John Joseph Colling

John Joseph Colling, formerly of rural McCook died Wednesday, December 7, 2005 at El Dorado Manor in Trenton. He was 76 years old.

John was born on April 9, 1929, at McCook to Bernard N. and Helen (Kennedy) Colling. He attended school through the eighth grade. He entered the U.S. Navy in 1951 and served during the Korean Conflict. He was honorably discharged in 1954.

John returned the McCook community where he farmed and raised cattle. He had been residing at El Dorado Manor since May 2004.

He was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus.

He was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, Harlan, Jerald, Frank, and Gene; sister, Helen; three brothers in law Anton Blume, Raymond Ritter and Fred Martin; and sister-in-law Rosemary Colling.

Survivors include his brothers, George Colling of Cambridge, Richard Colling and wife Alfreda, Joseph and wife Eileen Colling all of McCook; sisters Catherine Blume of McCook, Bernadine Ritter of Russell, Kansas; and sisters-in-law, Mary Colling of McCook and Dorothy Colling of Omaha.

Memorials may be given in his name.

Rosary took place Sunday, December 11, 2005, at Carpenter Breland Chapel. Mass of Christian Burial was Monday, December 12, 2005, 10:30 a.m. at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church with Father Gary Brethour and Father Paul Colling officiating. Burial in Calvary cemetery.

Carpenter Breland Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Velma D. (Daniel) Collins

Velma D. Collins died Thursday, March 24, 2005, at Chase County Community Hospital in Imperial. She was 94 years old.

Velma was born on April 8, 1910, in Hayes County, Nebraska to Richard and Kitty (Lantz) Daniel. She graduated from Wauneta High School. She continued her education at Kearney State Teachers College where she graduated with a degree in elementary education.

On July 25, 1929, she married Boyd Lee Collins in Sterling, Colorado. To this union two daughters were born. They made their home in Hayes County most of their married life. Velma taught school in Hayes County and then worked in Social Work for 40 years until her retirement.

She attended Hamlet Union Church since a small child, and enjoyed teaching adult Sunday school. She loved her flowers and gardening and many other hobbies.

Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband, Boyd; an infant son; two brothers, Alvin and Richard Daniel; and one sister, Etta Trainer.

Survivors include her two daughters, Barbara and husband, Lyle Ingersoll, of Palisade and Linda Clark of Omaha; sister-in-law, Ruby Black of Palisade; five grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

Memorials may be given in her name.

Graveside services were Monday, March 28, 2005, at Meadow Lawn cemetery in Hamlet with Ray Ridlen officiating. Burial took place after the service.

Anthony Conroy

“Tony” Anthony Paul Conroy died Monday, April 19, 2004 at Sidney as a result of a motorcycle accident.

He was born June 5, 1962 to Thomas Joseph and Bertilla Ann (Hickert) Conroy at McCook.

He graduated from McCook High School in 1980. After graduation he worked in the oil fields in the surrounding area for 13 years. In 1992 he started ACE Welding. In February 1997 he moved to Scottsbluff where he continued his business and started work for RC Welding for three years. He resumed ACE Welding in 2001. On February 20, 1998 he married Becky Scott in Scottsbluff and to this union a son, Dillon was born.

He was an avid sportsman, enjoying hunting, blue rock shooting, coyote hunting and motorcycle riding.

Preceding him in death was: his mother Bertilla; grandparents, Phillip Lawrence and Catherine Conroy, Al and Amanda Hickert, Perry & Arietta Doak, Harley and Helen Scott.

Survivors include: his wife Becky and son Dillon of Scottsbluff; step-daughter, Kendra Scott; step-granddaughter, Hailey Chafin both of Cheyenne, Wyo.; father, Tom Conroy of McCook; a brother, Phil Conroy of Lincoln; five sisters, Cindy Baumgartner of Edgewater, CO, Monica Conroy of Harlingen, TX, Deb Leach and husband Don of Danbury, Theresa Walters and husband Denny of Danbury, and Pam Herron and husband John of McCook; father-in-law, Ron and wife Julie Scott of Hayes Center; mother-in-law, Janet Lawver of Kearney; sister-in-laws, Lisa Peters of McCook, Misti Moreau of Lincoln, Crystal and husband Todd Abraham of Edison; brother-in-laws, Jerry and wife Tracey Scott of Palisade, Harley and wife Valerie Scott of Franklin; and numerous nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the Dillon Conroy Educational Fund.

Rosary was Friday at the Carpenter Breland Chapel with Father Jerel Scholl officiating. Funeral services were Saturday at 1 p.m. with Jerry Beckenhauer officiating. Burial took place in Calvary cemetery.

Isaac Damon Cornwell

Isaac Damon Cornwell, infant son of Tim and Janet (Rayer) Cornwell, died Thursday, December 1, 2005, at McCook Community Hospital.

Isaac’s survivors include his parents, Tim and Janet Cornwell of Indianola; grandparents Dick and Jane Rayer of Indianola and Sue Cornwell of LaVista; uncles, aunts and cousins.

Preceding him in death was his grandfather, George Cornwell.

Memorials may be given in his name.

Rosary was at 7 p.m. Tuesday at St. Catherine Catholic Church in Indianola. Funeral services were Wednesday at 10 a.m. at St. Catherine Catholic Church Indianola with Father Paul Witt officiating. Burial took place in the St. Catherine cemetery.

John Francis Coyle

John Francis Coyle, 85, of McCook, died Friday, December 31, 2004 at McCook Community Hospital.

He was born October 18, 1919 to John and Amanda (Wendele) Coyle at Culbertson. He attended and graduated from the Nebraska School of Agriculture in Curtis in 1939. He lived in Frontier and Hitchcock Counties all his life.

He served in the U.S. Army during WWII as a Drill Sergeant. He was a Disabled American Veteran.

On May 6, 1945, he was united in marriage to Alice May Jewell of McCook at Garden Prairie First United Methodist Church. To this union six children were born.

He was a farmer and had received the Nebraska State Wheat Farmer of the Year from the Wheat Growers. He was a 4-H leader for more than 20 years. He was a member of the American Legion, the Eagles, Nebraska Wheat Growers, National Farmers Organization, Nebraska Farmers Union, Frontier County Historical Society, was on the school board and active in the Nebraska Small Schools Association.

He was preceded in death by his wife Alice Mae on May 1, 2004; two infant sons, John Wayne Coyle and William Lynn Coyle; and brother and sister-in-law Ervin and Verna Coyle; and brother-in-law, Paul Warnock.

He is survived by: daughter, Patty Harris of Tucson, Ariz.; granddaughter, Tracy Bradley of Denver, Colo.; great-grandson, Jessy Bradley and his wife, Jana; and great-great-grandsons, Daron and Taylor Bradley of Commerce City, Colo.; grandson Charles Harris and great-granddaughters, Christina and Carol Eve Harris of St. Francis, Kan.; daughter, Mary Alice and husband, Richard Corman of Edgar; granddaughters, Angela Corman of Tulsa, Okla., and Crystal Corman of Lincoln; grandson, Kelly Corman of Lincoln; daughter, Donna and husband, Bill Liess, Greeley, Colo.; grandson, Jason Liess of Fort Collins, Colo.; and granddaughter, Sarah Liess of Greeley; son, John Coyle Jr., of McCook and grandson, Trey Coyle; sister, Velma Warnock of Culbertson; nephew Jerry Coyle and wife Jackie of McCook; and various other family members and friends.

Memorials may be given in his name.

Services were Tuesday, January 4, 2005 1:30 p.m. at Carpenter Breland Funeral Home in McCook with the Rev. Dr. Jeff Thurman officiating. Interment took place in the Garden Prairie cemetery, north of McCook on highway 83.

Vera Louise (Aman) Crabtree

Vera Louise Crabtree died Sunday, April 16, 2006 at her home in Indianola. She was 80 years old.

Vera was born on October 22, 1925 at McCook to Wallace Riley and Louise Nora (Brown) Aman. She graduated from McCook High School in 1943, McCook Junior College in 1945 and attended the University of Lincoln.

On February 10, 1946, she married Leslie B. Crabtree in McCook. To this union three children were born. They made their home in various locations around the world including, England, Germany, Alaska and Offitt Air Force Base in Omaha. After her husband’s retirement from the military in 1966, they made their home in Indianola where she was a homemaker.

Vera was a fifty year member of the Indianola United Methodist Church and American Legion Auxiliary.

Preceding her in death were her parents, Wallace and Louise Aman; husband, Leslie; and daughter, Beth Crabtree in 1994.

Survivors include her two sons, Richard Crabtree of Martell and Tommy Crabtree of Indianola.

Memorials may be given to the McCook Humane Society.

Graveside services were Thursday, April 20, 2006, 11:00 a.m. at the Fairview cemetery in Cambridge with Jerry Beckenhauer officiating.

Betty Louise (Burton) Dack

Betty Louise Burton Dack peacefully went to be with her loved ones and Savior, entering Eternity on Saturday, 28 January 2006 while a resident of the Hillcrest Nursing Home her home for the past 29 years. She was 75.

Betty first saw the light of day being born on September 5, 1930 near Bartley, Nebraska to Myrl Russell and Clarice Lucille (Culver) Burton. She was raised by her “step-dad“, Fern O. Ellis, in Cambridge and graduated from Cambridge High School Class of 1947. After graduation she moved to McCook to live with an aunt and uncle to find employment. She worked in various cafes and this was where she met her partner for life, Bob Dack.

On September 5, 1948 she married Robert Francis “Bob” Dack at her mother’s home in Cambridge. Betty and Bob farmed both southwest of McCook on the Dack homestead, and east of McCook on the flat bottom land near the river for many years before moving to their city home on West Fifth. The Lord blessed them with four children, 3 sons and the youngest, a daughter. Betty enjoyed her children, keeping house and hosting various parties like Tupperware, Stanley, etc. She was diagnosed in the mid 1960’s with multiple sclerosis. Her parents, husband, family and friends did everything possible to help, aid, comfort and care for her while still in her own home. However, the crippling disease disabling her, she entered Hillcrest Nursing Home on July 15, 1976, when her youngest child, Jana, was 11 years old. Betty was a devoted wife and very kind, loving mother. She and Bob celebrated their 47th wedding anniversary just before his passing in 1995.

Betty was a people person and enjoyed residing at Hillcrest. In her early years at the Home, she often hosted parties and daily delivered the mail to residents in her electric wheelchair. Hillcrest counted on her many years to daily read the menus at mealtime and recite the blessing. She enjoyed it so when her family gathered with her for birthdays and holidays.

Betty was a member of the Memorial United Methodist Church of McCook and her particular Ladie’s Circle from the church always remembered and showered her with cards and visits.

Betty, along with her husband, Bob, and her mother, Lucille started the MS chapter here in Red Willow County.

Preceding her in death were: her parents, Myrl Russell Burton on October 26, 1998, Clarice Lucille (Culver) Burton Ellis Behrendt on August 29, 1986; step-dad, Fern O. Ellis on September 9, 1972; her husband, Bob Dack on September 18, 1995; her daughter, Jana Sue (Dack) Latimer Biltoft on January 11, 1999; her brother, Ralph Myrl Burton on June 3, 2000 and her daughter-in-law, Julie (Kruegar) Dack on March 21, 2001; four brothers-in-law Clyde “Bud” Dack, Lawrence “Dutch” Eisenbarth and John “Jack” Dack all of McCook and Art Swanson of St. George, Utah; three sisters-in-law Agnes, Doris and Grace Dack all of McCook.

Survivors include her children, daughter-in-law and care-taker Sherrie Goad Dack and her sons, Carter and Stuart Dack of McCook; sons, Robert Dack of North Platte, Bill and wife Shirley Dack, and their sons, Richard and wife Debra, Stephen and Keenan of McCook and Dana Dack of McCook and his children, Natasha and Brandon Dack of Hastings; son-in-law Lynn Biltoft and grandson Jeffery Robert Dack of McCook; and grandchildren Melissa Dack Stanzel Markey and Jeremy (Dack) Stanzel.

Nine great-grandchildren: Miles, Alexander, Cameron, Trinity, David, Zachary and Shandell Dack all of McCook; Liberty Grace Markey of Grand Junction, Colorado; and Shawn James Dack Louden of Hastings, Nebraska.

Two sisters-in-law, Dorothy (Dack) and husband Richard Nielson and Barbara (Dack) and husband Raymond Grafel all of McCook; one brother-in-law Richard and wife Karen Dack of McCook.

Four step-brothers, Bill and wife Jean Ellis of Bartley, Jim and wife Carolyn Ellis of Cambridge, Don and wife Susie Burton of Bartley, Bob and wife Pam Burton of Va. Beach, Va. Three step-sisters, Patricia (Ellis) Williams Swanson of St. George, Utah, Juniata (Burton) Haller and husband Jacob of Richland, MO and Charlotte (Burton) Fisher and husband, Larry of North Platte.

A host of nieces, nephews, cousins and many other close friends Betty has made throughout the years, all of which faithfully remembered her with a card on birthdays or at Christmas. Through the years, Betty has “adopted” all the Hillcrest Nursing Home employees, past and present, and the many various residents, who came and went, as her extended family too.

Funeral services were held at 11:00 AM on Friday, 03 February 2006 at Carpenter Breland Funeral Home of McCook with Pastor Jon Albrecht officiating. Burial will be along side her husband, Bob, and daughter, Jana, in Memorial Park.

Memorials may be given in her memory.

Bradley Eugene Dack

Bradley Eugene Dack, Sr. died Wednesday, November 16, 2005 at Mitchell County Hospital in Beloit, Kansas. He was 74 years old.

Bradley was born on September 9, 1931, on the farm in Red Willow County, Nebraska to Joseph Edward and Maude Cecil (Tubbs) Dack. He graduated from McCook High School in 1951.

Bradley married Agnes Sprenkle in December of 1956. He later married Bernice DeWeese Yust on February 14, 1984. Bradley was a self-employed truck driver and farmer in Red Willow County. In his free time he enjoyed fishing, camping and spending time with his grandchildren.

Preceding him in death were his parents; and four brothers, Grover, Alvin, Joseph and Edwin Dack.

Survivors include his two sons, Joseph Dack and wife, Nancy and Bradley Dack, Jr. and wife, Jocelyn, all of McCook; two daughters, Karen and husband, Ben Lashley, of McCook and Lynda and husband, Gary Wilkin, of Richmond, Missouri; one brother, Dean Dack and wife, Vera, of McCook; two sisters, Opal Dack and Ruby Dack both of McCook; three step-sons; 14 grandchildren, numerous great-grandchildren, nephews, nieces, and cousins.

Memorials may be given in his name.

Graveside services were Saturday, November 19, 2005, 11:00 a.m. at the Indianola cemetery with Jerry Beckenhauer officiating. Burial took place in the Indianola cemetery.

Jean Eileen (Mitchell) Dauchy

Jean Eileen Dauchy, 84, died Thursday, October 7, 2004 at Hillcrest Nursing.

Jean was born on December 29, 1919 at McCook to Charles Henry and Berniece LaVaughn (McManigal) Mitchell. She graduated from McCook High School in 1938.

On June 20, 1938, she married Marvin Loren Dauchy in Atwood, Kansas. To this union one son was born. They moved to Kellog, Idaho and lived there for many years. Jean was a homemaker and worked at the IGA Supermarket in the meat department. They returned to the McCook community in the early 80’s. Jean loved working crossword puzzles.

Preceding her in death were her parents, Charles and Berniece Mitchell; husband, Marvin Dauchy on November 25, 1998; son, Marvin Coulter; twin sister, June Marquadt; sister, Letty Scheidt; and two brothers, Dale and Robert Mitchell.

Survivors include her sister, Wanda and husband, Alfred Seals, of McCook; sisters-in-law, Virginia and husband, Roland Goddard, of Independence, MO and Jean Mitchell of Toledo, Oh; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Memorials may be given in her name.

Funeral service were Tuesday, October 12, 2004, 11:00 a.m. at Carpenter Breland Chapel with Jerry Beckenhauer officiating. Burial took place in Riverview cemetery.
