Kenneth Johnston
Kenneth Johnston, father of Jo Leyland of Imperial, died June 2, 2004, at Cope, Colo. His services were Monday where his granddaughters, Chelsea and Shelby Leyland, sang.
Johnston was delivered at home during a blizzard on March 26, 1931, along with a twin brother, Keith.
From an early age, he demonstrated a love of small animals. He also enjoyed hunting which proved valuable as a young adult when he took interest in trap shooting. He earned second place in Class A at a AHA registered trap shoot in Denver, Colo., shooting 94 out of 100 rocks.
Kenneth went to school in Cope, Colo., where he met Clara Hoyer. They decided to marry when Clara was just 16, so she needed parental permission. They were married in the courthouse entryway at Florence, Ariz., on April 6, 1952, then honeymooned in Mexico along with Clara's parents, two brothers and Kenneth's twin brother.
Kenneth's first job was working in Cope at the Conoco gas station. He then took a job drilling water wells while Clara finished high school. That job took the couple to Canyon City, Colo., for a short time where the job entailed oil drilling. They moved back to Cope where Kenneth worked for his father-in-law as a machinist and mechanic. He later took a position of operating the Carter service station in Joes, Colo.
The couple welcomed two daughters into their lives, Jerrie Lee and Jo Ann, in 1956 and 1958.
Kenny continued to work at the service station in Joes until 1961 when he began his career as a lineman for Plains Telephone Company and soon became the plant superintendent. He worked in the days when telephone wires hung on poles and in order to fix anything, the repairman had to climb the pole. His girls always spent a day at work with Kenny in the summer and loved to watch their dad when he strapped on his climbing apparatus and scaled a pole.
From aerial wires and party lines to underground fiber optic cable, Kenny adapted to the advances in telecommunications and worked in the telephone industry for 32 years.
He was a multi-talented man with the ability to work with his hands in many different circumstances. He and Clara built their current home, literally from the ground up. His versatility proved invaluable when he even learned to tie bows on the girls dresses. He was also a fine craftsman and enjoyed helping others learn the skills of woodworking.
Kenny was willing to lend a hand with remodeling projects when each of his daughters married and bought fixer-upper homes. While his daughters were a very important part of his life, Kenny found his four grandchildren to be a source of great joy. The word, "No" was not in Granddad's vocabulary. He delighted in making furniture, toys and keepsakes for his grandchildren which have become collectable treasures.
Kenneth enjoyed 10 years of retirement when he engaged in metal detecting adventures and of course, woodworking and other projects in his massive and fully equipped shop. He also took time to attend events where he could watch his grandchildren perform in various activities. He enjoyed good health until the last few months of his life.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and a sister.
Leaving to mourn his passing are his wife of 52 years, Clara Johnston of Cope, Colo.; his daughter Jerrie and her husband, Jim Wheaton, of Haigler, daughter Jo and her husband, Jeff Leyland of Imperial; four grandchildren, Adam and Brent Wheaton and Chelsea and Shelby Leyland; two brothers, a sister and brother-in-law, many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
