Jay Platt
Jay Platt, 83, Fort Collins, Colo., died July 18. He was born March 25, 1926, on a farm near Mankato to Samuel and Claretta (Ayers) Platt.
Jay worked for the Kansas Highway Department for 39 years. When he retired, Jay moved to Springfield, Mo., to be near family. In 2005 he moved to Fort Collins to be closer to his sister and her family.
Jay is survived by: brother, Jim Platt, McCune; a sister, Mrs. Paul Harmon (Jan), Fort Collins, Colo.; six nieces and four nephews.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents; parents; brothers, Jerry and Joe; aunts and uncles.
A graveside committal service will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, July 27, at Mount Hope cemetery in Mankato.

Jay Don Timmons
Jay Don Timmons, 51, died Thursday. He was born July 10, 1959, in Smith Center. He was preceded in death by his father, Donald.
Survivors include a son, Zediah; two daughters, Taneasha Dawn Eckstrom and Andrea Morris; his mother, Roma Timmons; three brothers, Stevie, Clark and Christy; four sisters, Starling Copeland, Rhonda Timmons, Roe Jene Timmons, and Angie Timmons; former wife, Angie Timmons-Johanek; and four grandchildren. Services were held Tuesday at All Faiths Funeral Chapel, Smith Center. Burial was at Myer-Pleasant View cemetery, Athol.

John Roy Harris
John Roy Harris, age 94, Halfway, Mo., died Friday June 11, 2010, in Dallas County Care Center in Buffalo, Mo. He was born Dec. 12, 1915 to Riley and Ella May (Cooper) Harris. He was an educator. He taught fifth grade in Downs for many years and lived in Dispatch.
Mr. Harris was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Nell Mary (Anderson) Harris; four brothers, Alton Harris, Cecil Harris, Jesse Harris and Leo Harris; three sisters, Inez Hanks, Clara Harris and Ettie Harris.
He is survived by his niece and her husband, Janet and Jackie Bays, Halfway, Mo.
The funeral for John Roy Harris was held at 11 a.m. Monday, June 14, 2010, in Pitts Chapel of Bolivar with Brothers Jackie Bays, Jeff Julien and Ronald Harris officiating. Burial followed in the Smith Chapel cemetery in Gainesville, Mo. Friends and family may sign a guest book or send private condolences at: www.greenlawn funeralhome.com. Arrangements were entrusted to Pitts Chapel of Bolivar, Mo.

Lewis Schafer
Lewis A Schafer was born Oct. 22, 1919, in Jewell, Kan., to Gwen (Hower) Schafer and Benjamin H. Schafer.
He graduated from Jewell Rural High School in 1937 and attended Fort Hays State University in Hays, Kan., in 1937 and 1938. In 1940 and 1941 Lewis attended Kansas State University. On Aug. 4, 1942, Lewis and Twila May McDill were married . He served his country in the United States Navy during WW II from 1941 to 1945. Following his WW II military service, he returned to Kansas State University where he earned a bachelor of science. degree in agronomy in 1947 and a master's of science degree in plant pathology in 1948. He then taught at Kansas State University from 1948 to 1950 and conducted research at Cornell University from 1951 to 1954, prior to earning a doctorate degree in plant pathology at Cornell University in 1954. From 1954 to 1956 he was a plant pathologist for the Standard Oil Co. in Whiting, Ind. After founding Standard's plant pathology department. Lewis devoted the balance of his career pursuing his greatest joy, which was his endless dedication as a teacher. In that pursuit, he assisted countless students in achieving their highest potential.
In 1956 he became biology department head at Nebraska Wesleyan University. Shortly thereafter he was granted a leave to serve as visiting professor in the College of Agriculture at College Laguna, Philippines, during 1958 and 1959. In this capacity he orchestrated a new college curriculum under contract with Cornell University and the U.S. State Department. He later enjoyed another traveling tenure as visiting professor at the Inter American University in San German, Puerto Rico, in 1969.
Dr. Lewis A. Schafer retired as an eminently revered Nebraska Wesleyan University professor in 1985, but he never retired from being an inspirational and dedicated teacher. He proudly remembered his organizational associations as Phi Kappa Phi, Gamma Sigma Delta, Tri Beta, Farm House Fraternity and Sigma Xi.
On his personal side, Lewis will be equally remembered for his passionate dedication to family, and as a faithful member, deacon and elder of First Presbyterian Church. To have had the privilege of knowing this extraordinary man is to love all that he ever held dear.
Survivors include his wife, Twila May Schafer, of their home, Lincoln, Nebraska; two sons, Rodney E. Schafer, Lincoln, Nebraska, and Dennis A. Schafer and wife Kathy, Omaha, Nebraska; sisters-in-law Letha Lowdon, Downs, Kansas, and Alma McDill, Mankato, Kansas.
Lewis was preceded in death by his parents, Gwen (Hower) Schafer and Benjamin H. Schafer, and his brother, Arthur Eugene Schafer.
Services were held at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 10, 2010, from the First Presbyterian Church, Lincoln, Nebraska. Visitation was Friday, July 9, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. with family greeting friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., at Lincoln Memorial Funeral Home. Interment was in Lincoln Memorial Park. Condolences may be sent to www. lincolnfh.com.
Memorials may be directed to Lewis A. Schafer and Paul Laursen Scholarship fund at Nebraska Wesleyan University, Lincoln, Nebraska, or First Presbyterian Church, Lincoln, Nebraska.

Mary Schindler
Mary Schindler, 82, Manhattan, died June 9 at the Good Shepherd Hospice House in Manhattan. She was born June 30, 1928, at her grandmother's home in Ionia. She was the daughter of Homer Hamilton and Alma Evelyn (Dietz) Roach, Jewell.
Mary earned a bachelor's degree in psychology and a master's degree in curriculum and education from Kansas State University. She was an avid K-State fan and long time member of Alpha Xi Delta sorority. On Jan. 26, 1958, she married Dale Schindler.
Mary taught at Amanda Arnold and Marlatt elementary schools in Manhattan for 13 years. Following her retirement in 1993, she decided to follow her dream and joined the Peace Corps. She observed her 64 and 65 birthdays in Poland as a Peace Corp volunteer, teaching high school students English. She was an avid reader, enjoyed knitting, gardening and growing roses. She was a member of the Review Club and the Amanda Arnold Retired Teachers group.
She was preceded in death by her husband and parents.
Survivors include her son Matthew H. Schindler, Manhattan; three daughters, Mrs. Mike Summers (Jill), Olathe, Mrs. Raymond Kramer (Marta), Grosselle, Mich., and Libby St. Clair Schindler, Washington, D.C.; a sister. Ann Davis; seven grandchildren, Raymond Kramer III, Claire Kempf, Ben Summers, Nick Summers, Nicole Rush, Michael Schindler and Amelia Schindler; three great-granddaughters; and one great-grandson expected in October.
Memorial services were held Saturday at the Yorgensen-Meloan-Londeen Funeral Chapel, Manhattan. Inurnment will be at a later date in the Wallace cemetery near Jewell.

Roger Bailey
Roger Stuart Bailey,46, the son of Richard and Elizabeth (Nunes) Bailey, was born on April 14, 1965, at Anaheim, Calif. He died Thursday at his home in Superior,
He was united in marriage to Deanna Crane on Aug. 5, 1989, in Webber. Together they raised two boys, Alex and James.
He enjoyed training cockatiels and parrots, working on electronics and computers. He was musically talented and listened to the 60s and 70s music. As a youngster he traveled a lot. He liked to collect musical instruments as a hobby.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents.
He is survived by his wife, Deanna, of the home; two sons, Alex and James, both of Superior; his parents, Richard Bailey of Germany and Elizabeth Nunes of Mountain Home, Ark.; his grandmother, Helen Bailey of Portland, Ore.; and two sisters Rachelle Bailey of San Diego, Calif., and Nikki Smith of Mountain Home, Ark.
His funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Megrue-Price Funeral Home Chapel in Superior. Pastors Jim Stark and Mark Diehl will officiate. Visitation will be today and Friday.
Burial will be at a later date at Webber.

Arlen Ritterling
Arlen Ludwig Ritterling, 75, was born to William and Christina Ritterling on Oct 3, 1936, near Byron.
He attended St John's Lutheran Church. He attended Lone Star School. He was a lifetime farmer. He assisted Irma Mar-quart wall papering his home and he worked closely with his father, William, on the farm. He made many home repairs, helped with gardening and took care of the chickens.
He enjoyed sports and played basketball with Kevin Fuller. He enjoyed roller and ice skating and could out-skate many of those around him. He enjoyed drives in the country and bowling with family.
His favorite time of year was harvesting as he assisted his brother-in-law, Gary Fuller, and nephews, Wesley and Kevin.
His funeral was Wednesday at St. Peters Lutheran Church with the Rev. Daryl Nelson officiating. Pallbearers were Delmar Marquart, Dennis Gebers, Doug Corman, Lyle Ritterling, Randy Ritterling, Gary Hofeldt, Wesley Fuller and Kevin Fuller. Interment was in the St. John Lutheran cemetery at Byron. Price Funeral Home of Hebron was in charge of arrangements.

Phyllis Hand
Phyllis Marie (Sergeant) Hand, 86, was born Dec 14, 1924, to Morris Dean Sergeant and Etta (Kriebel) Sergeant in Hastings. She died Thursday in Lincoln, Neb.
Phyllis attended Juniata High School and Hastings College and became a school teacher. On Sept 4, 1948, she married Maurice Henry Hand in Lincoln. They lived in Edgar. She also worked at the Edgar Lumber Company and managed Edgar's Leisure Village. Upon retiring from Leisure Village, she moved to Lincoln.
Phyllis enjoyed playing cards and dominoes with family and friends as well as doing counted cross-stitch and embroidering tea towels for friends and family. She was an active member of P.E.O. and Order of the Eastern Star.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Maurice Henry Hand; her siblings, Eleanor Wiltrout, Howard Dale Sergeant and Maurice Dean Sergeant; and her parents.
She is survived by her sister, Mrs. Marvin Boyle (Clarys), Payson, Ariz.; her son, Maurice Gene Hand, Lincoln; her daughter, Mrs. Dave Eigenberg (Rhonda), Leesburg, Ga.; her grandchildren, Greg Hand, Kama Bedient, Kirk Eigenberg and Kali Eigenberg; her great-grandchildren, Kaiden Bedient,Taylor Hand, Blayke Bedient, Hanna Bedient and Avery Hand.
Her funeral was Monday at the Church of the Plains in Edgar. The Rev. Stephen Price Gibson officiated. Inurnment was in the Juniata cemetery. Williams Funeral Home of Edgar was in charge of arrangements.

Marie Bossemeyer
Marie Evelyn (Novak) Bossemeyer, 89, was born in McCool Junction on July 27, 1922, to Edward and Frances Novak. She died Friday at her home in Lincoln, Neb.
She attended grade school and graduated from McCool Junction High School in 1940. She attended York College and taught in the York County rural schools for three years. She was a secretary at Fairmont AAF, Geneva, working in the special services office in base headquarters from 1943 to Nov 1945, then attending Lincoln School of Commerce to further her business education. Following graduation from there, in 1946, she worked at the York State Bank as the secretary to president, Dean Sack, for the next four years.
She was united in marriage to Alan Bossemeyer on Oct 15, 1950 in York, and then moved to her new home in Superior, where their two children were born, Linda Ann and Frank E. They resided in Superior until 1965 and then purchased the Blue Valley Drive Inn at Crete, where she worked with her husband, as manager, bookkeeper, soda jerk and errand girl, as well as working in her home.
In Superior, she worked in the American Legion Auxiliary and became a 50-year member in 2001. After moving to Crete, she also worked as a volunteer at the Lincoln VA Medical Center. She was a 50-year member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Olive Chapter 63 at Superior and served as the worthy matron in 1963. She was also the recorder for the Social Order of Beauceant in 1954 at Superior and served as a Brownie Girl Scout leader, Cub Scout den mother and taught Sunday school at the Superior First United Methodist Church. She and her husband also helped in supervising the Methodist Youth Group.
After joining the Avion Travelcade Club in 1987, she served as secretary-treasurer of the Nebraska unit for two terms and was a member of St. Luke's United Methodist Church in Lincoln since 1998. She and her husband celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on Oct 15, 2000.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and three brothers, Fred, Edmund and William Novak.
She is survived by her husband, Alan, Lincoln; a daughter, Mrs. Bill Surline (Linda); a son, Frank E. Bossemeyer; a brother, Layton Novak, Sioux Falls, S.D.; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Graveside services will be held at the Evergreen cemetery in Superior at a later date. Williams Funeral Home of Superior is in charge or arrangements.

Frances Logback
Mary Frances Boyd Logback, 72, was born on Jan. 19, 1940 in Topeka. She was the daughter of F. W. "Bus" and Mary (Dexter) Boyd of Mankato. She died Friday, at the Hays Medical Center. Fran attended schools in Mankato, graduating with the Mankato High School Class of 1958.
She entered Ka-nsas State University seeking a degree in clothing and retailing from the school of home economics and was recognized by several home economics honoraries. She was a member of Pi Beta Phi social sorority and was active in the student government association. She was also a member of mortar board at Kansas State.
She graduated from K-State in early June, 1962. On June 15, 1962, she married Jim Logback of Clay Center, Kan., who she had met at KSU. Later that month, she accompanied him to Newport, R.I., where he entered the U.S. Navy's officer candidate school.
They later lived in Athens, Ga., where Jim was enrolled at the U.S. Navy's supply corps school, and then in San Diego, where he was stationed aboard the USS Jason (AR-8). It was there their first son, Frank, was born.
Their daughter, Lydia, was born in Clay Center, where Fran was visiting while Jim was overseas. The family moved to Hill City on Nov. 1, 1965, when Jim became associated with Fran's older brother, Bob Boyd, in the operation of The Hill City Times. Their second son, Steve, was born in Hill City.
Fran liked working in several Hill City dress shops and clothing stores. She worked with Kay Money in decorating the display windows of the UMC Second Chances thrift store in downtown Hill City.
She was a member of the United Methodist Church of Hill City and its Lydia Circle. She was also a member of the Helios Club of Hill City and had served as the Citizenship Chairman of Kansas' Sixth District of the General Federation of Women's Clubs. She served on the board of the Graham County Arts Council, and was a member of Chapter CN of PEO.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Bus and Mary Boyd.
She is survived by her husband, Jim, of the home in Hill City; son, Frank Logback of Lenexa; daughter, Mrs. Bryan Graham (Lydia) of Westborough, Mass.; son, Steve Logback of Manhattan, Kan.; seven grandchildren;two brothers, Bob Boyd of Hill City, and Dick Boyd of Norton; and a sister, Mrs. Wynne James (Elizabeth) of Bethesda, Md.
Her funeral will be at 11 a.m. on Saturday, at the Hill City United Methodist Church with the Rev. Mark Anderson officiating. Burial will be in the Memorial Lawn cemetery, Hill City. Stinemetz Funeral Home, Hill City, is in charge of arrangements.
