Ola Wauneta (BLake) Cable

Ola Wauneta Cable died Tuesday, March 2, 2004, at Bryan LGH East in Lincoln. She was 86 years old.

Ola was born on May 9, 1917, in Maywood to Frank and Estella (Sawyer) Blake.

On November 13, 1945, she married Leo Joseph Cable. To this union one son was born. They made their home on a farm in the Indianola and Bartley area after their marriage. In 1952, they moved to a farm near Arapahoe and farmed until their retirement in 1967. At that time they moved to Norton, KS where Ola was employed at the Norton State Hospital as a licensed Mental Health Technician for 15 years. They moved to McCook where Ola was residing at the time of her death.

Ola was a member of the St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Prairie Pal Club, VFW Auxiliary and Ladies DAV. She volunteered at the St. Patrick’s Bargain Bazaar.

Preceding her in death were her parents, Frank and Estella Blake; her husband, Leo Cable; brothers, Cyrus “Orval”, Harvie, Orla, Oliver “Bud”, and Richard “Otto” Blake; sisters, Ona “Evalena” Fisher, Clarissa Fritsche and Tracy Mullen.

Survivors include her son, Daryl Cable and wife, Fay, of McCook; five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be given in her name.

Rosary was Thursday, March 4, 2004, at Carpenter Breland Chapel. Mass of Christian Burial was on Friday, March 5, 2004, 10:00 a.m. with Father Gary Brethour officiating. Burial took place at Fort McPherson National cemetery in Maxwell with Father Ferdinand Boehme officiating.

Carpenter Breland Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Wayne Eldon Callan

Wayne “Bud” Eldon Callan, 86, formerly of Bartley, died Wednesday, July 13, 2005 at Cozad Community Hospital. He was born June 6, 1919 in Red Willow County to Henry H. and Mildred E. (Wolfe) Callan. He attended Zion Hill School in rural Frontier County. He served in the U. S. Army during World War II from 1941 until 1946.

He married Charlotte Maxine Hall in Santa Maria, CA on July 5, 1942, to this union two children were born, Roger and Rodney. She preceded him in death in June of 1990. On January 2, 1991 he married Athol May Duncan in McCook.

He was a heavy equipment operator for several construction companies throughout his life. He worked on many projects including Harry Strunk, Swanson and Hugh Butler Reserviors and the Frenchman Canal. He also worked on Tiber Dam in Montana. He was an exceptional baseball player in Indianola and Bartley, and later coached in Bartley. He was well-known for his pitching talent but was unable to pursue a professional career due to World War II. He was a member of American Legion in Bartley, VFW in Lebanon, McCook Elk’s Club, and NRA. He loved to hunt and fish and especially enjoyed being a great grandparent. He was also an avid golfer and rarely missed a day of golf in either Cambridge or Arapahoe where he was proud of his hole in one.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Charlotte; 1 granddaughter, Marcia Elizabeth Callan; 3 step-grandchildren, twin boys Larry and Lonnie Foster and Kristy Sayer.

Survivors include his wife Athol of Cozad; two sons, Roger Callan and wife Shirley of Cozad and Rodney Callan and wife Barbara of Colorado Springs, CO; two grandsons, Russell Callan and wife, Karla, of Ord and Chris Callan of Lincoln; two great-grandchildren Riley and Ryan Callan of Ord; two sisters, Marjorie Hall and wife, Harold, of McCook and Lila Zoltay of Denver, CO; two brothers, Delbert “Hoop” Callan and wife, Peggy, of Loveland, CO and Neal Callan and wife, Anita, of McCook. He is also survived by step-children Beverly Foster and husband Jim of Lexington and Linda Sayer and husband Howard of Cambridge, Ron Hansen and wife Kathy of Bartley and Ivan Hansen and wife Julie of Imperial; 12 step-grandchildren; and 13 step-great-grand children.

Memorials can be given to the Bartley Fire Department and Ambulance.

Funeral services were Monday, July 18, 2005 at 10:00 a.m. at Memorial United Methodist Church with the Rev. Dr. Jeff Thurman officiating. Burial took place in Fort McPherson National cemetery in Maxwell with full military honors.

Kenneth Cameron Cappel

Kenneth Cameron Cappel, age 48, passed away Friday, September 9, 2005 at the Mosaic at Bethphage Village in Axtell.

Kenny was born on July 25, 1957, at McCook, to Gaylord Paul and Ruth Carol (Guthrie) Cappel. He had been living at Bethphage since 1980.

Kenny enjoyed all the activities at Bethphage. Some of his favorites were bowling, swimming, and going on outings.

Preceding him in death were his father, Gaylord; one brother, Gary; one sister, Dorothy; and grandparents, George and Pauline Cappel and Leland and Charlotta “Lottie” Guthrie.

Survivors include his mother, Ruth of Benkelman; one brother, Robert of Everett, WA; one sister, Jeanette and husband, Tony Wonderly, of Benkelman; two nephews, Kaleb and Brady Wonderly also of Benkelman; other relatives and a host of friends and staff of Mosiac at Bethphage Village.

Memorials may be given in his name.

Funeral services were at the McCook Evangelical Free Church on Tuesday, September 13, 2005, with Pastor Bruce Lester and Pastor John Gosswein officiating. Burial took place in Riverview cemetery.

Eleanor Ruth (Nelms) Carter

Eleanor Ruth Carter, died Friday, December 23, 2005, at Community Hospital in McCook. She was 74 years old.

Eleanor was born on February 6, 1931, in Indianola, to Marvin A. and Ruth E. (Liston) Nelms. She attended rural school through the eighth grade in Red Willow County and graduated from McCook High School in 1948. She attended McCook Junior College for one year and then began her teaching career of 42 years. She graduated from McCook Junior College in 1956 and from Nebraska State College in Kearney in 1960. She taught four years in Red Willow County rural schools and 38 years at East Ward and Central Elementary in McCook.

Eleanor married Oren E. Carter on September 5, 1970, at Memorial United Methodist Church in McCook. She was a 50-plus year member of Memorial United Methodist Church where she served on various committees. She was church librarian, sang in the Chancel Choir, played in the Bell Choir and was president of the United Methodist Women for two years. She was also a member of Chi Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma and Chapter GY of P.E.O. She was a 4-H Leader for the Golden Rod Sew and Sowers for many years. In her free time, Eleanor loved to spend time in her vegetable and flower garden, cooking and sewing for all of her nieces and nephews.

Preceding her in death were her parents, Marvin and Ruth Nelms.

Survivors include her husband, Oren Carter, of McCook; three brothers, Max Nelms and wife, Dona, of Bartley, Don Nelms and wife, Shirley, of McCook, and Roger Nelms and wife, Rose, also of McCook; numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews; and a host of friends.

Memorials may be given in her name to the Memorial United Methodist Church.

Funeral services were Tuesday, December 27, 2005, 10:30 a.m., at Memorial United Methodist Church with the Rev. Dr. Jeff Thurman officiating. Burial took place in Memorial Park cemetery.

Kenneth Harold Christian

Kenneth Harold Christian, 88, of McCook, died at his home on Monday, December 20, 2004.

Kenneth was born on October 3, 1916, at Aurora, Illinois to Harold and Edna (Balfour) Christian. He graduated from Aurora East High School, in 1934.

On August 3, 1940, he married Arlene E. Northrup at Aurora. To this union three sons were born.

Kenneth was employed as a roundhouse foreman for Burlington Northern, Chicago Burlington and Quincy Railroad until his retirement.

Kenneth had a life-long love for music. He played in several bands, taught music lessons, and repaired instruments for Hershberger’s Music Company.

He was a member of the First Congregational Church, McCook Elks Club and Masonic Lodge.

Preceding him in death were his parents; two brothers, Gail and Bob Christian; and one sister, Charlotte.

Survivors include his wife, Arlene, of McCook; thee sons, Kenneth Christian, Jr. of Junction City, KS, Terry Christian and wife, Linda, of Caledon East Ontario, Canada and Stephen Christian of Grand Island; one sister, Vera and husband, John Hunger, of Aurora, IL; four grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Memorials may be given in his name.

The body was taken to Aurora, IL for services. Final committal took place at Spring Lake cemetery in Aurora, IL.

Rose Marie (Andrew) Christner

Rose Marie Christner, 46, died Wednesday, May 26, 2004 in Palisade. Rosie was a long time resident of Southwest Nebraska living in Hayes Center, Wauneta, Champion, Imperial, Alliance and Palisade.

She was born February 24, 1958 to James M. and Pearl (Hicks) Andrew at Cabool, Missouri. She accepted Jesus as her savior at an early age. She attended school in Hayes Center and Palisade.

On December 31, 1994 she married Jamie Christner at Trenton.

Rosie enjoyed spending time with her children, grand children and family gatherings. She especially enjoyed remodeling projects with her husband, Jamie. She worked with many friends in Imperial and Wauneta.

She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Francis and Mildred Andrew, Elsie Bressie and Sophus and Maggie Hicks.

She is survived by her husband Jamie of Palisade; two son’s Jason Hicks and wife Crystal and Jimmy Hicks and wife Shastyn all of Palisade; her parents, Pearl and James of Palisade; her mother-and father-in-law, Dolores & Richard Christner of Culbertson; brothers Boyd and wife Jacki Andrew of Lincoln and Charles and wife Deb Andrew of Wauneta; two sisters, Sharon and husband Tom Miller of Wauneta and Kathy and husband Doug Hamilton of Alliance; five grandchildren, Cody, Austin, Alexus, Joshua and Ethan Hicks of Palisade; numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces & nephews, aunts, uncles and close friends.

She was laid to rest on Saturday, May 29th at 10 a.m. MST at Riverside cemetery, Wauneta, with Rev. Ray Ridlen of Palisade officiating.

A memorial has been established in Rosie’s memory.

Pauline A. (Beaty) Coghill

Pauline A. Coghill, 92, died Tuesday, December 21, 2004 at Hillcrest Nursing Home in McCook.

On September 7, 1912 she was born to Clark A. and Clara (Beckman) Beaty at Ossian, Indiana. She attended schools in Nebraska, Indiana, Kansas and Colorado and taught elementary school for four years in Kansas. She was Postmaster in Cedar Bluffs, Kansas for two years.

On January 26, 1935 she married Wilson Kesler Coghill in Colby, Kansas. To this union one son was born.

Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband on January 4, 2001; three sisters, Ruth Featherston, Gertrude Ellis, Bernice Smith, and an infant daughter Barbara.

Survivors include: a son, James Coghill and wife Erlene of Ogallala; grandsons, Bradley Coghill and wife, Jenny, and their daughter Hannah of Whittier, CA and Curt Coghill of Kearney.

Memorials are being accepted in her name

Funeral services were Monday, December 27, 2004 at Carpenter Breland Funeral Home with Jerry Beckenhauer officiating. Burial took place in the Danbury-Marion cemetery.

Wilma Lenore (Rees) Cohen

Wilma Lenore Cohen, 90, of McCook died Friday, June 11, 2004, at Community Hospital.

Wilma was born on December 2, 1913, in Wallace, to Harry and Mabel (Kain) Rees. She graduated from Wallace High School in 1932.

On October 23, 1938, she married Eugene Cohen in Wallace. In 1951, they moved to a farm south of McCook. She was living at Willow Ridge Retirement Community at the time of her death.

Wilma was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church and Rosary Society. She was also a member of DAR, AARP and Community Hospital Auxiliary.

Preceding her in death were her parents, Harry and Mabel Rees; her husband, Eugene Cohen on April 15, 1993; one sister, Evelyn Stransky; and two brothers, infant Harry Lee Rees and Howard Rees.

Survivors include her son Stanley Cohen of McCook; daughter, Teresa Helmick and husband, David, of Roseland; two sisters, Betty Berry of Los Angeles, CA and Irma Petersen of Chicago, IL; four grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews and a host of friends.

Memorials may be given in her name to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society or to the Arthritis Foundation.

Rosary was Monday, June 14, 2004, 6:30 p.m. at Carpenter Breland Chapel. Mass of Christian Burial was on Tuesday, June 15, at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church with Father Jerel Scholl officiating. Burial took place in Morningview cemetery at Wallace, NE.

Ronald J. Coleman

Ronald J. Coleman, 52 of McCook died Tuesday, November 30, 2004 at the St. Joseph Hospital in Omaha.

He was born to Wilbur M. and Hilda Olga (Prochaska) Coleman on May 30, 1952 in David City. He graduated from David City Aquinas High School in 1970. He attended the University of Nebraska at Lincoln where he played football. He transferred to at Southeastern State College in Durante, Oklahoma and continued playing football. He graduated in 1974 with a degree in Physical Education.

On December 29, 1973 he married Joan Miriovsky in Brainard. He began teaching in Barnston in 1976-78 where he was the head coach for all sports and P.E. for grades one thru twelve. He moved to McCook in 1977. He has been assistant football, basketball and track coach; head coach for the golf program and the elementary physical education teacher and the last two years he taught high school P.E. Ron especially enjoyed coaching and being able to pass on his passion, love and knowledge to every athlete he came in contact with throughout life.

Ron gained knowledge and expertise in his favorite sport, the game of golf. Ron used this passion to teach the beginner or anyone who wanted to improve his or her game. This was evident by his coaching records. You never doubted his desire to win in any aspect of his shortened life.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Survivors include his wife Joan of McCook; two sons, Justin and wife Chandra Coleman of Omaha and Clint of Minden; three brothers, Gene and wife Betty of Lincoln, Ray and wife Elaine of Lincoln, Steve and wife KayLynn of Fremont; two sisters, Margaret and husband Larry Mach of Weston and Marie and husband Dan Pallat of Ulysses; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Frank and Beatta Miriovsky of David City; extended family and many close friends.

Memorials are being accepted in his name

Rosary was Friday evening at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church.

Memorial services were held Saturday at the McCook High School Gymnasium and Mass of Christian Burial were at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church with Father Gary Brethour and Msgr. Adrian Herbek officiating. Burial took place in Calvary cemetery.
