(March 3) MARSLAND - Donald Keal Rising, 73, died Wednesday, Feb. 26, 2003. He was born July 27, 1929, at Crawford. His parents were Ercil and Earl Rising.

He spent his childhood in Glen, Neb., where he and attended elementary and high school. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1948, and was assigned to the First Cavalry, Third Division, A Company. He spent his 21st birthday on a transport ship headed for combat in Korea. Eight days later, his squad was fighting on the front lines. When he was honorably discharged in 1952, he had attained the rank of Staff Sergeant. He was one of eight soldiers out of the 142-man company that had landed in Puchon who survived the war. It always irritated him when the press reported Korea as a "police action." He said the men who fought and died over there "knew darn well it was a war." He married Velma Callahan on Jan. 2, 1954. They were the parents of five children: Donna, Dixie, Rhonda, Kasey and Roxanne. He worked as a ranch hand for several ranches in western Nebraska before purchasing a ranch on the outskirts of Marsland, Neb., where he died. He said he had never wanted to do anything in life but ride a good horse over a good piece of land. He competed in steer wrestling and team roping rodeo events, and was a pickup man for 30 years. He held the steer wrestling record of 3.5 seconds at the Crawford Rodeo for nearly 20 years, and qualified for the National Old Timers Rodeo in team roping. He took great pride in helping several young men get started in steer-wrestling, including his nephews and all four grandsons. He always had time to saddle a horse and lead a child around the corral so they could have their first experience "ahorseback." His 3-year-old grandson said he wasn't scared to ride a horse because his Granddad taught him how. Everyone agreed that he was one of the last old-time cowboys, and he was proud of that designation.

He is survived by wife, Velma, of Marsland; his daughters: Donna and her husband, Roy Norgard, of Crawford. He is also survived by nine grandchildren and five great-grandchildren: Craig Norgard, and Scott Norgard and his son, Brady of Crawford; Laura (Norgard) and her husband, John Howell of Lutz, Florida and their children, Jaelin and Jack; Jamie and Christy Burke of Alliance; Toni (Pelton) and her husband, Bubba Hladky, of Gillette, Wyo. And their sons, Trey and Luke; Casey Pelton of Gillette, Wyo.; R.J. Pelton and his wife Erin of Crawford; and Kayla Pelton of Crawford. He is additionally survived by his sister, Doris Hamaker, of Crawford; and by his brothers: Wilbur Rising of Harrison; and Marvin Rising and his wife, Ruby, of Crawford, and by his sister-in-law, Ila Buckley, of Crawford. The list of friends and family that will keep Keal in their hearts throughout their lifetimes are too many to list in the confines of a dozen newspapers. He was preceded in death by his parents; two children, Kasey and Roxanne; his brother John; and sister Eva.

Mr. Rising's memorial service was Saturday, March 1, at Crawford Community Hall. His ashes will be interred in the Marsland cemetery with his children. Memorials may be made to Hospice and a yet-undesignated charity. Chamberlain Chapel of Crawford was in charge of arrangements.
