Edna Mildred (Fritz) Schaffert

Edna Mildred Schaffert of Atwood, Kansas, originally of Bartley, died Monday, May 15, 2006 at the Rawlins County Health Center in Atwood. She was 83 years old.

Edna was born on July 9, 1922, in Red Willow County, near Bartley, to John Frederick and Annie Augusta (Weiss) Fritz. She graduated from Cambridge High School in 1942.

On May 31, 1943, she married Melvin Dale Schaffert at the Bartley Trinity Lutheran Church. To this union two children were born. They made their home on a farm south of Bartley. Together they farmed until Melvin’s death on February 2, 1998. Edna moved to Atwood in January of 1999 to be near her daughter.

She was a member of Peace Lutheran Church and Lutheran Women’s Missionary League, Bartley American Legion Auxiliary, Bartley VFW Auxiliary and Trenton VFW Auxiliary. She enjoyed spending time with her family, being outside, and she was a lover of all animals.

Preceding her in death were her parents, John and Annie Fritz; her husband, Melvin Schaffert; one brother, Walter Fritz; three half-brothers, John, Max and Carl Fritz; one half-sister, Freda (Fritz) Barth; and two grandchildren, Melvin and Marlene Memmelaar.

Survivors include her two children, Paul Schaffert and wife, Pat, of Indianola and Karen and husband, Lucas Memmelaar, of Atwood; one brother-in-law, Ervin Schaffert and wife, Lillian, of Indianola; six grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren, Courtney Schaffert, Kris Schaffert and wife, Dora, and their son Aden, Alyssa and husband, Ramiro Trevino and their children, Xzander and Xzekiel, Caitlin Schaffert, Bonnie and her husband, Randy Carlock, and their children Monique and Elizabeth and Joshua Memmelaar; numerous nieces and nephews and a host of friends.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the Trinity Lutheran cemetery Directory Fund.

Visitation will be Wednesday from 9:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. and Thursday from 9:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home.

A memorial service will be held on Friday, May 19, 1:30 p.m. at Peace Lutheran Church with Pastor Randy Wahl and Pastor Don White officiating. The burial will be held at Trinity Lutheran cemetery south of Bartley at 10:00 a.m.

Dora Mae (Chitwood (Ihrig) ) Tines

Dora Mae (Ihrig) Tines died Friday, June 30th, 2006 at the Brentwood Estates in Lincoln. She was 73 years old.

Dora was born on August 23, 1932, in Norton, Kansas to Verl and Faye I. (Willey) Chitwood.

She was married to Robert Carl Ihrig. To this union four children were born. They made their home in several locations where Robert was a teacher and coach and Dora was a homemaker and busy mother. He preceded her in death. She later married Harold Tines in Trenton. He died shortly after their marriage.

Dora was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church while she lived in McCook. In 1981, she moved to Lincoln and in 2001 moved to the Brentwood Estates where she was living at the time of her death. She loved to play cards, cook and spend time with her family and friends.

Preceding her in death were her parents, Verl and Faye Chitwood; her husbands, Robert Ihrig and Harold Tines; and one brother, Jesse Chitwood.

Survivors include her two sons, Bob Ihrig and wife, Susan, of Centennial, CO and Roger Ihrig of Lincoln; two daughters, Pam and husband, Gary Winn, of Portland, OR and Kim and husband, Donald Vokal, of Omaha; one brother, Jim Chitwood and wife, Karon, of Surprise, AZ; 13 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be given to the Valley Hope Alcohol and Drug Treatment Center in Norton, Kansas.

Funeral services were Monday, July 3, 2006, 2:00 p.m. at Carpenter Breland Chapel with Father Gary Brethour officiating. Burial took place in Calvary cemetery.

Darryl Lee Tucker

Darryl Lee Tucker, of McCook, died Saturday, November 18, 2006. He was 76 years old.

Darryl was born on December 17, 1929, in a sod house northwest of Hayes Center to R. T. and Zella Hortense (Ballard) Tucker. He attended Hayes Center Schools. On June 21, 1951, he entered the US Army and served with the 213th Field Artillery, C Battery in Korea during the Korean Conflict. He was honorably discharged on June 20, 1959.

On April 11, 1951, he married Frances Louise McNutt at Imperial. To this union four children were born. Darryl worked for the city of McCook, he was a janitor for the McCook schools, and was a pumper in the oil fields for KTK until his retirement.

Darryl’s favorite pastime was spent collecting farm antiques and restoring them, especially old John Deere tractors and cars. He spent hours going through magazines collecting pictures and compiling albums of old-time memorabilia having some 25 albums.

He was a member of McCook American Legion and Southwest Nebraska Antique Car Club.

Preceding him in death were his parents, R.T. and Zella Tucker; two sisters, Helen Cotton and Mildred Beck; one brother, Delbert Tucker; one grandson, Trent Davis; and nephew, Kenneth Ray Tucker.

Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Louise Tucker of McCook; two daughters, Deb and husband, Doug Lau, of Culbertson and Dari and husband, Jim Olson, of McCook; two sons, Raymond Tucker and wife, Pam, of Stillwater, PA and Kevin Tucker and wife, Melissa, of McCook; three sisters, Wilma Witman of Greeley, CO, Thelma and husband, Richard Walter, of McCook and Lena and husband, Harold Mihm, of Palisade; ten grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; many relatives and a host of friends.

Memorials may be given in his name.

Visitation will be Tuesday until 8:00 p.m.

Funeral services will be Wednesday, November 22, 2006, 10:30 a.m. at Carpenter Breland Chapel with Jerry Beckenhauer officiating. Burial will be in Riverview cemetery.

Genevieve Greta (Ike) Wagner

Genevieve Greta Wagner of McCook died Saturday, December 16, 2006 at Hillcrest Nursing Home. She was 92 years old.

Gen was born on July 24, 1914 in Red Willow County, Nebraska to Cecil Louis and Sarah Almeda (Myers) Ike. She graduated from McCook High School in 1931.

On June 7, 1937, she married L. Jake Wagner in Oberlin, Kansas. To this union one daughter, Mary Jo was born. They made their home in McCook where Gen was owner and operator of Gen’s Shop, a woman’s clothing store. She retired in 1987.

Preceding her in death were her parents, Cecil and Sarah Ike; her husband, L. Jake Wagner on August 28, 1989; grandson, James LeRoy Baumfalk on August 3, 1983; two brothers, Louis Ike (1974) and Jim Ike (1995); three sisters, Leona “Lee” Imel (1992), Betty Day (1984) and Esther Aman (1996).

Survivors include her daughter, Mary Jo Baumfalk of McCook; grandson, Michael Baumfalk of McCook; one sister, Louise and husband, Jerry Krutsinger, of Alliance; her #2 daughter, Cathie (Gochis) Gibson and her family of Elizabethton, TN; and many nieces and nephews.

Memorials may be given in her name.

A funeral services was held on Thursday, December 21, 2006, 10:30 a.m. at St. Alban’s Episcopal Church with The Rev. Sam Williams officiating. Burial was in Memorial Park cemetery.

Effie Laura (Evans) Walker

Effie “Laura” Walker died Tuesday, August 29, 2006 at Sunset Haven Nursing Home in Curtis. She was 93 years old.

Laura was born on December 24, 1912 in Hayes County, Nebraska to Marvin LeRoy and Effie Mae (Phelps) Evans. She graduated from UNSA High School at Curtis in 1931. On August 16, 1936 she married Lawrence William Walker at the family farm. To this union, three children were born, Charles, Cletis and Marjory.

Laura was a busy homemaker as well as helping out on the farm. Laura served a 4-H Leader for over 50 years. She was a member of the Evergreen Union Church, Missionary Society and taught Sunday school. Other memberships included Harmony Club and Mary Jane Extension Club. She was a quilter, enjoyed cooking, and most of all spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren

Preceding her in death were her parents, Marvin and Rose Evans; her husband, Lawrence; one brother, Andrew; four sisters, Helen, Evelyn, Mamie, and Maudie; and one great-granddaughter, Kayla Marie Walker.

Survivors include her sons, Charles Walker and wife, Sara Mae and Cletis Walker all of McCook; daughter, Marjory L. and husband, Raymond Floyd, of Cheyenne, WY; one brother, John Warren Evans and wife, Jenica, of Sacramento, CA; sister-in-law, Velma Walker of Maywood; nine grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be given in her name.

Visitation will be Thursday until 5:00 p.m. and Friday from 9:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m.

Funeral services will be Saturday, September 2, 2006, 10:00 a.m. at Carpenter Breland Chapel with Jerry Beckenhauer officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park cemetery.

Loretta June (Leiter) Wallace

Loretta June (Leiter) Wallace, died June 13, 2006, at McCook Community Hospital. She was 70 years old.

She was born to Arthur Lee and Gladys (Thomas) Leiter on May 18, 1936 in Scottsbluff.

On September 30, 1989 Loretta Harris and John Wallace were married in Stapleton.

In her younger years she worked as a waitress, hospice work and Harmon’s toothpick factory. Before becoming ill with cancer, she enjoyed bingo, yahtzee, and cards. She also enjoyed reading the Bible and spending time with her two dogs Sam and Luvs.

John and Loretta were both baptized in June of 2004 at Gandy Berean Church.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Arthur and Gladys Leiter; step-dad, Chuck Cotton; two brothers, Donald and Robert Leiter; two sisters Betty Allen and Pauline Wallace.

Survivors include her husband, John Wallace of McCook; two step-sons, Darren Wallace and Johnny Wallace and wife, Deb, all of McCook; one brother, Lee Leiter and wife, Mamie, of New Orleans, LA; brother-in-law, Wilbur Allen of Stapleton; one granddaughter, Jessica Wallace of Dodge City, KS; seven step-grandchildren, six step-great-grandchildren, numerous nieces, nephews, relatives and a host of friends.

Memorials can be given in her name.

Funeral services will be Saturday, June 17, 2006, 10:00 a.m. at Carpenter Breland Funeral Chapel with Frank Scott officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park cemetery.

Visitation will be today until 5:00 p.m. and Friday from 9:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m.

Floyd "Peewee" L. Watson

Floyd L. “Peewee” Watson died Wednesday, June 28, 2006 at Community Hospital in McCook. He was 90 years old.

Peewee was born on June 15, 1916, at Hamlet, to Lewis Thomas and Clara Marie (Uhren) Watson.

He married Della E. Rowland. She preceded him in death on January 16, 1978.

On August 28, 1942, he joined the US Army. He served in the Pacific Theater as a Supply Technician during World War II. He was honorably discharged on February 16, 1946 receiving the American Service Medal, Asiatic Pacific Service Medal, World War II Victory Medal and Good Conduct Medal.

He returned to the McCook community where he was a heavy equipment operator, mechanic, and truck driver for the US Highway Department. He was a member of the Veteran’s of Foreign War and the McCook Eagle’s Club. He enjoyed fishing and big band dancing.

Preceding him in death were his parents, Lewis and Clara Watson; his wife, Della; two brothers, Lloyd and Harold Watson; one sister, Christina Watson; and one niece, Regina Watson.

Survivors include his nieces and nephews, Richard and Karen Watson and Donald and Claudia Watson of Lakewood, CO, LaVina and Larry Hawkins of Denver, CO, John and Barbara Watson of Northglenn, CO, Mary and Bob Wells of Broomfield, CO and Elaine Henry of Casper, WY.

Memorials may be given in his name to the McCook Eagle’s Club, McCook VFW, or Hillcrest Nursing Home.

Visitation will be today until 5:00 p.m., Saturday from 9:00 a.m. until noon, and Sunday from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Friends may send condolences to www.carpenterbreland.com

Funeral services will be Monday, July 3, 2006, 11:00 a.m. at Carpenter Breland Chapel with Pastor John A. Albrecht officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park cemetery with military honor guard.

Robert Dean Wilcox, Sr.

Robert Dean Wilcox, Sr. died Thursday, August 24, 2006 at Hillcrest Nursing Home. He was 76 years old.

Robert was born July 24, 1930, at McCook, to Roy and Mildred (Adams) Wilcox. He graduated from McCook High School in 1948. Robert served in the National Guard from 1948 until 1954.

He married Phyllis Eileen Wagner on June 26, 1949 at Memorial United Methodist Church in McCook. To this union, five children were born, Robert Jr., Gary, Richard, Nancy and Kimberly. Robert was owner/operator of Wilcox Well Drilling. He also farmed and raised cattle. He was a lifetime resident of the McCook community.

He was a member of Memorial United Methodist Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Roy and Mildred; infant brother.

Survivors include his wife, Phyllis of McCook; sons, Robert Wilcox, Jr. and wife, Cindy of McCook, Gary Wilcox and wife Marina of Montgomery, Texas, Richard Wilcox and wife Lisa of McCook; daughters, Nancy Stritt and Husband John of Kearney, Kimberly Carpenter and husband Michael of Hiawatha, Kansas; brother, Dale Wilcox and wife Phyllis of Aurora, Colorado; sisters, Dian Parsons of McCook, Dona Hughes of Hays, Kansas; 14 grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Memorials can be given in his name to the Alzheimer’s Association or to the NE Chapter of Parkinson Disease Association.

Funeral services will be Monday, August 28, 2006 at 11:00 a.m. at Memorial United Methodist Church with the Rev. Dr. Jeff Thurman officiating. Burial will be at Memorial Park cemetery.

Visitation will be Saturday from 9:00 a.m. until noon and Sunday from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home. The family will be greeting friends from 4:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m.
