H. Irene Bay, 80

(March 4) STAPLETON - H. Irene Bay, 80, died Saturday, March 2, 2002, at Melham Medical Center at Broken Bow. She was born Jan. 6, 1922, at Arnold. Her parents were Fayette Solomon and Nancy Bell (Johnson) Long.

She graduated from Arnold High School in 1940. She was married to Raleigh Rollin "Tuffy" Bay on Nov. 14, 1941, at North Platte. He preceded her in death. They farmed on the Garfield Table for 40 years and retired to North Platte. She was a member of the Presbyterian Church. She is survived by one daughter, Wilma Schaffert of Alliance; one son, Riley Bay of Arnold; four grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and two step-great-grandchildren. She also is survived by one sister, Marjorie Weinman of Arnold.

Mrs. Bay's funeral will be at 2 p.m., Friday, March 8, at the Presbyterian Church at Stapleton, with Rev. Gene Purcell officiating. Burial will be in the McCain Cemetery southeast of Stapleton. Visitation will be from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m., Thursday, March 7, at the funeral home, and from 11 a.m. to service time, Friday, March 8, at the church.. A memorial has been established to the Presbyterian Church at Stapleton. Arnold Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Lorene Cullan, 87

(March 4) HEMINGFORD - Lorene Cullan, 87, died March 3, 2002, at Hutchinson, Kan. She was a wife, mother and friend to all who knew her. She was born Dec. 31, 1914, in rural Dade County, Mo., to James and Nora Burney.

On September 29, 1932, she was married to Harry Cullan. Her parents, brothers Rudy and Cyril and an infant daughter preceded her in death. She was a member of St. Bridget Catholic Church, Altar Society and D.C.C.W. She is survived by her husband Harry; children and spouses, Tom and Loretta Cullan of Hemingford, Dave and Vickie Cullan of Omaha, Doug and Marti Cullan of Hemingford, Pat and Jackie Cullan of Chadron, Dan and Mary Cullan of Omaha, Larry Cullan of Phoenix, Ariz., Mary Ann and Al Litzau of Fort Collins, Colo., Gene and Pam Cullan of Phoenix, Ariz., George and Patty Cullan of Hutchinson, Kan., Sam Cullan of Kansas City, Mo., Virginia Cullan of Overland Park, Kan., Steve and Terry Cullan of Hemingford; 34 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren and many nieces, nephews and friends.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m., Friday, March 8, at St. Bridget Catholic Church in Hemingford, with Fr. Bryan Ernest officiating. Burial will be in the Hemingford Cemetery. Wake services will be at 7 p.m., Thursday, March 7, at St. Bridget Church. Memorials may be given to Hemingford Volunteer Firefighters Association, St. Agnes Academy or to a charity of the donor's choice. Bates-Gould Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Marion Alleen Sloer, 79

(Mar. 5) GORDON - Marion Alleen Sloyer, 79, a lifelong resident of the Gordon and Rushville communities, died Thursday, March 1, 2001, at the Rapid City Regional Hospital. She was born Jan. 13, 1922, at Rushville, Neb.

Her parents were Otto and Minnie (Higgins) Barth. She was married to Gordon Sloyer Feb. 24, 1946, at Gordon. Mr. Sloyer preceded her in death. The couple owned and operated the city bakery in Gordon. She was a member of Grace Lutheran Church at Gordon.

She is survived by four daughters, Wenda Coon of Gordon, Becky Diercks of Minden, Joni Hupp of Rapid City, S.D., and Leora Likens of St. Louis. Mo; nine grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. She also is survived by one sister, Margaret Hoffman of Gordon.

Mrs. Sloyer's funeral will be at 10 a.m., Tuesday, March 6, at Grace Lutheran Church in Gordon, with Vicar Scott Shields officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery at Rushville. Memorials may be made to Grace Lutheran Church, 801 N. Elm St., Gordon, NE 69343. Cicmanek-Pier Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements.

Thomas G. Annett, 85

(Mar. 5) GORDON - Thomas G. Annett, 85, a lifelong resident of the Gordon area, died Saturday, March 3, 2001, at Gordon Countryside Care. He was born April 25, 1915, at Gordon. His parents were William and Nelle (Brewer) Annett.

He attended Kemper Military Academy, and spent some time in California. He worked for L.B. Mayer and appeared in several movies. He married Nadine Helmbold, and ranched near Gordon for many years. He was a veteran of World War II. He was a member of the Masons.

He is survived by his wife Nadine; two sons, Don Annett and David Annett; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Mr. Annett's funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, March 7, at Cicmanec-Pier Funeral Chapel in Gordon, with Pastor Rodney Long of the Seventh Day Adventist Church officiating. Cremation will follow. Memorials may be made t the Gordon Library, 101 West Fifth St., Gordon, NE 69343. Cicmanec-Pier Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements.

Erma D. Roller, 76

(Mar. 5) ALLIANCE - Erma D. Roller, 76, died Sunday, March 4, 2001, at Good Samaritan Health Care Center in Alliance. She was born Jan. 2, 1925, at Pittsburg, Mo., to Samuel and Gladys (Houser) Waldren.

Her family moved to Ventura, Calif., in her infancy. She was married to Charles Roller. Following her husband's death in WWII, she married Robert P. Roller on Aug. 9, 1945, in Mesa, Ariz. They moved to Ardmore, S.D., and operated their ranch from 1949 until their retirement in 1979, when they moved to Alliance.

Her survivors are her daughters and son-in-law, Barbara and Jim Cornette of Alliance, Marcia and Mike Nuss of Lincoln, Lois and Gary Redden of Edgemont, S.D., and son and daughter-in-law, Richard and Sharon Roller of Riverton, Wyo., 9 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband Charles and their son, Donald, husband, Robert, one sister and one brother. She was active as a volunteer for the Retires Senior Volunteer Program and at Good Samaritan Village.

Memorial services will be Friday, March 9 at 9:30 a.m. at the Bates-Gould Chapel. The Reverend Dan Floyd will officiate. Burial willbe in Black Hills National Cemetery at Sturgis, S.D. Memorials may be given to Good Samaritan Health Care Center or to Senior Citizens Nutrition Center. Bates-Gould Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Velma A. Weber, 79

(March 5) MISSOULA, Mont. - On March 2, 2003, Jesus took Velma Weber by the hand and ushered her into heaven. She was at her daughter's home, in Missoula, Mont., surrounded by family. She was born February 13, 1924, in Genoa, Colorado, the daughter of Clarence and Alma Steggs.

She graduated from high school in Alliance, Neb. and went on to attend nurses training at St. Joseph Nursing School in Alliance, where she served as a Cadet Nurse. She was also certified as an American Red Cross Nurse. She married Charles Weber in Alliance on January 5, 1947. Velma worked as a registered nurse for over 30 years in various aspects of nursing. As her husband worked for the railroad, the family moved frequently, and her nursing career included work in Alliance, Ravenna, and Lincoln, Neb., Edgemont, S.D.; Vancouver, Wash.; Mt. Pleasant, Iowa; and finally retiring to Missoula. She was a Past Worthy Matron with the Order of Eastern Star, was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, VFW Auxiliary, Eagle's Auxiliary and Burlington Northern Veterans, was involved in various Bible Studies and Discipleship Classes, United Methodist Church. She enjoyed collecting family history, genealogy, working with scrapbooks and photos and loved spending time with family, friends and loved ones. She especially enjoyed her grandchildren and attending their various activities. She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband. Her family includes sons, Ken Weber and his wife Susie of Avoca, Iowa; Lanny Weber and wife Nancy of Tualatin, Ore.; daughters, Kathryn Lobry and husband Robert, of Vancouver, Wash.; Sharon Sagehorn and husband Dave of Nickerson, Neb.; Linda Dameron and husband Robert of Missoula; 13 grandchildren; 5 great-grandchildren; brothers Cleo Steggs and wife Deloris, and Harold Steggs and wife Idelle of Alliance; Melvin Steggs and wife Lois of York, Neb. and numerous nephew and nieces.

Viewing will be at Bates-Gould Funeral Home in Alliance on Thursday, March 6, with the family present from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Friday, March 7, at the United Methodist Church with the Reverend Jerry Mercer officiating. Burial will be in the Alliance Cemetery. Memorial Services will be held in Missoula, at the Garden City Funeral Home at 10 a.m. Saturday, March 15. The family suggests that memorials be made to the Memorial Fund, c/o Bitterroot Valley Bank, Highway 93S, Lolo, MT 59847.

Alta Louise H. Boyer, 95

(March 5) MULLEN - Alta Louise Huddle Boyer, 95, former Alliance resident, died Jan. 22, 2003, in Henderson, Nev. She was born March 17, 1907, to Charles and Addie Huddle of Mullen.

She was married for 74 years to Wilson Boyer, also of Mullen. They lived many years in Alliance and their children all attended Alliance schools. She is survived by daughters, Colleen Bennett of Atlanta, Ga., and Carol Bruso of Henderson, Nev.; four grandchildren; and seven great grandchildren. She also is survived by her brother, Dale Huddle of Myrtle, Mo. She was preceded in death by her husband, Wilson; both sons, three brothers and three grandchildren.

Mrs. Boyer's funeral was Jan. 31 at the Sandhills Community Bible Church Burial was in Cedarview Cemetery, Mullen.

Edna Clark, 83

(March 5) HEMINGFORD - Edna Clark, 83, of Hemingford died Monday, March 3, 2003, at Good Samaritan Health Care Center. Edna was born April 22, 1919, in Sioux County to Harry L. and Gertrude (Bouck) Hume.

She attended school in Marsland. She was united in marriage to Alvin (Pete) Clark on May 2, 1936. They farmed and ranched in Marsland and Hemingford area. Her survivors include her children and spouses Wayne and Marge Clark of Alliance, Dell and Karen Clark of Hemingford, Donna and Clell Riesen of Minatare, eight grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her sisters, Gwen and Keith Knapp of Sun City, Ariz., Orpha and Bud Davis and Lillian Hudson of Bowling Green, Ky. Her parents, husband and a sister Shirley preceded her in death. She was a member of the D.A.R., Rebeccaâs and Genealogy Society. She served on the Marsland and Hemingford Cemetery boards. She also worked as the editor of the Hemingford Centennial Book.

Funeral services will be Friday, March 7 at 10:00 a.m. at the United Methodist Church in Hemingford with Reverend Craig Collins officiating. Burial will be in the Hemingford Cemetery. Memorials may be given to the Hemingford Library. Bates-Gould Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Carl Schwindt, 92

(March 5) GERING - Carl Schwindt, 92, of Gering, Neb., died Sunday, March 2, 2003, at Heritage Health Care Center. He was born on March 6, 1910, at Potopwa, Russia, to Henry and Caroline (Reifschneider) Schwindt.

With four other children, he left Potopwa, Russia, on the King Kiser Wilhelm Ship when he was three years old and settled in the Gering area. With his wife, Henrietta (Fogel) Schwindt, who preceded him, he moved to Bayard where they farmed and later moved to Kimball where he owned the Standard Station. He was later the Kimball Chamber executive director. He later married Esther (Dietrich) Ostermiller, and they moved to Gering to make their home. He was a lifetime member of the Lions Club and Lutheran Church. He was proud to be an American citizen. He is survived by his wife, Esther Schwindt of Gering; son Ronald of North Platte; daughter Kathleen Stahla of Sitka, Alaska; eight grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren. He also is survived by brother David Schwindt of Alliance; step-son Dennis Ostermiller of Newington, Conn., step-daughter Paula Bell of Ferndale, Wash.; five step-grandchildren; and three step-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his first wife Henrietta Fogel Schwindt; son Jimmy Schwindt; granddaughter Nikki Schwindt; brothers Henry Schwindt and Fred Schwindt; and sisters Katy Yekel, Suzanne Constance, Leah Bumpus, Emma Cheattle, Caroline Schwindt, Molly Osgood and Amy Libsack.

Mr. Schwindt's funeral will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, March 6, at Zion Evangelical Church in Scottsbluff, with Pastor Doug Jones officiating. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. today, March 5, at Gering Memorial Chapel. Burial will be in Bayard Cemetery at Bayard. Memorials may be made to Prairie Haven Hospice and Heritage Health Care Center. Gering Memorial Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Winona V. Mundt Brecht, 86

(Mar. 6) CHADRON - Winona "Nonie" or "Tink" V. Mundt Brecht, 78, formerly of Chadron, died Saturday, March 3, 2001, at Good Samaritan Health Care Center in Alliance. She was born May 17, 1914, at Berea.

Her parents were William and Viola (Haeffner) Mundt. She attended School District No. 13 in Berea until the 10th grade; and graduated from Alliance High School in 1932. After graduation, she was employed at Box Butte County Courthouse. She was married to Lloyd Jennings Brecht on May 1, 1937, at Hot Springs, S.D. The couple then moved to the Dead Horse area southwest of Chadron where they farmed until 1999. During that time, she was employed by Bump Abstract Company at Chadron, retiring in 1978 In 1999, the couple moved Prairie Pines Retirement Community in Chadron, where they resided until Mr. Brecht's death in 2000. In November 2000, she moved to Good Samaritan Towers in Alliance. She was an member of the Rose Hill Extension Club, VFW, BPOE Does, "Turtle Club" and American Legion Auxiliary, and board member of the Dawes County Farm & Ranch Museum. She also was involved with the Blood Bank, Girls and Boys State, and Chadron State College. As a supporter of CSC's foreign student program, she was instrumental in bringing the first overseas students to the campus. She financially sponsored and "adopted" many foreign college students, including the Pak and Tewehade families.

She is survived by two brothers, Raymond Mundt and Arley Mundt, both of Alliance. Mrs. Brecht's memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Friday, March 9, at Chamberlain Chapel in Chadron. Inurnment will be in Greenwood Cemetery in Chadron. Memorials may be made to the Chadron Community Hospital Dialysis Unit or donor's choice. Chamberlain Funeral Home of Chadron is in charge of arrangements.

Emma G. Gauvain, 91

(March 6) ALLIANCE - Emma Gene Gauvain, 91, died March 4, 2002, at the Torrington Community Hospital. She was born on July 17, 1910, in Scotland, S.D., the daughter of Albert Joseph and Catherine Ann (Cerney) Reindl.

She grew up and graduated from Scotland High School in 1929. She lived in Morrill and Minatare and eventually moved to a ranch north of Alliance. She attended Chadron State College graduating with a degree in elementary education. She moved into Alliance in 1943. She taught in the rural districts and also taught kindergarten at St. Agnes Academy in Alliance for many years. She enjoyed her home and spent many hours tending her flowers and yard. She loved children and was devoted to playing with and teaching them. She also loved to read and travel, and was interested in rock collecting. She was a member of the American Association of University Women, the Gamma Theta Upsilon; and the Alliance Altar and Rosary Society. She is survived by her two daughters and sons-in-law, Lurleen and Lawrence Adamson of Torrington, Wyo., and Elaine and Larry Simms of Post Falls, Idaho; seven grandchildren, Dr. Laura (Kevin) Anders, Robert Adamson, Cindy Adamson and Matthew Adamson; Lori (Brian) Whittam, Christina Simms and Andrew Simms; and three great-grandchildren, Kristina, Jessica and Christopher. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, one brother Clarence and one sister Marie.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m., Saturday, March 9, Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Alliance with Fr. Bryan Ernest officiating. Burial will be in the Hemingford Cemetery. Visitation will be from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m., Friday, March 8, at Bates-Gould Funeral Home. Memorials may be given to St. Agnes Academy Foundation. Bates-Gould Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
