Francis Canale
Francis Canale, 91, died Oct. 14 at his home in Centreville, Va.
In 1945, he married Margaret Dunham, Jewell, at Ft. Riley where he was on active duty with the U.S. Army and she was a student at Kansas State University. He was a public school administrator in the state of New York most of his working years.
Besides his wife, he is survived by five sons, two daughters and their families. His sister-in-law, Olivia Dunham Pennington, Raymore, Mo., and her son, Philip Pennington, Weatherby Lake, Mo. His funeral was held Oct. 24 with burial at Quantico National cemetery, Triangle, Va.

Barbara Jean Koester
Barbara Jean Koester, 67, died last Wednesday at Parkview Haven Nursing Home in Deshler. She was born in a small house in Deshler on April 20, 1941, to Irvin and Loveda (Schoenholz) Higel.
Barbara was Irvin and Loveda's only child. The family lived on numerous farmsteads during her childhood and she attended several rural schools in the Deshler area. She graduated from Deshler High School in 1959 and on Aug. 23 of that year she married Marvin Koester, also of rural Deshler, at St. John Lutheran Church. This union was blessed with three children.
As a member of Peace Lutheran Church for 45 years, Barbara taught Sunday school and vacation Bible school, was active in the women's circle, sang in the choir, served on the altar guild, and volunteered for many other service activities. At age 13 she began playing the organ and played at church services, weddings, nursing homes and other occasions. She continued playing until cancer treatments affected her hands a few years ago. Barbara enjoyed creating cross-stitch pictures and making cakes, especially birthday cakes for each grandchild. She had a life-long love affair with baseball and she rarely missed a televised Cubs game. She and Marvin traveled to Europe, Alaska, Hawaii, Panama and many other places in the U.S. Many will miss her ringing the doorbell as an Avon representative who often did as much visiting as selling.
Barbara is survived by her husband: Marvin Koester, rural Deshler; three children: Mrs. William Mize (Rebecca), rural Deshler, Laurie Koester, Deshler, and Timothy Koester, Dubuque, Iowa; four grand children, Joshua Mize, Portland, Ore., Lauren Mize, rural Deshler, Kayleigh Koester and Callen Koester, both of Dubuque, Iowa. She was preceded in death by her parents: Irvin and Loveda Higel.
Services were held Monday at Peace Lutheran Church, Deshler. The Rev. Phillip Nielsen presided. Interment was in the Peace Lutheran cemetery. Pallbearers were James Peters, Jon Peters, Lyle Johnson, Allen Higel, Kim Schoenholz and Dennis Degenhardt.
Ahrendts Funeral Home, Deshler, was in charge of arrangements.

Bernice Kruse
Bernice S. Kruse, 67, Lincoln, Kan., died last Wednesday in Topeka. She was born Feb. 4, 1940, in rural Lincoln County, the daughter of John Henry Edward and Marie (Wacker) Meier.
Bernice graduated from high school and was a homemaker.
Survivors include two sons, David and Terry; two daughters, Arlis Hirsh and Jeanine Davis; brothers, Leroy, Richard, Ronnie and Eugene; sisters LaVerna Kirn, Thelma Klausen, Larinda Meili, Regina Henry and Joann Schultz; nine grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Loren Kruse; parents; son Daniel; brothers, Melvin, Robert and Hubert; and a sister, Dorothy.
Services were held Monday at St. John Lutheran Church. Interment was in St. John Lutheran cemetery. Hall Funeral Home, Lincoln, was in charge of arrangements.

Pamela Sue Nowak
Pamela Sue Nowak, 54, Salina, died Dec. 24. She had worked as an accountant for Eye Care Associates of Salina.
Pamela Sue Woods was born in Salina on Aug. 7, 1954, the daughter of Warren Rex and Lois Maxine (Luckey) Woods, Salina. She was united in marriage to David L. Nowak on Aug. 30, 1974, in Salina. She graduated from Salina South in 1972, a former member of the Salina Drum and Bugle Corps, she received an associate's degree from the Salina Area Vo-Tech.
Pam also worked at St. John's Hospital and Salina Regional Health Center in medical records. She attended the Salina Bible Church. She enjoyed bowling, ceramics, scrap booking and genealogy.
Survivors include her husband, Dave, of the home; parents, Warren R. Woods, Belleville, and mother, Lois M. Woods, Salina; two daughters, Chrissy Nowak and Kelle Hull; a grandson, Jace Hull; granddaughter, Torah Hull; a sister, Terri Melby; and a brother, Rod Woods.
Her funeral was held at the Salina Bible Church at 10 a.m. Tuesday. Burial followed in the St. Mary's Catholic cemetery, Gorham.
Carlson-Geisendorf Funeral Home, Salina, was in charge of arrangements.

Garrett Brown
Eli Garrett Brown, 93, was born Aug. 17, 1915, in Asheboro, N.C. His parents were James Audie and Nordie Lelate (Cox) Brown. He was a farmer. He died on Dec. 21 at Presbyterian Manor in Clay Center, Kan.
His first 21 years were in North Carolina. He came to Kansas in the late 1930s, looking for employment. He had a number of cousins in Glen Elder that helped him become familiar with the area. He was living with a cousin, Jason, and Katie Lowdermilk when a neighbor girl was asked to help with household duties. That was when he met Neva Belle Stoeber, whom he married on Dec. 4, 1940. To this union two children were born.
Their married life began in the Glen Elder area but they moved to Cawker City in 1947. They lived there until moving back to the farm in 1963. This move was to the farm that Neva's parents had purchased in 1917. Garrett and Neva farmed together until retiring to Clay Center in 2001.
Garrett was devoted to his farm work. He took great pride in the cattle he raised. Each one had a name and personality! He also liked to "make better" or construct from scratch the implements he used, and tried to do his own machinery repair. He believed in soil conservation making his own terraces and using low-till farming methods. He said if he did not take care of his topsoil it would go to his neighbors. He and Neva did their own haying, making the bales smaller as the years wore on, finally getting them to "Grandma-size.".
He was one of the farmers who helped provide twine to his father-in-law for the "World's Largest Ball of Twine" in Cawker City.
He liked to teach his four grandchildren about farm life, as well as to learn about their activities.
Garrett was preceded in death by brothers, Ray, Van, Hoyt and Virgil; a sister Winnie Hammer; and a grandson, Jimmy Garrett.
Survivors include his wife of 68 years, Neva; a son, Larry, Chicago, Ill.; a daughter, Mrs. Dwight Ferguson (Doris), Clay Center; grandchildren, Rebecca Phinney, David Brown, Joe Ferguson and Sara Ahlers; seven great-grandchildren; and a brother J. Clinton Brown.
Services were held Friday at McDonald Funeral Home, Beloit, with Warren Inskeep officiating. Casket bearers were family members. Interment was in Glenwood cemetery, Glen Elder. Arrangements were provided by McDonald-Roberts Funeral Service, Beloit.

Agnes Woita
Agnes H. Woita, 101, of Wahoo died Friday, June 11, 2004, at Saunders County Care Center in Wahoo.
Agnes Schultz was born April 11, 1903, in Plasi. She attended District 19 School in rural Saunders County. She married Andrew Woita on Oct. 14, 1924, at Sts. Cyril and Methodius Catholic Church in Plasi. The couple farmed in rural Weston until 1942. They moved to rural Wahoo where they farmed until retiring in 1967. They then moved into Wahoo. She was a homemaker, raised a large garden, crocheted and helped care for the livestock. Her husband preceded her in death on Jan. 7, 1995.
She was a former member of Sts. Cyril and Methodius Catholic Church in Plasi and St. Ludmilla Guild. She was a member of St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Wahoo and Catholic Workman Branch 17 of Plasi.
Survivors include: a twin son, Richard (and wife, Rosanne) Woita of Fremont; daughter-in-law, Bernadette "Bernie" Woita of Colon; a son-in-law, Denis Stieren of Arlington; 13 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.
She was also preceded in death by a son, Raymond "Ray" Woita; a daughter, Rita Stieren; a grandson, Steven Woita; four brothers, Joe, John, Jim and Anton Schultz; and two sisters, Mary Paseka and Anna Chvatal.
The Mass Christian Burial will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Wahoo with the Rev. John Cooper officiating. A rosary will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Svoboda Funeral Home in Wahoo. Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home and will continue one hour prior to mass at the church. Burial will be in St. Francis cemetery in Wahoo.
In Lieu of flowers, family prefers memorials to St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church or St. Wenceslaus Elementary School, both in Wahoo.
Svoboda Funeral Home in Wahoo is in charge of arrangements

Arla Berggren
Funeral sesrvice for Arla M. Berggren, 73, Snyder, Okla., were held Tuesday in the First United Methodist Church, Snyder, with the Rev. Patrick McPherson, officiating.
Mrs. Berggren died Saturday in a Lawton, Okla. hospital.
Burial will be in the Fairlawn cemetery, Sndyer, under the direction of Becker Funeral Home of Snyder.
She was born April 9, 1935, in Swanton, Neb., to Ervin and Celia (Reid) Essman. She graduated from Swanton High School in 1952, and received her teaching certificate from Fairbury Junior College in 1954. She married Dean Berggren on June 1, 1956, in Western, Neb. She worked for Snyder Public Schools for 12 years in the lunch room. She was a homemaker and a member of the Worldwide Church of God.
She is survived by her husband, Dean, of the home, three children, Mike Berggren, Yukon, Okla., Christine Berggren, Snyder, Okla., Steven Berggren, Marietta, Ga.; two sisters, Mrs. LaVern Pederson (Twila), Fresno, Calif.; and Mrs. John Martin (Lucille) Windsor, Mo., a brother, Bill Essman, Fairbury, and five grandchildren, Jeremy Berggren, Carmel, Ind., Steve Rogers, College Station, Texas; Stephanie Rogers, Edmond, Okla., Joshua Stainthrop, Athens, Ga., and Jefferey Stainthorp, Marietta, Ga.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Neil, and a sister, Donna Essman.

Carl Morris
Carl E. Morris, 78, of Fremont died Saturday, June 12, 2004, at Arbor Manor in Fremont.
The funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Moser Memorial Chapel in Fremont with the Rev. Tom Nevius of Fremont Alliance Church officiating. A prayer service will be 7 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Visitation will be from 2-9 p.m. Tuesday with family receiving friends from 6:30-8 p.m. and continues 9 a.m. to service time, all at the funeral home. Military honors will be conducted by the Fremont Honor Guard of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 854 and American Legion Post 20 following the funeral service at the funeral home. Burial will be in Memorial cemetery in Fremont.
A memorial has been established to Fremont Alliance Church.

Kenneth Hurd
Kenneth Hurd, 90, the son of William and Nellie (Dixon) Hurd, was born Dec. 31, 1917 on a farm north of Webber. He died Christmas Day at the Superior Good Samaritan Center.
Kenneth attended Superior Public Schools and graduated from Superior High School with the Class of 1934. He was united in marriage to Helen Marie McElroy on July 8, 1941, at Quinter, Kan. This union was blessed with three children, Wayne, Margaret and an infant son who died in 1953.
He was a member of the Reformed Presbyterian Church and now the Grace Community Evangelical Free Church in Superior. Kenneth was a manager at the Ideal Market in Superior. He also worked for the Safeway and Jack and Jill stores in Superior as butcher and produce manager. Helen and Kenneth enjoyed their retirement years in Superior. Kenneth entered the Superior Good Samaritan Center in 2006.
Kenneth was a founding member of the Superior Lions Club, Boy Scout leader, church elder and former secretary of the Superior Bowling League. He liked fishing, bowling, photography and singing.
Preceding him in death were his parents; his wife, Helen, May 14, 2001; an infant son; two brothers, Hollis and Wallace; and one sister, Lucille Shill.
Survivors include his son, Wayne, Beatrice, daughter, Mrs. Brian Stranghoner (Margaret), Wichita; four grandchildren, Russell, Darrell, Mrs. Robb Barker (Erica); Mrs. Eric Gilbert (Kara); three great-grandchildren, Jacob, Lindsey and Carlie, and one sister, Arlene Dugas, Wichita.
Services were held Monday from the Megrue-Price Funeral Home Chapel in Superior, with Pastor David Johnson officiating.
Pallbearers were Brian Stranghoner, Robb Barker, Russell Hurd, Darrell Hurd, Don Blackstone and Richard Nelson.
Interment was in the Evergreen cemetery.

Walter Eggers
Walter John Eggers, 84, the son of Herman K. and Emilie (Greiner) Eggers, was born Feb. 9, 1925, at his parents farm one half mile south of Byron. He died Saturday at Thayer County Health Services, Hebron.
He attended Byron Public Schools and received an associate's degree from the University of Nebraska at Lincoln in animal science. He was a 57-year member of the Bethany Lutheran Church, Ruskin. He entered the U.S. Navy on Feb. 25, 1945, and was honorably discharged on July 5, 1946. On Aug, 20, 1950, he married Alice Heitmann at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Byron. To this union three children were born, Catherine, Mark and Michael.
Walt was a charter member of the Ruskin Lions Club, a charter member of the Superior Elks Lodge, a member of the Ruskin Volunteer Fire Department, a member of the American Legion for 59 years, 11 with the Byron Legion and 48 with the Ruskin Legion.
He was a member of the UNL Alumni Association, the UNL Rodeo Team, and a former catcher for the Byron town baseball team. He enjoyed watching his children and grandchildren's sporting activities and was proud of their accomplishments.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Eberhardt and Paul Eggers.
He is survived by his wife, Alice, of Ruskin, children, Mrs. Daniel Parker (Catherine), Lincoln, Neb., Mark Eggers, Ruskin, and Michael Eggers, Superior; six grandchildren, Chad and Todd Parker, Nathan Eggers, Mrs. Jeff Koch (Lesha), Angela and Nichole Eggers; one great-grandson, Alec Parker; one sister, Gertrude Mason, Deshler, two brothers, Max Eggers, Byron, and Kenneth Eggers, Chester.
Services were held from the Bethany Lutheran Church in Ruskin, with the Rev. Evelyn Phillips officiating.
Pallbearers were Chad and Todd Parker, Nathan, Angela and Nicole Eggers, and Lesha Koch
Interment with full military rites was in the Spring Creek cemetery, Ruskin.
Megrue-Price Funeral Home, Superior, was in charge of arrangements.
