Jerome Roh
Jerome M. Roh, 76, of Abie died Sunday, June 13, 2004, at Nebraska Health System Clarkson Hospital in Omaha.
Roh was born Nov. 1, 1927, in Abie. He attended Abie Public School. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1945-48. He helped coach many youth activities in the Abie area. He farmed and operated a dairy farm for more than 50 years in the Abie area. He farmed for many years with his brother, Leonard, then with his son, Pat, and nephew, Jerry.
He married Betty Shanahan on Aug. 9, 1952, in Plasi.
He was a member of Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus, Abie Volunteer Fire Department and Aquinas Booster Club.
Survivors include: his wife; a daughter, Jackie Roh of Greensboro, N.C.; three sons, Dan Roh (and wife, Carla Allenstein) of Kansas City, John (and wife, Angie) Roh of Columbus and Pat (and wife, Beth) Roh of Abie; three brothers, Vic Roh, Joe Roh and the Rev. Ray Roh; four sisters, Irma Drahota, Alice Clinkenbeard, Mildred Eagan and Margaret Meysenburg; and nine grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by three brothers and a sister.
The funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Abie with the Revs. Ray Roh, Bob Roh, Ronald Homes and James Cooper officiating. Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Thursday and one hour prior to service time, all at the church. A rosary will be said at 7 p.m. Thursday at the church. Burial will be in Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic cemetery in Abie with military honors conducted by American Legion Post 254 of Prague.
Memorials have been established to the Abie Fire Department, Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church and David City Aquinas High School.
Svoboda Funeral Home in Schuyler is in charge of arrangements.

Merrill Gunn
Merrill Lawrence Gunn, 92, was born Jan. 24, 1924, in Concordia to Ralph and Verda Gunn, the oldest of seven children. He died Feb. 14 in Placerville, Calif.
He attended Stover School for eight years and graduated from Republic High School. He married Pauline Van Nortwick on Oct. 3, 1943, in Republic.
Merrill farmed for eight years in Kansas and then moved to Camarillo, Calif., in 1952 where the family lived for many years in a house Merrill built. Merrill became a plumber and received his 60 year pin last year. He was a member of the Ventura Plumbers Union No. 484.
After retiring, Merrill and his wife moved to Placerville in 1989 to be near their youngest daughter, Julie, and her family. Merrill and Pauline were members of the Placerville Seventh-Day Adventist Church. He had been instrumental in establishing and serving in the Seventh-Day Adventist Church in Camarillo.
In his retirement Merrill enjoyed his grandchildren, traveling in the fifth-wheel, gardening, outdoor activities in Arizona, and restoring old photographs. Merrill was always interested in the world around him and taught himself how to use a personal computer. His hobbies included woodworking and fixing anything that was broken.
Merrill is survived by his wife of 72 years, Pauline; daughters, Mrs. Michael Davis (Susan) of Austin, Texas, and Mrs. Anthony Lonsdale (Julie) of Placerville, Calif.; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; a sister, Mrs. William Smith (Connie) of Republic; numerous cousins, nieces and nephews
He was preceded in death by his daughter, Peggy June Boedecker; brothers, Charles, Ralph Jr. and Robert Gunn; and sisters, Gayle Gunn and Marilynn Birrell.
At his request, there were no services. Arrangements were entrusted to Chapel of the Pines Funeral Home, Placerville, Calif.

Gene Miller
William Eugene "Gene" Miller, the son of Levi and Josephine G. (Kimminau) Miller, was born on Sept. 21, 1934, at Mt. Clare, Neb. He died on Feb. 17, 2016, at the Kingswood Court, where he resided, in Superior, Neb., at the age of 81 years.
Gene was one of 10 children. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Stephen's. He attended rural school at St. Stephen's, Lawrence, Neb. He was a member of St. Stephen's Catholic Church for 68 years, and after moving to Superior in 2002 became a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church.
Gene farmed his entire life. He loved farming, raising cattle and hogs and gardening. He always had a smile on his face for anyone he would meet.
Preceding him in death were his parents, brother Vincent, brothers-in-law William Rowley and Glen Hulet, nephews, Joe Miller, Edward Francis Miller, Greg Lohaus and Chuck Flagsted, and great-nephew Jeff Miller.
Survivors include his sisters, Bernice E. Miller, Rita M. Miller and Rosemary Rowley all of Superior, Neb., Betty L. Mazour and husband Jerome of Nelson, Neb., Margaret A. Hulet of Whitehall, Mich., and brothers, Alfred J. and wife Agnes and Wilfred H. and wife Helen all of Superior, Neb., Bernard J. and wife Joan of Shickley, Neb.; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and a host of friends.
Mass of Christian burial was held on Saturday, Feb. 20, 2016, at 11 a.m. from St. Stephen's Catholic Church in Rural Lawrence, Neb., with Father Brad Zitek officiating. Lecter was Arnold Miller, acolyte was Ron Rempe and altar servers were Ben Price and Jaden Hanson.
Music was provided by Gene's nieces and nephews.
Rosary Service was held on Friday, Feb. 19, 2016, at 7:30 p.m. at Megrue-Price Funeral Home.
Pallbearers were Jerry Miller, Mike Miller, Jim Miller, Don Mazour, Mark Hulet and Tony Rowley. Honorary Pallbearers were Gene's nieces and nephews.
Interment was at 2:30 p.m. in St. Stephen's cemetery at Lawrence, Neb.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given for Masses.
Megrue-Price Funeral Home of Superior, Neb., was in charge of the arrangements.

Lyle Rightmeier
Lyle S. Rightmeier, Mankato, Kan., was born Aug. 30, 1923, on a farm four miles south of Montrose, Kan., to Lewis and Leta (Clark) Rightmeier, and died Tuesday, Feb. 16, 2016, at the Jewell County Immediate Swing Bed, Mankato, Kan., at the age of 92 years, five months and 17 days.
Lyle was known as "Ike." He was one of seven children born to his parents. He was preceded in death by his parents, and his siblings and their spouses, Leonard, Loren, Lyman, Lester, Leona Winter and Leon Rightmeier.
Ike attended school at Hillsdale Country School and graduated from Montrose High School. He joined the United States Army on April 17, 1943, at Fort Leavenworth, Kan., and was discharged Jan. 12, 1946, with the rank of corporal, serving in the 124th Horse Cavalry regiment.
Lyle married Virginia Lee Snyder Oct. 21, 1951, at the Methodist Church, Montrose, Kan. To this union two children were born, Paula and Roger. They lived their earlier years in Montrose, moving to Mankato in 1951. Ike worked for the United States government as a surveyor and soil conservation technician. He was a member of the Harmony United Methodist Church, Mankato, Kan.
He is survived by his wife, Virginia, of Mankato; daughter, Paula and husband Terry Cherney, of Agenda, Kan.; son, Roger Lyle Rightmeier of Mankato, Kan.; three grandchildren, Carrie and husband David Hahn of Prairie Village, Kan., Patrick and wife Chantel Cherney of Newton, Kan., Bria Cherney of Denver, Colo.; three great-grandchildren, Keller Hahn, Audrey and Nora Cherney; siblings-in-law, Bonnie Snyder, Don and Barbara Snyder, Ron Intermill, Leta and Kenneth Adams; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Ike cherished his family and the many friends he made through the activities he enjoyed throughout his life, including fishing, hunting, bowling, golfing, gardening, singing in barbershop quartets and gaining his private pilot's license after his retirement.
Lyle S. Rightmeier has requested immediate cremation and services will be held at a later date to honor his life. Arrangements were made by Melby Mortuary, Mankato, Kan. Condolences to www.melbymortuary.com.

Walter Holdren
Walter Edwin Holdren, Mankato, Kan., was born Dec. 23, 1940, to Robert "Edwin" and Ruth (Jacobs) Holdren, in Superior, Neb., and died Wednesday, Feb. 17, 2016, at the Mitchell County Hospital Health Systems, Beloit, Kan., from a long battle of lung cancer, at the age of 75 years, one month and 24 days.
He graduated from Montrose High School in 1958. Walt married Vergaline (Hanson) on Feb. 23, 1963. The following year, he graduated with a bachelor's of arts degree in history from Fort Hays State University. In 1973, he received his master's degree in math from Emporia State University.
Walt's joy in life was being a teacher. His teaching career started off in Sylvan Grove, Munden and Republic. Thirty-four of 39 years was spent teaching seventh and eighth grade math at Belleville. After retiring in 2003, Walt continued to substitute for many more years in Belleville and Mankato Junior High School. During this time he also coached multiple sports like football and basketball, but his favorite was probably girls softball in the summer.
After retirement he spent his days reading (about a paperback a day) and going to all his grandchildren's events. Every February he looked forward to going to Texas with friends. One of his favorite pastimes was playing cards with family and friends. He always had a cribbage board and cards handy, ready to go. Later in life, he found a love for bowling.
He was preceded in death by his father, Edwin Holdren.
Survivors include his wife Vergaline, Mankato; three daughters, Rebecca Holdren and fiance John of Salina, Kan., Roxanne and husband Todd Kimminau of Beloit, Kan., Crystal and husband Blake Vacura of Omaha, Neb.; six grandchildren, Elliott Kimminau, El Dorado, Kan., TeJay and Garrett Kimminau. Beloit, Kan., Jacqueline Holdren, Salina, Kan., Ashley and Zachary Vacura, Omaha, Neb.; his mother, Ruth Holdren, Beloit, Kan.; three sisters, Mary Folsom, Maize, Kan., Betty and husband Bill Meis, Hays, Kan., Janet and husband Dave Wilcox, Beloit, Kan.; along with many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, other family and friends.
A celebration of life service for Walter Edwin Holdren, was held Monday, Feb. 22, 2016, at the Harmony United Methodist Church, Mankato, Kan., with Pastor Jim Brackett officiating. Mrs. Pat Grout was the organist, and Phil and Kristi Vetter performed the service music. The hymns were "When I Get To Heaven" and "One More Day." Casket bearers were Elliott Kimminau, TeJay Kimminau, Garrett Kimminau, Zachary Vacura, Jerry Anderson and Roger Rightmeier. Interment was in the Pleasant View cemetery, (Montrose) rural Formoso, Kan. Visitation was Sunday, Feb. 21, 2016, from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m., at Melby Mortuary, Mankato, Kan., with the family receiving friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday evening. Memorials may be given in Walter Edwin Holdren memory to the Mankato City Library in care of the mortuary. Service arrangements were arranged by Melby Mortuary, Mankato, Kan. Rachel Lauritzen
Rachel Susan Lauritzen, 100, was born Nov. 5, 1915, on a farm near Randall to Christian and Addie (Hart) Hanson. She died Monday at the Country Place in Scandia. Rachel graduated from Randall High School. On April 29, 1937, she married Alfred Lauritzen, and together they were blessed with two children, Joyce Ann and Arthur Dennis.
They lived and worked together for 61 years on their farm north of Courtland. Rachel was a true partner in the farming business, working side by side with Alfred to make it a success. Rachel liked playing cards with friends and family, caring for the cattle and land, canning and preserving foods, square dancing, traveling, quilting and caring for her family.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Alfred, on Oct. 30, 1998; brothers, Chester, Eugene and Arthur Hanson, and granddaughter, Kyla Anne Lauritzen. She is survived by daughter, Joyce Greer of Parkville, Mo., and son, Dennis Lauritzen of Courtland; grandsons Thad Lauritzen of Kansas City and Jim Greer of Lexington Park, Md.; granddaughters, Kori Field of Republic, Megan Lauritzen of Salina, Katey Field of Shawnee and Jennifer Stewart of Salina. She was also blessed with 14 surviving great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. She is also survived by her brother, Raymond, of Schuyler, many nieces and nephews and other relatives and friends.
Funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at the United Methodist Church in Courtland with burial at Rosemound cemetery in Hardy. Visitation will be today (Thursday) from 5 to 8 p.m., with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m., and also visitation on Friday from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tibbetts-Fischer Funeral Home assisted the Lauritzen family with these arrangements.

Lewis Butts
Lewis E. Butts, 102, Topeka, died Feb. 20 at the Topeka Presbyterian Manor. He was born Aug. 15, 1913, in Jewell County, the son of Ruben L. and Mary V. (Hoffer) Butts.
Lewis had resided in Topeka since 1944. He was employed as a mechanic for Dale Sharp Pontiac and Lewis Toyota before retiring in 1975. He was a member of the Topeka Church of the Brethren. Lewis and his wife were involved in the Good Sam Club and were editors of the Kansas Chapter Newsletter.
Lewis was known as the pancake man. He cooked pancakes for many organizations. He pieced many quilts, made walker bags, lap blankets and refurbished lawn chairs. He was a woodworker and also liked to fish.
Lewis married Cleo L. Hocket Nov. 11, 1936, in Glen Elder. She preceded him in death. He was also preceded in death by a son, Lewis Duane Butts; a brother, Clarence A. Butts; three sisters, Bertha Clark, Myrtle Keller and Zona Smith.
Survivors are his children, Robert Butts, David Butts and Charlotte Lesnet; 10 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Eugene Butts and Thomas Butts; and one sister, Lucile Ozmun.
Services were held today (Thursday) at 1 p.m. at the Topeka Presbyterian Manor Jellison Chapel. Entombment followed in Penwell-Gabel cemetery. Lewis lay in state and the family received friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Penwell-Gabel Parker-Price Chapel, Topeka.

Rose Schnakenberg
Rosemary Lou Schnakenberg, 77, the daughter of Herman and Alma (Brettmann) Elvers was born Aug. 19, 1938, in Brooklyn, N.Y. She died Feb. 16 at her home in Deshler.
She grew up in the Deshler area attending school and graduating from Deshler High School with the Class of 1956. After high school she attended Fairbury Junior College.
Rose was united in marriage to Arlo Bartling in 1957. This union was blessed with the birth of three children; Nicky, Daniel and Kristine. Arlo died following an automobile car accident.
In 1962 she married Merlen Ray Schnakenberg and to this union four more children were added to the family, Shelly, Jodi, Jani, and Jamie.
She enjoyed camping at Lovewell Lake and fishing. She liked being outdoors enjoying all of nature. Showing youngsters how to catch fish, telling stories and family gatherings brought her a lot of joy.
Saturdays were set aside for the ironing and sewing while listening to the radio and yelling for a Husker win.
Survivors include her husband, Merlen; three sons, Nicky Bartling, Deshler, Daniel Bartling, Aurora, Neb., and Jamie Schnakenberg, Wahoo; four daughters, Mrs. Mike Ellingson (Kristine), Crete, Shelly Schnakenberg, Phillips, Mrs. Bob Else (Jodi), Belvidere, and Mrs. Kevin Cottam (Jani) Hebron,14 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; brothers: Roger Elvers. Auburn, Calif., and Don Elvers, Sedalia, Mo.; and a sister, Mrs. Wayne Lomas (Berta) Crete.
Her funeral was Saturday at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Deshler. Casket bearers were Gary Brettmann, Steve Brettmann, Derek Schnakenberg, Tal Pinion, Greg Crockett and Bob Crockett.

Dean Taylor
Gerald 'Dean' Taylor, 79, Belleville, was born Sept. 2, 1936, to John and Nellie (Hyland) Taylor on the family farm near Haddam, KS. He died Feb. 15, at the Thayer County Hospital.
While serving in the Air National Guard, Dean met and married Ilah Metz on June 26, 1960, in Washington, Kan. They were blessed with four children. After his discharge, Dean was a quality control inspector for Boeing Aviation in Wichita. Dean and Ilah returned to the Northeast Kansas area where they were both raised and together they worked side-by-side as successful small business owners in both Washington and Republic counties. In Washington they owned the Ford and Mercury dealership and later Dean served as an agent for State Farm Insurance.
The family moved to Belleville in 1982 when Dean and Ilah purchased the Bell Villa Best Western Motel, Bell Villa Restaurant and Rock Island Lounge. After retiring in 1995, the couple traveled extensively.
He was preceded in death by both parents; a young daughter, Brenda; his brother, Virgil; and his sister, Maxine Zenger.
