Rick Allen Bridgmon

Rick Allen Bridgmon, 50, of Palisade, died Friday, October 7, 2005 at Chase County Hospital in Imperial.

On February 23, 1955, he was born to Raymond Lyle and Ruth Marie (Edghill) Bridgmon in McCook. He grew up in the Denver area and graduated from Denver Lincoln High School in 1973. Rick moved to the Palisade community in 2004 where he was residing at the time of his death. Rick was employed as a marketing executive for Lamont Marketing of Minneapolis, Min. He later became a truck driver for various companies, the most recent for Briggs and Sons of Imperial.

Rick married Brenda Cudd on June 5, 1982 at Edmond, OK. To this union one daughter was born.

Rick was an avid fan of Nascar, attending many races or just watching them on television, Husker football, and spending time with family and friends.

Preceding him in death were his maternal grandparents Gladys & Harold “Pop” Edghill and paternal grandparents George and Jean Bridgmon.

Survivors include his daughter, Lacey Bridgmon of Edmond, Okla.; his parents, Ray and Ruth Bridgmon of Palisade; one brother Craig Bridgmon and wife, Barbara, of Colorado Springs, Colo.; one sister Kristy Bridgmon of Denver, Colo.; two nephews, Jerrad Bridgmon and wife, Krista, of Flagstaff, Ariz. and Aaron Bridgmon and wife, Jennifer, and their son, Joshua of Castle Rock, Colo.; and a host of relatives and friends.

Memorials may be given in his name.

Funeral services were Tuesday, October 11th, at 11 a.m. at the Palisade United Methodist Church with Rev. Judith Dye officiating.

Carpenter Breland Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Roger John Britten

Roger J. Britten died Monday, April 17, 2006, at Methodist Hospital in Omaha, he was 54.

Roger was born September 4, 1951, to Raymond and Agnes (Delaney) Britten in Red Cloud. He graduated from Blue Hill High School and attended McCook Junior College, where he was a member of the football team.

He married Pamela Williamson on April 8, 1971 in Perryton, Texas and they were later blessed with two children. He worked at Southwest Public Power District for 35 years and served on many state wide committees.

He attended Hamlet Union Church and served on the Palisade Fire Department. He loved people and all animals. In his free time he enjoyed building dog houses and then would give them away.

He was preceded in death by his father, Raymond; infant brother; and aunts and uncles.

Survivors include his wife, Pam of Palisade; son, Brian Britten and wife Amanda of Bloomington, MN; daughter, Jenna Britten of Kearney; mother, Agnes Britten of Blue Hill; brothers, Joe Britten and wife Sharon of Grand Island, Dennis Britten and wife Laura of Clay Center, and Fred Britten and wife Vickie of Syracuse; sisters, Theresa Compton of Bogart, GA and Cecilia Shultz and husband Dan of Council Bluffs, Iowa; many cousins, aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews, and his beloved dog, Duke.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given in his name.

Funeral services were Friday at 2:00 p.m. (CDT) at the Palisade School Gymnasium in Palisade, with Pastor Marshall Erickson officiating. Burial took place in the Palisade cemetery.

Errol Lynn Brunk

Errol Lynn Brunk died, Sunday, May 22, 2005 at his home in McCook. He was 64 years old.

Errol was born on April 20, 1941, at Oberlin, Kansas to Dale L. and Nila R. (Vernon) Brunk. He graduated from Oberlin High School in 1958.

On November 24, 1990, he married Judith R. Hanes at Oberlin. They made their home in the McCook community where Errol was employed by Parker Dayco for 31 years. He enjoyed gardening, football, raising roller pigeons, NASCAR Auto Racing, and listening to country music. Other hobbies included deer hunting and fishing.

Errol was preceded in death by his son Eric in 1990 and his mother in March of 2001.

Survivors include his wife, Judith of McCook; two sons, Eddie Brunk and wife, Julie, of St. Francis, KS and Chris Brunk of McCook; daughter, Diana Brunk of Cherryvale, KS; step-sons, Shannon League of Trenton, Nevada League of McCook and Robert League of Trenton; step-daughters, Tiffany Shirkey and Stephanie Gillander both of Lincoln; his father, Dave Brunk of Oberlin; sister, Janene and husband, Bob Kleidosty, of Lancaster, CA; 6 grandchildren and 11 step-grandchildren.

Memorials may be given in his name.

Funeral services were Thursday, May 26, 2005, 10:30 a.m. at Carpenter Breland Chapel with Jerry Beckenhauer officiating. Burial took place in the Culbertson cemetery.

Lacey D'Lynn Brunswick

Lacey D’Lynn Brunswick died Saturday, May 15, 2004 as a result of a car accident. She was 18 years old.

Lacey was born to Robert Eugene and Larena Lea (Kirby) Brunswick in McCook on December 9, 1985. She attended McCook Public Schools and was a member of the senior graduating class of 2004.

She enjoyed playing softball, collecting bears, and spending time with friends and family.

Her grandfather, Jim Kirby, preceded her in death.

Survivors include her father, Robert “Bob” Brunswick of McCook; her mother, Larena “Larri” and step-father, Bill Follis, of Maricopa, AZ; four sisters, Nichole and Stacey Brunswick of McCook, Crystal Olsen of Sioux Falls, Idaho, and Stephanie Olsen of Washington, DC; grandmothers, Mable Skuldt of McCook and Jody Kirby of Cambridge; niece and nephew, Bailey and Isaac Brown of McCook; aunts, uncles, cousins and a host of friends. She was loved by all and will be forever missed.

Memorials may be given in her name.

Funeral service were Tuesday, May 18, 2004, 2:00 p.m. at Carpenter Breland Chapel with Jerry Beckenhauer officiating. Burial took place in Memorial Park cemetery. Carpenter Breland Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Richard Lewis Bunstock

Richard Lewis Bunstock, 78, died Sunday, Feb. 19, 2006, at McCook, Neb.

He was preceded in death by three wives; Donna (Sullivan) Bunstock, Merry (Meints) Bunstock, and Deloras (Nickerson) Bunstock.

He is survived by son James Bunstock and wife Kerin of Lincoln, Neb.; daughters Candice Arent and husband Paul of Loveland, Colo., Yolanda Weimer and husband Ron of Highlands Ranch, Colo., and Jackelyn Nickerson and husband Pete Palek of North Platte, Neb.; brother William Bunstock and wife Ursula of Chico, Calif.; stepsons Troy Erdman and wife Rita of McCook and Derek Erdman and wife Ginger of North Platte; 10 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

He was born Sept. 30, 1927, at McCook to Clarence and Lillie Bunstock. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1944, and served four years until his discharge in 1948. He was married to Donna Sullivan of Cambridge, Neb., before shipping overseas. On returning from the service to McCook he hired out with the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad, where he worked until his retirement 41 years later in 1989. His wife, Donna, died in 1969, and he married Merry Meints of McCook in 1970. They were divorced in 1974, and he married Deloras Nickerson of Gothenburg, Neb., in 1975. They made their home in Cedar Bluffs, Kan., and alternated living between Cedar Bluffs and the Sandpipers Resort in Edinburg, Texas until Deloras' death in 2002. Afterward, Dick lived briefly in Edinburg before returning home to Cedar Bluffs in 2005, where he lived until his death.

Dick was many things during what he described as a long and rich life -- railroader, hunter, sailor, traveler, builder and craftsman, writer, naturalist and naturist, and proud patriarch. He was a prolific poet, publishing two books, and was named a Poet In Residence for the State of Kansas. Following his retirement, Dick and Deloras lived a seemingly contradictory life, spending winters in deep south Texas and traveling broadly, and in the summers living a quiet existence on their estate in Cedar Bluffs, hosting family and friends and reveling in the quiet solitude. They were proud and unabashed nudists, and Dick was in all things a staunch supporter or a vocal critic. He knew no middle ground, and lived and died on his own terms.

Keith George Burkert

Keith George Burkert, 76, died Wednesday, January 18, 2006, at his home near Hayes Center.

He was born January 30, 1929 to David R. and F. Marion (Wolverton) Burkert in the home that he now lived in. He attended rural elementary school in Hayes County and graduated from Ag Tech High School in Curtis in1946.

On August 19, 1950, he married Twila Mintling. To this union, three boys, Korey, Greg and Bart were born. They made their home on a farm north of Hayes Center.

Keith entered the US Air Force in1952, during the Korean Conflict, and was honorably discharged in 1956. He was a life-time member of the Veteran’s of Foreign War and American Legion Post #287.

He was an active member of the Union Congregational Church of Christ in Hayes Center.

He enjoyed sports of all kinds and was a faithful follower of all the games in his hometown. He was a coach, umpire and announced baseball and softball games. He was an avid “Big Red” fan. His most enjoyment came from watching his grandchildren in all of their activities. He always wore a smile and was a friend to all.

He was preceded in death by his parents, David and Marion Burkert and sister Corrinne Jones.

Survivors include his wife, Twila Burkert of Hayes Center; three sons, Korey Burkert and wife, Stacey, of McCook, Greg Burkert and wife, Tammy, of Hershey, and Bart Burkert and wife, Penny, of Chandler, Arizona; one brother Kirby Burkert and wife, Betty, of Littleton, Colorado; one brother-in-law, Ted Jones and wife, Dee, of Claremore, OK; nine grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews and a host of friends.

In lieu of flowers, memorials can be given in his name.

Funeral services were Monday, January 23, 2006, 11:00 a.m., at the Hayes Center High School Gym with Rev. Fay Ann Blaylock officiating. Burial took place in the Hayes Center cemetery.

Beatrice Jean (McMullen) Burns

Beatrice “Betty” Jean Burns died Thursday, January 13, 2005 at McCook Community Hospital. She was 82 years old.

Betty was born on January 8, 1923, at Waterloo, Iowa to James R. and Marguerite (Anderson) McMullen. She graduated from St. Mary High School in Waterloo and attended Loretta Heights College in Denver, Colorado.

On November 6, 1941, she married Thomas Burns at Holy Family Catholic Church in Denver. They lived in Denver for 10 years where Thomas was an engineer for the railroad. To this union four children were born. In 1953, they moved to McCook where Thomas continued his employment with the railroad and Betty was a busy homemaker.

She was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church and Altar Society. Other memberships included Eagles Auxiliary, serving as president for three years. She loved helping others, exercising, fishing, dancing and singing. She also enjoyed walking, Jazzersize and Strength Training at the Senior Center. She participated in swim therapy at the YMCA for 18 years having three best attendance awards. Her main enjoyment of life came from spending time with her children and grandchildren.

Preceding her in death were her parents, James McMullen and Marguerite McMullen (Moyer); one granddaughter, Brenda Hamrick; sister, Peggy Heidt; and nephew Daniel Heidt.

Survivors include her husband of 63 years, Thomas Burns of McCook; three sons, Joseph Burns and special friend Loretta Minard, Patrick Burns, Robert Burns and wife, Geri, all of McCook; one daughter, Cheryl and husband Joseph Hamrick, of McCook; nephew, Michael Heidt of Marshville, GA and niece Patricia Scoles of Bennettsville, SC; 11 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be given in her name to St. Patrick’s Catholic Church.

Rosary was Sunday, January 16, 2005, at Carpenter Breland Funeral Home. Mass of Christian Burial was be Monday, January 17, 2005, 10:00 a.m. at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church with Father Gary Brethour officiating. Burial took place in Calvary cemetery.

Donna Louise (Stewart) Burton

Donna Louise (Stewart) Burton, 75 of Bartley, died Saturday, April 22, 2006 at Hillcrest Nursing Home after a 14 year battle with cancer.

She was born August 19, 1930 to Robert and Gertrude (Matticks) Stewart at Spring Ranch, Nebraska. Her family moved to a farm north of Bartley when she was three. She graduated from Bartley High School in 1948. She continued her education at Kearney State Teachers College receiving her teaching certificate. She taught in Red Willow County at District 10 from 1949 – 1951 and District 21 from 1951 – 1953. She worked at the McCook Jr. High Cafeteria from 1977 - 1995.

On May 10, 1952 she married Myrlin A. Burton at the Bartley Christian Church. They made their home on the farm north of Bartley. To this union two children were born, William and Patricia. Donna was very active in their farming operation.

She was baptized at the Indianola Church of Christ in 1947, and was a member of the Bartley Christian Church for most of her life. In 2006, she transferred her membership to the McCook Christian Church.

Her greatest joys were her children and grandchildren. She also enjoyed cooking, gardening, and all crafts especially sewing and cross stitch.

Donna was preceded in death by her parents, Robert and Gertrude; son-in-law, Danny Sughroue; and infant granddaughter, Brittany Lee Burton.

Survivors include her husband, Myrlin of McCook; daughter, Patricia Smith, and husband, Tom of Bartley; son, William “Bill” Burton and wife, Coralyn “Cori” of McCook; five grandchildren, Danette Sughroue of McCook, Tye Smith of Bartley, Brett, Brooke, and Breanne Burton of McCook; brother, Kenneth Stewart and wife, Donna of Bartley; Sisters-in-law, Audrey Troester, Grace Burton and Goldene Burton; and brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Harold and Marian Raburn.

Memorials can be given in her name to McCook Christian Church.

Funeral services were Wednesday, April 26, 2006 at 10:30 a.m. at McCook Christian Church with Pastor Clark Bates officiating.

Burial in the Bartley cemetery.

Frieda Anna Alvina (Sommerfeld) Bush

Frieda Anna Alvina (Sommerfeld) Bush, was born November 12, 1918, to parents Carl Daniel Sommerfeld and Ida Engeline Buss, at Blue Hill, Nebraska.

Frieda was baptized December 15, 1918, at Trinity Lutheran Church, Blue Hill. She was confirmed on May 22, 1932 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Blue Hill. Her confirmation verse was: Isaiah 54:10, “Though the mountains be shaken and the hills be removed, yet my unfailing love for you will not be shaken nor my covenant of peace be removed, says the Lord, who has compassion on you.”

Frieda died on Monday, June 14, 2004 at Heritage of Wauneta.

Frieda married Arthur R. Bush August 30, 1946, at Zion Lutheran Church, Hastings. They moved to the AJ Irvine ranch, north of Hamlet, Nebraska, May 1, 1949 and retired to Palisade March 1991.

Frieda was a member of the Palisade Trinity Lutheran Church and Lutheran Women’s Missionary League.

Frieda is survived by her husband, Arthur Bush of Wauneta; three daughters, Laurel Adaire Bush of Helsinki, Finland, Lona and husband, Robert Farrell of Gray, Maine, and Barbara and husband, George Cooksley, of Anselmo; two grandchildren, Christopher Farrell and Sara Cooksley; one brother, Paul Sommerfeld and wife, Leone; sister-in-law, Pauline and husband, Arlie Bodeman; and brother-in-law, Richard Bush and wife, Louise.

Frieda was a kind and loving wife and mother. She lived her Christian faith through her daily deeds and actions.

Funeral Service were Thursday, June 17, 10:00 a.m. (Mountain Time) at Redeemer Lutheran Church in Wauneta. Burial took place in the Meadow Lawn cemetery in Hamlet.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to KNGN Radio, McCook, NE or the Lutheran Hour, St. Louis, MO.
