenburg; sister LaVonne Gerdes of Gothenburg; seven grandchildren; Ronald (Carmella) Dishman, Deanna (Steve) Lange, Karen (Todd) Wuehler, Nancy (Curt) DeVore, Kim (Kevin) Watson, Jeff (Valerie) Gerdes, and LaRae (David) Lavalleur, 19 great grandchildren, and eight great great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband Walter in 1985, her parents, and several brothers and sisters.

Karen Ludwig
January 28, 1939 - February 18, 2009
Karen (Aden) Mannon Ludwig, 70, of Gothenburg, passed away on February 18, 2009 at Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney.
Karen was born on January 28, 1939 to Arthur & Hannah Aden at Gothenburg. She attended schools at Gothenburg and graduated from Gothenburg High School.
Karen was baptized at Christ Lutheran Church and was a member of the American Lutheran Church, she was also a member of the American Legion Auxiliary and was a past member of the Eastern Star.
Karen married Carroll F. Mannon on October 14, 1956 to this union, three children were born: Deb, Troy, and Todd.
Karen was most recently living in Gothenburg; she also had lived in North Platte and Lincoln. She enjoyed spending time at the lake, gardening, sewing, and quilting. She also enjoyed spending time with her family and friends and her grandchildren.
Karen was preceded in death by her husband Carroll Mannon; her parents Art & Hannah, sister-in-law Maxine Shively, brother-in-law Kenneth Bauman.
Survivors include: her daughter Deb Gokie; two sons Troy (Yvette) Mannon and Todd (fiancée Pam Hongsermeier) Mannon; her special friend and companion Kelly Dorscher; three brothers Keith (Carol) Aden, Roger (Shirley) Aden, Rodney (Arlene) Aden; four grandchildren Kristin (Brad) Seier; Justin Gokie; Mercedes Mannon and Matthew Mannon.
