Ruth Elaine (Joy) Budig

Ruth Elaine Budig died Monday (Oct. 30, 2006) at the Cambridge Memorial Hospital in Cambridge Nebraska.

She was born April 4, 1923 in Culbertson, Nebraska and was the daughter of Ira and Flossie (Korell) Joy. She graduated from Culbertson High School.

On April 4, 1948 she married Carl Budig in McCook, Nebraska. Together they owned and operated the Budig Motor Company until 1975. In 1979 they moved to Mesa, Arizona. Elaine returned to Nebraska in 2003 to be closer to her family.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Carl in December 16, 1993, one sister, Wilma Hoyt and brothers, Willard and Dean Joy.

She is survived by one sister, Iris Thompson and twin brother, Wayne Joy; three daughters, Carlaine and husband, Howie Swinton of Puerto Penascu, Mexico; Lynda and husband, Bill Baumbach of Indianola and Debra and husband, George Ward of Hastings; 6 grandchildren Chris Wacker of Krebs, Oklahoma; Christina Wacker of Tucson, Arizona; Nathan Baumbach of Omaha; Cecily Bolte of Santa Fe, New Mexico; Chelsey Cerny of Lincoln; Alyssa Ward of Great Bend, Kansas; 4 great-grandchildren Brianna, Madelyn, Lauren and Nicholas; nieces; nephews; and numerous relatives and friends.

Memorial services were Wednesday, November 1, 2006 at St. Albans Episcopal Church at 11:00 a.m. with the Rev. Sam Williams officiating. Inurnment followed in the St. Alban’s Columbarium.

Memorials may be given to Tri-Valley Health Systems in Cambridge.

Raymond Lyle Bridgmon

Raymond Lyle Bridgmon of Palisade died Sunday, November 26, 2006 at the Chase County Hospital, Imperial, Nebraska. He was 78 years old.

He was born May 26, 1928 at Palisade to George Ervin Bridgmon and Jean Fulton Chartraw. He grew up in Palisade and graduated from the Palisade High School in 1946.

He entered the US Air Force in 1946 and served during World War II. He was honorably discharged in 1949.

He married Ruth Marie Edghill at Palisade on January 10, 1948. To this union three children were born. He lived most of his adult life in the Denver area. After his retirement in 1997, he moved back to Palisade.

Raymond was a truck driver for Pizza Hut and Safeway. He loved wood working, fishing, hunting, and restoring automobiles. He also enjoyed being with his family and watching the Denver Broncos and Nebraska Cornhuskers Football Games.

He was preceded in death by his parents, George and Jean Bridgmon; one son, Rick Bridgmon in 2005; one brother, Howard Bridgmon; and two sisters Gladys Myers and Bonnie Bridgmon.

Survivors include: his wife Ruth of Palisade; a son Craig Bridgmon and wife Barbara of Colorado Springs, Colorado; daughter Kristy Bridgmon of Denver, Colorado; one sister Wilma Phares of Salem, Oregon; three grandchildren and one great-grandchild, Aaron Bridgmon and wife, Jennifer and their son, Joshua of Colorado Springs, CO, Jerrad Bridgmon and wife, Krista, of Colorado Springs, CO and Lacey Bridgmon of Edmond, OK; and a host of relatives and friends.

Memorials may be given in his name.

Funeral services were Thursday, November 30, 2006, at 11:00 a.m., at the United Methodist Church in Palisade. A military honor guard followed the service at the church.

Robert L. Bowker

Robert L. Bowker, died Tuesday, October 3, 2006, in his home. He was 77.

Robert was born March 26, 1929 in Beaver City, the son of Robert R. and Marie (John) Bowker.

The family moved to Hendley where Robert lived until age eight, when the family moved to Ponca City, Okla., where he spent the rest of his childhood and graduated from High School and then attended Northern Oklahoma Community College. The family moved to McCook in 1949 where he spent the remainder of his life.

He married Joanne Denman of Cambridge on October 10, 1953.

He was a long time employee of the McCook Equity Exchange where he managed the Tractor and Implement Department. He was a Supervisor at Dayco from 1973 to 1986.

He was a member of First Christian Church and served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War and was a member of the VFW.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Marie Bowker; and wife, Joanne on September 12, 1996.

Survivors include three daughters, Cindy Moody and husband, Greg of McCook, Karen Denker and husband, Lee of Wauneta, Patty Jass and husband, Kevin of Greeley, Colorado; brother, Jerry Bowker and wife, Jan of Knoxville, Tenn; grandchildren, Jeff Moody of Lincoln, Lori Rousselle and husband Tanner of Lincoln, Chris Manker of Kansas City, Kansas, Bryan Jass of Denver, Colo, Stacy Jass, Craig Jass both of Greeley, Colo; great-granddaughter, Linden Rousselle of Lincoln.

Memorials may be given in his name.

Funeral services were Friday, October 6, 2006, 2:00 p.m. at Carpenter Breland Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Clark Bates officiating. Burial at Memorial Park cemetery.

Delores Yvonne (Mitchell) Barger Thompson

Delores Yvonne Barger Thompson, age 76, of McCook, died Tuesday, December 05, 2006, at McCook Community Hospital.

She was born on October 8, 1930, to John Clyde and Helen Melba Jane (Bailey) Mitchell in McCook. She graduated from McCook High School in 1948. She married Roy Charles Barger on June 8, 1949, in Holdrege. To this union were born two sons and two daughters. They lived on a farm northeast of Culbertson during their 36 years of marriage. After the death of Roy, Delores moved to McCook and later married Vincent Donald Thompson on September 18, 1993.

Delores was a member of the McCook Christian Church and the American Legion Auxiliary in Culbertson.

She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Helen; husbands, Roy Barger in 1985, Vincent Thompson in 2004; and sister, Marge Pollard.

She is survived by her four children, Ronald Barger and wife, Connie of Culbertson, Susan Blomstedt and husband, James of Wellfleet, John Barger and wife, Sharon of Lubbock, Texas, and Jeanne Barger of Omaha; ten grandchildren, Christina, Melissa, Randy, Ryan, Ashlynn, Melissa, Charles, Tony, Jason, Chad; and 12 great-grandchildren, Dylan, Katie, Ryan, Hayley, Collin, Zachary, Braxton, Chase, Madison, Ethan, Anna, and Rachel.

Memorials may be given in her name to McCook Heritage Senior Center.

Funeral services were Thursday, December 7, 2006 at 10:30 a.m. at McCook Christian Church with Pastor Clark Bates officiating. Burial took place in the Culbertson cemetery

James B. Ahrens

James B. Ahrens died Wednesday, October 25, 2006, at Community Hospital in McCook. He was 72 years old.

Jim was born on March 12, 1934, at McCook to Frances Henry and Minnie T. (Herron) Ahrens. He attended McCook Schools.

On January 9, 1954, he married Delores F. Fisher at Goodland, Kansas. To this union two children were born. They made their home in McCook where Jim was a carpenter and worked for the North Platte Lumber Company. After his retirement, he worked for the McCook School’s Lunch Program delivering meals to the various school buildings.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Frances and Minnie Ahrens; his wife, Delores Ahrens in 1998; son, DustyLee Ahrens; and one brother, Albert H. Ahrens.

Survivors include his two children, Jim Ahrens and wife, Linda, of North Platte and DeEtte and husband, Joseph Wilson, of Harrison, AK; one sister, Jackie Ahrens of McCook; three grandsons, one step-granddaughter, five great-grandsons; and special friend, Sharon Daugherty.

Memorials may be given in his name.

Funeral services were on Monday, October 30, 2006, 10:00 a.m. at Carpenter Breland Funeral Home with Terry McCorkle officiating. Burial was in Memorial Park cemetery.

Alma Laura (Unger) Ackerman

Alma Laura (Unger) Ackerman, 96, of McCook, died Wednesday, November 15, 2006 at Hillcrest Nursing Home.

Alma was born on December 20, 1909, in the Ash Creek Community south of Indianola in Red Willow County. She was born the 9th child of Frederick and Emma (Tilgner) Unger. She was baptized at St. John’s Ash Creek Lutheran Church and was also confirmed there in 1926. She attended school in Ash Creek and Red Willow.

On September 13, 1928, she married Frederick Ackerman. To this union two daughters were born. They were owners and operators of a motel.

Alma was a member of Ash Creek Lutheran Church, Peace Lutheran Church, and Charter member of Peace Lutheran Women’s Missionary League.

Preceding her in death were her parents, Frederick and Emma Unger; her husband, Frederick Ackerman on December 21, 1984; her daughter, Lois Johnson on October 17, 2006; son-in-law, Garry Wagner; grandson, David Wagner; granddaughter, Laura Hubert Karp; great-granddaughter, Kayla Hubert; five brothers, Gus, Herman, Walter, Charles and Alfred Unger; five sisters, twins Emma and Elizabeth, Pauline Tauber, Clara Baumbach and Lydia Ackerman.

Survivors include her daughter, Eileen and husband, John Hubert, of McCook; son-in-law, Cecil Johnson of Overland Park, Kan.; one sister, Lorraine Groothius of Ogden, Utah; two sisters-in-law, Darlene Unger of Hayes Center and Frances Unger of McCook; six grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren; many nieces, nephews and relatives.

Memorials may be given in her name.

Funeral services were Saturday, November 25, 1:30 p.m. at Peace Lutheran Church in McCook with Pastor Bradley Rick officiating. Burial took place in Memorial Park cemetery.

Leila S. (Thorstenson) Herzog

Leila S. “Miss T” Herzog of Culbertson died Thursday, April 27, 2006 at El Dorado Manor in Trenton. She was 73 years old.

T. was born on November 13, 1932 at Fergus Falls, MN to Olaf H. and Opal Normanda (Rovig) Thorstenson. She graduated from Battle Lake High School. She attended Iowa State College, Kearney State College, and Colorado State College. She earned her Bachelors Degree in secondary education.

On June 5, 1971, she married Edward L. Herzog at McCook. To this union one daughter was born. T. taught in public schools in Iowa and Nebraska as well as being a school counselor for 32 years, retiring in 1989. After her retirement, she became a Mental Health Practitioner at Norton Correction Facility from 1989 to 1994. She was also a mental health support leader for the Nebraska Critical Incidence Stress Management Team.

T. enjoyed being a homemaker and mother. In her free time she enjoyed reading, quilting, crocheting, writing and gardening. She was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church. Other memberships included NSEA, NSEA-R, CISM and CASA.

Preceding her in death were her parents, Olaf and Opal Thorstenson: and adopted grandma, Mabel McDermed.

Survivors include her husband, Ed Herzog of Culbertson; daughter Katherine “Kathy” Herzog of Culbertson; one grandson, Alexander Herzog of Culbertson; one brother, Marlo Thorstenson and wife, Marilyn, of Adams, MN; sister, JoLaine and husband, Earl Hustad, of Battle Lake, MN.

Memorials were to be given in her name to the American Cancer Society.

Rosary was Wednesday, May 3, 7:00 p.m. at Carpenter Breland.

Mass of Christian burial took place Thursday, May 4, 10:00 a.m. at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church with Father Gary Brethour officiating. Inurnment took place in the Culbertson cemetery.

Beverly Ann (Brumfield) Herron

Beverly Ann Herron, age 74, died Sunday, July 9, 2006 at her home after a long battle with cancer.

She was born May 10, 1932 to George and Gladys (Brewer) Brumfield at St. Joseph, Missouri. She graduated from Manual High School in Denver, Colorado in 1950.

She married John M. Herron in Commerce City, Colorado on November 27, 1951. To this union one son, John Timothy, was born.

She was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Past President and Treasurer of VFW Women’s Auxiliary, and a member of Good Sams Club. She enjoyed fishing, traveling, embroidery, and sewing, but most of all she enjoyed spending time with family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, George and Gladys Brumfield; sister, Darlene Sorenson; brother-in-law, Gordon Jones; two nephews, Kevin Bobka and Danny Sorenson.

Survivors include her husband, John M. of McCook; son, John Timothy Herron and wife, Pamela of McCook; grandchildren, John Jason Herron and wife, Jennifer of Jacksonville, North Carolina, Julie Ann Ellis and husband, Bill of Bartley, Jeremiah Herron and wife, Christina of Wayne, Jennifer Herron of McCook; and five great-grandchildren, Brenton, Kaitlynne and Tyler Ellis and Collin and Matthew Herron; brother, Ronald Brumfield and wife, Marlene of Great Falls, Montana; brother-in-law, Mel Sorenson of Ogden, Utah; sisters, Dorothy Sninsky, Wilma Bobka and husband, Richard all of Thornton, Colorado, Donna Jones of Grand Junction, Colorado; and many nieces and nephews.

Memorials were to be given in her name.

Rosary was Thursday at 7:00 p.m.at Carpenter Breland Funeral Home. Mass of Christian Burial took place Friday, July 14, 2006, 10:00 a.m. at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church with Father Gary Brethour officiating.

Erma L. (Damrow) Harder

Erma L. Harder, 82, passed away Saturday, November 25, 2006, at Columbus Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Columbus, Wisconsin.

She was born May 5, 1924, in Dundy County to Louis and Emma (Delabar) Damrow.

On June 16, 1942, she married Albert G. Harder at Benkelman, Nebraska. To this union three children were born.

Erma was a longtime McCook resident and a member of the First Congregational Church.

Preceding her in death was her husband, Albert in 2004; parents, Louis and Emma Damrow; daughter, Lynn Karon Harder; brothers: Louis Damrow, Bill Damrow, Henry Damrow, Raymond Damrow, and Edward Damrow; and sisters: Francie Damrow, Helen Damrow, Fern Keiser, and Anna Brunkhorst.

Survivors include two sons, Wilbert Harder and wife, Carol, of Aberdeen, South Dakota and Gale Harder and wife, Shirley, of Marshall, Wisconsin; sister, Ida Bartels of Wauneta, Nebraska; sister-in-law Lucille Harley of Salem, Oregon; four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; and many other relatives and friends.

In lieu of flowers, memorials were given in Erma’s name to the First Congregational Church or to the Alzheimer’s Association.

Services to celebrate Erma’s life were Friday, Dec. 1, at 10:00 a.m. at the First Congregational Church in McCook, Nebraska, with Steve Bales officiating. Interment followed at Fort McPherson National cemetery in Maxwell, Nebraska at 2:00 p.m.

The family wishes to express their heartfelt thanks to the caring staff of Columbus Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.
