Helen Teply
Helen E. Teply, 90, of Clarkson died Saturday, Aug. 9, 2003, at her home.
Helen Hanzel was born Feb. 21, 1913, in Howells. She graduated in 1930 from Howells Public Schools. She married Alvin W. Teply on June 10, 1930, in Howells. She was a retired cook at Clarkson Public School. Her spouse preceded her in death in 1980.
She served as an officer in the Z.C.B.J. Lodge for many years. She played the piano in several movie theaters and on the radio. She was a member of Sts. Cyril and Methodius Catholic Church and Clarkson Womens Club.
Survivors include: two daughters, Helen (Mrs. Bjorn "Ted") Tidies and Judy (Mrs. Dennis) Kabes, all of Alamo, Texas; seven granddaughters and 12 great-grandchildren.
She also was preceded in death by a grandson and a brother.
The funeral will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Sts. Cyril and Methodius Catholic Church in Clarkson with the Rev. Floyd Wessling officiating. Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Friday at Miller Funeral Home in Clarkson and 9-10 a.m. Saturday at the church. A rosary will be said at 7 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Clarkson National cemetery.
Memorials have been established to Z.C.B.J. Lodge and St. John Neuman Catholic School.

Bonnie Dau
The funeral for Bonnie B. Dau, 71, of Wahoo will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at First Congregational Church in Wahoo.
She died Thursday, Aug. 14, 2003, in Lincoln.
Bonnie Lobeda was born Oct. 4, 1931, in Ong. She graduated from Ong High School in 1948. She married George Harnett on Aug. 7, 1948, in Ong. She later married John R. "Jack" Dau on June 24, 1988, in Wahoo. She worked as a secretary for Roller Skating Rink Operators Association of America from 1967-1976, a secretary and receptionist for Western Supply from 1976-1984, both in Lincoln, and as an employee of Platte Valley Foods in Wahoo from 1984-1993. She had been a resident of Wahoo since 1956.
She was a member of American Legion Auxiliary Unit 82 in Wahoo.
Survivors include: her husband; three sons, Kevin Harnett (and special friend, Gwen Woita) of Weston, Craig Harnett of Wahoo, Barry Harnett of Omaha; a daughter, Janelle Givens (and special friend, Kenn Hulse) of York; three brothers, Dale Lobeda, Jerry (and wife, Arlene) Lobeda all of Ong, Bud (and wife Sherrel) Lobeda of Omaha; a daughter-in-law, Tonya Harnett of Nickerson; a stepdaughter, Kathy (Mrs. Rod) Urban of Wahoo; a stepdaughter-in-law, Jean Dau of Lincoln; 10 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a son and stepson.
The Rev. Todd Storm will officiate Mondays service. Visitation will be from 3-7 p.m. Sunday for the family at Svoboda Funeral Home in Wahoo and one hour before service time at the church. Burial will be at Sunrise cemetery in Wahoo.
A memorial has been established to Alcoholics Anonymous of the Wahoo Chapter.
Svoboda Funeral Home in Wahoo is in charge of arrangements.

Mary Nielsen
Mary I. Nielsen, 87, of Fremont died Saturday, Aug. 16, 2003, at A.J. Merrick Manor in Fremont.
Mary Brewer was born March 12, 1916, in Emmett, Idaho. Her family moved to Silver Creek when she was young. Later in her childhood, she moved to Fremont. At age 17, she married William Lackas. In 1950, she married Joseph Nielsen to whom she was married until his death on May 30, 1983. She ran the Junction Cafe on East 23rd Street and was a delivery person for Ol Style Lager Beer in the surrounding communities.
She was a member of the Disabled American Veterans Auxiliary and American Legion Post 20 Auxiliary.
Survivors include: four sons, Arthur (and wife, Sally) Lackas, Donald (and wife, Donna Lee) Lackas, John (and wife, Barb) Nielsen and Albert (and wife, Pam) Nielsen, all of Fremont; a daughter, Nancy (Mrs. James) Joseph of Fremont; seven grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and a great-great-grandchild.
She also was preceded in death by a grandchild and several brothers and sisters.
The funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Ludvigsen Mortuary Chapel in Fremont with the Rev. Norman Freund of First Lutheran Church officiating. Visitation will be from 1-9 p.m. today at the funeral home. Burial will be in Memorial cemetery in Fremont.
A memorial has been established to A.J. Merrick Manor.

Emily Abbas
The funeral for Emily J. Abbas, 64, of Wahoo will be 10 a.m. Friday at Temple Baptist Church, 50th and Randolph streets, in Lincoln.
She died Tuesday, Aug. 19, 2003, at her home.
Emily Hargrave was born Dec. 11, 1938, in Dickens, Iowa. She graduated from Webster City High School in Webster City, Iowa, and Webster City Junior College. She married John R. Abbas on June 26, 1959, in Webster City. She worked as a grade school teacher, childcare provider and homemaker.
She was a longtime member of Temple Baptist Church in Lincoln, and more recently was a charter member of Gretna Baptist Church in Gretna.
Survivors include: her husband; four daughters, Brenda Abbas of Boston, Elizabeth (Mrs. Dallas) Dick of Omaha, Rebekah (Mrs. Christopher) Lyon of Parker, Colo., and Beverly (Mrs. Myron) Alloway of Hastings; two brothers, Ron (and wife, Martha) Hargrave of Webster City and Russell (and wife, Judy) Hargrave of Albert Lea, Minn.; two sisters, Betty (Mrs. Merrill) Blackburn of Des Moines, Iowa, and Alice (Mrs. Orville) Sangl of Spirit Lake, Iowa; and four grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a sister and brother-in-law.
Visitation will be from 2-8 p.m. Thursday at Pruss-Nabity Funeral Home in Wahoo. Burial will be in Sunrise cemetery in Wahoo.

Edward Hassett
Edward J. Hassett, 44, of Fremont died Monday, Aug. 18, 2003, at Arbor Manor Living Center in Fremont.
Hassett was born Sept. 9, 1958, in San Diego and was raised in Alameda, Calif., attending Alameda Schools. He moved to Fremont from Montana earlier this year.
Survivors include: four sisters, Cory (Mrs. Ed) Triggs of Fremont, Kathy (Mrs. Peter) DiCesare and Mary (Mrs. Scott) Brewer, all of Alameda, Calif., and Pamela (Mrs. John) Wesley of East Carondelet, Ill.; and a brother, Chris Hasse of Hayward, Calif.
The body will be cremated. Services will be held in Montana.
Lattin-Dugan-Chambers Funeral Chapel in Fremont in charge of arrangements.

Maxine McDowell
The funeral for Maxine M. McDowell, 74, of Fremont will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Moser Memorial Chapel in Fremont.
She died Sunday, Aug. 24, 2003, at Fremont Area Medical Center.
Maxine Strunk was born Jan. 3, 1929, in Bellwood. She grew up in Schuyler and moved to Fremont in 1949. She worked at Rogers Tent & Awning in Fremont and at the former Petersens Cafe in Fremont where she met her husband. She married Donald A. McDowell on Nov. 7, 1953, in Fremont. After her marriage, she was a bookkeeper for the family businesses, McDowell Trucking and Carburetor Electric, both in Fremont. She also was a homemaker and a CB (citizens band) radio home base operator, with the handle of "Little Toy." Her spouse preceded her in death Nov. 19, 1990.
Survivors include: a son, George R. (and wife, Lillian) McDowell of Fremont; three daughters, Linda Jarose of Fremont (and fiancé, Dennis Kvetensky of Ralston), Donna (Mrs. John) Connelly of Omaha and Laura McDowell of Fremont; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
She also was preceded in death by an infant daughter, two brothers, a sister and two great-grandchildren.
The Rev. Greg Hall of First United Methodist Church in Fremont will officiate Thursdays service. Visitation will be from 2-9 p.m. Wednesday and 9-11 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Memorial cemetery.
A memorial has been established to Dodge County Humane Society.

Mattie Burt
The funeral for Mattie D. Burt, 97, of Fremont, formerly of the Leshara area, will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at Ludvigsen Mortuary Chapel in Fremont.
She died Tuesday, Aug. 26, 2003, at A. J. Merrick Manor in Fremont.
Mattie Combs was born Nov. 2, 1905, in Homer to Frank and Maude "Pilgrum" Combs. She grew up in South Sioux City. She had worked for a doctor and also had been a mid-wife. She had worked in Illinois for the Johns-Manville Co. She also had worked in Fremont for Campbell Soup Co. (Swanson Foods), Rogers Tent & Awning and the Erin Motel.
She married Richard A. Burt on April 3, 1958, in Topeka, Kan. They made their home on the Burt family farm in Saunders County near Leshara, where he was born. He died May 17, 1989. She moved into Fremont in 1989.
Survivors include: a sister-in-law, Ella Combs of South Sioux City; nieces and nephews and a special neighbor, Delores Cox. She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, three sisters and two brothers.
The Rev. Greg Hall will officiate Fridays service. Visitation will be 1-9 p.m. today and 9 a.m. until service time Friday, all at the mortuary. Burial will be in Pleasant View cemetery near Leshara.
Memorials are suggested to the American Cancer Society and the American Heart Association.

Joseph Divis
The funeral for Joseph A. Divis, 77, Algona, Iowa, was held Wednesday at Trinity Lutheran Church in Algona.
He died Saturday, Aug. 30, 2003, at Kossuth Regional Hospital in Algona.
Divis was born June 8, 1926, in rural Schuyler. He attended Immanuel Lutheran and Schuyler High School, graduating in 1944. He then served with the U.S. Navy in the South Pacific until being honorably discharged in 1946. Upon returning home, he farmed with his father for a time. He married Lorraine J. Riedel on Feb. 20, 1951, in Algona. They farmed in Nebraska until moving to a farm south of Livermore, Iowa, in 1957, and then to a farm north of Irvington in 1958. He worked for the ASCS office and also sold seed corn. They retired in 1990 but continued to live on the farm until moving into Algona in 1992. He stayed active after retirement, driving cars for Kemna Motors, mowing the lawn for Hjelmelands and helping on the farm.
He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, serving as elder, financial secretary, trustee and usher, and was a member of Lutheran Laymens League, a lifetime Veterans of Foreign Wars member, past president of Golden "K" Kiwanis Club, a member of the Pork Producers and a former member of Farm Bureau. He served on the Irvington Elevator Board and the Active Seniors Board.
Survivors include: his wife; two sons, Allen (and wife, Sharon) Divis of LuVerne, Iowa, and Gary (and wife, Angie) Divis of Algona; two daughters, Susan (Mrs. Carleton) Stoll of Bonourant, Iowa, and Lois (Mrs. John) Johnson of Winthrop, Iowa; six brothers, Lloyd Divis of Richland, Donald, Richard and Duane Divis, all of Fremont, Stanley Divis of Roswell, N.M., and Daniel Divis of Apache Junction, Ariz.; a sister, Shirley Henke of Columbus; nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by three brothers and a sister.
The Revs. Steve Turner and Patrick ONeal officiated. Burial was in East Lawn cemetery.
Wilson Funeral Homes in Algona was in charge of arrangements.

Merna Wilson
Merna J. Wilson, 68, of Ashland died Thursday, Sept. 4, 2003, in Ashland.
She was a lifelong Ashland resident. She retired from Farmers and Merchants National Bank in 1992.
She was an active member of First Christian Church, Matthews Chapter 242 Order of Eastern Star, a past member of Golden Manor Board, a volunteer at the Ashland Library and Ashland Care Center, and a Cub Scout Den Mother.
Survivors include: two sons, Jamie (and wife, Theresa) Wilson and Mark (and wife, Tammy) Vinson, all of Ashland; a daughter, Susan Stausing of Grapeland, Texas; a stepson, Neal (and wife, Janet) Wilson of Manchester, Conn.; a brother, Joe (and wife, Shirley) Dimmitt of Omaha; nine grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, William Wilson.
The funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at First Christian Church in Ashland. Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Sunday with an Eastern Star service at 7 p.m., all at Marcy Mortuary in Ashland. Visitation will continue one hour prior to service time at the church. Burial will be in Ashland cemetery.
Memorials have been established to the Ashland Library Building Fund, the American Juvenile Diabetes Research Fund and the American Alzheimers Association.
