LaVon Dean Burtis
LaVon Dean Burtis was born in northwest Chase County on April 25, 1925 to George and Neva Kimberling Burtis.
He attended grade school at District 6 and one year at CCHS.
He was the oldest boy of seven children and returned to help on the farm.
Dean served in the U.S. Army from Sept. 15, 1944 to Dec. 3, 1946. He was in the 382nd Infantry Regiment as a machine gunner and served one year and seven months overseas where he was wounded in Okinawa.
He qualified for many awards some included the Pacific Campaign Award, Ribbon Bronze Star, Purple Heart, World War II Victory Medal, Philippine Liberation, Philippine Independence Ribbon and the Presidential Unit Citation for Extraordinary Heroism to the 96th Infantry Division.
He was a lifetime member of the Deadeye 96th Division WWII Association and attended several of their reunions.
The VA presented him his CCHS diploma Nov. 11, 1999. This was in honor of those who were called and served in WWII.
Dean and Roma Jean Harris were married Jan. 10, 1948 at the United Methodist Church at Imperial. They celebrated their 57th anniversary. To this union one son LaVern Gene Burtis and one daughter Sylvia Jo were born.
They lived in Grant for five years where Dean had employment with the Co-op. In 1953 they moved to the farm 17 miles northwest of Imperial where he was involved in farming and operated a cow-calf and hog operation.
Dean was a Dekalb seed corn salesman and did electrical work in his spare time.
He retired and moved to Imperial in 2001.
Dean was baptized at the Champion Lake and became a member of the Chase EUB Church in 1937. He transferred to the Grant Methodist Church and later joined the United Methodist Church in Imperial where his commitments and priorities have been. His fellowship in the church was special to him.
Dean was a lifetime member of the VFW which he served a term as commander and also was on the extension board; was chairman of the 4-H Council and organized a 4-H club in our community. He was an active fair board member, served on the District 6 school board, was elected to the Frenchman Valley Co-op Board as well as ASC committee and was a Lions Club member.
He did some woodwork as a hobby and was involved in several carpenter jobs.
He belonged to the CC Stompers Square Dance and enjoyed dancing. Dean learned to play golf after retirement and enjoyed the Senior League at Imperial Country Club. He enjoyed playing pitch with friends.
Dean Burtis passed away Sunday, Oct. 2, 2005, at the Chase County Community Hospital in Imperial. He was 80 years old.
Dean was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Robert and Hubert Burtis, brothers-in-law Charles Read and Roland Taylor, sister-in-law Maxine Burtis and son-in-law Joel Smith.
Dean is survived by his loving wife Roma Jean of Imperial; a son LaVern Gene Burtis and wife Carolyn of Oberlin, Kan.; a daughter Sylvia Jo Smith of Auburn; four grandchildren Troy Burtis of Nashville, Tenn. and Matthew, Nicole and Meredith Smith of Auburn; three step grandchildren; two sisters Elva Read of Limon, Colo. and Leona Taylor of Sheridan, Wyo.; two brothers Donald of Sheridan, Wyo. and Ralph and wife Lucille of Tracy, Calif.; one sister-in-law Dona June Ekart and husband Jack; many nieces, nephews and friends.
Family and friends join the Burtis family in sharing the loss of their loved one.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, Oct. 5, 2005 at 2 p.m. at the United Methodist Church in Imperial, Neb. with Pastor Kay Alnor officiating.
Pianist was Mrs. Marcia Bauerle and soloists were Irvin and Garneta Bauerle.
Casketbearers were John Osler, Stanley Smith, Merlin Castle, Jack Claney, Larry Schilke and Orville Kunnemann.
Military rites were by the VFW Post #4688, Imperial.
Interment was at Mount Hope cemetery, Imperial, Neb.
Liewer Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

George 'Bill' Colton
George W. (Bill) Colton passed away in his sleep Saturday, Sept. 17, 2005, in Cottonwood, Ariz. surrounded by his family.
He was born in Easton, Pa. June 5, 1925 to George W. and Ruah H. (Fenn) Colton.
After high school Bill entered the Army where he served with the 104th Infantry Division during WWII and was a recipient of the Bronze Star.
After the war he entered Yale University graduating with a degree in geology.
He worked 28 years with the United States Geological Survey and 16 years for the Arkansas Geological Commission retiring in 1997.
He and Jane Miskimen were married on April 9, 1952 in New Philadelphia, Ohio.
He is preceded in death by his parents and an infant son.
He is survived by his wife, Jane; 11 children, Jim (Jan) of Cottage Grove, Ore., Ted (Becky) of Flagstaff, Ariz., Doug of Cottonwood, Ariz., Jenny Miller (Kurt) of El Paso, Texas, Kathy Branscum (Rusty) of Batesville, Ark., Matt of Flagstaff, Ariz., Charley (Carla) of Imperial, Neb., Tom (Debby) of Rialto, Calif., Karla Rollins (Jon) of Rancho Cucamonga, Calif., Dwight (Heather) of San Jose, Calif. and Holly Seeders (Mike) of Glendale, Ariz.; 27 grandchildren and six great grandchildren; two brothers, Edward (Merna) Colton and Buster (Kaye) Colton and many nieces and nephews.
Bill was a loving and strong father and grandfather and will be missed deeply.

Marie Dettman
Marie Katherine Dettman was born on Nov. 9, 1903, at Chester, Neb. to Charles O. and Minnie J. (Morris) Briels.
Marie's mother died when Marie was very young and she was taken to Fleming, Colo. to live with relatives. She grew up and attended school in Fleming, graduating from Fleming High School in 1921.
On May 28 of that same year, Marie married Fred Clinton Chamberlain in Fleming and to this union two children were born: a daughter, Roma June and a son, Ward C.
She attended Sterling College in 1923 and obtained a teaching certificate in which she used in Fleming, teaching second grade for several years.
Marie later moved to Imperial, Neb., where she was employed by the Telephone Company, as an operator, a position she held for many years. She married Elmer Christopher Dettman in 1944, and the couple made their home in Imperial until retirement.
Marie passed away early Friday morning, Sept. 23, 2005, at the Heritage of Wauneta Nursing Home, in Wauneta, Neb. She was 101 years of age.
Marie was a member of the United Methodist Church of Imperial. She had many hobbies including crocheting for family members, cooking and she especially loved to visit and play bridge.
Survivors include son Ward Chamberlain and wife Zella of Littleton, Colo.; three grandchildren, Kathy Erzinger and husband Frank of Houston, Texas, Vicky Pettit and husband Don of Littleton, Colo., Scott Chamberlain and wife Lou Anne of Littleton, Colo.; seven great grandchildren, Alison, Stephanie, Scott and Steve Erzinger, Jeff, Lisa and Brian Chamberlain.
Marie was preceded in death by her parents, husband Elm, daughter Roma June, brother Charles Briels and sister Leona Burns.
Graveside services were held Tuesday, Sept. 27, 2005 at 2 p.m. at Mount Hope cemetery, Imperial with Pastor Kay Alnor officiating.
Soloist was Lisa Chamberlain.
Honorary casketbearers were Scott Erzinger, Jeffrey Chamberlain, Steven Erzinger and Brian Chamberlain.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established to the Imperial Public Library.
Liewer Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Alyce Arterburn
Alyce Arterburn, age 80, of Imperial passed away Tuesday, Sept. 27, 2005, at the Chase County Community Hospital in Imperial.
Services will be held Monday, Oct. 3, 2005, 10:30 a.m. at the United Methodist Church in Imperial.

Gerald 'Gary' Larreau
Gerald "Gary" D. Larreau, age 69, of Wauneta, Neb. died at the Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney, Neb. on Sept. 21, 2005.
He was born on March 14, 1936 in Oberlin, Kan. to Charles and Ruby Larreau.
Gary attended school in Oberlin and McCook.
On July 30, 1953 he was united in marriage to LaDonna Kincaid. They survived 52 years together.
Gary became an apprentice bricklayer in the mid 50's continuing the profession all his life. He enjoyed buying selling and trading any kind of vehicle, especially Dodges. He was an avid story teller.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a daughter Carol Larreau Brown and a granddaughter Shannon Marie; three brothers: French, Smiley and Dick; a sister; Ginni Speaker.
Gary is survived by his wife, LaDonna; three sons, Mark and wife Chris Larreau of Hastings, Joe of Texas and Brian of California; son-in-law Bob Brown; four grandchildren, Kristy, April, Adam and Shasha, all of Valentine; a sister, Gloria and husband Roger Messenger of McCook. Gary was loved by a host of nieces and nephews and cousins and will be missed by all.
Services were held at the Lockenour-Jones Mortuary in Cambridge on Saturday, Sept. 24 at 2 p.m. with Pastor Richard Karr.
Organist was Jackie Johnson.
Casketbearers were Lance Messenger, Craig Messenger, Shawn Yoder, Doug Highland, Dace Collins and Dave Gallington.
Interment was in the Fairview cemetery, Cambridge.
Memorials may be left at the mortuary in Gary's name.

Douglas F. Pawloski
Former Hastings resident, Douglas F. Pawloski, 66, of Wahoo, Neb., died Monday, Sept. 12, 2005 at Madonna Rehabilitation Hospital, Lincoln, Neb.
Mr. Pawloski was born Oct. 28, 1938 in Hastings, Neb. to Donald M. and Lorraine E. (Pierce) Pawloski.
He graduated from St. Cecilia's High School.
He worked for the Hastings Daily Tribune as circulation manager and then managed his father's sign company.
He later lived in Texas before moving to Wahoo, Neb.
Vigil service was held Sunday, Sept. 18, 2005, 7 p.m. at Butler-Volland Chapel, Hastings, Neb. Mass of Christian Burial was Monday, Sept. 19, 2005, 11 a.m. at St. Michael's Catholic Church, with Father Greg Pawloski officiating.
Burial was held in Parkview cemetery, Hastings, Neb.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Patrick.
Survivors include brothers and sisters-in-law, Father Greg Pawloski of Imperial, Neb., Michael and Cheryl Pawloski of Omaha, Neb., David and Cynthia Pawloski of Omaha, Neb.; sisters and brothers-in-law, Dona and Kay DeNeal of Las Vegas, Nev., Janet and Dick Hyde of Omaha, Neb., Judy and Gary Prevette of Hastings, Neb., Mary and Gene Kohtz of Hastings, Neb., Pam and Felix Aldana of Hastings, Neb., Terri and Jack Willmes of Scottsbluff, Neb.; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Memorials may be made to the family.

Herbert 'Hoot' Minick
Herbert Taft Minick was born on Jan. 15, 1909, at Pawnee, Okla. to John W. and Etta F. (Frost) Minick.
The family moved to Nebraska City, Neb., that same year, where they resided for a short time before moving to Dunbar, Neb.
In the fall of 1917, the family moved to a farm south of Champion, Neb.
In the spring of 1920, Hoot, moved with his parents back to southeast Nebraska, near Cook, where he attended school graduating from Cook High School, in 1927.
Hoot moved again with his parents in 1930, back to Champion, where he was engaged in farming, paint contracting and working as a musician.
He enlisted in the Navy C.B.'s in 1942 and served in the Pacific during WWII. Hoot was discharged in November of 1945 and returned to the Champion area, where he continued to farm and by passing his Nebraska State Barber Board Examination, worked as a barber owning his own shop. During this time, Hoot, also became a licensed pilot and purchased the first spray equipment in Chase County.
On Oct. 1, 1947, Hoot married Edith O. (Baldwin) Taylor, in Imperial and the couple settled in Champion before moving to Imperial in 1966.
Hoot and Edith moved to Enid, Okla. in 1970 where Hoot dabbled in real estate but was mostly retired. The couple then returned to Imperial in 1991, where they have made their home since.
Hoot passed away Tuesday morning, Sept. 20, 2005, at the Chase County Community Hospital. He was 96 years of age.
Hoot was a member of the United Methodist Church of Imperial, was a charter member of VFW Post #4688, serving as a commander. He also served as commander of District 5.
He loved music playing the piano, sax, clarinet, trumpet, banjo and drums. He was also the orchestra and choir director for the senior citizens center.
He served as a State Barber Inspector for two years.
Hoot was preceded in death by his parents, four sisters Anna, Grace, Esther and Letita and brother Robert.
Survivors include wife Edith of Imperial, Neb.; local niece Jean Johnson and husband Richard of Imperial, Neb.; nephew Ray Baldwin and wife Doris of Hudson, Colo.; four step grandchildren; two step great grandchildren and one step great, great grandchild.
Memorial services will be announced at a later date.
Liewer Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
