LaVona Borwege
LaVona D. Borwege, 100, the daughter of Margaret (Blum) and John Armstrong, was born Feb.18, 1916, at Blue Hill. She died April 2 at the Heritage Care Center in Red Cloud.
A lifelong resident of Webster County, LaVona graduated from the Blue Hill High School in 1934 with a certificate in normal training. Her father died when she was 12 and she dedicated herself at a young age caring for her siblings and working around the home. She was united in marriage with Norbert A. Borwege on Feb. 4, 1934, at Osborne, Kan. They made their home north of Bladen. In 1990, the farm was sold and LaVona moved to Westgate Manor in Blue Hill to live.
After her family was raised, she was employed with the Blue Hill Care Center as a nurse's aide and cook.
LaVona was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church and was active for many years with the Nebraska Hereford Women's Association. In her leisure time, she enjoyed fishing, golf and bowling.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her stepfather, Charles Stowers; her husband, Norbert, on Dec. 24, 1989; a granddaughter, Tracy Jane Borwege; and brothers, John, Burdette, Marvin and Robert Eugene Armstrong.
Survivors include her children, Sharon Burgess of Red Cloud, Mrs. Larry Vance (Bonna) of Inavale, Mrs. Larry Overy (Diane) of Pauline, Mrs. Leonard Kucera (Colleen) of Deweese, and Norbert Scott Borwege of Miltonvale, Kan.; 11 grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; 24 -great-grandchildren; five step-great grandchildren; a brother, Lyle Armstrong, Folsom, Calif.; and a half-brother, Charles Stowers, Hastings.
Her funeral was held last Wednesday at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Blue Hill with Pastor John Dinkins officiating. Interment was in the Blue Hill cemetery.

Chris Petersen
Chris Allen Petersen, 54, was born May 24, 1961, in Holdrege. He died April 1 at Sandy, Utah.
Chris attended Superior Public schools, graduating with the Class of 1979. While attending high school, he was involved in the band and other organizations. After graduating from high school, he attended both Hastings and Kearney colleges.
On March 24, 1990, he married Denise Utterback. This union produced two children, Benjamin and Jenna. They later divorced.
He served in the United States Army Reserve as a cavalry scout (19D) and also as a drill sergeant for his unit. He was honorably discharged in 1991.
In 1991, he was accepted into the Federal Aviation Administration Academy located at Oklahoma City where he excelled and made many lifelong friends. Upon graduation, he was awarded a position as an air traffic control specialist in Salt Lake City, where he worked for 24 years. He retired in 2015.
Chris enjoyed cars, grilling, fishing, sailing, camping and anything that got him outdoors, especially with his friends and family.
Survivors include his son, Ben Petersen; a daughter, Jenna Petersen; his parents, Don and Darlene Peterson of Superior; and his best friend, Renn.
His funeral was held Saturday at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Sandy. His body will be interred at Fort McPherson National cemetery at a later date.

Larry Dankenbring
Larry Dean Dankenbring, 77, was born on March 20, 1939, to Oscar and Frieda (Muehling) Dankenbring in Hebron. He died March 31 at St. Elizabeth's Health Center in Lincoln, Neb. He graduated from Hebron High School in 1957, and from Doane College in 1961. He received a master's degree from UNL and was 18 credits away from receiving a doctorate.
Larry has three sisters, Verna Smith and Evelyn Harris, both of Lincoln, Neb., and Donna Schmidt of Deshler. Larry married Karen Ann Brinegar on Oct. 24, 1958, in Carleton. They were blessed with four children, a daughter, Mrs. Dale Patton (Debra) Branson West, Mo,, sons Robert Dankenbring, Hebron, William Dankenbring, Gunter, Texas,and Brad Dankenbring, Edmond, Okla. Survivors include 17 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
Larry coached and taught at Auburn, Neb., for 15 years before starting his insurance career at Nelson. He continued his insurance career in Hebron at New Frontier-Thayer County Insurance where he was a former owner. After semi-retiring, Larry found his passion was golfing. Larry and Karen travelled to several countries and throughout the United States. Larry enjoyed going to coffee in the mornings with his friends in Hebron, and the surrounding communities of Nelson and Davenport.
His funeral was April 4 at the First United Methodist Church, Hebron, with Pastor Mark Baldwin officiating. A family inurnment service will be held at a later date in the Hebron City cemetery. Urbauer-Price-Ahrendts Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Barbara Garvin
Barbara A. (Kile) Garvin, 76, died Thursday at Perkins Pavilion, Hastings.
Barbara was born Oct. 22, 1939, at Franklin, to Perry and Germaine (Sullivan) Kile. The family moved to Blue Hill when Barb was two years old. She was a member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Blue Hill. After WWII, the family moved to a farm near Bladen and she attended Bladen High School.
In 1958, Barb married Eugene Garvin. To this union, three children were born; Randy, Tom and Mary. The family were members of Sacred Heart Catholic Church. They lived in Nelson where they owned and operated the Orbit Inn. One of Barb's favorite things was making a huge meal for the senior football boys during Randy and Tom's senior years. She liked making Christmas a big family celebration by decorating her yard and for a few years decorated a tree on the courthouse lawn.
One of her greatest joys was taking care of her physical challenged daughter and seeing her accomplishments. After Barb and Gene were divorced, Barb and Mary moved to Hastings where Barb worked at St. Michael's School as a janitor until retiring. She was a member of St. Cecilia's Catholic Church and Altar Society.
Barbara was preceded in death by her parents, Perry and Germaine Kile; an infant sister; brothers, Bill Kile and Eldon Kile; and a sister, Fritz Boo.
Survivors include her children, Randy Garvin, Hastings, Tom Garvin, Clay Center, Neb., and Mary Garvin Hastings; four grandchildren; and a great-granddaughter.
Her funeral was Monday at St. Cecilia's Catholic Church with Father Adam Sughroue officiating. Burial was in Parkview cemetery, Hastings.

Pearl Schroer
Pearl Mary (Wombacher) Schroer, 98, died May 6, at the Good Samaritan Nursing Home in Superior. Rosary was May 9, and Mass, May 10, Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Lawrence, with Father Thomas Bush and Father Brad Zitek officiating. Burial was in Sacred Heart Catholic cemetery at Lawrence.
Pearl was born on Aug. 21, 1917, to George and Mary (Hofstetter) Wombacker at Lawrence. She was raised on a farm (her mother's parental home) 3 3/4 miles east of Lawrence as the third oldest of eight children. Because of her mother's health issues, Pearl assumed much of the household responsibility and developed a strong work ethic at a young age. She attended a nearby country school, the Gem School, through the eighth grade and graduated from Lawrence High School in 1935. After graduation, she moved to Iowa City, Iowa, where she lived with relatives and worked at the University Hospital until she returned home and married Arnold J. Schroer on May 6, 1941, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Lawrence. They made their home on farms near Nelson and south of Lawrence until retiring in 1981.
Pearl led a faith-filled life and made worshipping the Lord a priority; she was an active member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church and Altar Society. She was an avid gardener and an excellent seamstress. Pearl created countless quilts she gifted to others, and also enjoyed being an active member of the Sacred Heart Quilting Circle.
Survivors include two sons, Larry Schroer of Bennington, Neb., and Elroy Schroer of Omaha; two daughters, Mrs. Ken Himmelberg (Jean Ann) of Nelson, and Mrs. Donald Roeder (Bonnie) of Plymouth, Minn.; two sisters, Mrs. Paul Thomassen (Arlene) of Yuba City, Calif., and Mrs. Tom Detwiler (Leona) of Chadron; 13 grandchildren; and 25 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; on son; Bernard Schroer; one great-granddaughter, Reece Himmelberg; four brothers, Wilber, Ray, Delbert and Omer Wombacher; and one sister, Mrs. Nick Murphy (Norma).

Ruth Jackson
Ruth Irene Jackson, 73, the daughter of Cecil (Young) and Howard Thompson, was born May 29, 1942, at Superior. She died Thursday at the Franklin County Memorial Hospital in Franklin, Neb.
Ruth grew up in Superior and received her formal education attending the Superior schools, graduating with the Class of 1960. She married George LaVerne "Stonewall" Jackson on May 25, 1960, at the United Methodist Church in Red Cloud. This union was blessed with two daughters and two sons. They lived at Red Cloud, McCool Junction and Arapahoe, returning to Superior in 1964. Ruth was employed with Wheeler's and with the Superior Police Department. In 1979, the family moved to Hastings to live. Ruth worked with the K-Mart Store while living there. Her husband died on March 4, 2003. In 2007, she moved to Riverton to make her home.
While raising her family, Ruth volunteered as both a Girl Scout and a Cub Scout Leader. She was an Avon representative for a number of years. She was also a member of the Eagles lodge. In her leisure time, Ruth enjoyed gardening, collecting owls and playing the piano.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a sister, Kay Thompson; and an infant brother, Charles Thompson.
Survivors include her children, Kiley Bera of Grand Island; Kelly Steiger of Hastings; Keith Jackson of Riverton, and Leighton "Chuck" Jackson of Hastings; 13 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Mrs. Bill Riley (Pam) of Superior, and Dayle Woods of Hazelhurst, Ga.
Her funeral was held Monday at the Williams Funeral Home in Red Cloud with the Rev. Audrey Beaty officiating. Interment was in the Evergreen cemetery at Superior.

Frank Moravek
Frank Moravek, 68, the son of Gwendolyn (Simpson) and Kenneth R. Moravek, was born Sept. 4, 1947, at Red Cloud. He died last Wednesday at Brodstone Memorial Hospital.
Frank grew up in the Guide Rock community and received his formal education attending the Guide Rock schools, graduating with the Class of 1966. He was employed for a time with Dutton Lainson Company in Hastings and later with Reinke Manufacturing at Deshler. He traveled with his family working with the custom harvest crew.
He was united in marriage with Ellamae Ewer on Dec. 15, 1968, at Guide Rock. This union was blessed with a daughter, Peggy.
Frank was a lifelong Nebraska Husker football fan and also enjoyed fishing and playing pitch with the gang at the Tin Roof in Guide Rock.
Survivors include his wife, Ellamae, of Superior; a daughter, Peggy Moravek of Blue Hill; brother, George Moravek of Riverhead, N.Y.; and a sister, Mrs. Ted Schomburg (Ruth) of Kasson, Minn.
His funeral was held Saturday at the Williams Funeral Home in Red Cloud with Missy Wilt officiating. Interment was in the Guide Rock cemetery.

Gary Lewis
Gary A. Lewis was born June 29, 1948, to Daisy (Moore) and Elmer Lewis at Red Cloud, joining sister, Maxine, and brothers, Paul, Leroy and Robert, in a rural Jewell county community. The family moved to a Nebraska farm in the Walnut Creek area where he often rode his horse, "Princess," to country school. While growing up on the farm, he developed an interest in outdoor hunting and fishing. He often got in trouble with his dad for going fishing when he was considered to be too young to go off on his own. He attended high school in Red Cloud and joined the Kansas National Guard in 1967, serving through 1973.
In 1968, Gary married Bonnie Figgins at Red Cloud. To this union a son, Barry, and daughter, Amy, were born.
He was employed by Dutton-Lainson in Hastings and Peterson Oil in Red Cloud. He was a co-founder of Figgins & Lewis Construction Company. In 2005 he moved to Arkansas. He accepted the Lord as his Savior and was baptized at Crestview Baptist Church in 2011. In 2013 he and Bonnie returned to Nebraska to enjoy their seven grandchildren and the birth of their first great-grandchild.
Survivors include his wife, Bonnie; son, Barry; grandchildren Elizabeth, Elijah, Ethan, Abby and Kaleb of Guide Rock; daughter, Mrs. Mike Koler (Amy), grandsons, Joshua and Nick; great-granddaughters, Peyton and Taylor Fuhr.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Maxine.
His funeral was held Saturday at the Revival Tabernacle Church in Red Cloud with Pastor Darrell Sutton officiating.

Dorothy Fischer
Dorothy Marie Ida (Eitzmann) Fischer, 90, was born March 18, 1926. She died last Wednesday at Belleville Health Care Center, Dorothy was the oldest of four children born to Ernest A. and Amanda Maria (Peters) Eitzmann. She was born in the Byron home of her grandparents, Frederick and Maria Peters. Dorothy graduated eighth grade at Blue Mound rural grade school, located at the north end of the quarter mile long driveway to her family home in Kansas, one mile south and 3/4 mile west of Byron. She attended Byron High School and graduated as salutatorian of her high school class in 1944.
After passing the required exam given at the Thayer County Courthouse Dorothy taught at a rural country school west of Byron, for one year. They she attended Beauty Academy in Beatrice and become a beautician. Dorothy attended the Beauty Academy in Beatrice. She worked at a beauty shop in Nelson. When she was 21 years old, she purchased a Byron beauty shoppe.
Dorothy was united in marriage to (Ivan) Gene Fischer on May 1, 1949, at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Byron. To this union, three daughters were born. Dorothy and Gene moved to Dorothy's childhood home in Kansas in October, 1951, and began life on the farm. Dorothy moved her beauty shop to the farm and continued her hairdressing career, along with raising 3 daughters. Her niece, Sandra, joined the family in 1969. She helped Gene with the farm work.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband, Gene; her parents, Ernest A. and Amanda M. Eitzmann; infant daughter, Jackie Lynn Fischer; brothers, Myron Frederick and Arland Kenneth Eitzmann; and a sister, Florence Irene Bostwick.
Survivors include her her daughters, Mrs. Ray Danielson (Brenda), Belleville, Mrs. Vern Uri (Tamie) Golden, Colo., and Sandra Bostwick, Belleville; and grandson, Christopher L. Uri, Golden, Colo.
Her funeral was held Monday at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Byron, with Pastor Breen Marie Sipes officiating. Burial was in the St. Paul cemetery, Byron. Tibbetts-Fischer Funeral Home, Belleville, was in charge of the arrangements.

Norman Lipker
Norman Ray Lipker, 72, of Hebron, the son of Albert and Esther (Doering) Lipker, was born July 3, 1943, at Oak. He died Thursday at Blue Valley Lutheran Home in Hebron.
Norm attended school at Ruskin and married Elaine Ward Sept, 9, 1961, at the Church of Christ in Nelson. This union was blessed with the birth of three children.
From1981 through 1994 he drove for Jensby Trucking at Hardy, after that he drove for Bill Larkins then George Eberly and for Saltzman Trucking. His passion was driving truck and hauling cattle. He drove more than six million miles in more than 40 years.
He married Lorna Renken Feb, 29, 1996, in York.
He liked to tinker in the shop, working on different things and then spray painting them to give them a newer look, even using a little duct tape.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and three brothers, Lester, Dennis, and Steve Lipker.
Survivors include one son, Todd Lipker of Ruskin; two daughters, Mrs. Kent Betten (Rhonda) of Deshler, and Mrs. Lyle Tietjen (Tracy), of Hebron; two brothers, Robert of Harvard and Barry of Hastings; a sister, Mrs. Lloyd Holtzen (Marilyn) of Davenport; two sisters-in-law, Peggy Lipker of Superior, and Moneen Lipker of Aurora, Colo.; granddaughter, Jessica Brown and husband Brett of Blair, Brady Betten of Yankton, S.D,, Kayla Lipker of Lincoln, Neb., Kinsey and McKenna Tietjen both of Hebron, four great-grandchildren; Quinn, Jonas and Drake Brown of Blair, and Madilyn Betten of Yankton, S.D,
His funeral was held Monday at Kroll Funeral Home Chapel in Hebron. Officiant was Pastor Brian Francik, organist Joy Wolfe, congregational hymns "In The Garden", "Old Rugged Cross" and "Abide With Me", special selection: recorded CD "Kansas City, Here I come".
Casket bearers were Brett and Brady Betten, Doug Holtzen, Derek Lipker, Steve Drohman and Dave Larkins. Honorary casket bearers were the grandchildren. Interment was in Sprink Creek cemetery near Ruskin. Kroll Funeral Home of Hebron, was in charge of arrangements.
