Norman Albright, 79

(Feb. 4) PARAMOUNT, Calif. - Norman Albright, 79, formerly of Alliance, died Friday, Feb. 2, 2002. His survivors include his brother, Philip Albright, of Alliance.

Howard E. McCarty, 87

(Feb. 4) HEMINGFORD - Howard E. McCarty, 87, died Saturday, Feb. 2, 2002, at the Hemingford Community Care Center. He was born March 19, 1914, at Garden County, Neb. to Wilber Earl and Genevieve (Yake) McCarty.

He served in the United States Army during World War II. He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Mary Katheryn and Edgar Ellison of Cannon City, Colo; grandchildren, Melissa J. Ellison of Albuquerque, N.M., Shelia L. Ellison of Lakeland, Fla., and Brenda K. and James Rebb of Selts Mills, N.Y. He was preceded in death by his parents, and one sister, Helen.

Memorial services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 6, at the Bates-Gould Chapel, with Rev. Dan Floyd officiating. Memorials may be given to Prairie Haven Hospice or the Hemingford Community Care Center. Bates-Gould Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Elmer J. Wiese, 90

(Feb. 4) MULLEN - Elmer J. Wiese, 90, died Thursday, Jan. 31, 2002, at Pioneer Memorial Nursing Home in Mullen, Neb. He was born May 4, 1911, in the rural Mullen area. His parents were Louis and Edith (Clemens) Wiese.

He attended Calf Creek Country School until the family moved to Burwell in 1920, to Omaha in 1924 and then returned to the Sandhills in 1932 where he worked for the area ranches. He moved to Pequot Lakes, Minn., in 1937 and developed a purebred Angus herd. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II (1942-45), and was part of the landing on Omaha Beach and the Battle of the Bulge. He earned a Purple Heart and Bronze Star. He married Ruby Jones on Jan. 14, 1961, at Pine River, Minn. The couple moved to Arkansas in 1972, and worked for Wal-Mart. They moved back to Mullen in 1995, and he earned his diploma from Mullen High School in 2000. He was a lifetime member of the VFW, and a member of American Legion Post No. 109 of Mullen and Disabled American Veterans. He is survived by his wife, Ruby Wiese of the home in Mullen. He also is survived by two brothers, Harold Wiese of Pine River, Minn., and Eldon Wiese of Pequot Lakes, Minn.; and four sisters, Tillie Rice of Mullen, Leona Evenson of Minnesota Lake, Minn., Nellie Scofield of Winnebago, Minn., and Dorothy Swift of Elizabethtown, Ky.

Mr. Wiese's funeral will be at 1:30 p.m. Monday, Feb. 4, at St. Joseph's Episcopal Church in Mullen, with William Graham officiating. Burial will be in Cedar Cemetery, with full military honors. Visitation will be from 4 p.m. until 9 p.m. Saturday, 1 p.m. until 4 p.m. Sunday, and from 9 a.m. until 11 a.m. Monday at Mullen Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to St. Joseph's Episcopal Church.

Ruth Marie Scott, 86

(Feb. 5) HEMINGFORD - Ruth Marie Scott, 86, died Sunday, Feb. 4, 2001, at Chadron Community Hospital. She was born Oct. 20, 1914, at Dunlap, Neb. Her parents were Fred and Agnes (Esancy) Neeland.

In 1919, her family moved to Chadron where she attended school and graduated from Chadron High School in 1932. She then attended Chadron State Normal College for two years. She was married to Edward H. "Bud" Scott on Jan. 8, 1939, at Cottonwood Valley where they resided for the rest of their lives, while farming and ranching. Mr. Scott died June 18, 1997. She was a charter member of the Open Door Church where she taught Sunday School for many years, including adult classes for 25 years.

She is survived by her two sons, Jerry Scott of Hemingford and Robert Edward Scott of Texas; daughter Rosemarie Meradith of Chadron; seven grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Scott's funeral will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 7, at Chamberlain Chapel of Chadron, with Carl Koester and Steve Moody officiating. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery. Memorials may be made in care of Community First Bank of Chadron. Chamberlain Chapel of Chadron is in charge of arrangements.

Paul M. Durham, 76

(Feb. 5) TRAIL, Ore. - Paul Marion Durham, 76, former Alliance resident, died Thursday, Dec. 14, 2000, at his home in Trail, Ore. He was born Sept. 24, 1924, at Mullen, Neb. His parents were Frank and Mary Durham.

He married Levada Kloefkom in 1943. She preceded him in death in 1957. He married Ramona L. Claussen Feb. 8, 1958, at Sterling, Colo. He served in the U.S. Navy during 1944-46, and in the Navy Reserve until 1951. He owned and operated the P&M Exxon in San Clemente, Calif, with his son David from 1962 until 1983. He then owned his own tow truck until he retired in 1985. While living in Alliance, he sang in a barbershop quartet. He was a lifetime member of the VFW of Shady Cove, and a volunteer firefighter.

He is survived by his wife, Ramona Durham of the home in Trail; two sons, Larru Durham of Mooresville, N.C. and David L. Durham of Lake Forest, Calif.; two daughters, Vera Arlene Bowen of St. Louis, Mo., and Mary L. Mulkey of Jacksonville, Ark.; 13 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

Mr. Dunham's graveside service was Tuesday, Dec. 19, at Eagle Point National Cemetery, Oregon, with an American Legion honor guard. Memorials may be made to Piggy Bank of San Clemente, BPOE Elks Lodge No. 2068. 1505 N. El Camino Real, San Clemente, CA 92672.

A. John Lorenzini, 83

(Feb. 5) CHADRON - Americo John Lorenzini, 83, died Monday, Feb. 4, 2002, at the Chadron Community Hospital. He was born July 31, 1918, near Fort Morgan, Colo., to John and Maria Lorenzini.

He enlisted in the Army at Lowry Field, near Denver, Colo., Nov. 5, 1940, and served in the 1697th Ordnance Company in the North Africa & European Theaters of War, returning after the end of the war in Europe in 1945. He began working for the Chicago, Burlington, and Quincy Railroad in 1947 and continued with the Burlington Northern Railroad until his retirement in 1984. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers. He is survived by his wife Harriet Lorenzini of Alliance; daughter and son-in-law, Nancy and Eric Nixon of Chadron; son and daughter-in-law, Robert and Carole Lorenzini of Pleasanton, Calif.; son, James Lorenzini of Pensacola, Fla.; nine grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. He also is survived by one brother, Joe Lorenzini of Warren, Mich. He was preceded in death by his son, John Lorenzini, one granddaughter, three sisters, and two brothers.

A celebration of life will be at 10 a.m., Thursday, Feb. 7, at the Bates-Gould Chapel with Pastor Steve Moody officiating. Inurnment will be at Fort Morgan, Colorado. Memorials may be given to a charity of the donor's choice. Bates-Gould Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Lee Donald Thompson, 79

(Feb. 6) SCOTTBLUFF - Lee Donald Thompson, 79, of Scottsbluff died Sunday, Feb. 4, 2001, at Beverly Healthcare Center at Scottsbluff. He was born Aug. 30, 1921, in the Nebraska Sandhills. His parents were Wray B. and Sarah (Trussler) Thompson.

He served in the U.S. Army during World War II, in Italy, Austria and Germany, and was awarded two Purple Hearts and a Bronze Star. He married Gladys Irene McFarland on Oct. 28, 1951, at Scottsbluff. Mrs. Thompson died Jan. 19, 2001. We worked on ranches in western Nebraska and eastern Wyoming, and later was a janitor with Scottbluff Public Schools.

He is survived by his son Dewey Thompson of Holts Summit, Mo.; and one grandchild. He also is survived by his sister Leah Donna McCune of Benkleman , Neb.

Mr. Thompson's funeral will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 7, at Jolliffe Funeral Home at Scottsbluff. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery in Scottsbluff. Visitation will be from 3:30 p.m. until 8 p.m. today, Feb. 6, at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Beverly Healthcare Center in Scottsbluff.

Kristin Bottger, 22

(Feb. 6) LINCOLN - Kristin Marie Bottger, 22, died Tuesday, Feb. 4, 2003, at Omaha. She was born Dec. 17, 1980, at Alliance to Norman and Sheri (Kunzman) Bottger.

She was a 1999 graduate of Pius X High School and was a senior in business at the University of Nebraska at Lincoln. She was participating in an accounting internship with KPMG of Omaha. She was active in Right to Life and university of Nebraska Newman Center. She was a member of St. Peter's Catholic Church. She is survived by her parents, Norm and Sheri Bottger of Lincoln; sister Andrea (Dustin) Dreger of Enid, Okla.; brother, Sean Bottger of Lincoln; nephew and niece Joseph and Mikaela Kreger of Enid; grandparents Norman and Mary Bottger of Belleville, Kan., and Aggie Kunzman of Alliance; fiance, John vonRentzell of Lincoln; and his family, Rich and Kathy and Tom vonRentzell of Lincoln, and Elizabeth vonRentzell of Denver, Colo. She was preceded in death by her grandfather Paul Kunzman and cousin Nolan Bottger.

A Mass of Christian burial will be a 1 p.m., Friday, Feb. 7, at St. Peter's Catholic Church, with Fr. Thomas Bush officiating. Burial will be in Lincoln Memorial Park. A Rosary will be at 7 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 6, at the church. Visitation will be for one hour prior to Mass on Friday, Feb. 7. Pallbearers will be Bob Fillaus, Rill Christen, Justin Meyer, Gabe Kidwell, Adam Schlautman and Tom vonRentzell. Honorary pallbearers will be Jared and Casey Moscrip, Richard Willey, Ri Kunzman, Brett Bottger and Nathan Fiser. Memorials have been established to Pius X High School, Autism Society of America or in care of the family toward a scholarship to be given in her memory. Funeral arrangements by Lincoln Memorial Funeral Home.

Edith A. "Midge" Gaines, 82

(Feb. 6) ALLIANCE - Edith Alene "Midge" Gaines died Feb. 4, 2003, at Good Samaritan Health Care Center. She was born March 28, 1920, in Ravenna, Neb., to Charlie and Jennie (Hanke) Tutt.

The family moved to Alliance in 1927, remaining there through their lifetime. Edith graduated from Alliance High School in 1939. She married George Martin in 1940 and to this union one son, George Charles was born. On March 28, 1968, she was united in marriage to Archie Gaines in Alliance. They were engaged in long distance trucking for five years before buying Bert's Welding Shop in 1973. They changed the name to Gaines Steel Supply Company, Inc., which they operated until May 1, 2002. Midge was admitted to Good Samaritan in April 2002. Her parents, two sisters, Eva Duff and Alva Mae Weiland, and one brother Leonard Charles Tutt preceded her in death. She is survived by her husband, Archie Gaines; son George Charles Tutt of Spokane, Wash.; two granddaughters, Nicole Tutt and Kirstin and husband Bob Votava; and three great-grandchildren. She is also survived by stepchildren, Diane Lay of Vinita, Okla., Randy Gaines of Garvin, Okla.; four grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. Midge was a member of the First Baptist Church, Gideons International Auxiliary, and former member of Eastern Star, B.P.O. Does, and Good-Sam Camping Club. She enjoyed church, family, friends, her camper trailer and membership in the Hart Ranch in the Black Hills of South Dakota.

Funeral services will be Saturday, Feb. 8, 2003, at 10 a.m. at the First Baptist Church in Alliance. Reverend Jim Rowe will officiate. Burial will be in the Alliance Cemetery. Memorials may be given to Gideon International, First Baptist Church or to a church of the donor's choice. Bates-Gould Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Loren C. Solberg, 77

(Feb. 6) ALLIANCE - Loren C. Solberg, 77, died Wednesday, Feb 5, 2003, at Box Butte General Hospital. He was born Aug. 15, 1925, at Alliance, Neb., to Oscar N. and Johanna (Johnson) Solberg.

He married Wanda Hammond July 18, 1954, at Alliance. He served in the United States Army from April of 1944 to May of 1946 in the 84th Infantry Division, Company L, 334th. In 1949, he joined Cliff Gregory and helped build Gregory's Insurance. In 1972, he bought Gregoryâs Insurance and was president until he retired and sold the company in 1984. He was a member of the First Christian Church, past president of the State Professional Insurance Agents, past state director of Professional Insurance Agents, past national director of Professional Insurance Agents, past chairman of the Box Butte General Hospital Building Committee, a member of the Lions Club where he was also past president, a life member of the VFW, American Legion, where he was past commander, and the Elks, where he was on the Finance Committee, a 30-year member of the Eagles, a member of the Cattle Capital Shrine Club and the Masons. He received the Lions Club Edward Jones Award and the Mutual Insurance Agent of the Year Award. He is survived by his wife, Wanda Solberg of Alliance; son and daughter-in-law, Gaylord and Nancy Solberg of Alliance; daughter and son-in-law, Bev and Paul Bergeland of Grapevine, Texas; brother and sister-in-law, Mearl and Gladys Solberg of Loveland, Colo.; brother-in-law, Claude Hammond of Alliance; grandchildren, Heath and his wife Destiny, and Justin, Jenni, and Matt; three step-grandchildren, four great step-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews, and many friends in Alliance and Donna, Texas. He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, and a sister.

Memorial services will be Saturday, Feb. 8, 2003, at 2 p.m. at the First Christian Church, with the Reverend William J. Graham officiating. Burial with military rites will be in the Alliance Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorials to the Sallows Military Museum, 908 Yellowstone, Alliance, Nebraska, 69301, the First Christian Church, Box Butte General Hospital, the American Cancer Society, or the donor's choice. Bates-Gould Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Betty Ruth Naylor, 72

(Feb. 7) CALLAWAY - Betty Ruth (Shipley) Naylor passed away at her home in Corona, Calif., on Saturday, Feb. 3, 2001, at the age of 72 years, 4 months and 2 days.

Betty was born on Oct. 1, 1928, on the North Table to Hubert Forrest and Thelma Evelyn (Fochtman) Shipley. She spent all of her growing up years in Callaway, Neb., graduating from Callaway High School with the class of 1946. She then attended Kearney Teachers College in Kearney, Neb., for one year. Betty taught for three years in rural schools around Callaway. On June 1, 1949, she was united in marriage to Robert Eugene Naylor in her family's home in Callaway. Betty worked as a homemaker, raising three children and also worked at the Right Drug Store, Leo's Market, Callaway Cafe, Loup Valley Queen and the Callaway Hosiptal. She and her husband moved to California in 1983, where she babysat for several families and later for her own grandchildren.

Betty's greatest pleasures were her family. She enjoyed reading, Counted cross-stitch, writing letters to friends and family and telephone conversations with her family. She never missed a birthday or anniversary She will be greatly missed by her family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents and one sister, Doreen Smith.

Betty is survived by her husband, Bob of the home, daughter, Becky and husband Dave Mitchell, of Alliance, Neb., sons, Kevin and wife, Olga of Corona, Calif. and Kent and wife, Machell of Alliance, Neb., three grandsons, Ethan, Austin, and Caleb, and one granddaughter, Crysta, one brother-in-law, Richard Smith and his son, Rick and family of California. She is also survived by her daughter-in-law, Olga's sister, Mary Rocha and husband Marcus, Jr. and their three children, Marcus, Madalena, and Macaela, who adopted her as their mom and grandma.

Memorial services will be held on Thursday, Feb. 8, 2001, at the Sierra Memorial Chapel Mortuary in Riverside, Calif., at 3:30 p.m. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, Feb. 13, 2001, at the United Methodist Church in Callaway, Neb., at 1:30 p.m. with Rev. Mark Schutt officiating. Burial will be in the Rose Hill Cemetery in Callaway, Neb. The Bates-Gould Funeral Home of Alliance, Nebraska is in charge of arrangements. .

Dennis C. Gasseling, 53

(Feb. 7) POTTER - Dennis C. Gasseling, 53, of Potter died Saturday, Feb. 3, 2001, at Regional West Medical Center in Scottsbluff. He was born Feb. 28, 1947, at Alliance. His parents were Joseph and Mary (Curran) Gasseling.

He was raised on a farm in Hemingford and attended Hemingford High School, where he lettered in football for three years. At age 17, he moved to Carlsbad, N.M., and was employed in the potash industry. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in March 1966, and served in Germany and Viet Nam. After discharge in 1972, he moved to Sidney and was employed by Dinklage Feed Yard for the past 15 years.

He is survived by his mother, Mary Gasseling of Carlsbad, N.M.; three sons, Terry Nation, Fred Nation and Dale Robertson, all of Sidney; and eight grandchildren. He also is survived by three brothers, Butch Gasseling of Lincoln, Neb., Dave Gasseling of Norfolk, Neb., and Edward Gasseling of Carlsbad; and two sisters, Teresa Behm of Alliance and Mary Menuey of Carlsbad, N.M.

Mr. Gasseling's funeral will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 8, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Sidney, with Fr. Ted Nekoliczak officiating. A Christian wake service will be held at 7 p.m. today, Feb. 7, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Sidney. Burial will be in Potter Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the family's choice. Gerhig & Son Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
