D. June (Hauxwell) Mustion

Dorothy “June” Mustion of Culbertson died Sunday, September 24, 2006, at Hillcrest Nursing Home. She was 81 years old.

June was born on August 12, 1925, at McCook, to Rue and Jenny (Loomis) Hauxwell. She graduated from Red Willow High School in 1941. She taught in rural schools for nine years. .

On June 5, 1946, she married Fred Willis Mustion at the Indianola Church of Christ. To this union two children were born. They made their home near Culbertson where she was a homemaker and had an instrumental part of their farming operation.

June was a member of the Church of Christ, Ladies Missionary Club and Red Willow Ladies Extension Club. She enjoyed her flowers, music, entertaining and playing the organ at church for over 60 years. She especially loved her children and grandchildren. June left a legacy of her love for the Lord.

Preceding her in death were her parents, Rue and Jenny Hauxwell; three sisters, Hazelle, Phyllis and Violet; and three brothers, Jay, Lawrence and Clifford Hauxwell.

Survivors include her husband, Fred Mustion of Culbertson; her children, Linda Searcey and husband, Mike, of McCook, Jerry Mustion and wife, Kris, of Culbertson; seven grandchildren, Mark and wife, Sara; Lee and wife, Jenny; Nathaniel and wife, Amanda; Lynn; Angela Barber and husband, David; Jordan and Maleesha; and six great-grandchildren, Aaron, Eric, Courtney, Caleb, Matthew, Ruth, and one due in February.

Memorials may be given in her name.

Visitation will be Tuesday 9:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. and Wednesday from 9:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m.

Funeral services will be Thursday, September 28, 2006, 10:00 a.m. at the Bethel Missionary Church in Culbertson with Rev. Richard Karr officiating. Burial will be in the Culbertson cemetery.

Kellie Denise (Malleck) Mullen

Kellie Denise Mullen of McCook died Thursday, June 1, 2006 at Community Hospital after a courageous battle with cancer. She was 42 years old.

Kellie was born on July 20, 1963, in McCook, to Robert Paul and Marilyn Louise (Brown) Malleck. She graduated from McCook High School in 1982 and McCook Community College in 1984.

On October 15, 1983 she married James D. Mullen in McCook. To this union three children were born. She was a homemaker and she and Jim owned and operated the Maywood Market from 1996 to 2004. They moved to McCook in late 2004.

Kellie was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church and Altar Society. She avidly took part in the cancer walk for four years. She loved spending time with her children and granddaughters.

Preceding her in death were her maternal and paternal grandparents; her father, Robert on January 15, 2006; and one brother, Christopher Malleck.

Survivors include her husband; James Mullen of McCook; two daughters, Jessica Dawn and husband, Casey Meguire, of Trenton and Ashlie Diane and husband, Albano DaCosta, of Kearney; one son, Joshua James Mullen of McCook; her mother, Marilyn Malleck of McCook; one brother, Ray Malleck and wife, Joyce, of Holyoke, CO; two sisters, Joan and husband, Randy Bass, of Culbertson and Cheryl and husband, Deon Leitner, of McCook; two grandchildren, Bailey Dawn Meguire and Mira Margareth DaCosta; numerous family and a host of friends.

In lieu of flowers, memorials were to be given in her name.

Rosary was on Sunday, June 4th, 2006, 7:00 p.m. at Carpenter Breland Funeral Home. Mass of Christian Burial took place Monday, June 5th, 2006, 10:00 a.m. at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church with Father Gary Brethour officiating. Burial in the Calvary cemetery.

Grace Vesper (Spaulding) Mullanix

Grace Vesper Mullanix, of McCook, died Thursday, September 28, 2006, at Hillcrest Nursing Home. She was 102 years old.

Grace was born on May 30, 1904, in Frontier County, Nebraska to Claude M. and Laura M. (Gherring) Spaulding. She graduated from Curtis High School in 1923. She taught in rural Frontier County schools for seven years.

On May 19, 1926, she married Neal Mullanix in North Platte. To this union two sons were born. They made their home on a farm in Frontier County where Grace was a homemaker and helped with the farming operation. He preceded her in death in 1984.

She was a 79 year member of the McCook Memorial United Methodist Church. She enjoyed crocheting, gardening, flowers and spending time with her family.

Preceding her in death were her parents, Claude and Laura Spalding; her husband, Neal Mullanix; one granddaughter, Minnie Ann Mullanix; and two great-grandchildren, Amy and Tommy Lightner.

Survivors include her two sons, Donald Mullanix and wife, Donna, of McCook and Gerald Mullanix and wife, Gladys, of Grand Island; four grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, memorials were to be given in her name to Memorial United Methodist Church Elevator Fund.

Funeral Services were Tuesday, October 3, 2006, at 10:30 a.m. with the Rev. Dr. Jeff Thurman officiating. Burial took place in Memorial Park cemetery.

Delmar E. Moorhous

Delmar E. Moorhous, age 87, died Saturday, July 22, 2006 at Community Hospital in McCook.

Delmar was born on January 20, 1919, at Naponee, NE to Charles Fay and Minnie Margaret (Leimbach) Moorhous. He graduated from Culbertson High School in 1936.

On September 5, 1941, he entered the US Army. He served during World War II in Northern France and Rhineland as auto mechanic. He was honorably discharged on November 25, 1945.

Delmar lived a short time in Denver, CO where he was a janitor for the Denver Schools. He returned to the McCook community where he was employed at TRW, the East Sale Barn and Producer’s Sale Barn until his retirement.

He was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Culbertson and past-commander and lifetime member of the Culbertson VFW Post # 6219. He enjoyed fishing and hunting in his spare time.

Preceding him in death were his parents, Charlie and Minnie Moorhous; two infant siblings, two brothers, Melvin Moorhous and Wayne Moorhous and his wife, Mary; two brothers-in-law, George Olson and Harold Swartz; and one sister-in-law, Carol Ann Moorhous.

Survivors include his two sisters, LaVerne Olson of Englewood, CO and Bethene Swartz of Grand Junction, CO; two brothers, Don Moorhous and wife, Thelma, and Keith Moorhous all of Culbertson; numerous nieces and nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews.

Memorials were to be given in his name.

Funeral service were Wednesday, July 26, 2006, 10:30 a.m. at Carpenter Breland Funeral Chapel with Pastor Brad Rick officiating. Burial took place in the Culbertson cemetery with full military honors.

Carl Frank Miller

Carl Frank Miller, 95 died Friday, June 23, 2006 at Hillcrest Nursing Home, in McCook, NE. Carl was the last surviving sibling of his family.

Carl was born July 10, 1910 in Hitchcock County, NE, in a sod house to Frank & Amelia (Wittwer) Miller. Carl grew up farming with horses on the family farm in Hitchcock County. He bought his first tractor a Farmal F-30 in 1937 and his first car was a 1930 Chevy Coup.

He married his sweetheart Augusta Andrijeski, May18, 1932 at St. Ann’s Catholic Church. They were blessed with 72 years of marriage. To this union eight children were born. Carl and Augusta began their married life on the Miller Family farm north of Culbertson, NE. In 1944 they moved to the Harr Place near St. Ann buying it in 1946. Carl had a farm sale in 1975, continued living on the farm until moving to McCook in June 1984. Augusta passed away September 2004, at which time Carl moved to Hillcrest Nursing Home.

Carl loved the farm, he liked to watch things grow and bring in the harvest. After his farm sale he bought back a small amount of livestock and kept some of the land to raise feed for them. The land brought him close to God and his faith showed it. When times were tough, the crops dried up, crops were hailed out or the calf crop was poor. He never complained, he would say, “God will get us through this”.

Carl was a loving kind generous husband, father and grandfather. He set good examples of honesty, faith, love, how to treat others and how to be fair in all things. He had great love for his family and great respect for friends and neighbors. He showed a genuine respect for the care takers of the nursing home and never complained even as his health declined. He would pray daily for his family and others in need.

Once reflecting back over his life the words of wisdom he wished to pass to the younger generation to help them through life’s difficulties, struggles, uncertainties and disappointments is; “Work hard and be honest”. “Go to Church and keep your faith”. “Be good to everybody, live like the Good Lord wants us to live and you will never be sorry”.

Preceding him in death were; his parents, his wife Augusta, one brother Joe, four sisters, Anna Sonckson, Martha Smith, Ida Andrijeski, Wilhelmina (Minnie) Smith. Two grandsons Lee Anthony Miller, Christopher Weskamp, three great grandchildren John Andrew Buchmeier, Taylor Teel and Avery Kent Lashley.

He is survived by eight children, Richard Miller and wife Retha of Cody, WY, LaVerne Miller and wife Bernadette of Sioux Falls, SD, Kenneth Miller and wife Jeanie of Longmont, CO, Charlene Weskamp and husband Andy of Norton, KS, Carla Teel and husband Dewey of Neligh, Leo Miller and wife of Diane of Lincoln, Melvin Miller and wife Jerry of McCook, and Carol Lashley and husband Randy of Trenton, 31 grandchildren and 72 great grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers memorials were to be given in his name.

Rosary took place Monday, 7:30 p.m. at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church. Mass of Christian Burial was on Tuesday, June 27th at 10:30 a.m. with Father Val Bartek officiating. Burial took place in Calvary cemetery.

Wilma (Handel) Meints

Wilma Meints, 78, of McCook entered into peaceful rest on Saturday, November 11, 2006 at Community Hospital in McCook.

She was born August 1, 1928, four miles north of Wauneta to Raymond and Alta (Lentz) Handel. She attended school in Palisade.

She married Paul Meints June 21, 1947 in Oberlin, Kans. One son was born to this union.

They made their home in Wauneta where she worked in a creamery. And for several years was an interior/exterior house painter and wall paper restorer. They moved to McCook in the late 70’s to take over the E. F. D. Freight Delivery Service. She retired to take care of her brother, Kenneth Handel.

She was a volunteer with the Special Olympics for years. Wilma was also a member of the Southwest Nebraska Antique and Rod Club in which she drove and showed her 1956 Ford. Her door and heart was always open to those in need of a friend.

She was preceded in death by her parents, and her brother Kenneth.

Survivors include her husband, Paul; a son, Pete Meints and wife Geraldine of McCook; one grandson, Chris Meints and wife Dawn of Valparaiso, Indiana; two great-granddaughters, Samantha Marie and Shelby Rae Meints; one sister, Mary Miller and husband Gene of Cambridge; many other friends and relatives.

Funeral services were Tuesday, November 14, 2006 at 10 a.m. at Carpenter Breland Funeral Home in McCook. Burial took place in Riverside cemetery in Wauneta.

Memorials were to be given in her name.

Iva Mae (Tirrill) McNutt

Iva Mae McNutt, of McCook, died Thursday, June 15, 2006 at Hillcrest Nursing Home. She was 98 years old.

Iva was born on August 30, 1907 at Basehor, Kansas to Thomas E. and Ellen (Morash) Tirrill. She alone with her family moved to the McCook community when she was a small child. She attended rural school south of McCook.

On June 8, 1925, she married Charles Sherman McNutt. To this union four children were born. They made their home on a farm near Hayes Center and later moved to a farm near McCook. Iva was a busy homemaker and also worked for Burns Lab for many years. She lived by herself until the age of 95 when she moved to Hillcrest. She enjoyed gardening, both vegetables and flowers, and spending time with her many grandchildren.

Iva was a member of First Baptist Church and the American Baptist Women. She was active in the church choir and Sunday school.

Preceding her in death were her parents, Thomas and Ellen Tirrill; and one sister, Dorothy Lunkwitz.

Survivors include her two sons, Dale McNutt and Larry McNutt both of McCook; two daughters, Lorene and husband, Henry Kordenbrock, of McCook and Ardis and husband, Joe Moreau, of Ephrada, WA; one brother, Lester Tirrill of McCook; two sisters, Elizabeth Edwards and Maudie Oberg both of McCook; 7 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, and 20 great-great-grandchildren.

Memorials were to be given in her name to the First Baptist Church or Hillcrest Nursing Home.

Funeral services were Tuesday, June 20, 2006, 2:00 p.m. at Carpenter Breland Chapel with Rev. Stan Upchurch and Rev. James Denny officiating. Burial took place in Memorial Park cemetery.

June Helen Louise Martens

June Helen Louise Martens died Thursday, November 16, 2006, at Community Hospital in McCook. She had recently turned 91 years old.

June was born on November 10, 1915, in Pender, Nebraska to Henry Herman and Elizabeth Wilhelmina (Rowe) Martens. She graduated from Pender High School.

She made her home in Hardington for 22 years. She then moved to Holdrege and then to North Platte. She finally moved to McCook where she has resided for over the past 26 years. While living in these communities, June was employed by their Elk’s Clubs as a waitress, bartender, cook and janitor. She retired in 1986.

She was a member of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church. She was also a member of the Veteran’s of Foreign Wars Auxiliary and Eagles Auxiliary.

Preceding her in death were her parents, Henry and Elizabeth Martens; two brothers, Helmuth and Allen Martens; and one sister, Rita May.

Survivors include her brother, R.A. “Pete” Martens and wife, Ursula, of Sun Lakes, AZ; one niece, Beth Martens, of Burbank, CA; two nephews, Timothy Martens and Greg Martens both of Oakland; and special friend Ursula Bernard and the late Douglas Bernard.

Memorials were to be given in her name.

Graveside services were Monday, November 20, 2:00 p.m. at Calvary cemetery with committal following.

Loretta Mary (Berger) Leitner

Loretta Mary Leitner died Thursday, October 26, 2006, at Hillcrest Nursing Home in McCook. She was 90 years old.

She was born, September 19, 1916 to Mathias Henry and Emma Mary (Kleidosty) Berger on the family farm northwest of Herndon, Kansas. She graduated from Herndon High School in 1934.

She married Raymond Claude Leitner in Herndon and they made their home on the family farm where she was born. To this union, three children were born, James, Sandi, and Randy. Loretta taught in Rawlins County Country Schools and later worked as a teller at the State Bank of Herndon until retirement.

She was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Christian Mother Altar Society and was a Eucharistic minister and lecturer. She enjoyed attending the Kansas State Fair, gardening, embroidery, knitting, her grandchildren and their many activities.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Mathias and Emma Berger; husband, Raymond Leitner in 1981; great-grandson, Cade Chapman; grandson-in-law, Greg Chapman; one sister, Monica Meyer; one brother, Raymond Berger and wife, Alvina; and brothers-in-law, William Springer and Francis Kompus.

Survivors include her two sons, James Leitner and wife, Kathy, of Littleton, Colo., Randy Leitner and wife, Jacque, of Herndon, Kan; daughter Sandi Baxter and husband, Milton, of McCook; two sisters, Margie Howland and husband, Larry, of Thornton, Colo. and Florence Springer of Greeley, Colo.; seven grandchildren, Shelley Leitner of Omaha, Robb Leitner and wife, Gay, of McCook, Derek Leitner and wife, Piaf, of Seattle, Wash., Lorissa and husband, Rick Williams, of Canyon, Tex., Sheralee Leitner of Dallas, Tex., Cody Leitner and wife, Andi, of Perry, Okla., and Megan Leitner of Dallas, Tex.; and seven great-grandchildren.

Memorials were to be given in her name.

Rosary took place Sunday, October 29, 2006, 7:00 p.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Herndon, Kan. Mass of Christian Burial was Monday, October 30, 2006, 10:00 a.m. at St. Mary’s with Rev. Galen Long as celebrant. Burial in St. Mary’s Catholic cemetery.
