M. Sue Turnquist
August 26, 1923 - July 29, 2012
Marjorie Sue Turnquist, 88, of Gothenburg, Nebraska, died July 29, 2012 in Grand Island, NE.
Sue was born August 26, 1923 in Omaha, NE the seventh of 10 children to Dr. Homer David and Lola Cecile (Beard) Lurvey in Omaha, NE. She graduated from Hay Springs, NE high school and attended Chadron State College where she received her teaching certificate. She also received an accounting certificate from Omaha University. Sue lived for a short time in Arizona, where she worked as an accountant. She taught school at District 24, Valley, NE where she met Max Turnquist. She taught at Ashland Park, South Omaha, NE, the largest rural school in the world. Sue married Max Turnquist in 1958 at Gothenburg. To this union, two children were born - Mitzi and Greg. Sue was very active in her community and was a civic minded wife and mother. She served on the Red Cross Bloodmobile, was a Boy Scout & Girl Scout Leader, 4-H Leader, Job's Daughters, NCIP, volunteer Teacher's Aide, Heart Fund, President of the American Legion Auxiliary, Election Board, Gothenburg Community Playhouse, Girls State Selection Committee and Convention Counselor, Chairperson for Meals on Wheels, and MOPS. She enjoyed word puzzles, crafts, knitting crocheting, rubber stamping and making cards.
Survivors include daughter - Mitzi (Barrett) Stinson of Grand Island, NE; son - Gregory (Holly) Turnquist of Rochester Hills, MI; two grandsons -Gaven Turnquist, Kelton Turnquist; brother - Herbert (Imogene) Lurvey of Omaha, NE; sister - Lillian Thieman both of Omaha, NE; sister-in-law - Ellen Dennis of Arnold, NE; brother-in-law - Don (Kathy) Turnquist of Hutchinson, KS; along with nieces, nephews and extended family and friends.
Sue was preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, Wendell Max Turnquist on April 1, 2012; her parents, two sisters - Helen Andrews, Anne Waldeck; three brothers - John, Bill and Lloyd Lurvey.
Book Signing will be held at Thursday, August 16, 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at Blase-Strauser Memorial Chapel, Gothenburg, Nebraska; .
Memorial services will be held at First Baptist Church, Friday, August 17, 2012 at 10:30 am with Pastor Bill Ivey officiating.
Cremation was chosen. She will be inurned with her husband in Fort McPherson National cemetery, Maxwell, NE.
Memorials may be given to the MOPS or the American Red Cross.

Lyle Lee Aden
Born: March 2, 1945 - Death: July 31, 2012
Lyle Lee Aden, 67, of Gothenburg, Nebraska, died July 31, 2012 in Gothenburg, NE.
He was born March 2, 1945 at Gothenburg, NE, son of Alvin and Pauline (Garrelts) Aden.
Lyle grew up northeast of Gothenburg on the family farm. He graduated from Cozad High School. He lived in the Gothenburg and North Platte area. He farmed, worked for the North Platte Fire Department and the UPRR. Lyle married Peggy Atkinson-Johnson on October 26, 1985 at Banner United Methodist Church, Gothenburg. He was a member of the Banner United Methodist Church where he served on many church committees. Peggy & Lyle enjoyed the antics of 22 years of babysitting the neighborhood kids. He enjoyed camping, gardening and always had a good joke.
Surviving are wife, Peggy Aden of Gothenburg, NE, daughter - Brenda Hayes; two sons - Kelly Aden, Joel (Kim) Aden; three step-sons - David Johnson, Mike (Marci) Johnson, Mike (Jeremi) Wonch; two step-daughters - Chris (Randy) Roenfeldt, Melanie Hall; two sisters - Phyl (Karl) Kostbahn, Marian (Don) Knauss; brother-in-law Dee (Jo) Atkinson; 12 grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren; mother-in-law - Jean Atkinson; many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Lyle was preceded in death by his parents, and grandson, Cory Went.
Visitation will be held at Blase-Strauser Memorial Chapel, Gothenburg, Nebraska; Friday, August 3, 2012 1:00 pm - 8:00 pm with the family present from 6:00-8:00 pm.
Services will be held at Banner United Methodist Church, Saturday, August 4, 2012 at 2:00 pm with Rev. Janie Freeman officiating.
Interment will follow in the Peckham cemetery, Gothenburg, Nebraska.
Memorials may be given to the Banner United Methodist Church, PO Box 96, Brady, NE 69123.

Alfred L. Paul
June 20, 1922 - July 31, 2012
Alfred Lee Paul passed away July 31, 2012 at Stone Hearth Estates in Gothenburg. He was born June 20, 1922 to Henry and Bertha (Yanken) Paul at Maxwell, NE.
He attended high school in Maxwell where he excelled in football and track before enlisting in the army on Oct. 21, 1942. While in the service, he served as a supply clerk in the parachute department. He received a medal of good conduct, American theater of operations ribbon and victory medal. He was honorably discharged on Dec. 5, 1945. He later received an honorary certificate of graduation from Maxwell high school.
He married Marjorie June Sandberg in Minden, NE on May 28, 1960. They lived in Farmington, New Mexico; Sidney, North Platte, Lexington, and Kearney, NE before retiring to Gothenburg, NE.
He worked for Sidles Automotive in Sidney and North Platte, NE. He worked at Sixth Street Grocery Store in Lexington, NE. He also ran the American Legion club and Al�s Liquor in Lexington. He sold chemicals for Panther Chemical Co. statewide and received the Rookie of the Year award in 1963. He sold hot water pressure washers for 40 years before retiring.
He and his brother Charles and good friend Don Ostendorf raced stock cars for many years. He and Marge enjoyed traveling in their fifth wheel camper to Arizona, Texas, and Canada. They enjoyed collecting antiques and jewelry. He enjoyed playing pool and attending his children and grandchildren�s sporting events. He was a member of the American Legion, serving as post commander for several years, he was an active member of the 40 and 8 Veterans club.
Survivors include son John L. (Danita) Paul, Gothenburg; two daughters Jodie (Denney) Ovenden, Craig, CO; Deborah Burns, Silva, NC; step-son Eric (Susan) Van Meakins, Loveland, CO; step-daughter Deborah (Michael) Bacon, Gothenburg; two sisters Henrietta (Joe) Armitage, Neligh NE, and Leola Schrecongost, Denver, CO; two sisters-in-law Doris (Robert) Kramer, Stapleton, NE; Bea Grass, Kearney, NE; grandchildren Lee (Diane) Ovenden, Ivins, UT, Kim Brock (Critt) Shook, Silva, NC, Seth (Emily) Bacon, Denver, CO, Deric Meakins, Angel (David) Kwiatkowski, Fort Collins, CO, Sean Van Meakins, Loveland, CO, Alex Paul and Tabitha Paul, Kearney, NE; great grand children Jackson, Jude and Lily Meakins, Taylor Ovenden and Addie Ovenden, Abbot Bacon, and Eva Kwiatkowski and many nephews and nieces.
Preceded in death by his parents; wife, Marjorie; brothers Charles and Stanley; sisters Leora Cooper and Evelyn Schrecongost; brother-in-law and sister-in-law Leonard and Mary Jane Springer, and brother-in-law Kenneth Grass; son Alfred P. Paul; stepson Carl L. Meakins; grandsons Thadeus Van Meakins, Jeremy Paul, Danny Ovenden.
Graveside services Monday, Aug. 13 at Fort McPherson National cemetery, Reverend Don O�Brien officiating, Luncheon following services at the Maxwell Town Hall, 114 S.Pine St. Maxwell Ne.

Cora Evelyn Devine
February 28, 1925 - August 21, 2012
Cora Evelyn Devine, 87, of Gothenburg, Nebraska, died August 20, 2012 at Stone Hearth Estates in Gothenburg, NE.
She was born February 28, 1925 in Gothenburg, NE, daughter of James and Grace (Seimering) Gray.
Cora's father died when she was seven years old and her family lived in Gothenburg until her mother married Ralph Helberg. The family then lived north of Brady later moving to Callaway. Cora then lived with Roy & Mable Nichols so she could graduate from Gothenburg High School with the class of 1943. She married Morris Devine on January 29, 1945, and they made their home north of Cozad until moving north of Gothenburg to her family's land. Morris and Cora worked hard making the land into their home of 67 years. Cora helped Morris on the farm as well as raising their four children, Ron, Brad, Tim and Linda. She still found time to enjoy herself at birthday club, neighborhood coffee club, teaching Sunday School, Bible School, and the church quilters. Cora could always be found embroidering or sewing something. There was always coffee brewing and something good to eat when you stopped by the house.
Cora was very proud of her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren and will be missed deeply.
Survivors include her husband Morris, three sons - Ron (Charlene) Devine, Brad (Jackie) Devine, Tim (Roxie) Devine; daughter - Linda (Nick) Swan; 12 grandchildren - Kelli (Rod) Mattson, Kristi Phillipson, Charity Hilton, Andy (Holly Turner) Devine, Carla Devine, Dusty (Amy Manley) Devine, Jake (Janell) Ritz, Luke Ritz, Timari Devine, Mandy (Brett) Eddie, Tyler (Ainsley) Swan, Charity Hilton; 16 great grandchildren - Colter, Chaleigh, Cadie Mattson, Emma and Brody Phillipson, Kylie Devine, Tyler and Jacob Devine, Kennedy and Cooper Ritz, Kharissa, Kael, Karryn Eddie, Emery and Drake Swan, Jaxon Earll; step-sister Bel Kubicka; along with extended family and friends.
Cora was preceded in death by her parents, stepfather, granddaughter Markie Rae Devine, step-brothers Stan Helberg, Lloyd Helberg, Roland Helberg and step-sister Eleanor Nelson.
Visitation will be held at Blase-Strauser Memorial Chapel, Gothenburg, Nebraska; Thursday, August 23, 2012 9:00 am - 8:00 pm, with the family present from 6-8.
Funeral Services will be held at Zion Lutheran Church, August 24, 2012 at 10:30 am with Pastor Don Wilken officiating.
Interment will follow in the Zion Lutheran cemetery, Gothenburg, Nebraska.

Edward Stevens
Born: December 19, 1920 - Death: August 21, 2012
Edward Peter Stevens, 91, of Gothenburg, NE, died August 21, 2012 at his home north of Gothenburg, NE, surrounded by his family.
Edward was born December 19, 1920 to Peter E. and Mary A. Fickenscher Stevens at Gothenburg, NE. He attended schools in Gothenburg, served his country in World War II in the Pacific Theatre as a member of the 810th military police company in Hawaii for three years. Following his discharge from the army, he became a farmer-rancher in the Gothenburg area.
On May 26, 1946 he married Luella E. Teel of Farnam. They made their home northeast of Gothenburg for 65 years. Edward was an active member of Christ Lutheran Church and American Lutheran Church, serving on church council and the building committee when the churches merged. He was also a school board member when District 100-R was formed.
Ed was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He is survived by his two sons, Kenneth(Barbara) of Brady, Ronald (Connie Jo) of Gothenburg, and his two daughters, Kathleen (Terry) Williams of McCook and Jacqueline Tomrdle of Colorado Springs, CO, a brother, Orvin (Shirley) Stevens and brother-in-law Paul Johnson all of Gothenburg. He is also survived by four grandsons, eight granddaughters, 15 great-grandsons, 10 great-granddaughters and many beloved nephews and nieces.
He is preceded by his wife Luella, his parents, brothers Albert and Richard Stevens, sisters Rosina Franzen, Marie Ellison, Tillie Johnson and Katherine Vieselmeyer, a son-in-law Bruce Tomrdle and a great-grandson Mickale Rosner.
After a visit with Ed, if you didn't leave the farm laughing from hearing his stories, you weren't listening.

Edna Maurer
February 10, 1912 - October 3, 2012
Edna Earle Maurer, 100, of Gothenburg, Nebraska, died October 3, 2012 at Hilltop Estates in Gothenburg, NE.
She was born February 10, 1912 in Gothenburg, daughter of Robert and Grace (Aunspaugh) Davis.
Edna graduated from Gothenburg High, class of 1931. She taught school at District 81R for three years and married Collis Maurer on June 7, 1935. The couple had two boys, Richard and George. They farmed in Lincoln county where they raised corn, pigs, cows, chickens, a garden. Edna loved to cook, raise chickens, gardening and playing games. She was a member of the Union Aides Society and the American Lutheran Church.
Surviving are her son Richard Maurer of Gothenburg, NE; five grandchildren: Darren (ShLoe) Maurer, Lea Anne (Sean) Hedges, Troy (Kim) Maurer, Jason (Melissa) Maurer and Greg (Nicole) Maurer, 13 great grandchildren, one great great grandson, along with many extended family.
Edna was preceded in death by husband, Collis H. Maurer in 1981; son, George Maurer in 1998; her parents; four sisters, Helen Giboney, Jessie Davis, Opal Kicker, Dorothy Davis; two brothers Kenneth and Wyatt Davis.
Visitation will be held at Blase-Strauser Memorial Chapel, Gothenburg, Nebraska; Thursday, October 04, 2012 1:00 pm - 8:00 pm.
Services will be held at American Lutheran Church, Friday, October 5, 2012 at 10:00 am with Pastor Tom Wilson, Lonna Grabenstein PMA officiating.
Interment will follow in the Peckham cemetery, Gothenburg, Nebraska.
Memorials may be given to the American Lutheran Church Kitchen Fund or Youth Groups, 1512 Avenue G, Gothenburg, NE 69138.

Valta M. Cruse
February 15, 1942 - October 14, 2012
Valta Mae Cruse, 70, of McCook formerly of Maywood, Nebraska, died October 14, 2012 following a battle with illness at her home in McCook, NE.
She was born February 15, 1942 in Benkelman, NE, daughter of Lloyd Guy and Mable Mamie (Mcilvanie) Little.
Val grew up at Benkelman and attended school there. She lived at Benkelman, El Paso, TX; McDonald, KS; Wray, CO; Imperial, Wauneta, North Platte, Wellfleet, Maywood, and McCook, NE.Valta married Philip Cruse on December 22, 1975 at Holyoke, CO. She worked as a waitress, flagger, homemaker and sales. She enjoyed card games, Bingo, and handicrafts.
Surviving are husband, Philip Leroy Cruse of McCook, NE; Danny (Kathy) Hallagin of Lawton, OK; Robert (Ann) Hallagin of Fullerton, NE; Philip Cruse Jr. of Scribner, NE; John Smith of McCook, NE; Leroy Cruse (Trimisha) of Lincoln, NE; Betty Jo (David Fulkerson) Hartpence of La Grange, IN; Tamice (David) Moore of Belgrade, NE; Crystal (Ed) Livingston of McCook, NE; sister, Marlis Stuteville of Wray, CO; sister-in-law Elizabeth Jacobs of Loveland, CO; 27 grandchildren and 23 great grandchildren.
Val was preceded in death by father, Lloyd Guy Little, mother, Mabel Mamie Little, sister, Dora Studdard, brothers Daniel Little, Rex Little, and Verland Little, daughter, Debbie Hallagin.
Graveside services will be held at Maywood cemetery, Monday, October 29, 2012 at 2:00 pm.

Bruce W. Lobdell
Born: April 12, 1929 - Death: October 14, 2012
Bruce William Lobdell, 83, of Gothenburg, Nebraska, died October 14, 2012 in Gothenburg, NE.
Bruce was born on April 12, 1929 to Everet and Ella (Dodge) Lobdell in Lexington, NE. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran Church in Cozad, NE He attended Lexington High School and joined the US Army in 1948 and served his country until 1950. On September 30, 1950 he was united in marriage to Dorothy Helen Cler Wood. To this union, three children were born: Gary Lobdell, Marlene (Larry) Fiese, and Sandi (Mike) Brown.
Bruce and his wife farmed in the Cozad area until he went to work for Monroe Auto Equipment. He retired from Monroe’s in 1991. They enjoyed 13 years of traveling after his retirement where they saw 49 of the 50 states. Bruce was an avid gardener. He took great pride in his hostas and flowers. Bruce was also an avid Husker Fan. However, Bruce’s true love was his family. He always had a special place in his heart for his kids and grandkids.
Bruce was preceded in death by his parents Everet and Ella, three sisters - Pat, Caroline, and Beverly; one brother Rodney, and a step-daughter Lana.
Survivors include his wife Dorothy Lobdell, son Gary Lobdell of Lincoln, daughter Marlene Fiese of Gothenburg, daughter Sandi Brown of North Platte; grandchildren: Jason, Casey, Scott, Cameron, Torey, Hillary, Whitney, step-grandchildren Josh, Cassie, Chantel and great-grandchildren Ava, Cash, Brady, Jada, Presley, Kenney and Carter.
Visitation will be held at Blase-Strauser Memorial Chapel, Gothenburg, Nebraska; Wednesday, October 17, 2012 1:00 pm - 8:00 pm.
Services will be held at American Lutheran Church, October 18, 2012 at 10:30 am with Pastor Tom Wilson, Lonna Grabenstein PMA officiating.
Interment will follow in the Fort McPherson National cemetery.
