Betty Drohman
Betty L. Drohman, 92, Lincoln, formerly of Deshler, died Thursday at Southlake Village in Lincoln. The daughter of Walter L. and Elsie (Green) Jacobson, she was born Dec. 12, 1922, in Albion.
She attended school in Ogallala and graduated from Ogallala High School. She took normal training to teach in country schools. She met her husband, Vivan, in Ogallala, where he was working on the Lake McConaughy dam. The couple married on Nov. 29, 1941, in Ogallala. This union was blessed with the birth of two children.
Vivan was drafted into the United States Army during WWII. He and Betty went to Texas and upon his deployment she returned to Deshler, where she taught in area country schools. While teaching, she continued her education and received her bachelor's degree in teaching in the 1950s. She then taught in the Deshler Public School system for more than 30 years. In 1967, she received her master's degree from the University of Nebraska. Betty loved children and devoted her entire life to teaching young children. She especially liked the 4th graders.
Betty and Vivan lived on the family farm before they moved into Deshler, where she helped her husband with the farm chores. Her favorites were the horses, but also enjoyed cross stitch, reading and playing bridge.
She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Deshler until moving to Lincoln to be close to her daughter after retiring.
She was preceded in death by her parents; one son, William; a brother, Walter Jacobson; three sisters, Helen Tuman, Diana Toops and Carol Jacobson.
She is survived by her daughter, Mrs. Rick Harley (Patricia), Lincoln; three grandchildren, Michele Wheeler of Firth, Scott Harley of Oceanside, Calif., and Stephanie Eells of Lincoln; nieces, nephews and friends.
Her funeral was held Tuesday at the First Presbyterian Church in Hebron with Pastor Connie Stone officiating. Kroll Funeral Home, Deshler, was in charge of arrangements.

James Walters
James Russell Lee Walters, 66, died Saturday at the family home in Hebron. He was born in Lebanon, Mo., on July 17, 1949, to Barney Leroy Walters and Virginia Johnson Walters. He was the second of nine children.
He grew up in the Ozark hills, a rough and tumble little hillbilly boy, who did his part to give his mother the gray hair she has today. When just a little tyke, he grabbed onto some clothes going into the electric wringer washing machine and it pulled him into the ringer, grinding away until his Dad hit the ringer with such force that it broke. He carried a scar under his arm for the rest of his life.
When five years old, he contracted polio. This time it was his mother who massaged his legs for hours every night when they were hurting. As a result, he regained his ability to walk.
Then there was the time while playing good guy-bad guy and he was the bad guy who was going to be hung at sundown. He jumped off the bucket and the little rope around his neck tightened, leaving him kicking in the air. Fortunately, once again, his father was close enough to cut him down and give him a chance to grow up a bit more.
While playing hide and seek, he knew the other children were hiding in the chicken house so he quietly climbed up on the roof, stuck his head through a hole in the roof, and scared the hiders below only to find his ears prevented his head from coming back out. His dad had to make the hole bigger so he could escape. He probably wouldn't have survived life without his dad.
Jim married Judy Applegarth on Aug. 1, 1970. They had four children: Joy, Jamie, Jonathan and Jennifer. His children were his treasures. No one could date his daughters without first facing Daddy. Only the ones who survived his hillbilly shotgun intimidation made it into his daughters' lives. Then he took them into his big heart and loved them like sons.
He worked at Potlatch Lumber Mill for several years before returning to school. He graduated from Christ for the Nations Institute in Dallas, Texas, in 1979 and served as pastor of Faith Christian Center from 1991 to 1999, before moving to St. Ignace, Mich., where he ministered until retiring in 2007.
He ran his own construction business for nearly 30 years, quietly praying for the people he worked for. He saw marriages restored and lives changed. When he and Judy moved to Hebron, he was hired at Thayer County Health Services to work in maintenance. Whether the staff there realized it or not, Jim took them into his heart as family ญญ just as he did the entire town. He loved people whether they knew it or not or whether they liked him or not. He was known for turning any enemies into his personal friends.
He liked to hunt and tried to instill that in his children. He patiently taught his active son, Jonathan, to sit so still that a turkey walked up and looked the boy in the eye before wandering off. Then he patiently taught him how to shoot turkeys that came that close. He also taught his girls how to hunt, and Jamie and Jennifer have both been known to put meat on the table. He passed on his carpentry skills to his oldest daughter, Joy, who makes furniture pieces. The last piece they worked on together was a manicure table for his youngest daughter, Jennifer.
Jim was preceded in death by his father, Barney Walters.
He is survived by his wife, Judy, their four children, Joy, Jamie, Jonathan and Jennifer, as well as 12 grandchildren, his mother, Virginia Walters, five brothers and three sisters.
His funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the First Community Church in Hebron. Officiants will be pastors Steve Speichinger and Brett Mackey. There will be no visitation. Inurnment will be at Monarch cemetery, Brownsville, Mo. Kroll Funeral Home, Hebron, is in charge of arrangements.
