Virginia Clark
Virginia Ilene Reece Clark was born Sept. 1, 1920, to Lillian and Roy Reece in Mankato, Kan. She died March 20, 2009, at Mitchell County Hospital.
Virginia was raised on a farm west of Mankato. She grew up with 11 siblings. Virginia and Edwin were united in marriage on April 12, 1973. Virginia was employed by the Best Western in Beatrice, Neb. She enjoyed her job as a waitress and hostess. Later Edwin and Virginia moved to Jewell, Kan., in 1982 where they enjoyed their retirement.
Virginia was preceded in death by: four brothers, Roy Reece, Lewis Reece, Leo Ryan and Lloyd Reece; three sisters, Bonnie Popalawski, Esther Baker and Betty Newton; a son Eugene Humphrey; and step-son Richard Clark.
She is survived by two sisters Edna Dean, Denver, Colo., Alice Orr, North Platte, Neb.; two brothers, David "Corky" Reece, Pueblo, Colo., Larry Reece, Jewell, Kan.; sister-in-law, Mildred Reece, Randall, Kan,; brother-in-law, Frank Dehn, Jewell, Kan.; two sons, James Humphrey, Jewell, Kan., and Stanley Humphrey and wife Loretta, Salina, Kan.; daughter, Mary Glenn, and husband, Jerry, Newton, Kan.; daughter-in-law, Sharon Day; 12 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. She will be missed dearly.
Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. today (Thursday), March 26, at Mount Hope cemetery just west of Mankato, Kan. Memorials may be given to Mount Hope cemetery, Jewell City Park or Solomon Valley Hospice. Kleppinger Funeral Home, 409 Broadway, Jewell, Kan., is handling arrangements.

Max Field
Max N. Field, 74, retired Sedgwick County Bureau director, died March 20, at Homestead Health Center, Wichita.
Max was born Jan. 19, 1935, to Clarence and Marjorie (Clemons) Field, Burr Oak. Max was a graduate of Planeview High School with the Class of 1953. Until his illness, he enjoyed going to the Friday breakfasts with Planeview classmates. Until the past few years, Max served on the Planeview alumni class reunion committee.
Max enlisted in the United States Marine Corps where he served as an ordinance specialist.He graduated from Friends University while working nights loading baggage at the bus depot. He worked as a psychiatric social worker in Neodesha, Kan., and as a psychiatric aide at Osawatomie State Hospital. While working there, he met his wife, Cassandra, at a state conference in Wichita. Max also worked weekends during this time at the mental health center in Pittsburg, Kan.
Max and Cassandra (Cassie) Morris married in 1964, and had a wonderful marriage for more than 44 years. Two children were born to this union, Kevin Wayne Field (deceased in 2000) and Kristi Marie Emerson.
Max earned a master's degree in social work from Kansas University in 1966. He enjoyed his career and felt fortunate he was helping people. Max worked several years at Sedgwick County Mental Health Department.
Max enjoyed dancing, going to the south Y, exercising, and visiting with friends. He loved all sporting events and ran on the track until age 72. Max maintained a positive outlook, even through his illness.
Max was a member of the American Legion and Central Community Church.
Predeceasing Max, in addition to his parents, were his brothers, Bud Lowell Field and Lewis Field; a sister, Ila Schmid; and a son, Kevin Field. Survivors include his wife, Cassie; daughter, Kristi Emerson; four grandchildren, Amy, Sophie, Gus and Aidan Emerson, Wichita; a brother, Joe Field, Copperas Cove, Texas; mother-in-law Jewell Morris, Pittsburg, Kan.; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Judi and John Mahin, Shawnee, Kan., and nieces, nephews and cousins.
The family wishes to thank the professional and caring staff of Homestead Health Center and Dr. Steven Penner and Amedisys Hospice Services.
Services were held on Monday, March 23, 10:30 a.m. at Melby Mortuary Chapel, Mankato, Kan., with Pastor Laura Fricker officiating. Ruth Clegg was the organist. Wayne Fogo, soloist, sang "It Is Well with My Soul," "Amazing Grace" and "How Great Thou Art." Military honors were presented by the United States Marine Honor Guard. Burial was in Esbon cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family requested memorials to Rainbows United, Cerebral Palsy Research Foundation and Central Community Church.
Max will be respected, loved and deeply missed by his family and friends. We thank you, Max, for your wonderful life!

Karl Hesser
Karl Van Hesser,54, was born Oct. 21, 1954, in Superior to Norman Neal and Telva Ruth (Shellhase) Hesser. He died March 16, at his home in Osborne.
Karl grew up in Mankato and after high school graduation, served three years in the U.S. Army.
He returned to Mankato and worked at the elementary school as a custodian.
He attended welding school and was employed as a welder from 1980 to 1982 at Boeing in Wichita. He also worked as a miner and as a fiberglass technician.
In 1982 he returned to Mankato to work with his father at his business, Mankato Autobody for several years. After his father's death, he stayed in Mankato to care for his mother and returned to USD 278 as a high school custodian until the school's consolidation.
Most recently he worked in Osborne at Hardman Lumber.
Karl was devoted to his loved ones, family, friends and pets. He had a great sense of humor and was a great shot with his rifles.
Karl was preceded in death by his parents, Norman and Ruth Hesser.
He was never married . Survivors include his siblings, a sister, Cynthia Hesser, Tonganoxie; twin sister, Robin Cockran, Wichita; brother, William Hesser, Sturgeon, Mo.; eight nieces and nephews and their families;
His funeral was held Friday at the First Baptist Church, Mankato, with Pastor Neolin Taylor officiating. Casketbearers were provided by the United States Army Honor Guard. Honorary casketbearers were Bill Hesser, Tyler Noll, Samuel Cochran, Christopher Noll, Robert Turner, Rick Lehrling, Bruce Burkhart and Alan Hornbussel.
Interment was in the Mount Hope cemetery, Mankato, with military honors by United States Army Honor Guard, Ft. Riley, and V.F.W. Post 7830, Mankato.
Melby Mortuary, Mankato, was in charge of arrangements.

Mark Miller
Mark Luman Miller, 65, died Thursday, at Homestead Assisted Living Facility in Manhattan.
He was born Oct. 4, 1943, in Belleville, the son of Merle Monroe and Erma Ann (Schmedemann) Miller.
He was a 1961 graduate of Belleville High School and graduated in 1965 with a bachelor of arts degree in technical journalism from Kansas State University, Manhattan.
He was a member of Delta Tau Delta fraternity, business manager of the KSU Royal Purple yearbook for three years and was elected to the KSU Board of Student Publications. Upon graduation, he was commissioned through K-State Army ROTC as a second lieutenant in the Signal Corps.
He married Diane Marie Hertlein on July 17, 1965. They were the parents of two daughters, Deborah Diane and Nicole Marie.
Lt. Miller was called to active Army duty in 1966 at the height of the Vietnam War. He graduated from U. S. Army Signal Officers Basic course in Ft. Gordon, Ga., and was assigned to Ft. Huachuca, Ariz., where their first daughter was born. Lt. Miller wrote speeches for several general officers.
He was next assigned to combat duty in Vietnam as a platoon leader and later as a company commander with a combat area signal company. He served in Vietnam in 1966 and 1967. He received the U. S. Army's commendation medal. Upon returning home, he continued his military service as a company commander in the U. S. Army Reserves at Ft. Riley. He left active military duty in 1975 with the rank of captain.
As a youngster, he worked for The Belleville Telescope newspaper. In 1967, he permanently joined the family company. Eventually he assumed ownership of the company.
The company known as Telescope, Inc. owned newspapers in Belleville, Washington, Superior and Hebron as well as the Farmer Stockman of the Midwest.
Along with his wife, Diane, they built The Gym fitness center in Belleville. He was a former director of the Peoples National Bank in Belleville.
Throughout his life he enjoyed auto racing and was an active member of the committee which manages the Belleville High Banks race track from 1972 until his death. He was a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, past board member of the Belleville County Club, Knights of Columbus, Kansas Press Association, Kansas State University Alumni Association, the Belleville Lions Club and other organizations.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Diane, on March 12, 2002, and his parents, Merle and Erma Miller.
He is survived by his daughters, Mrs. Chris Drewry (Debbie), Redondo Beach, Calif., and Nikki Miller, Manhattan; grandchildren Jacob, Amanda. Benedict and Samuel; a brother, Monte Miller, and his wife, Doris, Manhattan, and a sister, Mrs. Frank Laubhan (Margo), Pratt.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at St. Edwards Catholic Church, Belleville, with Fathers Don Zimmerman and Cornelius Khine officiating. Inurment will be in the Belleville City cemetery. A vigil service and rosary will be held at 7 p.m., Thursday, April 2, at the church. Tibbetts-Fischer Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
The Mark Miller Educational Scholarship for Journalism has been established.

Annetta Daharsh
The funeral for Annetta J. Daharsh, 68, of Wahoo, formerly of Fremont, will be 2 p.m. Monday at Svoboda Funeral Home in Wahoo.
She died Wednesday, Nov. 24, 2004, at Nebraska Methodist Hospital in Omaha.
She was born in Prague on Sept. 15, 1936, to Frank and Agnes (Ficenec) Havelka. She attended St. Wenceslaus Elementary School in Wahoo. She married LeRoy "John" Daharsh on March 12, 1959, in Wahoo. She worked as a production laborer at the former Blue Star Foods Inc. in Wahoo. She later worked as a nurses aide at the former Haven House in Wahoo for many years. She was also a housewife. Her spouse preceded her in death on July 22, 1990. She moved to Fremont after her husbands death and moved back to Wahoo in 2002.
Survivors include: two sons, Steve (and wife, Roseanne) Daharsh of Wahoo and Scott Daharsh of Lincoln; three daughters, Susan Nicholls, Cathy (Mrs. Doug) Watts, all of Wahoo, and Liz Kasischke and fiancé, Gorden Morhain, of Omaha; a brother, Frank Havelka of Wahoo; three sisters, Gertrude Nekuda, Mildred (Mrs. Albert) Vlasak, all of Wahoo, and Margaret McGarragh of LaCrescenta, Calif.; 13 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
She was also preceded in death by her parents, a brother and three sisters.
Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Sunday with family receiving friends from 4-6 p.m. Visitation continues Monday from 10 a.m. until service time at the funeral home. Burial will be in Sunrise North cemetery in Wahoo.
Svoboda Funeral Home in Wahoo is in charge of arrangements.

Effie Hoops
The funeral for Effie C. Hoops, 93, of North Bend will be 11 a.m. Friday at United Presbyterian Church in North Bend.
She died Tuesday, March 30, 2004, at Fremont Area Medical Center.
Effie Foust was born July 31, 1910, in Leigh. She grew up in Schuyler and attended Colfax County Schools. She married Lloyd I. Hoops on Jan. 18, 1934, in Belleville, Kan. They moved to rural North Bend in 1946 and moved into North Bend in 1959. Her husband preceded her in death March 13, 1997.
She was a member of United Presbyterian Church, Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary Post 8223 and the Birthday Club, all of North Bend.
Survivors include: four sons, Harlan (and wife, Betty) Hoops of Fremont, Bob (and wife, Nancy) Hoops and Dan (and wife, Glenna) Hoops, all of North Bend, and Milton (and wife, Cathy) Hoops of Columbus; eight daughters, Jean (Mrs. Bill) Wehrmann, Janice (Mrs. Bob) Smith, Lois (Mrs. Stan) Vachal and Dianne (Mrs. Rich) Vyhlidal, all of Fremont, JoAnn (Mrs. Charles) Devine of Oconto, Elna (Mrs. Bill) Lippincott of Blair, Marilyn (Mrs. Ken) Hassler of Dodge and Carolyn (Mrs. Ed) Vyhlidal of North Bend; a brother, Willard (and wife, Eleanor) Foust of West Point; two sisters, Iola (Mrs. Robert) Mentzer of Schuyler and Doris Saalfeld of Charleston, S.C.; 44 grandchildren, 63 great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren.
She also was preceded in death by three brothers and three sisters.
The Rev. Don Botic will officiate Fridays service. Visitation will be from 1-9 p.m. Thursday at Moser Memorial Chapel in North Bend and continues one hour prior to service time at the church. The family will receive friends from 6:30-9 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Woodland cemetery in North Bend.
Memorials have been established to United Presbyterian Church in North Bend and the North Bend Senior Center.

Shirley Shuck
Shirley Shuck, 82, the daughter of Clinton and Nettie (Stewart) Lindberg was born March 5, 1927, at Clay Center, Neb. She died Friday at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital, Hastings.
Shirley married Gordon Shuck on Feb. 6, 1946, at Mankato. This union was blessed with the birth of two children, one son and one daughter. She had been a long time member of the Church of the Plains in Edgar.
She was preceded in death by her parents and husband, Gordy, on Feb. 10, 2001.
Survivors include her son, Dr. David Shuck of The Villages, Fla.; a daughter, Jennifer Bondegard, Edgar; sisters, Cherole Trainor, Gwen Hoagland and Mrs. Bill Johnsen (JoAnn); five grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
Services were held Monday at the Church of the Plains, Edgar. The Rev. Stephen Price Gibson officiated. Burial was in the Edgar cemetery.
Williams Funeral Home, Edgar, was in charge of the arrangements.

Elmer Paul
Elmer Carl Louis Paul, 86, the son of Conrad and Emma (Fangmeier) Paul, was born March 13, 1923 at Jansen. He died last Wednesday at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital, Hastings.
He attended grade school and graduated from Plymouth High School with the Class of 1941.
In January 1946, he entered the United States Air Force and was honorably discharged in March 1947. After his discarge, he worked for Dempster Manufacturing in Beatrice.
On Sept. 28, 1947, he was united in marriage to Dorothy Heath. They lived in Beatrice until the spring of 1948, when they moved to a farm south of Deshler where he farmed for six years. He and Dorothy owned and managed a tavern in Plymouth for six years. In 1961, they moved to Hardy where he owned and operated Paul's Feed and Grinding Service.
Dorothy died in May, 1975, and he continued to operate the business on his own.
He was a member of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Superior, and American Legion Post 103 and a past member of the Elks Lodge 2197, Eagles Lodge 3010, and the Hardy Volunteer Fire Department and he served on the Hardy Village Board.
On Feb. 14, 1976, he married Bonnie (Durflinger) Tambke. She was the bookkeeper for the family business until their retirement in 1984.
They moved their home from Hardy to North of Superior in 1990.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Dorothy, two sisters, infant Ida, and Mathilda Schroeder.
He is survived by his wife, Bonnie; four step-daughters, Mrs. Don Sneath (Darla), Plainville; Mrs. Robert Robertson (Lori), Fairfield, Marsha Dreesen, Lincoln, Neb., and Lisa Tambke, Superior; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; three brothers, Otto, Deshler, Harry, Lincoln, Neb., and Louis, Beatrice; five sisters, Edna Kroeger, Oklahoma City; Elda Guthrie, Santa Fe, N. M., Elaine Ackerman, Beatrice, LaVerna Kokes, Lincoln, Neb., and Margret Morrow, Beatrice.
A private service was held with inurnment in the Evergreen cemetery, Superior.
Megrue-Price Funeral Home of Superior, was in charge of arrangements.
