Dr. Robert Lawrence Baltzell

Dr. Robert L. Baltzell (Dr. Bob), age 61, died May 15, 2004 at Community Hospital in McCook, Nebraska, following a two year battle with cancer.

Dr. Baltzell was born July 30, 1942 in Charles City, Iowa to Dr. Winston C. Baltzell and Virginia (Hampton) Baltzell. He graduated from Charles City High School in 1960, where he was a member of the National Honor Society and received the Men’s Citizenship award. He attended Grinnell College in Iowa and graduated from the University of Iowa in 1964. He graduated from the University Of Iowa College Of Dentistry in 1969. He served his family dentistry residency at the University Of Chicago Hospitals. He practiced dentistry for 34 years in New Hampshire and in Charles City, Iowa, and for the past 10 years in McCook.

He was united in marriage to Candice Borchers on December 27, 1967 at the United Methodist Church in Charles City, Iowa. Candice worked as his dental assistant for 25 years.

Dr. Baltzell was active in organized dentistry, serving on the board of the Nebraska Academy of General Dentistry and as a delegate to the Nebraska Dental Association. He was a member of the Oilbelt Study Club of Nebraska and Kansas. He was a member of the United Methodist Church where he sang in the choir. He was a member of the McCook Rotary Club and the trumpet player in the McCook brass quintet. He was a past member of the Prairie Statesmen Choir. Dr. Baltzell loved music, camping, fishing, hiking, golf, canoeing, and working on the family farms. He was a pilot. He was active in scouting and was a recipient of the Eagle Scout award.

He is survived by his wife Candice: his mother, Virginia Baltzell of Leesburg, Florida; a brother, Dr. James Baltzell and wife Karin of Chanhassen, Minnesota; a sister, Nancy Walters and husband James of Iowa Falls, Iowa; and his mother-in-law, Eve Garden of Charles City, Iowa.

He was preceded in death by his father. He was a loving uncle to 10 nieces and nephews and daddy to his schnauzer Hansie.

A memorial celebration was held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, May 22, 2004 at the First United Methodist Church in McCook with The Reverend Dr. Jeff Thurman officiating.

Memorials may be sent to Hospice of McCook.

Linda Suzanne (McHarness) Dillsaver

Linda Suzanne (McHarness) Dillsaver died (July 21, 2006) at Mary Lanning Hospital in Hastings. She was 56.

She was born January 24, 1950 in McCook to Howard and Evelyn (O’Brien) McHarness. She graduated from Hayes Center High School in 1968. On November 30, 1975, she married Michael Witt of Palisade, to this union two daughters were born, Melissa Anne and Lindsey Nicole. She worked in various nursing homes and was a caregiver most of her life.

She was a member of the VFW Auxiliary and the United Methodist Church, both of Palisade. As a youth she was a member of the Congregational Church of Palisade

She was preceded in death by her parents, Howard and Evelyn.

Survivors include her daughters, Melissa Markee and husband, Brad of Imperial, Lindsey Tropf and husband, Derrick of Buffalo, Missouri; sister, Eileen Jepsen and husband, Pete of Curtis; nieces, Tammy, Tricia, Tina; three grandchildren, Hailey Markee, Tamera and Logan Tropf; and two cousins, Tracy Neverve and wife, Judy of Hayes Center, Noreen Christner and husband, Wayne of Wauneta.

Memorials were to be given in her name.

Memorial services were at Carpenter Breland Funeral Home Thursday, July 27, 2006, with Pastor Fay Ann Blaylock officiating. Inurnment took place at the Hayes Center cemetery.

Lester Eugene Daniel

Lester Eugene Daniel “Butch” died Thursday, December 14, 2006 at McCook Community Hospital. He was 60 years old.

He was born December 28, 1945 to Orval R. and Goldie M. (Reeder) Daniel in Ogallala, Nebraska. He spent his childhood growing up in western Nebraska and Colorado.

Lester entered the service when he was 17 years of age and was a proud member of the Army Special Forces. He spent a total of 28 years serving as a proud soldier and was wounded more than once while doing so. His valor, heroic and meritorious achievements are apparent in the medals received. The Purple Heart, Bronze Star, Meritorious Service, Army Commendation, Presidential Unit Commendation Award, Presidential Unit Citation, Vietnam Gallantry Cross with Palm plus many, many more. Valor, Heroic or meritorious achievement or service are listed as descriptions of the majority of the awards presented to him.

Lester retired from the military on July 31, 1990 and his commitment to the armed forces was still very apparent. At the time of his retirement he was a Master Sergeant.

Hunting, fishing and spending time in the outdoors were some of his favorite pastimes. His shop was the place you found him the most. He was continuously working on something new. Fixing a new room, adding a porch, or something to repair on their home. Lester also built beautiful unique pieces of rustic furniture from logs that are being used in their home.

Lester married Christine Spannagl and to this union a son Michael was born. Lester later married Ulrike “Betsy” (Strehle) King in North Carolina and helped raise her three children: Bettina, Henry and Charles.

Lester and Betsy lived in the Durango, Colorado area after retiring from the military. They moved to Palisade, Nebraska in 2000 and Lester worked for the Hayes County Department of Roads for the last few years.

Lester is preceded in death by his father Orville “Pete” and three sisters: Donna Mae Garton, Janice Decker and Irene Fisher.

Survivors are his wife Betsy of Palisade; son Michael Daniel and wife, Angel of Panama City, FL; step-children Bettina McDonald and husband, Ellis of Fayetteville, NC, Henry Strehle and wife Paula of Buzzard Bay, MA and Charles King and wife, Tess of Honolulu, HI; four grandchildren; mother Goldie Daniel of Wauneta; sisters Imogene Peres of McCook, Eithel Stinnette of Ogallala, Ethel Stier and husband George of Longmont, CO; Brothers, Jack Daniel and wife Colleen of Loveland, CO, Wayne Daniel and wife Joann of Hamlet, Harland Daniel and wife Mary Lou of Palisade, Bobby Achilles in California, and Leroy Achilles; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Memorials may be given to the Palisade American Legion.

Funeral services were Wednesday, December 20, 2006, 10:30 a.m. at the Palisade United Methodist Church with Rev. Judy Dye officiating. Burial took place in Meadow Lawn cemetery in Hamlet.

Maurice Fulton Couse

Maurice Fulton Couse passed away at his home in McCook, December 2, 2006 at the age of 74. With his wife and children by his side.

He was born April 14, 1932 at the Butler-Couse Homestead east of McCook, in Red Willow County to Roger & Myrle (Stuart) Couse. He worked for the Bureau of Reclamation and farmed with his dad until joining the United States Air force in 1952.

Maurice served in Korea as Flight Engineer & Crew Chief with the B-26 Night Intruder Bomber with the 17th Bombardment Wing. He flew three missions and later was stationed in Albuquerque N.M. with 2925 Test Group-Atomic. In 1956 he returned to Nebraska he worked for CB&Q; Railroad and farmed with his father. March 26th 1959 he married Wavalee Howell in McCook they resided on the family farm until 1983. He worked for Dayco and the United States Post Office as a Rural Mail Carrier until his retirement in 1996.

Maurice was preceded in death by a daughter-in-law, Rita Couse and his parents.

Survivors are his wife of 47 years, Wavalee; two daughters, Deborah Rogers and husband, Bill of Bartley, Marlyn Peters and husband, Rod of McCook, three sons, Bob Kerr and wife, Tammy of McCook, Scott Couse and Sherry Halstead of North Platte, Ryan Couse of Central City; two sisters, Marilyn Petersen, Barbara Wilson and husband, Gene of Parker, CO. and two brothers, Stuart Couse and wife, Bobbie of Littleton CO., Virgil Couse and wife, Alice of Denver Co.; 11 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and special dog, Cassie “Killer”.

Maurice always found time for his grandchildren’s activities, fishing, camping, and his coffee group. He will always be remembered for his great love of his family, his sense of humor, airplanes, birds, and classical music.

Services were Wednesday, December 6, 2006 at Carpenter Breland Funeral Home Chapel in McCook at 10:00 a.m. with Jerry Beckenhauer officiating. Burial took place in Riverview cemetery.

Memorial may be given in his name to McCook Hospice.

George Martin Colling

George Martin Colling, died Tuesday, June 20, 2006 at the Cambridge Manor. He was 84 years old.

George was born on August 20, 1921, at McCook to Bernard N. and Helen (Kennedy) Colling. He attended rural school District 47 southeast of McCook

He entered the US Navy on July 28, 1942, where he served aboard the #680 Sub-Chaser off the east coast of the United States during World War II. He served as the ship’s cook. He was honorably discharged on December 4, 1945. After his discharge, he returned to Frontier County where he farmed until his retirement.

George was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church.

Preceding him in death were his parents, Bernard and Helen Colling; five brothers, Harlan and wife, Rosemary, Jerald, Frank, Gene, and John Colling; one sister, Helen and her husband, Fred Martin; and two brothers-in-law, Anton Blume and Raymond Ritter.

Survivors include his two brothers, Richard Colling and wife, Alfreda, and Joseph Colling and wife, Eileen, all of McCook; two sisters, Catherine Blume of McCook and Bernadine Ritter of Russell, KS; two sisters-in-law, Mary Colling of McCook and Dorothy Colling of Omaha; numerous nephews, nieces, relatives and a host of friends.

Memorials may be given in his name.

Rosary was Thursday at Carpenter Breland Chapel. Mass of Christian Burial was Friday, June 23, 2006, 10:30 a.m. at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church with Father Paul Colling officiating. Burial took place in Calvary cemetery.

Cody Raymond Coats

Cody Raymond Coats died Friday, August 18, 2006, at Danbury as a result of a vehicle accident. He was 14 years old.

Cody was born on September 3, 1991, at Ogden, Utah to David Todd Dominguez and Debbie Sue Hodson. He was living at Danbury at the time of his death.

Cody was a member of the sophomore class at Southwest Public Schools. He enjoyed playing pool, riding bikes and making videos.

Preceding him in death were his maternal grandparents, Otis and Louise Hodson and paternal grandfather, William Dominguez.

Survivors include his mother, Debbie Coats of Danbury; his father, David Dominguez of Ogden, UT; one sister, Alexis Coats and husband, Isaac Weyeneth of McCook; two brothers, Bryan and Devin Coats of Danbury; grandmother, Roma Dominguez of Ogden; aunts and uncles, Anna and Doug Smith of Aurora, CO, Monna Pepper of Cedaredge, CO, Linda and Mike Houghton of Aurora, Betty Hodson of Craig, CO, Kathy and Randy Tabuchi of Rock Springs, WY and Bill and Jackie Hodson of Cedaredge; and his beloved dog, Ross.

Memorials may be given in his name.

Funeral services were Monday, August 21, 2006, 2:00 p.m. at Carpenter Breland Chapel with Rev. Keith Theobald officiating. Burial took place in the Danbury-Marion cemetery.

Twila Jean (Ferguson) Carter

Twila Jean Carter of Palisade, died Thursday, September 14, 2006 at the Central City Care Center. She was 79 years old.

She was born, June 19, 1927 at Hamlet to Samuel Clifford and Anna (Jader) Ferguson. She grew up in Palisade, attended and graduated from Palisade High School in 1947. She earned a teaching certificate from Kearney State College.

She married Frank F. Carter in Palisade on January 9, 1947. To this union three children were born. She was a lifelong resident of Palisade. She worked for the Hayes Center ASCS office for 27 years and retired in 1987.

She was a member of the United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women, Eastern Star, Palisade Community Service Club, Home Study Club and numerous other organizations.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Lois Bishop; and seven brothers, Carroll, Cleo (Dutch), Dale, Dean, Donald, Irvin & Merle (all of whom served in WW II).

Survivors include her husband, Frank of Grand Island; a son, Doug Carter and wife Colleen of Hastings; two daughters, Lynn Jorgensen and husband Tom of Plano, TX, and Terri Simpson and husband Bill of Richardson, TX; three sisters, Clarice Bauer of McCook, Joyce Coe and husband DeWayne of North Platte and Joan Laumann and husband Ted of Sterling, CO; seven beloved grandchildren: Jennifer Jorgensen Bailey and husband Jeremy, Michael Jorgensen, Melanie Carter Wiegert and husband Chris, Matt Carter and wife Stephanie, Dan Carter, Rebecca Simpson and Ashley Simpson; five great-grandchildren: Aidan and Liam Bailey, McKenna Jorgensen, Taylor Blanchard and Audrey Carter.

Memorials may be given in her name.

Funeral services were Saturday at the Palisade United Methodist Church with Pastor Judy Dye officiating. Burial took place in the Palisade cemetery.

Bruce Gerald Carlson

Bruce Gerald Carlson, 55, died Wednesday, December 13, 2006 at his home in McCook.

Bruce was born on June 25, 1951, in Clarinda, Iowa to Donald and Betty (Eggers) Stone.

On September 22, 1957, Betty married Kenneth Verner Carlson in Atwood, Kansas. Bruce and his siblings were adopted by Kenneth on June 21, 1958.

Bruce was preceded in death by his grandparents; and mother, Betty in 1996.

Survivors include his father, Kenneth of McCook; and two sisters, Carol Koerperich of Wilsonville and Norma and husband, Ralph Crowe, of Richland, WA.

His body was cremated and a private family inurnment was held in the Wilsonvillle cemetery.

Memorials may be given in his name and sent to the funeral home.

Alexander Miller Campbell

Alexander Miller Campbell died Thursday, September 21, 2006, at Community Hospital in McCook. He was a loving father, good neighbor, and generous friend. He was 83 years old.

Alex was born on November 23, 1922, in Trenton, to McFarland and Grace (Miller) Campbell. He was a graduate of McCook High School. He served in the Philippines in the US Navy during World War II, and was honorably discharged in 1947.

On April 12, 1948, he married Gloria Hoff. They had one daughter, Laura.

Alex was a lifetime farmer and rancher near Culbertson. He raised Quarter horses and was a member of the American Quarter Horse Association.

Alex loved the sport of team roping, and over the past forty years, he won many trophies, buckles, and saddles. He was very generous in giving his time and expertise to help young horsemen and ropers.

Preceding him in death were his parents, McFarland and Grace Campbell; one brother, John Campbell; and one sister, Evalouise Campbell.

Survivors include his daughter, Laura Campbell of Peterborough, NH; and a host of friends.

Memorial service were Wednesday, September 27, 2006, at 11:00 a.m. at Carpenter Breland Chapel.
