Floyd 'Stu' Hissam, 77

(Feb. 7) DOUGLAS, Wyo. - Floyd "Stu" Hissam, 77, died Monday, Feb. 4, 2002, at Memorial Hospital of Converse County. He was born July 6, 1924 at Chester, W.Va. His parents were Floyd A. and Lela Firilla (Hart) Hissam.

He was raised and educated at Chester. He joined the U.S. Army and served on the K-9 Dog Corps. He was stationed in the Aleutian Islands, Fort Benning, Ga., and Fort Robinson. He married Jean Ruffing of Crawford Feb. 5, 1947, at Chester. He was the postmaster at Crawford and a horse wrangler and trail guide at Fort Robinson. He also was a part-time employee at Converse County Weed and Pest. He had been a member of the Crawford Volunteer Fire Department and the Lions Club, Boy Scout leader, sports referee, church choir director and on the Crawford School Board. He is survived by his wife Jean of Douglas; four children, Mark Hissam of Alliance, Mike Hissam of Douglas, Cathy Moody of Newark, Ohio, and Cheri Grant of Chadron; ten grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. He also is survived by two sisters, Roberta Harris of Mount Dora, Fla., and Viva Johnston of Oldsmar, Fla.

Mr. Hissam's funeral will be at 2 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 7, at Converse Funeral Chapel at Douglas, with Pastor Frank Wiederrecht of the First Baptist Church officiating. Memorials may be sent to the Stu Hissam Memorial Fund, Converse County Bank, P.O. Box 689, Douglas, WY 82633-0689.

Mahlin L. Johnson, 86

(Feb. 7) ALLIANCE - Mahlin Lloyd Johnson, 86, died Thursday, Feb. 6, 2003, at Highland Park Care Center. He was born in Sheridan County on June 8, 1916, to Foster and Minnie (Green) Johnson.

He stayed on the family home ranch until 1949 taking care of his mother and the ranch. On Dec. 9, 1951, he was married Helen (Wamsley) Moore at the Methodist Church at Gordon. They purchased a small farm south of Gordon and then in 1953 they moved south of Rushville to the Jake Herman Ranch where they lived for 21 years. In 1974 they moved into their home at Alliance where he lived until moving to Highland Park in 2002. While never having children of his own, he loved Helen's children and their families as his own. His survivors include his stepchildren, Betty Prentice Erny, Bruce and Sheila Moore, Bob and Amy Moore, and Doris and Clarence Coder; 21 grandchildren; and over 30 great-grandchildren. He also is survived by sister-in-law Opal Collins; nieces and nephews, Louise Brening, Helen Iossi, Bill Case, Tom Johnson, Blake Johnson, Gordon Johnson, Dennis Johnson and Marie Henson and their families. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife of 47 years Helen, brothers Hanford and Lafe Johnson, sister Hazel Case, step-children Colleen (Moore) Wordeman and Don Moore, grandson Steve Wordeman.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m., Tuesday, Feb. 11, at the United Methodist Church, with Rev. Jerry Mercer officiating. Burial will be in the Alliance Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday, Feb. 10. Memorials may be given to the United Methodist Church, Prairie Haven Hospice, Box Butte General Hospital Dialysis Unit or to a charity of the donor's choice. Bates-Gould Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mackay L. Worley, 73

(Feb. 7) BLOOMINGTON, Minn. - Mackay L. Worley, 73, died of cancer on Wednesday, Feb. 5, 2003, at his home. He was born at Alliance and attended Alliance High School.

He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. Upon his return from military service, he started Worley Diesel Service at Hemingford, where he worked until 1960, when he and his wife moved to Minnesota. He and his family returned to the Alliance area frequently for visits, where he enjoyed visiting his family and friends. He is survived by his wife Phyllis; and daughter Lynette. He also is al survived by his sister Suzanne Worley; sister-in-law Byrdeen Worley; aunt Katherine Barnes; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents Harvey and Helen Worley and brother Donald Worley.

Mr. Worley's funeral will be Tuesday, Feb. 11, at Richfield, Minn. Burial will be in Fort Snelling National Cemetery.

Wanda Mae Wieder, 78

(Feb. 8) DENVER - Wanda Mae Coursey-Wieder, 78, died Wednesday, Feb. 5, at Denver. She was born April 5, 1924.

She is survived by her husband, Jay Wieder; son Lee Wieder of Sidney, Neb.; daughters Kittie Sallee of Weatherford, Texas, Judi Lombardi of Lakewood, Colo., and Cyndi Croft of Denver; 10 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her son John Wieder of Newark, Ohio.

Mrs. Wieder's funeral will be at noon Tuesday at Horan & McConaty Family Chapel, 1091 S. Colorado Blvd., Denver. Burial will be in Ft. Logan National Cemetery, near Denver. Visitation will be from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. Monday at the chapel. Memorials may be made in memory of Wanda Wieder, c/o Grace United Methodist Church, 3201 E. Yale Ave., Denver, CO 80222.

Christopher James Mattley, 18

(Feb. 9) ALLIANCE - Christopher James Mattley, 18, passed away Wednesday, Febr. 7, 2001, at Box Butte General Hospital.

Funeral services will be Monday, Feb. 12, at 2 p.m. at the Calvary Assembly of God Church in Alliance. The Reverend Mike Schaaf will officiate. Burial will be in the Alliance Cemetery. Memorials may be sent in care of the family at 1247 Missouri Avenue, Alliance, NE 69301. They will donate it to Christopher's favorite charity.

He was born Sept. 11, 1982, in Omaha and he grew up in Alliance. Chris was a junior at Alliance High School where he had many friends. He enjoyed his job at Pizza Hut. Chris was a big wrestling fan and collected lots of wrestling figurines. He also loved country music as seen by his extensive music collection. He loved playing Nintendo and Playstation games as well as computer games. He also likes swimming and movies. He had a great love of life and everything in it. He always had a kind word, a smile and hug for everyone.

Chris will be tremendously missed by his parents, Dennis and Virginia Mattley of Alliance, sisters, Heather Mattley of Alliance, Kathy and Mike Smith of Gering, Wendy and Bill McBreen of Jacksonville, Fla., brother Tony Mattley of Omaha; nieces Tabitha Smith of Gering, and Sasha Mattley of Omaha, nephews, Adam and Brandon Smith of Gering, Steven and Benjamin McBreen of Jacksonville, FL, grandparents, Bill and Elfrieda Perry of Harlingen, TX, and Florence Mattley of Alliance, numerous aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.

He will be joining in Heaven his brother Michael, sister Angela, uncle Mick Mattley, and grandfather Stanley Mattley. Bates-Gould Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

D. James "Jim" Hollinrake, 70

(Feb. 9) HEMINGFORD - D. James "Jim" Hollinrake, age 70, died Wednesday, Feb. 7, 2001, at the Hemingford Community Care Center. He was born Oct. 24, 1930, to George and Mary Helen (Gasseling) Hollinrake on the William Hollinrake homestead thirteen miles north of Hemingford.

He served as a Sergeant during the Korean Conflict. Jim was a Lifetime Member and Past Commander of American Legion Post No. 9. On July 14, 1952 he married Matha Hansen at St. Bridget Catholic Church in Hemingford.

Survivors include his wife, Matha of the home, sons Steve and wife Jeannette of Columbus, Neb., Gary and wife Peggy of Hemingford, five grandchildren, Adam Hollinrake and Cody Hobza of Columbus, Jacob Hollinrake and Lyndsie Ullrich of Hemingford; Danny Heppner and great-grandchild Brooke of Gillette, Wyo., twin sister Joan and husband Harold Annen of American Falls, ID, sisters Margaret Cadigan of Seattle, Wash., Doris Hollinrake of Bothell, Wash., and sister-in-law, Mary E. Hollinrake of Hemingford.

His parents, brothers Harlan and Darold, and sisters Ruth Osborn and Mary Elizabeth preceded him in death.

Funeral services will be Monday, Feb. 12, 2001, at 10 a.m. at St. Bridget Catholic Church in Hemingford. Father Hugh Spanel officiating. A Wake Service will be Sunday, Feb. 11, 2001, at 7 p.m. at the Church. Burial will be in the Hemingford Cemetery with Military Graveside Rites. Memorials may be given to the Hemingford Community Care Center Van Fund or to St. Bridget Catholic Church Building Fund. Bates-Gould Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Lyle T. Stone, 78

(Feb. 10) ALLIANCE - Lyle T. Stone, 78, died Sunday, Feb. 9, 2003, at his home. He was born May 21, 1924 at Sloan, Iowa, to Thomas and Cecil (Whitlock) Stone.

He married Martha Schwaderer Sept. 21, 1947, at Alliance. He was a member of the St. John's United Lutheran Church and the Eagles. He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Elaine and Chuck Leisy of Alliance; son and daughter-in-law, Brad and Kathy Stone of Rochester, Wash.; grandchildren, Theresa Stone of Puyallup, Wash., and Daniel Stone of Bremerton, Wash. He also is survived by his sisters, Alberta Marsh of Lincoln, Etta Hudson of Billings, Mont., and Doris Kunzman of Albuquerque, N.M. He was preceded in death by is parents, his wife, and his brother.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m., Thursday, February 13, at St. John's United Lutheran Church, with Alice Shriver, PMA, officiating. Burial will be in the Alliance Cemetery. Memorials may be given to St. John's United Lutheran Church or to Prairie Haven Hospice. Bates-Gould Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Vern Chicoine, 89

(Feb. 10) CHADRON -Vernon P. Chicoine, 89, died Sunday, Feb. 9, 2003, at the Chadron Community Hospital. He was born Dec. 16, 1913, in Tripp County, S.D., but spent his youth in Cherry County.

He graduated from Valentine High School. Chicoine moved to Chadron in June, 1937, to work for his father, who had purchased the Ford agency. Four years later, Chicoine and his brother Roy bought the dealership. They soon added an implement business and purchased a ranch south of Chadron. In 1954, the brothers dissolved partnership with Vern taking over the ranch, which he substantially expanded before selling it in 1973. He married Bessie Holsworth shortly before they moved to Chadron. She died in 1969. He then married Frances Furman, who had ranching interests and was a well-known poet. After she died in 1997, he married Madge Fortune, and they built a new home at 702 East 10th Street. He was president of the Chadron Rotary Club and Chadron Chamber of Commerce in the late 1940s and was the Chadron mayor 1950-51. He received Chadron State College's Distinguished Service Award in 1994 and was named the Citizen of the Year by the Chadron Record in 2001. He was a businessman, rancher, civic leader, investor and philanthropist. He remained active in several organizations. In the past few years, he was a primary contributor toward construction of press boxes at the Chadron High School and Chadron State College football fields, improvements at the Chadron Arts Center and the bell tower to be constructed at the Museum of the Fur Trade. One of his largest contributions was for the construction of the atrium at the Mari Sandoz High Plains Heritage Center that is named for him and his wife, Madge Fortune Chicoine, at CSC. Last fall, the couple purchased a life-size bronze statue of Thomas Jefferson that is on permanent display in the atrium. He also established scholarships and an athletic endowment at Chadron State and was a major supporter of his church, Masonic and Shriner functions, 4-H and other youth activities. He had helped several young agricultural producers establish their herds. He was a member of the board of directors of the Chadron State Foundation for approximately 40 years. His contributions to the college exceeded $700,000. Survivors include his wife; brothers Bernard of Redding, Calif., and Ed of Lincoln; sister JoAnn Fitzpatrick of Fort Collins, Colo.; stepchildren Steve Furman of Clay Center, Susan Geister of Chadron, Tom Fortune of Lincoln, Vikki Anderson of Scottsdale, Ariz., and Tim Fortune of Bluemont, Va.; 14 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren.

Mr. Chicoine's funeral will be will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 13, at the United Methodist Church at Chadron. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery in Chadron. Chamberlain Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.

Charles A. Barrett, 87

(Feb. 11) GERING - Charles A. Barrett, 87, died Friday, Feb. 8, 2002, at the Heritage Health Care Center. He was born Nov. 16, 1914, at Mitchell. His parents were Elroy and Anna (Petersen) Barrett.

The family moved to a homestead south of Hawk Springs, Wyo., where he attended country school and graduated from Hawk Springs High School. He married Frances V. Rentfro March 13, 1945 at Bridgeport. He was an engineer with Burlington Northern Railroad for 43 years, retiring in 1979. The couple moved from Alliance to the Scottsbluff-Gering area in 1984. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church at Scottsbluff, and a lifetime member of Elks lodge No. 1367. He is survived by his wife Frances; daughter, Sharon Allen of Hershey; sons John Barrett of North Platte, and Bill Barrett and Steven Barrett of Denver, Colo.; grandchildren, Mitch Allen, Brenda Taylor, Ricky Barrett, Jason and Clint Barrett and Ryan and Jim Barrett; and great-grandchildren, Brent and Scott Taylor and Jessica Allen. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and two sisters.

Cremation was held at Sunset memorial Park Crematory. No services will be held. Dugan-Kramer Funeral Chapel of Scottsbluff is in charge of arrangements.

Verna Olds, 85

(Feb. 12) GORDON - Verna Olds, 85, of Gordon died Saturday, Feb. 10, 2001, at Gordon Memorial Hospital. She was born Aug. 14, 1915, at Newman Grove, Neb. Her parents were Casper and Lucy (Neuman) Johnson.

She was married to Lester Olds on Aug. 24, 1934, at Hot Springs, S.D. Mr. Olds preceded her in death.

She was a clerk for Fitch Insurance, Jack & Judy's Ben Franklin, J.C. Penney's and The Mode o' Day, all at Gordon. She was a member of United Methodist Church of Gordon, American Legion Auxiliary and Sheridan County RSVP.

She is survived by her daughter, Kathryn Johnson of Gordon; four grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. She also is survived by five brothers and one sister.

Mrs. Olds' funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 14, at United Methodist Church of Gordon, with Rev. Nita Gelling-Cloran officiating. Burial will be in Gordon Cemetery. Memorials may be made, in care of Community First National Bank, P.O. Box 250, Gordon, NE 69343. Cicmanec-Pier Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements.

Gaylord F. "Gail" Howard

(Feb. 12) SALEM, Ore. - Gaylord F. "Gail" Howard, 76, of Salem, Ore., died Saturday, Jan. 13, 2001. He was born Feb. 24, 1924, at Axtell, Kan.

He grew up in Alliance, Neb., and graduated from Alliance High School in 1942. He served in the U.S. Navy, and then earned a B.A. degree from Willamette University. He founded Bruce & Dana, Inc., and had been semi-retired since 1992. He was a founding member of the United Methodist Church in Salem.

He is survived by his wife, Neta; son Dana Howard of Salem; three grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. He also is survived by three sisters, Eva Walburg of Hot Springs, Ark., Alphadine Freitag of Scio, Ore., and Darlene Williamson of Salem; and his brother, Robert Howard of Captrino, Calif. Burial was in Belcrest Memorial Park at Salem.
