L. P. "Pete" Mitchell

L. P. "Pete" Mitchell, 85, died Thursday afternoon at Arbor Manor Living Center.
L.P. (Pete) Mitchell was born July 28, 1920 in Sutton, Nebraska. His parents were Smith and Ada Mitchell. He graduated from Sutton High School in 1937, received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Doane College, 1949 and a Master of Science degree from the University of Omaha, 1958.
He married Maxine MacDonald on May 28, 1950 in Sutton. They have one son, Jay Scott Mitchell of Norfolk, Virginia.
Immediately after graduating from high school, he joined the Civilian Conservation Corps, and later worked at the Martin Bomber Plant in Bellevue. In 1941 he enlisted in the U.S. Navy where he served four years during WWII as an airplane mechanic. He served aboard the aircraft carrier USS Sangamon in the South Pacific in combat near Iwo Jima, Okinawa, Guadalcanal, Guam, New Caledonia, the Marshall Islands, the Philippines and others until his carrier was crippled by a kamikaze attack on May 4, 1945.
He taught at Chester High School, Chester, Nebraska from 1949 to 1953, and at Fremont High School from 1953 to 1966 during which time he set up their guidance program and served many years as chairman of the American Field Service. From 1966 on he taught sociology at Midland Lutheran College, later becoming Registrar there, retiring in 1985. He also taught at Creighton University for several summers.
During his retirement years he was active in the arts community, having had showings of his whimsical sculpture locally and statewide. He was a member of the Fremont Area Art Association, serving on its board for several years. He also was chairman of the American Crafts Council, North Central Region, 1973, 1974.
He is survived by his wife, Maxine, son Jay, brother Carroll Mitchell and wife Dyllis of Lincoln, sister-in-law Thelma Mitchell of Garner, Iowa, brother-in-law W.V. (Bud) Markin of Lincoln, nieces and nephews.
Burial will be in the Sutton, NE, cemetery.
Memorials can be given to Midland Lutheran College or the Fremont Area Art Association.
Funeral Services Monday, May 1 at 10:00 AM at Lattin-Dugan-Chambers Chapel. Visitation Sunday, April 30 from 3:00 to 8:00 with family present from 4 pm to 6 pm.

Bernice M. Evans

Bernice Marie Evans, 88, died Sunday, June 11, 2006 at Pioneer Ridge Retirement Community in Lawrence, Kan. Born Oct. 7, 1917, at Brock, Neb., she was the daughter of Anna (Hahn) and Martin Neddenriep. She attended Brock public schools, Peru State Teachers College, Peru, Neb., and taught for several years. She married Fred J. (Bud) Evans Jr. on Aug. 8, 1942 at Johnson, Neb. They lived in Schubert and Talmage, Neb. before moving to Fremont, Neb. in 1959. Mr. Evans died Jan. 17, 1986. Mrs. Evans, a member of First Lutheran Church, was a charter member of Chapter GH, P.E.O., Fremont, and an avid bridge player. In 1997, she moved to Lawrence, where she was an associate member of Trinity Lutheran Church. Survivors include two daughters: Carol (and husband, Erland) Crupper, Lawrence, and Julie (and husband, Doug) Krenz, Montgomery, Texas; seven grandchildren: Eddie (and wife, Jill) Crupper, Neosho, Mo., Emily Crupper (and Woody Bengoa), Santa Monica, Calif.; Katie (and husband, Sean) Reedy, Fort Worth, Texas, Dan Krenz, San Antonio, Texas, Robbie Krenz, College Station, Texas; Keilka Salsbury-Miller (and husband, Dan), Buffalo, N.Y., and Mandi (and husband, Bobby) Avery, Syracuse, N.Y. Seven great-grandchildren also survive: Easton and Hannah Crupper, Neosho; Axel Bengoa, Santa Monica; Gavin and Martha Salsbury-Miller, Buffalo; and Owen and Laura Avery, Syracuse. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Janet Salsbury; three brothers, Glen Neddenriep, Dale Neddenriep, and Vernon Neddenriep; and a sister, Helen Govig. Memorial services will be Monday June 19, at 11:00 A.M. at First Lutheran Church. Rev. Delmar Wiemers officiating. No visitation. Interment will be in Memorial cemetery. Memorials have been established for visitation ministries at First Lutheran Church in Fremont or Trinity Lutheran, Lawrence, Kansas.

Georgia Sara Shelso

Georgia S. Shelso, 98, of Fremont died Monday, April 17 at Nye Pointe Health & Rehap Center. She was born June 3, 1907 in Perham, Minnisota. She was raised there and graduated from Perham High School in 1925. She attended the University of Minnisota at Duluth. She began working for Dayton's Department Store in the accounting department and worked for 25 years before retiring. She married Howard Shelso in 1931 in Minneapolis, Minnisota. He preceded her in death in 1988. She moved to Fremont in 1988 and was one of the initial residents of Nye Square. Also preceded in death by her parents, Theodore and Mattie Bangle. Survived by: Son - David Shelso of Fremont; Daughter-in-law - Florence Shelso of Omaha Special Friend - LeEtta Murphy of Fremont 2 grandchildren 5 great grandchildren Memorial Services will be Saturday, June 3, 2006 in St. Lukes Chapel, at St. James Epsicopal Church at 10:30AM. Karen L. Dill

Karen L. Dill, 57
Fremont - Died at Nebraska University Medical Center in Omaha Monday morning.
She was born September 1, 1948 in Blair, Nebraska and was raised in Wakefield graduating from Wakefield High School in 1966. She graduated from the Norfolk Beauty College and then lived in Germany from 1968 to 1970. In 1970 Karen moved to Fremont and worked for Alberta's Beauty Salon for three years before she and a partner opened Velvet Touch Beauty Salon. She operated Velvet Touch for thirty years and then worked for Hair Design.
Karen Beaty married William Dill July 21, 1968 in Wakefield.
She was a member of the Congregational Church UCC, TOPS, and Fairacres Bowling League.

1 son-Toby of Fremont
Mother-Adeline Morrison Beaty of Wakefield, Nebraska

She was preceded in death by her Father, Charles (Roy) Beaty and two Brothers, Wayne and Albert Beaty.
Services will be Thursday at 10:00 A.M. at the Congregational Church. Pastor Teri Akkerman officiating. Closed Casket visitation will be Wednesday from 3:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. with the family present from 6:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. There has been a memorial established to the Make a Wish Foundation. Patsy R. Brandt, 81
Fremont - Died at her home on Saturday.
She was born May 20, 1934 at Pierce, Nebraska where she was raised moving to Norfolk in 1950. She married Darwin Brandt in 1954 and moved to Columbus coming to Fremont in 1959.
Survived by:
1 Daughter-Linda Studer (husband David) of San Jacinto, California
1 sister-Virginia Mottin (husband Clyde) of Ravenna, Nebraska
5 grandchildren 3 great grandchildren

Carol Ecklund
Carol Karloff Ecklund, 71, of Mead died Thursday, October 7, 2004, in Fremont.
She was born March 17, 1933, in Wahoo to Herbert and Eleanor (Starmann) Karloff. She graduated high school in 1950 from Yutan Public Schools. She received her teaching certificate at Midland Lutheran College in Fremont and then taught country school in the Saunders County area for three years.
She also was a Sunday school and Bible school teacher, as well as founder of the Mead Classie Lassies 4-H Club. She later received her associate degree in interior design from Metropolitan Community College in 1982. She was a member of St. Johns Lutheran Church, served as secretary of the WELCA organization, as well as serving on multiple projects and committees.
Survivors include: her husband, Burneil Ecklund of Mead; a son, Mark (and wife, Lissa) Ecklund of Bellevue; two daughters, Nancy (Mrs. Mark) Poeschl of Brookville, Ohio, and Beth (Mrs. Joseph) Rohan of Omaha; a sister, Janet (Mrs. Gayle) Behrens of Mead; a brother, James (Mrs. Helen) Karloff of Hastings; eight grandchildren and a great-grandchild.
The funeral will be 10 a.m. Monday at St. Johns Lutheran Church in Yutan. Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Sunday at the Pruss-Nabity Funeral Home in Wahoo. Burial will be in Sunrise cemetery in Wahoo.
A memorial has been established to the church.

88, Lincoln, widow of Donald, died Wednesday (2/2/2005). Born, Leavenworth, Kan. (5/31/16), to James and Libby (Wyrich) Shaughnessy. Homemaker. Member of Grace United Methodist Church, O.E.S Lincoln Chapter 148, Naphis Temple 66 Daughters of the Nile and American Legion Auxiliary.
Visitation: From 2-6 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. - 6 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
Service: 10:30 a.m. Monday, (2/7/05) at Metcalf Funeral Home Chapel, 245 N. 27th Street, with The Rev. Dean Joy.

Member, Immanuel Lutheran Church; VFW Auxiliary, Wahoo; Military Order of Cooties, Lincoln; American Legion Auxiliary, Ceresco; 40 & 8 Auxiliary, Lincoln; Fraternal Order of Eagles Auxiliary, Wahoo; Norden Club, Lincoln. Soloist/musician of state and national VFW Auxiliary, State and Supreme Military Order of Cooties Auxiliary and American Legion Auxiliary State.
Visitation: 2-9 p.m. Wednesday, at Nelson Funeral Home in Ceresco.
Service: 10:30 a.m. Thursday, (7/8/04) at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Ceresco.
Family Gathering: Family will greet friends from 7-9 p.m. Wednesday at Nelson Funeral Home.
