Lloyd M. Helberg

Lloyd Maynard Helberg died Tuesday, November 1, 2005 at Southview Manor Care Center in Cozad. He was 85 years old.

Lloyd was born on November 2, 1919, at Brady, Nebr., to Ralph T. and Anna Grace (Ohlson) Helberg. He attended rural grade school until the eight grade. On January 10, 1942, he entered the US Army and served during World War II. He was honorably discharged on October 12, 1945.

On February 19, 1948, he married Delores M. Helberg at North Platte. They made their home near McCook where they raised their family and Lloyd was a farmer.

He was a member of the McCook Christian Church, Hereford Association and a 4-H leader for many years. He enjoyed his flower garden, music, and spending time with his family.

Preceding him in death were his parents, Ralph and Anna Helberg; step-mother, Grace Helberg; grandson, Mark Hinz; one brother, Roland Helberg; one brother-in-law, Elvin Nelson; two sisters-in-law, Beulah and Donna Helberg and son-in-law, Tim Waddell.

Survivors include his children, Anita and husband, Bob Kuhlman, of Glenrock, WY, Gayle and husband, Jim Bird, of Almena, KS, Doug and friend, John Watson, of Omaha, Eldon and friend, Bill DeKnight, of Traer, KS, Kent Helberg and wife, Melvina, of Blackwell, OK, Jan and husband, Kim Wiemers of McCook, Trudy and husband, Jerry Burkholder, of Bartley and Jay Helberg and wife, Barb, of McCook; mother-in-law, Florence Mercer, of St. Paul; one brother, Stanley Helberg of Oconto; three sisters, Annabelle and husband, Jim Kubicka, of Windsor, CA, Eleanor Nelson and Cora and husband, Morris Devine, all of Gothenburg; 16 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren.

Memorials were to be given in his name to the Alzheimer’s Association.

Funeral services were Friday, November 4, 2005, 11:00 a.m. at McCook Christian Church with Pastor Clark Bates officiating. Burial took place in Memorial Park cemetery.

John Francis Helm

John Francis Helm, 89, died Saturday, December 11, 2004 at Citizen Medical Center in Colby, Kansas.

He was born August 19, 1915 to Walter H. Helm and Susie M. Malleck Helm at Red Willow Station, Red Willow County. They moved to a farm near Bartley, Nebraska in 1920. John attended Bartley schools and graduated with the class of 1933.

He joined the Army in January 1941, serving in the United States, England, and France. He was discharged as a Master Sergeant in September 1945. He was married to Helen Margaret Sughroue on Oct. 10, 1942 at St. Catherine’s Catholic Church in Indianola, Nebraska and they became parents of eight children.

They lived four years in the Indianola, Nebraska area, and then they bought their farm and moved to the Lyle community in Kansas in March 1949.

John served on the Grant Township Board, Spring Branch School Board, and was on the Board of Directors for Wheat Growers Association for Decatur County when it was established. In 1959 he received the Bankers’ Award in Soil Conservation.

He was a lifetime member of Jack Helt American Legion Post # 313, the Beaver Valley V.F.W. Post #7719, the McCook Elks Club and the Knights of Columbus. He attended Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Oberlin, Kansas and St. Catherine’s Catholic Church in Indianola, Nebraska.

He was a cattleman and farmer, an avid reader and enjoyed dancing. He was a loving husband, father, and grandfather.

He is survived by his wife Helen, four sons: Jim and wife, Yanis of Danbury, Nebraska; Fred of Hilo, Hawaii; John and wife, Pam of Redmond, Washington; Mike and wife, Deb of Norcatur, Kansas, four daughters: Mary Helm of Tucson, Arizona; Kathy Brashears and husband, Robert Hezzy of Curtis, Nebraska; Ceanne Rinehart and husband, Martin of Colby, Kansas; Laurie Helm of St. Joseph, Missouri, eighteen grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren.

Leila S. (Thorstenson) Herzog

Leila S. “Miss T” Herzog of Culbertson died Thursday, April 27, 2006 at El Dorado Manor in Trenton. She was 73 years old.

T. was born on November 13, 1932 at Fergus Falls, MN to Olaf H. and Opal Normanda (Rovig) Thorstenson. She graduated from Battle Lake High School. She attended Iowa State College, Kearney State College, and Colorado State College. She earned her Bachelors Degree in secondary education.

On June 5, 1971, she married Edward L. Herzog at McCook. To this union one daughter was born. T. taught in public schools in Iowa and Nebraska as well as being a school counselor for 32 years, retiring in 1989. After her retirement, she became a Mental Health Practitioner at Norton Correction Facility from 1989 to 1994. She was also a mental health support leader for the Nebraska Critical Incidence Stress Management Team.

T. enjoyed being a homemaker and mother. In her free time she enjoyed reading, quilting, crocheting, writing and gardening. She was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church. Other memberships included NSEA, NSEA-R, CISM and CASA.

Preceding her in death were her parents, Olaf and Opal Thorstenson: and adopted grandma, Mabel McDermed.

Survivors include her husband, Ed Herzog of Culbertson; daughter Katherine “Kathy” Herzog of Culbertson; one grandson, Alexander Herzog of Culbertson; one brother, Marlo Thorstenson and wife, Marilyn, of Adams, MN; sister, JoLaine and husband, Earl Hustad, of Battle Lake, MN.

Memorials were to be given in her name to the American Cancer Society.

Rosary was Wednesday, May 3, 7:00 p.m. at Carpenter Breland.

Mass of Christian burial took place Thursday, May 4, 10:00 a.m. at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church with Father Gary Brethour officiating. Inurnment took place in the Culbertson cemetery.

Mark Allan Hinz

Mark Allan Hinz, 35, died Saturday (August 20, 2005) southeast of McCook as a result of a car accident.

On January 29, 1970 he was born in McCook to Kenneth D. and Gayle Lee (Helberg) Hinz. He attended Republican Valley and McCook Public Schools.

Mark had been an electrician for ten years. He also helped with the mechanics at the McCook Speedway and was an avid hunter.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Delores Helberg, Emil and Charlotte Hinz; and an aunt, Dorothy Kalthoff.

Survivors include: two sons, Drew Matson and Drake Matson and a daughter Shaedee Matson all of Wray, CO; his father, Kenneth Hinz of McCook; his mother and step- father, Gayle and Jim Bird of Almena, KS; a brother Merlin Hinz and wife Deonne of Bartley; Grandfather, Lloyd Helberg and great-grandmother, Florence Mercer both of Cozad; Aunts and Uncles, Robert Hinz, Donald Hinz and Alvin Hinz, all of McCook, Douglas Helbert of Omaha, Eldon Helberg of Oberlin, Kent Helberg of Blackwell, OK., Jan Weimers and Jay Helberg of McCook and Trudy Burkholder of Bartley.

Memorials were accepted in his name.

Funeral services were Tuesday at 11 a.m. at St. John Lutheran Church - Ash Creek with Pastor Mark Stahla officiating. Burial took place in St. John cemetery - Ash Creek with Scott Mustion officiating.

Bernard Neal Hock

Bernard “Bernie” Neal Hock died Wednesday, May 11, 2005, at Denver, Colorado. He was 52 years old.

Bernie was born on January 22, 1953, at McCook to Leslie L. and Maxine I. (Campbell) Hock. He graduated from McCook High School in 1971.

On May 22, 1976, he married Carol Colling at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in McCook. To this union six children were born. They made their home northeast of Culbertson where Bernie farmed for over 26 years. He was presently driving a semi for Hagan & Sons Trucking of Culbertson, farming, and helping others on week-ends.

Bernie was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church and Knights of Columbus. His real enjoyment in life came from spending time with his family and friends.

Proceeding him in death were his parents, Leslie and Maxine Hock; and father-in-law, Francis J. Colling.

Survivors include his wife, Carol of Culbertson; son, Neal J. Hock of Culbertson; five daughters, Sarah A. Hock of Culbertson, Sister Mary Bernardine FSGM of Alton, IL, Karen and husband, Luke Bortner of McCook, Amanda K. Hock and Melissa M. Hock both of Culbertson; one grandson, Layten Thomas; four brothers, George Hock and wife, Kathy and Brad Hock and wife, Mary Jo, all of Culbertson, Greg Hock and wife, Dawn, of Alamagardo, NM and Rocky Hock and wife, JoAnn, also of Culbertson; six sisters, Jeannine and husband, Steve Schendt, of Lawrence, Lori and husband, John Sutton, of McCook, Lt. Col. Annata and husband, Maj. Mike Sullivan, of Abilene, TX, Angela and husband, Ron Rehtus, Mary Beth and husband, Bill Mines, and Lisa and husband, Byron Merrill, all of Lincoln; and mother-in-law, Mary Colling of McCook; numerous nieces, nephews and friends.

Memorials were to be given in his name.

Rosary took place Monday, May 16, 2005, 7:00 p.m. at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church. Mass of Christian Burial was Tuesday, May 17, 2005, 10:00 a.m. at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church with Father Paul Colling and Father Gary Brethour officiating and other concelebrating priests. Burial took place in Calvary cemetery.

Maurine Elaine (Nelson) Hofferber

Maurine Elaine (Nelson) Hofferber, 92, died Saturday (February 26, 2005) at Community Hospital in McCook.

Maurine was born February 21, 1913 to Edward C. and Rena M. (Johnette) Nelson in Loomis. She graduated from Loomis High School in 1929 and from Kearney State Teachers College in 1934.

She taught school for two years in rural Phelps County schools, in Scotia, and in Arapahoe High School before marrying George F. Hofferber in 1936. As her husband was a civil engineer for the state of Nebraska, they moved 33 times before being stationed in Lincoln, Kearney and McCook during World War II for the building of the air bases there and the prisoner of war camp in Indianola.

She taught home economics in McCook Junior and Senior High from January 1947 until May 1961. In 1952 she received her Master’s Debree from UNL and did graduate work at the University of Northern Colorado, the University of Ames, Iowa, and the University of Wisconsin. In 1961 they moved to Kearney where she was a professor of home economics at Kearney State College until her retirement in 1976.

Mrs. Hofferber was a life member of the Nebraska Parent-Teachers Association and Kearney State College Alumni Association. She was associated with Xi Phi, an honorary scholarship and leadership fraternity, Omega Alpha Tau, an honorary science fraternity, and Sigma Theta Phi, a social fraternity. She is also a member of Gamma Phi Beta Alumnae and Chapter AS PEO sisterhood. Maurine was a member of the United Methodist Church in Kearney, where she worked in the Methodist’s Woman’s Association until she moved back to McCook in 1998.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, George, one infant son, Donald Lee, her brothers, Marion and Maurice and a sister-in-law and dear friend, Evelyn.

Survivors include two daughters, Marilyn and husband Barry Hammond of Bowie, MD and Jeanie and husband Richard Hauxwell of McCook, seven grandchildren 17 great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren, a sister-inn-law and dear friend, Marie Moore, and many loving nieces and nephews.

Maurine was a loving mother, grandmother, and aunt, a caring teacher, and a wonderful friend to many so will be sorely missed by all.

Memorials were to be given to the UNK Foundation, the United Methodist Church of Kearney, or in her name.

Inurnment took place in the Moses Hill cemetery at Loomis.

Samuel Hoffman

Samuel Hoffman, 90, of Aurora formerly of Culbertson, died Sunday, June 27, 2004 at Memorial Community Care in Aurora.

Samuel was born on August 29, 1913, in McCook to Jacob and Anna (Lebsack) Hoffman. He entered the US Army Air Corp in 1941 and served in Hawaii during World War II. He was honorably discharged in 1945.

On October 22, 1943, he married LauraBelle Winton at Battle Creek, Michigan. They moved to Culbertson after he was discharged from the Army, where he worked for Wagner Truck Lines until 1954. In 1954, they moved from Culbertson to North Platte, where he worked for Prucka Trucking Company, which was later bought out by Interstate Systems trucking company. In 1960, they moved to Brighton, Colorado, where he continued working for I.S. as a freight truck driver until his retirement in 1975.

He was a member of the Congregational Church and Culbertson Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Preceding him in death were his parents; two brothers, Art and Abe Hoffman; two sisters, Marie O’Neill and Martha Schaffert; and infant sister; half-sister, Lillian Ludlow; and half-brother, Elmer.

Survivors include his daughter, Carol Wiener of Aurora; half-brother, Fred and wife“Toots” Hoffman of Arapahoe; half-sister, Rose Stovall of Las Vegas, NV; two grandchildren, Kevin Wiener and Jennifer Olson both of Aurora; one great-granddaughter and three step-great-grandsons.

Memorials were to be given in his name.

Funeral services were Friday, July 2, 2004, 2:00 p.m. in McCook at Carpenter Breland Chapel. Burial took place at Memorial Park cemetery.

Fannie (Duckworth) Barber

Fannie Barber died Monday (April 18, 2005) at the home of her daughter, Lois, in Lincoln. She was 101 years old.

On March 22, 1904 she was born at Cedar Bluffs, Kansas to Charles and Dorothea (Greve) Duckworth. Her family lived at St. Francis, Kansas, Wymore and Shubert, Nebraska before moving back to Indianola. Fannie graduated from Indianola High School in 1922, attended college in Boulder, Colorado and taught school at Danbury and at District 42 north of Indianola where she met and later married Forrest Barber on May 15, 1927.

The young couple lived for a short time at Forrest’s Colorado homestead in a sod house near Cope, Colorado. They then went to their permanent home where Forrest and his brother, William lived on the family homestead north of Indianola. They shared the home with William all of his life.

She was a member of the First Congregational Church in McCook and a long time member of the “The Why Worry Club” of Indianola. She spent her life in service to others.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Forrest; a son, Charles; grandsons, Mark Barber and Russell Neel great grandson Dennis Stewart; sisters and husbands, Grace and Charles Sorg, Jane and Charles Laycook; brothers, Frank Duckworth, John Duckworth and Bryan Duckworth and wife, Lois; brother-in-law, William; sons-in-law, Stanley Neel and Kay Don Coburn and great-grandson, Dennis Stewart.

Survivors include: two daughters, Margaret Neel of rural McCook and Lois Thomas and husband Neal of Lincoln; sister-in-law, Dorothy Duckworth of McCook; former daughter-in-law, Dorothy Liess of Arizona; 10 grandchildren and spouses; 25 great-grandchildren; 11 great-great grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; 11 step-great- grandchildren; six nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were Friday at 11 a.m. at the First Congregational Church with Pastor Steven King officiating. Burial took place in the Indianola cemetery.

Memorials may be given to the Senior Center.

John William Beck

John William Beck, formerly of McCook and Culbertson, died Thursday, July 28, 2005 at the Alterra Sterling House Assisted Living Center in Hayes, KS. He was 88 years old.

He was born May 11, 1917 in Canton, SD to Elmer August and Alma Pearl (Hildbridle) Beck. He graduated from Ree Heights, SD.

On October 22, 1945 he married Alma Barger in Oberlin, KS. He later married Gladys Payne in May of 1986 in Texas. Gladys died that same fall.

John farmed around the McCook and Culbertson area until he moved to California in 1972 where he worked in the Wamo Toy Factory. He retired at age 62 and moved to Texas in 1985 to be around family. He had just recently moved to Hays.

He was a member of the First Baptist Church and loved to bake cookies and take them to his neighbors, he also enjoyed gardening and animals.

Preceding him in death were his parents; his two wives, Gladys in the fall of 1986 and Alma in May of 1992; and a sister, Bonnie Smalley.

Survivors include: his daughter Linda Bahl of Hays, KS; a brother, Alfred Beck and wife Helen of Palmdale, CA; two sisters, Evelyn Fredrickson of San Francisco, CA and Melda Meehan of Modesto, CA; a sister-in-law, Sylvia Coppin of Culbertson; three grandchildren, Bill Bahl of McCook, Julie Sanders of Hays, KS and Holly Mattox and husband Andy of Kansas City, KS; three great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were Tuesday, August 2, 2005 at 10:30 a.m. at McCook Christian Church with Pastor Clark Bates officiating. Burial took place in the Riverview cemetery.

Memorials may be given in his name.
