Murl Lavern Lavery

Murl Lavern Lavery died Monday, November 27, 2006 at Hillcrest Nursing Home. He was 85.

Murl was born to Edwin C. and Mary E. “Lizzy” (Bowden) Lavery at home north of Overton on June 5, 1921. He attended District #42. He farmed with his father and brother until he married Bethine Bea Blakeslee on March 26, 1949 in the Methodist church in Lexington by Rev. L.R. Davis. They farmed north of Overton, then in 1962 west of Sumner and in 1976 north of Wauneta. They moved to McCook in 1990. He enjoyed farming, fishing and planting bushes.

He was preceded in death by his mother on January 16, 1930; his father on October 1, 1978; step-mother Myrle on March 1, 1988; granddaughter Ashley Marie Lavery on July 28, 1988; sister Cleda Eileen Lahm on February 28, 1997; brother Nile Wayne Lavery on October 20, 1999; daughter-in-law, Dianne Ruth Imel Lavery on December 24, 2001; sister-in-law, Lucene Lea (Blakeslee) Miller on June 6, 2000 and husband, Gordon Miller on Nov. 23, 2003.

He is survived by wife, Bethine of McCook; two daughters, Lana Lou Ator of Colorado Springs, Colo. and Shirley Ann Johnson of McCook; two sons, Lloyd Lee Lavery and companion, Rose Lockhorn, of McCook and Blake Allen Lavery and wife, Pat, of Holdredge; sister, Reta Johnson and husband, Larry, of Lincoln; nine grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; three step-great-grandchildren; and many relatives and friends.

Memorials were to be given in his name.

Funeral services were Friday, December 1, 2006, at 1:30 p.m. at Carpenter Breland Funeral Home with Jerry Beckenhauer officiating. Burial took place at Memorial Park cemetery.

Linda Diane (Nitz) Larson

Linda Diane Larson, of McCook, died Tuesday, June 13, 2006 at the Madonna Rehabilitation Hospital in Lincoln. She was 60 years old.

Linda was born on July 4, 1945, to Frank Gustav and Mildred Clare (Klucke) Nitz in Ledyard, Iowa. She graduated from Ledyard High School in 1963 and attended Mankato State College in Minnesota.

On November 11, 1968, she married Ronald C. Larson in Lakota, Iowa. To this union two children were born. They lived in Omaha and Crescent, Iowa, before making their home in McCook to be near their grandchildren. Linda was employed as a medical transcriptionist for Creighton Medical Center in Omaha. She enjoyed baking and spending time with her grandchildren.

Linda was a member of Peace Lutheran Church.

Preceding her in death were her parents, Frank and Mildred Nitz; and two brothers, Virgil and Roger Nitz.

Survivors include her husband of 38 years, Ronald Larson of McCook; one son, James Larson of Council Bluffs, Iowa; one daughter, Ronda and husband, Jon Graff, of McCook; one brother, Frank Nitz and wife, Peggy, of Olathe, KS; one sister-in-law, Sharon Nitz of Lockhart, TX; and six grandchildren, Anna, Alex, Andrew, Erik, Ethan and Mitchell.

Memorials were to be given in her name.

Memorial services were Friday, June 16, 2006, 1:00 p.m. at Peace Lutheran Church with Pastor Randy Wahl officiating.

Norman Rodney Ladd

Norman “Rod” Rodney Ladd of Oberlin, died in McCook Sunday (September 3, 2006). He was 59 years old.

He was born July 14, 1947 in Omaha to Norman Russell and Ethel Lois (Leonard) Ladd. He grew up in Omaha and attended Benson High School. He later received his GED. He was a truck driver, mechanic and welder.

He served in the U.S. Air Force from 1966-1970 in Vietnam. He enjoyed his family and grandchildren, horses, guns, fishing, reading the Bible and history books.

He was preceded in death by his father.

Survivors include: his children, Matthew and wife Crystal Ladd of McCook, Kelly Ladd of Valley and Carrie Ladd of Logan, IA; and three grandchildren; his mother Lois Ladd of Waterloo; five brothers, Wayne Ladd and wife Gert of Stephens City, VA, Don Ladd and wife Rita of Mechanicsville, MD, Dennis Ladd and wife Pat of Mooresville, NC, Steve Ladd of Greenleafton, MN, Mike Ladd and wife Jackie of Nickerson; five sisters, Sharyn Duncan and husband Ron of Baltimore, MD, Candace Janka and wife David Janka of South Milwaukee, WI, Pat Weeks and husband Gary of Waterloo, Kathy Taylor of Blair, and Debbie Johnson and husband Brian of Grand Meadow, MN.

Memorials were to be given in his name.

Graveside services were Friday at 2 p.m. south of Danbury at the Sherman cemetery in Decatur County, KS.

Harold Gene Karr

Harold Gene Karr, of Indianola, died Monday, November 20, 2006, at Community Hospital. He was 59 years old.

Harold was born on February 18, 1947, to David Randolph and Dorothy Aline (McCollum) Karr in Texarkana, Arkansas. He graduated from High School and attended college for some time.

On April 7, 1965, he entered the US Army and served during the Vietnam War, Desert Storm, and Desert Shield. He was honorably discharged on February 14, 1992.

He married Loretta Black in 1968.

On September 21, 1989 he married Duana Yvonne Thomas at Phoenix, AZ. They made their home in Indianola. Harold was a musician playing in various bands throughout his lifetime. He enjoyed rock, country, bluegrass, and singing karaoke.

Harold was a member of the Indianola American Legion.

Preceding him in death were his parents; one son, Jaime LeRoy Thomas; his brother, David Earl; his grandparents, several aunts, uncles and relatives.

Survivors include his wife, Duana Karr of Indianola; two sons, Harold Karr, Jr. and wife, Kelly, of Colona, Il and David Thomas of Lawton, OK; three daughters, Kristine and husband, Bruce Lilly, of Ft. Polk, LA, Michele and husband, Raymond Hicks, of Savanna, OK, and Cindy and husband, Charlie Berry, of Banger, PA; mother-in-law, Donny Rowe of Cambridge; sister, Sharon and husband, Jerry Sutherland, of Sherman, TX; step-sister, Judy and husband, Richard Cornwell, of Phoenix, AZ; brother-in-law, Dennis Rowe of McCook; and grandchildren, Paul and Gary Dunscomb, Karri Hanson and Charlie Berry, Brittney, Kayla, Elizabeth, Fortin Reda and Harold Karr, III, Duana, Jamie, Ray and Jared Hicks, Leslie, Codie and Brooke Thomas and Julian Wienert.

Memorials were given in his name.

Funeral services were Friday, November 24, 10:30 a.m. at Carpenter Breland Chapel with Mike Brown assisting. Inurnment will be at a later time.

Elsie (Reiners) Karp

Elsie “Mae” Karp, age 91, died Sunday, August 27, 2006 at McCook Community Hospital.

She was born April 29, 1915 to John and Emma (Crocker) Reiners at Indianola. She graduated from Red Willow High School in 1932 and Beauty School in 1939.

She married Charles Karp on March 4, 1946 in Indianola. To this union two daughters were born, Betty and Annette. She was owner/operator of three beauty shops in Indianola over a span of 40 years. She wrote articles for the Catholic Register and also wrote a weekly column for the Indianola News. In Recent years, she became known for her creation of the Memory Tree at McCook Community Hospital. She was also the recipient for Outstanding Donor and Fundraiser Appreciation Award from Community Hospital.

Mae was a member of St. Catherine’s Catholic Church and Altar Society, the American Legion Auxiliary, the VFW Auxiliary, and the U Go I Go Pinochle Club.

She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Emma Reiners; husband, Charles; three sisters, Grace Stritt, Alice C. Reiners, Stella Pratt; and two brothers, Franklin and Eugene Reiners.

Survivors include her daughters, Betty Lynn and husband, Doug of Lexington and Annette Bauer and husband, Jerry of McCook; sisters, Nellie McConville and husband, Leo of McCook, Sister Madeline Reiners of St. Louis, Missouri and Luella McConville and husband, Dick of McCook; brother, Glenn Reiners and wife, Catherine of McCook; six grandchildren, Tony Bauer and wife, Darcy and children, Noah and Olivia, Valerie Loop and husband, Jason and children, Riley and Haiden, Amber Murphy and husband, Cory and children, Conner, Delaney, and Owen, Travis Giesbrecht and wife, Kathy and children, Bowen and Barrett, Tricia Jöstlein and husband Thomas, Tyler Giesbrecht; and one step-granddaughter, Emma Lynn.

In lieu of flowers memorials were given in her name to House Ear Institute or St. Catherine’s Catholic Church.

Rosary was held Wednesday, August 30, 2006, at 7:00 p.m. at Carpenter Breland Funeral Home in McCook.

Mass of Christian Burial was Thursday, August 31, 2006, at St. Catherine’s Catholic Church at 11:00 a.m. in Indianola with Father Paul Witt as Celebrant. Burial took place in St. Catherine’s cemetery in Indianola.

Donald LaVerne Jumps

Donald LaVerne Jumps of Culbertson died Saturday, December 16, 2006 at his home. He was 70 years old.

Don was born on March 23, 1936, in Hayes County, Nebraska to Benjamin Harrison and Freda (Behrendsen) Jumps. He graduated from Culbertson High School in 1954.

On September 13, 1958, he married Mary C. Stromp. To this union two daughters were born. They made their home in Culbertson where Don worked for the USDA Soil Conservation Service as a field technician. He retired in 1994.

His most enjoyment came from spending time with his children and grandchildren and following their activities. He enjoyed auctioneering and spending time on the farm. He loved all sports, especially watching Bison football. He spent many hours visiting with friends at the K-Store in Culbertson.

Preceding him in death were his parents; his sister, Arlene Chambers; and two brothers, James “Jack” and Robert Jumps.

Survivors include his wife, Mary of Culbertson; daughters, Katherine Jo and husband, Steve Hanchera, of Swisher, Iowa and Kristyl Ann and husband, Scott Hanchera, of Danbury; three brothers, Glenn Jumps and wife, Noreen, of McCook, Darwin Jumps and companion, Mary, of McCook and Benjamin “Ben” and wife, Cheryl, of Bailey, CO; sister, Betty Felker of McCook; sisters-in-law, Janeice Jumps of Culbertson and Jean Bittner of Albion; and four grandchildren, Marissa and Andrea Hanchera and Lindsay and husband, Lee McConville, and Alex Hanchera; many nieces, nephews and a host of friends.

Memorials were to be given in his name to the Kearney Cancer Center.

Funeral services were Tuesday, December 19, 2006, 11:00 a.m. at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Culbertson with Pastor Bradley Rick officiating. Burial took place in the Culbertson cemetery.

Betty Ann (Robinson) Jordan

Betty Ann Jordan left us Friday (August 11, 2006) at Community Hospital in McCook. She was 57 years old.

She was born in Monroe, WI on August 7, 1949 to Edward Leslie and Myrtle Leona (Olson) Robinson. She grew up in Fort Collins and graduated from Fort Collins High School in Fort Collins, CO in 1967.

Betty married Charles W. Jordan February 18, 1972 at Fort Collins. They have lived in McCook since 1987. To this union three children were born.

She enjoyed gardening and family especially her grandchildren.

Preceding her in death were her mother and her grandparents, Harry & Flossie Robinson and Albert & Ella Olson.

Survivors include: her husband, Charles of McCook; her children, Charles E. Jordan, Shawna Roth and friend Kevin and Crystl Chauncy and husband Curtis all of McCook; her father, Ed Robinson of Haigler; three brothers, Gene Robinson and wife Marilyn of Stockton, IL, Jerry Robinson and friend Amy of Cheyenne, WY and Shorty Robinson and wife Rachael of Marathon, TX; two sisters, Diane Robinson of McCook and Lonna Clegg and husband Steve of Haigler; four grand-children, Emmerie & Landyn Roth and Jordan and Jorlynn Chauncy; numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews.

Memorials were accepted in her name.

Funeral services were Monday 4 p.m. at Carpenter Breland Funeral Chapel with Allen Wilkersen officiating.

Pauline (Rehn) Jones

Trenton - Pauline Jones, 96, died Friday (August 4, 2006) at El Dorado Manor in Trenton.

She was born February 22, 1910 at Culbertson to Frederick and Marie K. (Jugert) Rehn. She grew up and attended school in Culbertson and married Lewis D. Jones in Culbertson on March 23, 1933. They lived nine and a half miles southeast of Trenton until retiring and moving into Trenton.

She was a member of the Trenton United Methodist Church for 80 years. She belonged to the Helping Hand Club, Kum Again Club, and the Pioneer Campers. Her favorite pastimes were spent crocheting, gardening and tending to her special plants and flowers.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, “Casey” in May of 1995; a daughter, Shirley Ann at the age of two; two brothers, one in infancy and Carl Rehn; a sister, Marie Willmann; one grandson, Kelly; and a son-in-law, James Huser.

Survivors include: two sons, Robert L. Jones and wife Martha of Cheyenne, WY and Thomas F. Jones of Sulphur, LA; two daughters, Bonnie L. Owens of Sergeant Bluff, IA and Janice M. Huser of Wauneta; eight grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren, many nieces and nephews.

Memorials were to be given to the Trenton Ambulance Fund.

Funeral services were Tuesday at 10 a.m. at Carpenter Breland Funeral Home in McCook with Rev. Judy Dye officiating. Burial took place in the Culbertson cemetery.

Kathryn K. (Kieffe (Atchison) ) Jessen

Kathryn Jessen departed from this life on Monday, September 18, 2006. She was 86 years old.

Kathryn was born on August 20, 1920 to William C. and Josephine Gammon Kieffe at Crawford, Nebraska.

Kathryn graudated from Chardon High School in May 1938 and briefly attended nursing school in Alliance.

While living in Idaho in the mid to late 50’s she pursued her career in nursing, graduating in the spring of 1958. Through her life Kathryn worked as a nurse in several different hospitals and nursing homes. In October 30, 1971 she married Hans “Toby” Jessen. They retired to Palisade, Nebraska in 1984. She was a loving, caring mother and grandmother. She enjoyed cooking, baking, embroidering and reading.

Preceeding her in death were her parents; her husband; one daughter, Mary Jo Atchison, three sisters, Gwendolyn Kieffe, Genevieve Kieffe, and Josephine (Kieffe) Peterson and two brothers, Richard “Dick” Kieffe and Lewis W. “Billy” Kieffe.

Survivors include one daughter, Rhonda and husband, George Bamsey, of Omaha, two sons, William “Bill” Atchison and wife, Jeri, of Palisade and Jim Atchison of Chadron, eight grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be given in her name to the Alzheimers Association.

Graveside service were Friday, September 22, 2006, 11:00 a.m., M.S.T. at the Greenwood cemetery in Chadron. Burial was in the Greenwood cemetery.
