Verla Snyder
Verla Snyder, 99, a homemaker and retired teacher, died Friday, Nov. 20, 2015. She was born April 18, 1916, on the family farm south of Ohiowa, Neb., to Otha and Florence Wood. She was one of four children.
She attended what is now Nebraska Wesleyan and received a teaching certificate. She taught in Valparaiso and finally at Oak. She married Vernon J. Snyder on Aug. 6, 1941. Married almost 62 years, they were blessed with three daughters and a son.
During her life she enjoyed attending church and Bible study, her garden, reading and garage sales.
Verla was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Vernon; brother, Walter Wood; sister, Beth Kemper; son-in-law, Melvin Gillette; great-grandchildren, Ryker Gillette and Audrey Hoesel.
Survivors include her sister, Dorothy Jean Meyer; a son, Lee and his wife, Margaret; daughters, Vesta, Sharon (Bob) and Belva; grandchildren, Daniel, Dawn, Janine, Andy, David, Philip, Michael, Daniel, Trevor and Katelyn; and great-grandchildren, Suzanna, Janae, Alyssa, Aidan, Kaitlyn, Jeremiah, Elijah, Austin, Savannah, Olivia, Skye, Emily and Sarah.
Her funeral was held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 1, 2015, at First Community Church, Oak, with Pastor Keith Brich officiating.
Music was provided by Andy Snyder and Tom Jensen. Selections were "In The Garden," "Heroes Of The Faith" and "We Will Remember."
Pallbearers were David Sears, Philip Sears, Trevor Snyder, Andy Snyder, Daniel Snyder and Michael Sears. Honorary pallbearers were Daniel Gillette, Janine Gillette, Dawn Gillette, Katelyn Snyder and Jerry Littrel.
Interment was in the Oak Grove cemetery, Oak, Neb.
A memorial has been established with the First Community Church at 412 Ash Street, Oak, Neb. 68964.

Sandra Adams
Sandra "Sue" Adams, 75, Warren, Ore., died Oct. 26 in St. Helens, Ore. She was born Feb. 19, 1940, in Montrose, the daughter of Leland and Ivalee Huffman.
Sue was a dedicated wife and loving and caring mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and great-great-grandmother. She was a longtime resident of Warren, Ore., and devoted all her time to her family and countless hours working in her flower gardens. Her life was filled with joy by hosting family gatherings for the holidays.
Alzheimer's may have ended her blessed life but it never stole her spirit.
Survivors are: Floyd Adams, husband of 59 years, children, Al Adams, Brent Adams, Craig Adams, Kim Steele, Dave Adams, and Brenda Evans, 15 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren, three great-great-grandchildren; and a sister, Nancy White.
Her funeral was held on Nov. 4 at Columbia Funeral Home in St. Helens, Ore., with Pastor Janie Freeman officiating. A graveside service for close family and friends was held at Columbia Memorial Gardens, Scappose, Ore. Columbia Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Laura Rivers
Laura Rivers, born Jan. 20, 1934, died Nov. 24, 2015 at the age of 81 in Mt. Joseph Senior Village, Concordia, Kan. Her home was in Jewell, Kan., since the late 70s.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Donald L. "Mickey" Rivers, August 2003, and her only daughter, Cindy Fish, in 2014. She has a granddaughter, Andrea Garcia, and grandchildren in Concordia. She raised Pekingese "babies" and would not allow them to be called D-O-G-S.
As desired, she was cremated and will be buried privately. A memorial service will be held Dec. 8, 9:30 a.m., Tuesday, at Mt. Joseph Senior Village in Concordia. Kleppinger Funeral Home handled arrangements.

Kathlene Berkey
Kathlene Ann McIntosh, 84, died at Parkview Haven in Deshler. The daughter of Thomas and Angie McIntosh, she was born Dec. 4, 1931, on a farm in Custer County, north of Weissert.
As a fourth grader, her family moved to a farm near Westerville, and in 1944 they moved to Sargent. She graduated from Sargent High School in 1949. She worked for the local telephone company. In 1950, Duane Berkey came to teach at Sargent High School. They were married in May of 1951 and were blessed with four sons: Bill, Tom, Dallas and Cleve.
Duane took a teaching job near Denver, Colo., and the family moved there. In 1965 he began working for State Farm Insurance and they moved to Lander, Wyo. After about six years, they moved backed to Denver and lived there until he retired in 1994. They moved to Davenport, where she made her home until moving into Parkview Haven.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Duane, in 2009; her sons, Bill, Tom and Dallas; and a brother, Norman. Survivors include her son, Cleve, and wife, Dee Berkey of Davenport; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; a brother, Tom McIntosh, Fredrick, Colo.; several nieces and nephews.
Her funeral was held Monday at Christ Lutheran Church, Davenport, with Pastor Kristen VanStee officiating. Burial was in the Davenport cemetery.

Rev. Donald Olson
Pastor Don Olson was born in Elmira, N.Y., on July 27, 1935, to Pastor Bror and Anna (Mattson) Olson. His father was the pastor of Bethany Lutheran Church in Elmira. Pastor Olson died Sunday, Nov 22, 2015, at Brook-stone Meadows in Elkhorn, Neb.
Pastor Olson graduated from SSH in Elmira, N.Y.; Uppsala College in East Orange, N.J., and Augustana Seminary in Rock Island, Ill.
Ordained to the ministry of Word and Sacrament in 1963, he was called to serve Salem Lutheran Church in Williamsport, Pa. He then answered the call to do mission work and went to Guyana, South America, for three years, where he was the equivalent of a circuit rider pastor.
From Guyana he came back to Pennsylvania and served a four point parish in and around Liberty, Pa. He then served as assistant to the bishop. From there he served in Gettysburg, Pa., and as an interim pastor in Newark, Del. Next he went to a three point parish in Leeds, N.D., and it became a six point parish. He served as interim assistant to The Rev. Paul Kennedy, at Trinity, Worcester, and interim in Plymouth, both in Massachusetts.
He served in Geneva, Neb., after which he had open heart surgery and retired. This was followed by an interim at First Lutheran, North Platte, Neb., and then to Philadelphia where he served in Wissinoming, where he did the ground work for a merger with Tacony. He was united in marriage to his wife, Margaret, at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Elkins, W.Va., on May 1, 1988.
From Philadelphia, the Pastors Olson went back to Nebraska where Pastor Don served more interims at Wayne, Pilgar and Stanton, and covered during Pastor Margaret's bout with cancer.
In 2009, they moved to Omaha, Neb., and were called to serve an interim and in August of 2010 moved to Superior, Neb., where they were serving Salem Lutheran at the time of his death.
He had a passion for church ministry. He was a great person and liked people which was evident when you met him. He was actively serving a parish in his 80th year, which tells a lot about his character. The highlight of his ministry was his presence at the March on Washington where he stood in the crowd around the reflecting pool between the Washington Monument and Lincoln Memorial. He heard Dr. Martin Luther King's "I have a dream" speech and forever after couldn't hear it without tears in his eyes. He mentored himself by a pastor to go to seminary; he in turn mentored more than a few people to go to seminary. The highlight of his life was his children and grandchildren. He praised both his daughters and their husbands for their ability to parent, and delighted in the achievements of all of his grandchildren. His wish was to live long enough to see them grown, married and settled. He dearly loved all of them.
He was preceded in death by his parents, infant daughter, Anita Faith, a sister in law, Judith Olson, and several aunts, uncles and cousins.
Pastor Olson is survived by his wife, Pastor Margaret Olson, brother, The Rev. Richard E. Olson of Edgar, Mass., son Bruce Olson (Susan) and children, Kevin and Nicholas of Vienna, Va., daughter, Rachel Howell (Robert) and children, Thomas and Allison of Cleveland, Ohio; and daughter, Sara Gravelle (Mark) and children, Eric and Joseph of Ponte Vedra, Fla., and a step-daughter, Shawn Lisa Achterhof. He is also survived by Cousin Ann Smith from Anchorage, Alaska.
Funeral service will be held on Friday, Dec. 4, 2015, at 1 p.m. from the Salem Lutheran Church in Superior, Neb., with The Revs. Megan Morrow and Dale Topp officiating.
Music will be provided by Sonia Schmidt as the organist and The Rev. Cathy Ammlung as soloist.
Visitation will be held today (Thursday), from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m.
Pallbearers will be Rachel Howell, Sara Gravelle, Thomas Howell, Dave Gebers, Steve Gebers, Jim Smith, Carl Mohler and Alfred Hanson. Honorary pallbearers will be Glen Mueller, Marlan Watson, Steve Troudt, Jim Jensen and the Salem council members.
Interment will be in the Salem Lutheran cemetery at Superior.
Memorials are suggested to go to Salem Lutheran Church for missions.

Roland A. Hoelting
Roland A. Hoelting, 88, Lawrence, Neb., died last Monday at the Good Samaritan Society's Superior center. He was born March 16, 1927, to Albert and Christina (Mazour) Hoelting in Lawrence.
He graduated from Lawrence High School in 1945. On Oct. 8, 1951, he was married to Marian A. Ostdiek at St. Stephen's Catholic Church, Lawrence. He was a lifetime resident of the Lawrence area, where he farmed and raised livestock. He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus.
Survivors include his wife, Marian, Lawrence; two sons, Paul Hoelting and Kurt Hoelting, Lawrence; an aunt, Betty Hoelting, Austin, Texas; four grandchildren, Kristen Pavelka, Kearney, Jason Hoelting, Nelson, Kayla Spirk and Kelsey Hoelting, Lincoln, Neb.; two great-grandchildren, Keeley and Colby Pavelka. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Lyle Hoelting.
Rosary and Mass were held at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Lawrence, with Father Thomas Bush officiating. Burial was in St. Stephen's Catholic cemetery, Lawrence. Merten-Butler Mortuary, Blue Hill, was in charge of the arrangements.

Leigh Davis
Leigh Kevin Davis, 58, died last Tuesday at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines, Iowa. The son of Lynn and Ellen (Rowbotham) Davis, he was born Aug. 11, 1957, in Lemmon, S.D. During his life, he lived in 42 different communities in various states, attending school in many of them. He graduated from Winona High School in Winona, Minn., in 1975. He earned a bachelor's degree in mass communications and photojournalism from Winona State University in 1983.
From 1986 to 1992 Leigh was in the Naval Reserve, then joined the Iowa Army National Guard. He was an army recruiter from 1994 to 1996. In 2000, he earned an associate's degree in nursing from Des Moines Area Community College. In 2004, he was deployed to Afghanistan during Operation Enduring Freedom 5, Task Force 168. He returned home in 2005 and retired in 2007. During his time in the service, he earned a Bronze Star, Army Commendation Medal, Navy Achievement Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal and Combat Infantry Badge.
He was blessed with two sons. On Valentine's Day, 1990, he was united in marriage with Deb Wirtz. They made their home in Carroll, Iowa. He began his nursing career at St. Anthony Hospital in Carroll and continued at Manning Regional Healthcare Center as a registered nurse and manager of the emergency room department.
In his spare time, he enjoyed photography, woodworking and home improvement projects. He also took pleasure in gardening, watching movies, reading and playing computer games. His favorite place to be was next to Deb. When his health began to fail after two brain surgeries, two strokes and being diagnosed with cancer, she became his full time care giver.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents. Survivors incluse his wife, Deb Davis of Carroll; two sons, Michael Davis of Bremerton, Wash., and Stephen Davis of Colorado Springs, Colo.; granddaughter, Taryn Davis; parents, Lynn and Ellen Davis of Lincoln, Neb.; brothers, Doug Davis of Prattville, Ala., and Mark Davis of Lincoln, Neb.; sister, Robin Stone of Lake City, Minn.; numerous nieces, nephews and friends.
Ohde Funeral Home in Manning, Iowa, was in charge of funeral arrangements.

Lola Noble
Lola Jane Bernice Noble, 93, died last Wednesday at the Good Samaritan Society's Superior center. The daughter of Robert and Bertha Mae (Bartholomew) Myers, she was born on Dec. 14, 1922.
She was married to Marlen Noble on Jan. 11, 1941, in Mankato. To this union was born four daughters: Marla, Joy, June and Lynda. Lola had a joy for baking and enjoyed playing cards. She had a big garden and did a lot of her own canning. In her spare time enjoyed putting puzzles together.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Marlen; a daughter, Joy Caylor; and three sisters, Lyda, Leola and Sylvia.
She is survived by her daughters, Marla Howe, Mrs. Ron Frasier (June) and Mrs. David Aksamit (Lynda), all of Superior; nine grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; nieces, nephews and friends.
Her funeral was held Saturday at Megrue-Price Funeral Home in Superior, with Pastor Mark Diehl officiating. Interment was in Evergreen cemetery, Superior. Megrue-Price Funeral Home, Superior, was in charge of the arrangements.

Billie Jean Larson
Billie Jean Larson, 91, a lifelong resident of Edgar, died Thursday in Lincoln, Neb. She was born Sept. 27, 1924, to Ralph and Fannie (Jeffs) Mileger in Edgar.
Billie Jean was a graduate of Edgar High School (Class of 1942) and the Lincoln School of Commerce. After a year of teaching country school, she traveled by train to Washington, D.C., to work in the War Department during World War II. There she met Carl Chester "Chet" Larson, also from Edgar and serving at the Pentagon in the Army Air Corps. They were married on May 2, 1945. Following the war, they returned to Edgar and raised two children, John Steven and Jill Elaine. Their first-born, Carl, Jr., died as an infant. As the children became older, Billie was hired by the City of Edgar as city clerk. She served the city for 27 years.
Some of the accomplishments she was most proud of were her supporting role in the decisions to build and operate Leisure Village and Rosebrook Care Center. Before computers, Billie devoted long hours to writing "light bills" and doing other administrative tasks by hand to keep the city operating. She made many good friends during this time. She was a lifelong member of the Edgar Christian Church. She served as church secretary-treasurer until her 90th birthday. She was known for her organizational skills and diligence in record-keeping. She was a member of PEO and a lifetime member of the American Legion Auxiliary.
Through the years, she was active in Girl Scouts (troop leader), Cub Scouts (den mother), PTA and bowling leagues. Her green thumb with flowers was well known. She and Chet grew peonies for sale on Memorial Day for several years. Of all her accomplishments, though, she was the most proud of her family. Many grandchildren and great-grandchildren blessed her later years. Although not always able to see them as often as she would like, she kept them close by covering the walls of her home with their pictures. She loved all children and was a wonderful aunt to many nephews and nieces living in the Edgar area.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Chet; son, Carl, Jr.; parents, Ralph and Fannie Mileger; sister, Patricia Swanson; brother, Ralph, Jr,; and grandson, Grant Larson. Survivors include her children, John Larson of Lincoln, Neb., and Mrs. Bob White (Jill) of Lee's Summit, Mo.; sister, Bobbie Shuck of Edgar; eight grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends.
Her funeral will be held at 2 p.m. tomorrow (Friday) at Williams Funeral Home Chapel in Edgar, with Pastor David King officiating. Burial will be in the Edgar cemetery. Williams Funeral Home of Edgar is in charge of the arrangements.
