Lorna Belle (Schmitt) DeGarmo

Lorna Belle DeGarmo of Hayes Center died Tuesday, September 20, 2005 at El Dorado Manor Nursing Home in Trenton. She was 90 years old.

Lorna was born on July 11, 1915 at Akron, CO to Willis S. and Ada Valentine (Johnston) Schmitt. She lived at Akron and Elizabeth CO until she was three at which time she moved with her family to Grandby, CO. When she was nearly 12 her mother passed away and she and her brother, Everett, moved to their father’s place north of Stratton, NE. At the age of 17, she was converted and remained a follower of Christ the rest of her life. After her high school graduation she attended Bible School until 1953 in Colorado Springs.

She was married to Boyd Marshall DeGarmo on May 8, 1953, at Colorado Springs, CO, where they made their home. To this union three sons were born. They later moved to Hayes Center and Haigler, NE, commuting between the two communities where Boyd did auto body repair work and Lorna was a homemaker.

Lorna was a member of the Hayes Center Emmanuel Chapel. She enjoyed sewing, reading, and spending time with her grandchildren.

Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband Boyd; one brother Everett Schmitt; and step-sister Violet Harrison.

Survivors include her three sons, Boyd Willis and wife, Linda, of Colorado Springs, CO, Wendell Ray of Hastings and Kenneth Wayne of Parks; step-brother, Eddie Johnson and wife, Doris, of Pueblo, CO; step-sister, Louise Dengler of Denver, CO; and five grandchildren.

Memorials may be given in her name.

Funeral services were Friday, September 23, 2005, at Carpenter Breland Funeral Home in McCook, NE with Morris Hartman officiating. Burial took place in the Benkelman cemetery.

Irma Ruth (Sterr) Douglas

Irma Ruth (Sterr) Douglass died Friday (March 5, 2004) at Hillcrest Nursing Home in McCook. She was 96 years old.

She was born on August 26, 1907 in Republican City, Nebraska. She was the first born child of Joseph and Harriet Sterr, and was the last surviving of six siblings. Shortly after her birth, the family moved to McCook, where she spent the rest of her life. She was married to Harry W. Douglass on November 22, 1929. He preceded her in death in September 1997.

Irma graduated from McCook High School in 1925 and attended the first sessions of McCook Junior College, which were held in the YMCA. After graduation she worked as a secretary and assistant to John E. and Don Kelly, one of McCook’s pioneering law firms. In time, she became a bonded abstractor and licensed real estate broker. With her husband Harry, she built and for many years managed the Downtown Motel, until selling it in 1962.

In the years following, Irma and Harry lived on an acreage South of McCook and continued their volunteer work in support of Boy Scouts and McCook athletic teams. She and Harry traveled extensively as part of the national Air Stream Trailer organization. From 1970 through 1999, Harry and Irma maintained a winter home in Rockport, Texas—but always returned home to McCook. After Harry’s death in 1997, Irma moved to the Highland Park Retirement Center. A serious injury in 2000 necessitated her move to Hillcrest Nursing Home. She was a life-long member of the First Baptist Church of McCook.

Irma is survived by her son, Robert Douglass and his wife Darlene of Georgetown, Texas and grandchildren, William Douglass of New York City, NY, Stephanie Douglass of Austin, Texas and Jennifer Kemmerer of Lafayette, Louisiana.

Funeral services were held at Carpenter Breland Funeral Home, Wednesday, March 10, 2004. Burial took place in Memorial Park cemetery in McCook.

Memorials should be directed to the First Baptist Church of McCook.

Darrell Eugene Dow

Darrell Eugene Dow, 66, of Hayes Center died Monday, May 17, 2004 at Community Hospital.

He was born December 18, 1937 in Burr Oak, Kansas, to Lyle Merritt and Nellie Lucile (Simpson) Dow. He graduated from Red Cloud High School in 1955.

On June 17, 1958, he married Judith A. Musholt at Fort Bragg, California.

He was employed as a telegrapher for the Northwestern Pacific Railroad. In 1961, they moved to Nebraska where he farmed and worked for hay mills in Holdrege and Orleans. In 1986, the couple moved to Hayes Center where Darrell worked for Hayes County Alfalfa and Southwest Feeders.

Darrell enjoyed hunting and fishing. He was an avid gardener who shared his produce with family and friends. He especially enjoyed playing cards with his family and spending time with his grandchildren.

Preceding him in death were his parents, Lyle and Nellie Dow; and one brother, Melvin Dow.

He is survived by his wife; sons; Lyle of Orleans, Tom (Tammy) of Hayes Center, daughters; Dee (Danny) Wahlgren of Forks, WA, Lorri (Mike) Bantam of Hebron, Melissa (David) Eilers of Overton, and Rose (Richard) Scott of McCook; 17 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by 3 sisters and in-laws: Danola (Gilbert) Katzberg of Prosser; Oleta (Roy) Niimi of Honolulu, HI; Cora (George) Uden of Juniata; and Inge Dow of Juniata.

In lieu of flowers memorials are being accepted in his name.

Funeral services were Thursday, May 20th at the Hayes Center Union Congregational United Church of Christ with Pastor Fay Ann Blaylock officiating. Burial took place in the Orleans cemetery.

Mildred Marie (Maisel) Doyle

Mildred Marie, daughter of John and Eva Maisel was born March 20, 1914, on a farm north of Indianola, Nebraska. She attended school at District 7, not far from their home.

Mildred moved with her parents to a farm southwest of McCook in 1928. She was confirmed April 22, 1928, at Peace Lutheran Church in McCook, Nebraska, where she has been a member all of her life. She worked for many farm wives in the area, helping cook for threshers, or helping with new babies in the families.

Mildred married Cassius Dutton December 17, 1933, and lived on a farm southwest of McCook. They were blessed with three children, Dorothy, Leonard and James. Cassius preceded her in death in 1956.

Mildred then moved to McCook and lived at the Lazy L. Mobile Ranch for several years. She enjoyed writing letters, baking and besides baby-sitting her own grandchildren, she baby-sat with children of many other young couples in McCook.

On November 18, 1977, she married Leonard L. Holmes. They enjoyed traveling and playing cards. Leonard passed away December 1, 1981.

March 1, 1984, Mildred married Robert Doyle, and they lived on Robert’s farm northeast of McCook. Mildred enjoyed the farm life with her garden and the animals. They also enjoyed traveling until her health failed.

It was barely into the new year of 1992, when Mildred suffered a stroke. She spent several weeks in the Kearney hospital and then to Madonna in Lincoln for rehabilitation.

She was no longer paralyzed and her speech returned but there was damage to parts of her brain. Therefore, life became harder for her, as well as for her husband, Bob. She could no longer write the many nice letters to her friends and family, and words didn’t come out as she wanted. Eventually she moved to Hillcrest Nursing Home and was residing there at the time of her death on Thursday, March 25, 2004. Robert preceded her in death October 24, 2001.

Mildred was preceded in death by her husbands, Cassius Dutton, Leonard Holmes and Robert Doyle, her parents; a sister, Agnes Landgraf; brother Walter Maisel, and an infant baby sister, Ruth; also daughter-in-law Marilyn Dutton; a grandson and two great-grandchildren.

Survivors include her children, Dorothy Liess and husband, Don, of Sun City West, AZ; Leonard Dutton of Idalia, CO and James Dutton and wife, Jane, of Broomfield, CO; nine grandchildren, sixteen great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

Funeral services were Tuesday, March 30, 2004, at Peace Lutheran Church with Pastor Randy Wahl officiating. Burial took place in Memorial Park cemetery.

Memorials may be given in her name.

Dorothy J (Hampy) Duckworth

Dorothy J. Duckworth, 86, died Saturday, August 27, 2005 at Hillcrest Nursing Home in McCook.

She was born June 23, 1919 to Homer and Mabel (Bohling) Hampy in Florence, Missouri. She married John G. Duckworth in California, Missouri on January 26, 1946.

She was a member of the Indianola United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women and the Riverside Club. She worked at the Boothray Memorial Hospital in Goodland, KS., the Lawrence Memorial Hospital, Lawrence, Kansas, and the Cambridge Memorial Hospital in Cambridge for 16 years. She was a resident of Hillcrest Nursing Home since 1993.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John; parents; infant son James; and infant sister Leanna.

Survivors include two sons, Bob and wife Deb, and Frank and wife Brenda all of Indianola; daughter, Donna Stanzel and husband Dave of Bartley; five grandchildren, Daniel Duckworth, Phoenix AZ., Toni Lynn Duckworth, McCook, Melissa and husband Jeremy Markey of Grand Junction, CO., Jeremy Stanzel of Okinawa, Japan and Bryan Duckworth of North Platte NE; one great-grandchild, Liberty Grace Markey; and two step-great-grandchildren, Zidane Markey and Aspen Robinson.

Funeral Service were Wednesday at the Indianola United Methodist Church with Rev. David Rowe officiating. Burial took place in the Indianola cemetery

Memorials may be given in her name.

Delores Darlene (Ostendorf) Dutcher

Delores Darlene Dutcher, 75, died Tuesday, November 23, 2004, at her home in Culbertson.

Delores was born on September 12, 1929, on a farm north of Gothenburg, to Martin John and Lillian Ann (Beller) Ostendorf. She received her GED in 1978.

On March 4, 1955 she married Jesse “Dutch” M. Dutcher at Denver, Colorado. Together they raised their two children, Lavone and Jesse. Delores was employed as a prep-cook for Mac’s Drive-In for 25 years retiring in 1995.

She was a member of the Culbertson United Methodist Church and Veteran’s of Foreign War Auxiliary.

Preceding her in death were her parents, Martin and Lillian Ostendorf; step-mother, Eunice Ostendorf; her husband Jesse on August 27, 1999; and brother, Max Burley.

Survivors include her son, Jesse Dutcher and wife, Rebecca, of McCook; daughter Lavone and husband, Anthony Rozmiarek of McCook; brother, Leo Ostendorf and wife, Deb, of Eagle River, AK; sisters, Norma Jean Scott of Gothenburg, Mae Wallin of Hastings and Esther Sawicki of Lincoln; sister-in-law Clara Margaret Aman of Cambridge; step-brothers, Cecil Kimball of Culbertson and Marlin Kimball of Ottawa, KS; step-sisters, Dorothy Cole of Ottawa, KS and Delores Wagner of Colorado Springs, CO; uncle, Clarence Ostendorf of Gothenburg; 9 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren, and 2 great-great-grandchildren; and faithful friend, Tippy, her dog.

Memorials may be given in her name.

Funeral services were Saturday, November 27, 2004, at the Culbertson United Methodist Church with Rev. Daniel Spearow officiating. Burial took place at the Culbertson cemetery.

Dorothy Mae (Dietz) Duval

Dorothy Mae Duval, 86, died Sunday, August 8, 2004 at Community Hospital in McCook.

She was born June 24, 1918 in Harlan County to Philip F. and Margaret (Pyell) Dietz.

She grew up on the family farm near Orleans and attended school at District 60. Over the years she lived in Paxton, Ansley, Sumner and then returned to Orleans in 1973. She moved to McCook in 1996.

She was a member of Peace Lutheran Church, LWML Guild and Peace Lutheran Quilters. She was also a member of the Red Hat Society.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husbands, Harold Mars, Eugene Welte and William Duval; a grandson, Jackie Mars; three brothers, Philip Dietz, Louis Dietz & Paul Dietz; two sisters, Lula Fritzen and Minnie Claypool; and a special son-in-law, Arlus Hueftle.

Survivors include: four daughters, Dollene Stamm and friend Raymond Muths of Imperial, Dorene Hueftle of McCook, Marjean Grant and husband Richard of Ansley and Judy Stunkel and husband Dennis of Broken Bow; four sons, Raymond Mars and wife Sue of Brandon, Miss., Donald Mars and wife Gerda of Taft, Tenn., Neal Mars and wife Loretta of El Centro, Calif. and Bill Welte and wife Esther of Clairmore, Okla.; three brothers, Eddie Dietz and wife Alice of Orleans, Robert Dietz and wife Donna of Alma and Lawrence Dietz and wife Donna of Orleans; two sisters, Alice Higby and husband Velvin of Alma and Pauline Holterman and husband Orville of Long Island, Kans.; 21 grandchildren, Pamela, Preston, Listy, Karmela, Todd, Donelle, Stacey, Denise, Teresa, Rashelle, Andy, Wendy, Robert, Ann, Wade, Dawn, Veronica, Neal Jr., Libi, Lori & Tracy; 32 great-grandchildren; six step-great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; many nieces, nephews and cousins; and special friends Mildred Niermeier and Mildred (Rucker) Myers.

Funeral services were Friday at Peace Lutheran Church with Pastor Randy Wahl officiating. Burial took place in the Orleans cemetery.

Memorials are being accepted in her name.

Terry Wayne Dyer

Terry Wayne Dyer died Saturday, January 29, 2005 at Premier Estates Senior Living in North Platte. He was 58 years old.

Terry was born on July 14, 1946 at Dennison, Texas to Elbert Washington and Virgie Ethel (Foxx) Dyer.

On October 10, 1975, he married Dixie L. Matson at Guyman, Oklahoma. They moved to the McCook community in 1998. Terry was a self-employed handyman doing such jobs as painting, mowing, janitor work, mechanic and truck driving. He enjoyed fishing in his spare time.

Preceding him in death were his parents and 12 brothers and sisters.

Survivors include his wife, Dixie Dyer of McCook; son, John Elbert Dyer of McCook; daughter, Cathy Louise and husband, Larry Schutz, of Cambridge; and one granddaughter, Elizabeth Jane Schutz.

In Lieu of flowers memorials are being accepted in his name.

Funeral service were Wednesday at Carpenter Breland Chapel with Rev. Dr. Stanley Upchurch. Burial took place Friday, February 4th at Llano cemetery in Amarillo, TX.

Idaline Ruth (Martin) Egan

Idalene Ruth Egan, 98, of McCook, died on Saturday, July 9, 2005 at Hillcrest Nursing Home.

She was born January 20, 1907 in Granville, Missouri to George and Ida (Mitts) Martin.

She married William Grant Egan on May 2, 1925, at Oberlin, Kansas. To this union one son, Robert, was born. They made their home in McCook where they were owners and operators of a plumbing business.

She enjoyed going to the Senior Center. She lived at Willowridge Retirement Center for 10 years before moving to Hillcrest in May.

She was preceded in death by her husband William in 1976; her parents; two sisters, Wilma Yost and Velma Horn.

Survivors include her son Robert Egan and wife, Joan, of Lakewood, Colorado; and one grandson, Thomas Egan and wife, Lauren, of Broomfield, CO.

Memorials can be given in her memory to Willowridge Retirement Center.

Services were at St. Alban’s Episcopal Church in McCook, on Wednesday, July 13, 2005, with the Rev. Sam Williams officiating. Burial took place at Memorial Park cemetery in McCook
