Zelma Pauline (Burton) Esch

Zelma “Pauline” Esch died Saturday, July 23, 2005 at Hillcrest Nursing Home. She was 88 years old.

Pauline was born on January 30, 1917in Frontier County, the daughter of Arthur E. and Myrtle Gladys (Branscom) Burton. She grew up in the Zion Hill area, attended country school, and graduated from Red Willow High School in 1935. She taught in a country school in Red Willow County for two years.

She married Carl Esch on March 21, 1937 at St. John’s Lutheran Church at Ash Creek. After their marriage, they farmed north of Red Willow School for two years, then northwest of Danbury for four years, then seven years south of Red Willow until purchasing a farm one mile south of Indianola in 1951. She lived on this farm until 1994 and then moved into Indianola.

Pauline was a member of Peace Lutheran Church and the Grand Generation.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Carl; one brother, Cecil; and two sisters, Ethel Crocker and Leona Mathana.

Survivors include two sons Don Esch and wife, Ila of Homer and Rodney Esch and wife, Rosemary of Arlington; two daughters, Joyce Esch of Des Moines, WA and Karen and husband, Richard Cummins of Indianola; six grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren; three step-grandchildren and eight step-great-grandchildren; four sisters, Letha Hofman of Cheyenne, WY, Betty and husband, Harold Brauer, of Westminster, CO, Lila and husband, Norman Leibrandt of McCook, and Joanne and husband, Don Troyer, of Denver, CO; and one aunt, Doris Peterson of Curtis.

Memorials may be given in her name.

Funeral service were Tuesday, July 26, 2005, at Peace Lutheran Church with Pastor Randy Wahl officiating. Burial took place in Riverside cemetery.

Carpenter Breland was in charge of the arrangements.

Thelma T (Teaford) Adams

Thelma T. Adams died Friday, September 23, 2005, at Hillcrest Nursing Home. She was 97 years old.

Thelma was born on January 4, 1908, at Purdum, NE to Samuel Henry and Grace Adelaide (Oldham) Teaford. She graduated from Lincoln High School in 1926.

She married Raymond P. Walter in 1928 at Kansas City. He preceded her in death in 1988. She married James S. Adams in Las Vegas on April 15, 1992.

Thelma was a member of the McCook Memorial United Methodist Church and United Methodist Women. She played the organ and piano and sang in the church choir. She enjoyed sewing, music, china painting and visiting with family.

Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband, Raymond; one son, Rodney Walter; one daughter, Elaine Botts; two brothers, Raymond and Everett Teaford; and two sisters, Helen Keller and Mariam Pruitt.

Survivors include her husband, James Adams of McCook; son-in-law Dean Botts of McCook; one step-son, Alan Adams and wife, Annie, of Silverthorn, CO; one step-daughter, Phyllis Schwarz and husband, Gerald, of Calloway; five grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, six step-grandchildren and 13 step-great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be given in her name.

Funeral services were Tuesday, Sept. 27, 9:30 a.m. at Memorial United Methodist Church in McCook with the Rev. Dr. Jeff Thurman officiating. Funeral service at Purdum United Methodist Church of Christ was Tuesday afternoon at 3:00 p.m. with Pastor Judy Cook officiating. Also officiating for both services was Pastor Jerry Schwarz. Burial took place in the Purdum cemetery.

Elmer A. Alberts

Elmer A. Alberts, 84 of Palisade died Saturday (March 18, 2006) at Community Hospital in McCook.

He was born August 4, 1921 at Culbertson to Harmon J. and Hinrika (Groothuis) Alberts. He was baptized and confirmed in St. John’s Lutheran Church in Culbertson and attended District 75 and Lutheran Christian Day School and graduated from Culbertson High School in 1940.

He married Leola H. Wittwer in Culbertson at St. John’s Lutheran Church on June 18, 1946. They farmed west of Culbertson until 1950 when they moved to a farm northeast of Palisade. In 1970 his son Byron joined the farming operation. Elmer and Leola moved into Palisade in 1989. He always took an active part and interest in the farm.

He was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church in Palisade and had served as church officers and elder. He also served on School District 14 school board and Hayes County Extension Board.

He enjoyed his family, fishing, woodworking, and gardening.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Kirwin; 6 brothers Andrew, Harm, John, Walter, Albert and an infant; 5 sisters Dora, Ella, Etta and two infants; and one infant grandson.

Survivors include his wife Leola of Palisade; a son, Byron and wife Debra Alberts of Palisade; two daughters Janice and husband Gary Sines of Jefferson City, MO., and Sherry and husband Wayne Larson of Lincoln; ten grandchildren and two great-grandchildren and many relatives and friends.

Memorials will be given to Lutheran Hour Ministries.

Funeral services were Friday, 11 a.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church in Palisade with Pastor Greg Stuckwisch officiating. Burial was in the Palisade cemetery.

Sylvia (Little) Altman

Sylvia Altman died Monday, December 26, 2005, at Bryan LGH East in Lincoln. She was 88 years old.

Sylvia was born December 6, 1917, to Mary (Schmidt) and Hugh E. Little. She graduated from Hayes Center High School in 1934 and St. Francis School of Nursing in 1941, receiving her degree as a Registered Nurse. She worked in hospitals in Grand Island, Butte, MT., Omaha and McCook.

On December 13, 1941, she married Adolph Joseph Altman in Omaha. To this union two children were born. After Adolph was discharged from the service they made their home on a farm in Hayes County near Culbertson. Sylvia was a homemaker and a nurse for Community Hospital in McCook. After 28 years of service she retired in 1982.

She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and St. Patrick’s Catholic Church. She was also a member of the Veteran’s of Foreign War Auxiliary of Culbertson and Daughters of the Union Veterans. In her free time she enjoyed all kinds of needle work, including crocheting, tatting, quilting and sewing.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Adolph; parents, Mary and Hugh Little; brother, Dale Little; and step-mother, Martha West.

Survivors include one son, James Altman of Lafayette, LA; one daughter, Patricia and husband, Charlie Powers, of McCook; one sister Rose Smith of Delta, CO; six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Memorials can be given in her name to the Salvation Army, VFW Auxiliary in Culbertson or American Heart Association.

Mass of Christian Burial took place at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in McCook, Thursday, December 29, 2005, 10:30 a.m. with Father Gary Brethour officiating. Burial was in the Hayes Center cemetery.

Joy Mae (DeOss) Arendell

Joy Mae (DeOss) Burton Arendell, 76 died Monday, February 20, 2006 at Mount Carmel Nursing Home in Kearney.

Joy was born April 24, 1929 to Francis Henry and Ollie Mae (McClellan) DeOss in Holbrook, NE. Joy was the third of four children.

Joy grew up in Holbrook and attended Holbrook Public School graduating in 1947. In 1948 Joy completed training as an Airline Communications Stenographer in Omaha, NE.

On Oct. 8, 1948 Joy married Ralph Myrl Burton. To this union five children were born; Jacqueline Rae, Ralph Michael, Max Dewayne, William Joe, and Joy Lynn. As a single parent in the 1970's, Joy often worked two jobs at once in order to support her children. On Sept. 27, 1976 Joy married Gilbert LeRoy (Roy) Arendell. Joy worked as a nurse’s aide, as well as at TRW, Dayco, and Cornbelt Chemical prior to her retirement.

Joy was a member of the Evangelical Free Church in McCook, and she treasured the friendship and support shown to her. Joy was a loving and positive force in her children's lives, and always encouraged them to achieve as much as possible. Although Joy's life was hard at times, she kept her faith in God, her sense of humor, and did the best she could. Joy delighted at the birth of each grandchild, and enjoyed spoiling them as much as she could. In 1995 Joy moved into Plum Creek Care Home in Lexington. In 1997 Joy moved to Mount Carmel Nursing Home in Kearney, NE where she lived until her death.

Joy was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Roy, on Oct. 5, 1985, sister, Mary Lou Walker on Sept. 4, 1993, a sister-in-law, Mrs. Jack (Lola) DeOss, and a niece, Ramona (Walker) Allerheiligen on Oct. 4, 1993.

Joy is survived by her children; Jacque Shepherd of Kearney, NE., Ralph "Mike" Burton of Idaho Springs, CO., Max Burton of McCook, William "Bill" Burton and wife Sunni of Lexington, NE., and Joy Lynn Solko and husband Patrick of Herndon, KS., her brothers Jack DeOss of Holbrook, NE., William "Joe" DeOss of Garden Grove, CA; thirteen grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren.

Memorial services were Friday at 2 p.m. at Carpenter Breland Chapel in McCook with Pastor Eddie Wright officiating. Inurnment took place at the Indianola cemetery.

Memorials may be given in her name.

Bruce William Atkins

Bruce William Atkins died Saturday, April 15, 2006 at the Veteran’s Hospital in Omaha. He was 75 years old.

Bruce was born on November 27, 1930, at Malta Ridge, New York to William and Mattie (Long-Caudwell) Atkins. After his high school graduation he entered the United States Army on May 22, 1951 and served during the Korean Conflict. He was honorably discharged on March 21, 1957.

On June 19, 1967, he married Emma Parde at Warez, New Mexico. Bruce was a heavy equipment mechanic for Western Engineering of North Platte and McCook Equity as a mechanic for several years. He had lived in the McCook community for the past 40 years. He was a member of the McCook Eagles Club.

Preceding him in death were his parents, William and Mattie Atkins; wife, Emma Atkins in 2003; step-son, Virgil Parde; step-son-law, Paul Johnson; and two sisters, Ruth Carpenter and Ilene Atkins.

Survivors include his nieces and nephews, Lorena and Eric Jones of New London, Conn., Donna Delaney, Joe Delaney, and Roy Carpenter all of New York; step-sons, Eldon Parde and wife, Sharon, of McCook and Lelond Parde, and wife, Darlene, of Mira Loma, CA; step-daughter, Marleen and husband, Ben Garcia, of McCook; 13 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be given in his name.

Memorial services were Friday, April 21, 2006, at 10:00 a.m. at Carpenter Breland Chapel with Jerry Beckenhauer officiating. Inurnment took place at Fort McPherson National cemetery, Maxwell, NE at 1:00 p.m.

Doris B. Awtry

Doris B. Awtry of McCook died Saturday, March 11, 2006 at Great Plains Regional Medical Center in North Platte. She was 81 years old.

She was born October 10, 1924 at Curtis to Peter C. and Anna Elsie (Rossen) Nelsen. She grew up in Curtis and graduated from the University of Nebraska School of Agriculture High School in 1942.

She married Gerald W. Awtry September 26, 1943 at Ft. Wayne, Indiana. They moved from Curtis to McCook in 1947. To this union three children, Sandra, Dennis and Wayne were born.

She was a member of Memorial United Methodist Church. Since 1983 she has sold Avon products. She enjoyed bowling and spending time with her children and grandchildren and many friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband (Dec. 6, 1997), her parents; two brothers, Kenneth and LeRoy and a sister, Margaret.

Survivors include: a daughter, Sandy and husband Dick Foran of North Platte; and two sons, Dennis and wife Donna Awtry of North Platte and Wayne Awtry and Elaine Wells of McCook; a brother, Marion and wife Wanda Nelsen of Curtis; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

In Lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to American Heart Association and the American Cancer Society.

Memorial services were Thursday at 10 a.m. at Carpenter Breland Chapel in McCook with the Rev. Dr. Jeff Thurman officiating. Inurnment took place at Fort McPherson cemetery in Maxwell.

Jay Dee Bailey

Jay Dee Bailey was born December 7, 1938 in a house in Stratton, Nebraska to Justus D. and Marjorie Pearl Bailey. He passed away at Benkelman Hospital on March 9, 2006 at the age of 67.

The family moved to Colorado when Jay was 2 years old, and Jay graduated from Arvada High School in 1956.

Jay was proud to have served his country in the US Navy from 1956 to 1962. He saw much of the world while on the aircraft carrier Bon Homme Richard.

Jay worked for Coors Brewery in Colorado for over fifteen years. He moved to Michigan and worked for General Motors and its subsidiaries until his retirement.

Jay moved back to Nebraska where he spent his retirement enjoying friends and family and building his beloved Indian Head Ranch.

Preceding him in death are his parents, Justus and Marjorie Bailey and his daughter Terri Lin Bailey.

Survivors include his son Joseph D Bailey, Aunts, Uncles, Cousins, and friends.

He was cremated and there were no services. His final resting place was on a hilltop at the Indian Head Ranch.

Candice L. (Borchers) Baltzell

Candice L. Baltzell, 58, of McCook, died Tuesday, February 14, 2006 at Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney, Nebraska, following a brief illness.

Mrs. Baltzell was born on April 6, 1947 in Kankakee, Illinois, the daughter of Orville and Eve (Elliott) Borchers. She was a 1965 graduate of East Richland High School in Olney, Illinois and attended Olney Central College. She graduated from Wartburg College in Waverly, Iowa, in 1967 and then completed dental assisting courses in Chicago. She married Dr. Robert Baltzell on December 27, 1967 in Charles City, Iowa. He preceded her in death on May 15, 2004.

Mrs. Baltzell was a chairside assistant in her husband’s dental practice for 25 years. She enjoyed traveling and gardening and was an avid antique collector. She was a member of the United Methodist Church in McCook. She was a member of the Chapter GY-PEO and the Good Earth Gardeners. She was a loving wife, daughter, sister, aunt, and friend and was devoted to her schnauzer, Hansie. Candy had a wonderful sense of humor and a great zest for life.

She is survived by her mother, Eve Garden of Charles City, Iowa; brother, Max Brewer and his wife Donna of Naples, Florida; nephew, Mark Brewer and his wife Barb of Monticello, Indiana; niece, Beth Anne Zirkle of Gilman, Illinois; mother-in-law, Virginia Baltzell of Leesburg, Florida; 1 great-niece; 4 great-nephews; and many cousins, step-brothers, and step-sisters.

Mrs. Baltzell was preceded in death by her husband, father, and grandparents.

Memorial services will be held at a later date. Memorials may be made to the McCook Humane Society or Hospice of McCook.
