Esther Katherine Von Bargen, 93

(March 6) ALLIANCE Ñ Esther Katherine Von Bargen, 93, died Tuesday, March 5, 2002, at Highland Park Care Center in Alliance. She was born December 4, 1908, at Denton to John M.N. and Elise (Stenberg) Nielsen.

The family moved to Box Butte County in 1918. Esther was a 1925 graduate of Alliance High School and taught at District 10. On August 30, 1928, she was married to Emil Von Bargen at her parents' home. She was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church. She had an intense love of nature and was an amateur potter. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Kenneth and Ernestine Von Bargen of Lincoln; daughter Eleanor Von Bargen of Denver, Colo.; granddaughters and husbands Lisa Von Bargen and Kenneth Schwarz of Estes Park, Colo., Jill and David Ieppert of Ballwin, Mo., grandson Brian Von Bargen of Windsor, Colo.; and three great-grandsons. Also surviving are a sister and husband, Gladys and Mearl Solberg of Loveland, Colo., brother-in-law and wife, Roy and Sue Boyer of Greensburg, Kan., sisters-in-law, Frieda Koester and Gertrude Koester of Alliance, Dora Von Bargen of Milwaukee, Wis.; brother-in-law and wife Otto and Dorothy Von Bargen of Milwaukee; and numerous nieces and nephews. Her parents, husband, sisters Mary Donovan, Edith Smith and Louise Boyer; and brother Chris Nielsen preceded her in death.

Visitation will be from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m., Thursday, March 7, and 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., Friday, March 8, with the family present, from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m., at Bates-Gould Funeral Home. Graveside services will be at 9:30 a.m., Saturday, March 9 at Hemingford Cemetery. A Memorial Service will follow at 11a.m., at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Alliance with the Rev. Martin T. Schnare and Rev. Richard C. Mueller officiating. Memorials may be given to Immanuel Lutheran Church or to the Hemingford Volunteer Firefighters Association. Bates-Gould Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Harold Emerson, 94

(March 6) OSHKOSH - Harold "Dean" Emerson, 94, of Oshkosh, Neb., died Sunday, March 2, at Heritage Health Care Center in Gering. He was born Dec. 14, 1908, at Bingham, Neb. His parents were Wilmot Zelotes and Bernetta (Cook) Emerson.

He attended school in Sheridan and Garden counties through the eighth grade; and then left home to haul freight for Spade Ranch at Ellsworth, from the towns of Lakeside and Ashby. He also worked for other ranchers. He married Ruth Withers on Dec. 24. 1930, at Alliance. Mrs. Emerson preceded him in death. The couple lived on ranches in Sheridan and Garden counties, and then bought their own ranch near the Crescent Lake Refuge in 1950. Upon retiring in 1987, the couple moved to Oshkosk. In October 2001, he moved to Highland Park Care Center at Alliance, and in November 2002 relocated to Heritage Health Care Center at Gering. He was a member of the Nebraska and American Hereford associations, and was honored as an Old-Time Cowboy at the Ash Hollow Nebraska Centennial. He is survived by his daughter, Peggy LaDean of Scottsbluuff; two sons, Joe Emerson of Lisco and Tom Emerson of Whitman; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth, and his sister, Iva Bllard.

Mr. Emerson's funeral will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 8, at Holechek Funeral Home in Oshkosh, with Rev. Cliff Transeier officiating. Burial will be in Ash Hollow Cemetery, near Lewellen Visitation will be from 1 p.m. until 8 p.m. Friday at Holechek Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the Hills Fire District or the Oshkosh Senior Center. Holechek Funeral Home in Oshkosh is on charge of arrangements.

Myra Jo Dreyer, 53

(Mar. 7) LONGMONT, Colo. - Myra Jo Dreyer, 53, of Longmont, Colo., died Sunday, March 4, near Dacono, Colo. She was born Aug. 21,1947, at Colorado Springs. Her parents were Joseph O. and Anabel (Law) Rose.

She graduated from Longmont High School in 1965, and earned a B.A. in History from Colorado State University in 1969. She was married to Donald J. Dreyer on Aug. 31, 1968, at Longmont. Mr. Dreyer grew up in the rural Hays Springs area. She was a piano teacher. She was a member of Gamma Phi Beta, and Spurs and Mortarboard Honorary sororities of CSU; St. Vrain Music Association; Sunshine Club; Longmont Council of the Arts board; Colorado Music Festival board; Boulder Meeting of Friends (Quaker); RAD; CHAMPS; and president of Longmont Chamber Music Association.

She is survived by her husband Donald of the home in Longmont; two sons, Lee Dreyer of Lincoln, Neb., and Jay Dreyer of Manning, Iowa. She also is survived by her sister, Deborah Guse of Longmont.

Mrs. Dreyer's funeral will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, March 8, at First Evangelical Lutheran Church, with Reverend Bruce A. Welander officiating. Her graveside service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 10, at Pine Knoll Cemetery in Hay Springs, Neb. Memorials may be made to CHAMPS program or Red Cloud Indian School of Pine Ridge, S.D., in care of Ahlberg Funeral Chapel.

Leonard G. Thomas, 91

(March 7) GERING - Leonard G. Thomas, 91, died Friday, March 7, 2003 at Heritage Healthcare Center. He was born Aug. 8, 1911, at the family home at Angora, to Rufus and Tina A. (Wood) Thomas.

He married Avis Langford in 1934, at Bridgeport. They were married for 55 years before she passed away in 1989. He had farmed in the Alliance area for 60 years. He was a past member of the Eagles and the Alliance Volunteer Fire Department. He is survived by his daughters and sons-in-law, Helen and Bob Jamison of Alliance, and Nancy and Rich Cassel of Holyoke, Colo.; daughter, Peggy Thomas of Oakland, Calif.; sisters, Mildred Duhon of Alliance, and Betty Carlson of Chino, Calif.; 18 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, brothers, Don, Russell, and Leo, sister Dorothy, son David, daughter Beverly Groce, and a grandson Randy Cassel.

Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, March 11, at the Bates-Gould Chapel, with Rev. Don Mink officiating. Memorials may be given to the Heritage Healthcare Center at Gering or to a charity of the donor's choice. Bates-Gould Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Frances P. Haines, 88

(Mar. 8) BROKEN BOW - Frances Pauline Haines, 88, of Broken Bow died Monday, March 5, 2001, at Jennie Melham Hospital in Broken Bow. She was born Aug. 24, 1912, at Webster County, Neb. Her parents were Edward and Katherine (Wunschel) Peper.

She attended school in Webster County. She was married to Ernest Haines on May 15, 1934, at Lawrence, Neb. Mr. Haines died in 1966. She was employed as a florist while the couple resided at Hastings, and then moved to Broken Bow in 1956, and back to Hastings in 1963. Later, she moved to Grand Island; then Green River, Wyo., in 1985; and then back to Broken Bow in 1992. She was a member of the St. Joseph's Catholic Church and the Altar Society.

She is survived by two sons, Linus Haines of Alliance and Royce Haines of Hastings; two daughters Verla Myers of Hastings and Ardys Trent of Lake Havasu City, Ariz.; 19 grandchildren; and 22 great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Hanes' funeral was at 10 a.m. today, March 8, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Broken Bow. Burial will be in St. Joseph's Cemetery in Broken Bow. Memorials may be made to St. Joseph's Altar Society in Broken Bow. Govier Brothers Mortuary of Broken Bow was n charge of arrangements.

Mardella Wright, 70

(March 11) BURLINGAME, Calif. - Mardella Wright, 70, died Friday, March 8, 2002. She was born Dec. 9, 1031, at Alliance. Her parents were Claude and Berneice (Rust) Hulett.

She was a 1948 graduate of Alliance High School. She was married to Gordon Wright. He preceded her in death. She is survived by daughters, Karen, Linda and Laura; sons, Gordon Jr. and Alex; and 11 grandchildren. She also is survived by brothers Byron and Larry; and her sister Darlene.

Harold V. Perrin, 79

(March 11) ALLIANCE - Harold V. Perrin, 79, died Sunday, March 9, 2003, at Good Samaritan Village. He was born June 2, 1923, at Hyannis, to Vergil and Velma (Lewis) Perrin.

He graduated from Nebraska School of Agriculture at Curtis in 1941, and served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He spent the rest of his life ranching in the Sandhills. On May 9, 1948, he and his wife Bobbie were married. He was a member of The American Legion and a charter member of the Round Lake Ropers. In 2002, he was inducted into the National Bits, Spurs and Saddle Collectors Association Hall of Fame at Loveland, Colo. He is survived by his wife, Bobbie; daughters Ronda (Leonard) Adam and Lynn Perrin of Hyannis, and Jackie Sathre of Arvada, Colo.; and four grandchildren. He also is survived by sisters Shirley Wernke of Eaton, Colo., and Edie (Cookie) Everson of Lincoln; and brother Hank Perrin of Bonner Springs, Kan. Memorials have been established to Prairie Haven Hospice and Good Samaritan Village, Alliance.

Mr. Perrin's funeral will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday, March 12, at the UCC Church at hyannis, with Pastor Bill DeLisle officiating. Mullen/Arnold Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Fern Green, 74

(March 11) LAS VEGAS, Nev. - Fern Green, 74, long time resident of Alliance, died Sunday, Feb. 16, 2003, at Mountainview Hospital, Las Vegas. She was born Oct. 25, 1928, at Fairfield, Neb., to Maude and Wilfred Illingworth.

In 1947 she was married to Fred Green of Omaha. They made their home at Alliance where they owned and operated Green's Floor Covering for over 20 years and were both very involved in the community. They retired to Las Vegas. She is survived by her husband Fred; daughters Sandie Simonson and Kathie Brown of Las Vegas; five grandchildren, Thomas Simonson of Las Vegas, Ryan Brown of Denver, Colo., Andrea Weber of Alliance, Faith Harwick of Lincoln, and Taryn Brown of Las Vegas; and three great-grandchildren, Kade and Konnor Weber of Alliance and Madilyn Brown of Denver. She also is survived by a brother, Dwight Illingworth of Palmdale, Calif.; a sister, Betty Reisbeck of North Platte; and two nieces. She was preceded in death by her daughter Debbie Foltz. She attended First Christian Church where a memorial service will be held in May.

Memorials have been designated to the Nebraska Boys Ranch in memory of both Fern and Debbie. Her ashes will be buried next to her daughter in the Alliance Cemetary. Condolences may be sent to the family at 2660 Grassy Springs Place, Las Vegas, NV 89135.

Helen M. Barger, 87

(March 12) ALLIANCE - Helen M. Barger, 87, died Sunday, March 10, 2002, at Good Samaritan Health Care Center. She was born August 22, 1914 in Nodaway, Iowa, to Archibald and Clara (Redman) Ewart.

On June 18, 1934, she was married to Malcolm Barger at Creston, Iowa. She is survived by one daughter Jane Cox of Alliance; sons, William Barger of Hot Springs, S.D., and Michael Barger of North Liberty, Iowa; ten grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. Her parents, husband, two sons, one daughter, two brothers and four sisters preceded her in death. A memorial has been established to Good Samaritan Health Care Center, P.O. Box 970, Alliance, NE 69301.

Graveside services will be at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, March 14, at the Carl Cemetery at Carl, Iowa. Bates-Gould Funeral Home of Alliance and Powers Funeral Home of Creston, Iowa are in charge of arrangements.

Zora Marsh, 102

(March 12) LAHABRA, Calif. - Zora Marsh, 102, formerly of Alliance, died March 7, 2002. She had been living with a daughter, Judy Abrams, and her husband Don in La Habra, Calif., for the past four years. She and her husband, Vern were long-time residents of Box Butte County. They lived sixteen miles northwest of Alliance where they farmed and ranched for 48 years.

They retired in 1975 and moved into Alliance. Her husband Vern preceded her in death in 1980. Following his death, she traveled back and forth to La Habra each year to spend the winters with family living in California. She was born Zora Richardson January 28, 1900, in Heber Springs, Ark. She was married to Vern Marsh on Dec. 23, 1922. After surviving a disastrous flood in Arkansas, they moved to Box Butte County along with their three children. Here they went through many hardships, including the depression, drought, dust storms, grasshoppers, low crop prices, and were stranded on the farm for six weeks during the 1949 blizzard. Their daughter Hope, dropped supplies to them by plane for the duration of the blizzard. She is survived by eight children and their spouses, Judy and Don Abrams of La Habra, Calif., Veda Marsh-Inouye and her husband Mausato Inouye of San Pedro, Calif., Hope and Bob McNay of Whittier, Calif., C.J. "Bus"and Leona Marsh of Alliance, Pat Langham of erritos, Calif., Ruby and John Ledger of Apple Valley, Calif., Norma and Kerry Hawk of Arvada, Colo, and Shirley Brown of Lakewood, Colo.; 13 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; and 4 great-great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m.,Friday, March 15, at Bates-Gould Chapel with Rev. James Rowe officiating. Burial will be in the Alliance Cemetery. Bates-Gould Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Gaylord Miller, 92

(March 12) ALLIANCE - Gaylord Miller, 92, formerly of Torrington, Wyo., died Monday, March 10, 2003 at Good Samaritan Village. He was born in Laramie County Wyoming in the Meadowdale area on May 2, 1910, to James and Mary (Dower) Miller.

He started school in Sunrise and graduated from High School in 1930. When his father retired, he moved to Greeley, Colo. with the family. While living there he met Bonita (Baker) Paulson in 1934 and they were married at Ft. Collins, Colo., on Sept. 22, 1935. They moved to Torrington in September 1939, where they went to work for Rex Young in the Keep-U-Neat Cleaning business. Gaylord was called to serve his country in September of 1943 and entered the Navy. He was sent to Faragut, Idaho, for boot training then was shipped to San Diego, Calif., for Anti-Sub Warfare training and maintenance school. After graduation he was sent out to the Pacific theatre of operation where he served until the end of WWII. He was discharged at Bremerton, Wash., in 1945 as a Sonar Man Second Class. He returned to Torrington where he and Bonnie purchased the Keep-U-Neat Cleaners in January 1946. They owned and operated the cleaners until January 1969, when they sold the business. He went into the Tri-County Savings and Loan where he was on the board and did appraisals. He retired from Tri-County in 1980. He joined the Torrington Rotary Club in 1948 and was a very active member. The club honored him as a Paul Harris Fellow in 1993. He was an avid photographer and historian for the Rotary Club. He was a member of the United Presbyterian Church, was elected to the Torrington City Council and served two terms. He served two terms on the board of the Goshen County Library, was a member of the B. P. 0. Elks and became a life member, was appointed to the board of the Wyoming Parks Commission and served two terms. He joined The American Legion, and the Goshen County Country Club and served on the board and was president for the year 1971. He was appointed to serve on the City of Torrington Golf Committee in 1986 and acted as Secretary during the building of the back nine at the Municipal Golf Course. He was a life member of the Wyoming Senior Golf Association, and a member of the Senior Masters Golf Association.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Bonnie on February 25, 2002, and a nephew, Philip Blaylock. He is survived by three nieces and their husbands, Karla and Harvey Bartel of Sun City, Ariz., Karen and Larry Debus of Alliance, and Paula and Robert Foster of Englewood, Colo.; and a nephew, Alvin Schooley of Mundy, Texas.

His memorial service will be at 10 a.m. Monday, March 17, at the First Wyoming United Presbyterian Church at Torrington, with Rev. Peggy Brown officiating. Memorials may be sent to the Torrington Presbyterian Church, or Good Samaritan Village/ Special Care Unit of Alliance, 1016 E. 6th St., Alliance, NE, 69301.

Opal E. Keller, 84

(March 12) GURLEY - Opal E. Keller, 84, died Monday, March 9, 2003, at her home. She was born Aug. 27, 1919, in Garden County, to Edwin Adolphus and Ida Mae (Hinman) Neff.

She attended Alliance Public Schools and graduated from Alliance High School. Following graduation, she worked with the War Records Department in New Jersey. On May 6, 1943, she was married to Wayne Winton Keller at Alliance. They moved back to Garden County in the late 1940s where they owned and operated a honey house and bee operation. She worked for Midwec Corporation, then Marshalltown Instrument for 22 years. She was a member of the Flat Top Camera Club, the Oshkosh Garden Club and the Garden County Historical Society. She is survived by her husband Wayne; sons David (Linda) Keller of Fairburn, Ga., John (Sally) Keller of Searcy Ark., Allen (Marilyn) Keller of Esko, Minn., Jerry (Lisa) Keller of Gurley and Terry Gurley of Woodstock, Ga.' 14 grandchildren and four great grandchildren. She also is survived by two sisters, Esther (Sonny) Czeisel of Copague, N.Y., and Edith Keller of Alliance. She was preceded in death by her parents, sisters Rose and Margaret, brother Donald and son Marvin Andrew. Memorials have been established to the Garden County Historical Society or the memorial Health Center Hospice Program.

Memorial services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, March 14, at the Sidney Church of Christ, with Mike Anderson officiating. Inurnment will be in the Alliance Cemetery. Holechek Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
