Darlene Kopsa
Darlene Culver (Gaston) Kopsa, 76, died Saturday, surrounded by her family at the Republic County Hospital in Belleville. Darlene was born in Mankato to Ralph Arthur Gaston and Ethel Phillipson June 15, 1938. She attended school at Cuba and graduated with the Class of 1956. Darlene married her lifelong companion, Melroy Kopsa, on July 29, 1956.
Rarely one for the spotlight, Darlene was happiest when her children and grandchildren found success. Even though she said she didn't like to cook, many memories were made in the kitchen around the stove and dining room table. Darlene's baking skills found her taking requests from future brides for their wedding cakes. She took advantage of her sewing room with a talent for designing clothes for all occasions. She created quilts for every grandchild on their high school graduation. She also had a love for reading and enjoyed getting lost in stories, devouring books in an afternoon break. Other hobbies included playing the piano and organ and compiling information for the family tree. Melroy and Darlene liked to travel with trips to Texas always high on the list and an occasional dash to the casino on a Sunday afternoon.
Survivors include her husband, Melroy, of the home; daughters Mrs. Steve Zenger (Micki), Haddam; Mrs. Bryan Lahodny (Calise), Montgomery, Texas; sons Lance of Cuba and Cory of Superior; eight grandchildren; Josh, Jared and Jordan Zenger, Zachary, Tabayia and Tyler Kopsa, Justin and Ashley Lahodny; four great-grandchildren; a step-brother Harold Walker; step sisters, Helen Bausch, Rosemary Bergeron, Joann Martin and Patricia Erickson.
She was preceded in death by her parents; step father,Christopher Walker; infant brother, Orthel; half-brother, O.M. Gaston; step-sisters, Marilyn Walker and Kathleen Schumaker; and step-brother, Michael Walker.
Her funeral will be held 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Cuba Presbyterian Church with Pastor Phil Goombi officiating. Burial will be in the National Bohemian cemetery #13, rural Cuba. Viewing will be1 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday with family greeting everyone from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tibbetts-Fischer Funeral Home, Belleville, is in charge of arrangements.

Virginia Johnson
Virginia Lea Johnson, 91, of Grand Island, formerly of Central City, died at Golden Living Lakeview in Grand Island Thursday. She was born Dec. 23, 1923, in Burr Oak to Oscar E. and Maude E. (Morris) Liedloff. She graduated from Burr Oak High School in 1941. Virginia married her high school sweetheart, Roy Stanley "Stan" Johnson on June 5, 1943, in Burr Oak. She worked as a telephone operator and mail clerk in Burr Oak. Following Stan's service in the U.S. Army Air Corps, they made their home in Burr Oak where Stan worked for the United States Post Office. Stan was transferred to the Central City Post Office in 1975 and they made their home there until their health forced them to move to Grand Island. Roy died on Dec. 16, 2010.
Virginia joined the United Methodist Church in Burr Oak in 1947 and transferred her membership to the United Methodist Church in Central City in 1975. Stan and Virginia worked together in making rocking horses that they gave to hundreds of children in the Central City area.
Survivors include her children and their families: Bonnie J. Dakan of Wichita; Kathy J. and James Coffin of Las Vegas, Nev.; Julie and Robert Stahla of Grand Island, and Roy Lee and Sandra Johnson of Littleton, Colo.; six grandchildren: Ginger L. Coffin of Houston, Texas; Kristy and Roger Ranta of Walker, Mich.; Jeremy Stahla and Bradley Stahla both of Grand Island; Roy Michael Johnson of Wichita; Candace J. Johnson of Dubuque, Iowa; three great-grandchildren, Garret, Cameron and Jimmy Ranta; nephew, Michael Murray and family of Topeka; nieces - Linda G. Kelly of Pleasanton, Calif., and Pamela Perkins of Arkansas City, Kan.; and a host of friends.
Preceding her in death were her husband, Stan; her parents; brother, Howard Lucas; and sister, Ruby Brown.
Memorial service will be tomorrow (Friday) at 11 a.m. at the chapel of Solt Funeral Home in Central City with Deacon Don Placke officiating. There will also be a memorial service at the Burr Oak United Methodist Church at 11 a.m. Saturday, with interment at the Burr Oak cemetery in Burr Oak.

Raymond Holl
Raymond Orville "Gus" Holl, 84, son of Harry Henry Holl and Martha Maria Dorthea Wolting Holl, died Jan. 30. He was born Dec. 2, 1930, at the family farm near Shady Bend, Kan. The farm, known around the country as "Tater Mountain," was founded by Raymond's grandfather, John.
Raymond walked seven miles to grade school with his six brothers to Shady Bend School and went to church at Shady Bend Community Church as a youngster. He also attended the St. John's Lutheran Church in Lincoln, Kan., and graduated from Lincoln High School in 1948. During his high school years he played basketball and performed in a school play where he and his brother, Harold, received their nicknames, Gus and Zeke. His nickname stuck throughout the years.
After a short stint working for a surveying company, Raymond started working for the Gas Service Company at the age of 20 and worked for natural gas companies for 42 years, retiring from KG&E in 1992. He began in the meter shop of the Gas Service Company repairing broken gas meters, dug ditches, and learned how to be a serviceman. He worked in Lincoln, Mitchell, and Jewell counties, talking with people and servicing the area's natural gas needs. He concluded his career as a field supervisor.
Raymond was united in marriage to Joyce Marie Hamilton on March 18, 1950. They celebrated their 64th anniversary shortly before Joyce's death in 2014. They had four children. He devoted many hours to his children ญญ fishing, camping, gardening, hunting mushrooms, doing home repairs, teaching them about gas lines and the natural gas business, leading worship, teaching Sunday school classes, encouraging young people, coaching and being a father, grandfather, great-grandfather and provider.
Raymond's passion for fishing was incomparable; many evenings and weekends were passed on the open waters of a local pond, just he and his fishing pole. His other passion was history. He liked to tell stories and show his grandchildren the route taken by his grandfather from Minneapolis to Lincoln County where he homesteaded.
Raymond was preceded in death by his wife; his parents; six brothers; eldest son, Leon; and grandson, Aaron.
He is survived by his daughter, Cheryl Hockman, Hutchison; son, Lawrence Holl, Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.; daughter, Elizabeth, Oak Creek, Colo.; grandchildren, Adam Holl, Tina Moore, Daniel Douglas, David Douglas, Nicole Kraus, Joshua Flaharty, Mataya Harrold, Amelia Miller; and seven great-grandchildren.
Services were held Feb. 4 at the First Christian Church, Beloit, with Pastor Cliff Heagy officiating. Casket Bearers were Adam Holl, Dalton Holl, Daniel Douglas, David Douglas, James Harrold, Joshua Flaharty, Nick Kraus and Tracey Moore. Interment was in Elmwood cemetery, Beloit. Arrangements were by McDonald-Roberts Funeral Service, Beloit.

Marlene Jorgensen
Marlene Jorgensen, 83, daughter of Cecil and Pauline (Langer) Harkins died Jan. 29 at the home of her daughter and son-in-law, Nita and Ken Jones, in Omaha. She was born Oct. 5, 1931, in Jewell County. She graduated from Superior High School in 1949. After graduating, she was employed by The Superior Express.
On Jan. 14, 1951, she was united in marriage to Holger Daniel (H.D.) Jorgensen at the United Methodist Church in Superior. Shortly after their wedding they moved to St. Louis, Mo., H.D. served a tour in Korea and Marlene moved back to Superior awaiting the arrival of twin girls, Nita and Nina, born Oct. 12, 1952. After H.D.'s tour in Korea, they moved to Gothenburg, where a son, Jerry, was born Feb. 19, 1955. They moved to Brule and then settled in Ogallala.
Marlene's favorite pastimes included going to garage sales and auctions seeking that special "treasure." She also enjoyed embroidery needlework, working in her flower garden and watching the birds and butterflies that visited her garden.
Marlene worked at Goodall Electric in Ogallala for almost 20 years, then at the Keith County Courthouse where she retired after 25 years with the county assessor's office. She also worked part-time for Hallmark Cards in two stores in Ogallala, retiring from that job after 30 years.
She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Ogallala for nearly 60 years.
Marlene was preceded in death by her parents, Cecil and Pauline Harkins; and her husband, H.D.
She is survived by her sister, Avis Shaw, of Superior; daughters, Mrs. Ken Jones (Nita) of Omaha and Nina Jorgensen of Ogallala; son, Jerry Jorgensen of North Platte; nine grandchildren, Tami Hemmelgarn of Omaha, Kendra Jones of Omaha, Hamilton Jones of Omaha, Danessa Hemmer of Omaha, Dani Jorgensen of Sutherland, Jay Jones of North Platte, Zach Jorgensen of North Platte, Jered Jorgensen of North Platte and Ellie Miller of Kearney; 16 great-grandchildren; a niece, Stephanie Gates; a great-niece; a nephew; many cousins, friends and extended family.
Services were held at 11 a.m. Monday at the First United Methodist Church in Superior with The Rev. Dr. Jocelyn Tupper officiating. Pallbearers were Hamilton Jones, Jay Jones, Zach Jorgensen, Jered Jorgensen, Matt Hemmelgarn, Nick Spath, Ernie Hemmer and Jason Miller. Interment was in Evergreen cemetery in Superior. Megrue-Price Funeral Home of Superior was in charge of the arrangements.

Nellie Littrell
Nellie Irene Littrell, 87, the daughter of William and Nora (Kramer) Janssen, was born Feb. 25, 1928, near Mt. Clare. She died Thursday at the Brodstone Memorial Hospital at Superior.
As a young girl the family moved to Gentry, Mo., where she lived most of her childhood years, returning to Nelson for her senior year of high school. She attended Kearney State Teachers College.
Nellie was married to Robert Littrell on Dec. 31, 1950, in Concor-dia. This union was blessed with two children, Jon and Gail. Nellie and Bob lived most of their lives in Nelson, where Bob was owner and operator of Littrell's Inc., a petroleum transportation company. She worked for South Central Public Power District and as a school secretary.
She was a member of the Nelson Community United Church of Christ, PEO, the American Legion Auxiliary, UWF, Eastern Star, library board, Red Hats and a Girl Scout and Cub Scout leader. She enjoyed horses, camping, golfing, Nebraska football, doing needle work, sewing, traveling and working in her garden.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Robert on June 24, 1994; her brother, Dale Janssen, and two sisters, Ruth Wehrman and Lorene Adamson.
Survivors include her son, Jon Littrell of Roca; and daughter, Gail Littrell of Lincoln, Neb.; and three granddaughters, Casey, Caitlin and Tara Littrell, all of Lincoln, Neb,
Her funeral will be he at 2 p.m. Sunday from the Nelson Community United Church of Christ with the Rev. Dr. Stephen Berry officiating.
Honorary pallbearers will be Casey Littrell, Caitlin Littrell, Tara Littrell, Dick Wehrman and Joe Adamson. A private family inurnment will be in the Nelson cemetery.
Klawitter-Price Funeral Home of Nelson is in charge of the arrangements.

Dean Sholtz
Darold "Dean" Sholtz, 85, of Guide Rock, died last Wednesday at the Mary Lanning Hospital, Hastings. His funeral was Saturday at the United Methodist Church in Guide Rock with the Rev. Warren Schoming officiating.
The son of Clarence and Edna (Hummel) Sholtz, he was born Aug. 22, 1929, in Webster County.
After serving in the U.S. Navy, Dean settled down to live a hardworking farm life southeast of Guide Rock. He enjoyed coyote hunting, fishing and watching sporting events involving his children, and later his grandchildren. In the last few years, he treasured taking annual wildlife watching trips to Yellowstone with his family. Dean was fiercely proud of his family and delighted in having everyone gathered at the farm. He enjoyed life on the farm and found fulfillment in the everyday tasks needed to make the farm successful. He was often heard whistling or singing as he went about his day.
Dean's parents, his wife, Gwen, and daughter, Lynette, preceded him in death. Survivors include his children, Mrs. Ken Nollete (Kathy) of Juniata, Rick Sholtz of Concordia, Mark Sholtz of Guide Rock, Brad Sholtz of Abilene, Scott Sholtz of Hampton, Mrs. Alan Shadduck (Leanne) of Hastings, (Mrs. Shawn Ayer (Renee) of Ashby, Neb.; 23 grandchildren, Kimberly, Candice, Shannon, Luke, Crystal, Erin, Jessica, Brittanie, Kendra, Joshua, Samantha, Riley, Alec, Kayla, Shea, Rhett, Olivia, Megan, Payden, Sierra, Paul, Jax, Cameron; 12 great-grandchildren, Alexis, Lane, Brooke, Bryson, Kara, Davony, Josiah, Jace, Landon, Amelia, Maya, Juliet; and a number of nieces, nephews and cousins.
Williams Funeral Home was in charge of funeral arrangements.

Raymond Griffith
Raymond Carl Griffith, 87, the son of Hazel (Truitt) and Charles Griffith, was born June 14, 1927, at Superior. He died Friday at the Smith County Hospital.
A lifelong resident of the Esbon community, Raymond received his education attending the Esbon schools, graduating with the Class of 1945. A veteran of World War II, he served his country with the United States Navy enlisting on June 1, 1945 and was discharged at war's end on Aug. 13, 1946. Raymond returned to Esbon where he was united in marriage with Mary Lou Smith on Feb. 1, 1947, at the courthouse in Smith Center. They continued to make Esbon their home where they were blessed with three children, Elaine, Ray and Janet. Raymond was employed at the filling station and later at the Esbon Lumber Yard. He then began his life's work in the trucking business. He owned and operated Griffith's Transport for 50 years, retiring in 1997.
Raymond took an active interest and dedicated his time to a number of community organizations and projects. He was a member of the United Methodist Church, the Lions Club and the American Legion. He possessed a focused work ethic and was committed to his customers through the years. He treasured his time working on the farm, pursuing carpentry work and visiting with his friends and neighbors. In 1997, he and Mary Lou enjoyed an Alaskan cruise for their 50th wedding anniversary.
Preceding him in death were his parents; a grandson, Dennis Love; and a granddaughter, Julie Love.
Survivors include his loving wife of 68 years, Mary Lou; daughters, Mrs. George Love (Elaine) of Cheyenne, Wyo., and Janet Griffith of Smith Center; a son, Ray Griffith of McPherson; grandchildren, Stephen Love, Mrs. Tim Deines (Tabatha), Scott Love and Gabe Griffith; step-grandchildren Katrisha Koehn and Tiffany Wedel; and 10 great-grandchildren, Jordan Wilson, Storm Lyn Love, Sara Love, Austin Live, Nolan Love, James Love, Morgan Love, Stephen Love Jr., Katelyn Deines and Tyler Dingman.
A graveside service was held Tuesday at the Esbon cemetery with Rodney Rose officiating. The Esbon Amercian Legion Post presented military honors. The Williams Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Ward Ohmstede
Ward Ohmstede, 96, the son of Maggie (Ward) and Chris Ohmstede, was born Jan. 5, 1919, at his grandparents' home south of Guide Rock. Ward was the eldest of eight children. He died Saturday at the Heritage Care Center in Red Cloud.
A lifelong resident of the Guide Rock community, Ward graduated from the Guide Rock High School with the Class of 1936. He was united in marriage with Verna M. Lewis on June 4, 1942, at Raton, N.M. This union was blessed with a daughter, Jacque. They made their home on the farm south of Guide Rock where he farmed and raised cattle. Ward's life was dedicated to the farm and his family. He was also a master with his earth moving equipment. In 1985, Ward teamed with Harry Obitz and built the Red Cloud Golf Course. A strong bond of friendship developed with the two men and they each enjoyed the time they spent creating the new course. For a dozen years Ward volunteered his time with the PGA's Bob Hope Tournament in Palm Springs, Calif. Both he and Verna enjoyed their trips to the desert. Every July the Ohmstede family held an annual golf event (the Maggie Open) in honor of their mother.
Ward was a member of the Guide Rock United Methodist Church, the Guide Rock Masonic Lodge and was a 60 year member of the Tehama Shrine and foot patrol. Because of failing health, Ward moved to the Heritage Care Center in 2013.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Verna, on Dec. 29, 2013; and two brothers, Lewis and Don Ohmstede.
Survivors include his daughter, Mrs. Jim Shipman (Jacque) of Guide Rock; grandchildren: Mrs. Trever Kudrna (Leslie) of Spokane, Wash,; Dan Shipman of Guide Rock and Brian Shipman of Superior; great-grandchildren, Austin, Casey, Alyssa, Alaina, Karissa, Justin, Jocelyn, Julia and Jake; a great-great-granddaughter, Rylan; brothers Roger and Daryl Ohmstede; sisters, Eloise Durrant, Mrs. Bud Fisher (Snick) and Ike Davenport.
His funeral was held Wednesday at the United Methodist Church in Guide Rock with the Rev. Warren Schoming officiating. Interment was in the Guide Rock cemetery.

Glen Frerichs
Glen Leroy Frerichs, 86, was born Jan. 3, 1929, at Bostwick, the second son of Johannes Hinrich (Hans) and Anna Marie (Frederiksen) Frerichs. He died Sunday at his rural Nuckolls County home.,
Glen grew up in the Bostwick and Nelson communities and graduated as valedictorian of the Class of 1946 from Nelson High School. Glen ser-ved with the United States Army during the Korean War from 1951 to 1953 with the 630th Engineer Light Equipment (ELE), 19th combat group, 8th Army; as a master sergeant.
Glen was united in marriage to Beulah Parsons on April 12, 1953, at Methodist Church at Superior. This union was blessed with the birth of four daughters. Beulah died on May 2, 1992. Glen was married to Dorothy Beck Jensby on Nov. 27, 1993, at United Methodist Church, in Superior, Dorothy died on Oct. 30, 2007.
Glen had been a lifelong farmer in Nuckolls County, a 60-year member of United Methodist Church, the Danish Brotherhood, the VFW, and the American Legion. He participated in an Honor Flight to Washington, D.C. in March, 2014. Glen served on Nelson School Board.
He was preceded in death by his wives, Beulah and Dorothy; his parents; infant sister, Margaret; infant daughter, Norma; and great-grandson Isaak Rivera.
Survivors include his children, Mrs. Neal Hinz (Glenda), Lincoln, Neb.; Joyce Rivera, Omaha; Mrs. Marty Williams (Carol), Liberty, Mo.; a special friend, Joline Allington, Superior; stepchildren Mrs. Roger Druba (Carolyn) Falls City; Morris Jensby, Salt Lake City, Utah; Kent Jensby, Superior; Mrs. Ken Greenstreet (Beth), Fountain Hills, Ariz., Mrs. Mitch Linder (Lori), Aurora, Colo.; and brothers, Alan Frerichs, Vacaville, Calif., Gene Frerichs, Superior, Bob Frerichs, Lincoln, Neb.
His funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at the United Methodist Church in Superior. The Rev. Jocelyn Tupper will officiate. Burial with military honors will be in the Evergreen cemetery, Superior. Visitation was held d from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Wednesday with the family present to greet friends from 4 to 6 pm at the funeral home.
Williams Funeral Home of Superior is in charge of the arrangements.
