June learned to milk cows at the age of four years. She herded cows and turkeys along with other chores both outside and inside. One chore was cooking meals for the family during busy times. When she baked cookies, she always made a double batch or there wouldn't be any left after baking because the boys would eat them all as they came out of the oven. Her love of cooking, sewing and outside activities were developed during these years as a youngster.

The couple farmed northeast of Jewell until moving to Jewell in 1997. June had a love of gardening and growing flowers. During the summer, you would find her canning the produce from her garden. Baking and cooking were also talents she shared with her family and others. June was the cook at the Jewell High School from 1964 to 1989 and worked 20 years at the Jewell Tastee Freez. For 14 years she managed the 4-H food stand at the Jewell County Fair. June's other passion was sewing and quilting. She was never found sitting doing nothing as there was always a sewing project in the works.
For 14 years, June shared her talents as a 4-H project leader and community leader for the Buffalo Valley 4-H Club. Her interest in 4-H continued even after her youngsters were grown and out of the organization. She served the Jewell County 4-H Alumni for many years as treasurer. In the fall of 1999, she was honored with the Jewell County Alumni Award. June was an active member of the Jewell American Legion Auxiliary serving as president and many years a secretary-treasurer. The family belonged to the Jewell EUB Church which later became the Salem United Methodist Church. June served many years as a Sunday School teacher, officer and many other council positions.
