John D. Winston

John D. Winston died at his home in McCook, (Saturday) July 29, 2006 at the age of 84.

He was born, May 23, 1922 at Middletown, Ohio to Walter and Ruth A. (Saunders) Winston.

He graduated from Withrow High School in Cincinnati, Ohio and attended a trade school in Ohio where he became a drafting engineer. John served in the Army Air Force during WWII from 1942 to 1946 and was stationed in the Marianas Islands in the Philippines.

Following the war he worked for the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation in McCook for more than 30 years. He met his future wife, Phyllis A. Loper while he was stationed in Red Willow County. They were married January 24, 1946 and lived the rest of their lives in McCook. To this union four daughters were born.

He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Cincinnati, OH., Bernard Elbert VFW Post # 1652, the McCook Elks Lodge #1434 where he was a past Exalted Ruler, Chris Hansen American Legion Post # 203, the Eagles Club, McCook Lodge 135 A. F. & A. M. where he received his 50 year membership pin in 1998 and all the York Rite Bodies at McCook, Tehama Temple Mystic Nobles of the Shrine at Hastings. He loved his family, bowling, golf, card games of all kinds, fishing and hunting.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Phyllis (June 5, 2000); a brother Walter R. Winston and a grand-daughter, Rebecca Osborn.

Survivors include his four daughters, Jacqueline Ann Osborn and husband Martin of Circle Pines, MN, Susan Dee Martin and husband Keith of Wichita, KS, Peggy Jane Bacca and husband David of Hastings, MN and Lisa Michele Felker and husband Burt of McCook; a sister Ruth Ann Clark and husband Raymond of Cincinnati, OH; six grandchildren, Cassandra Champion and husband Glenn, Kelly Osborn, Andrew Martin and wife Collette, Samuel Martin, Megan Bacca and Benjamen Bacca: and one great grandchild, Stuart Champion.

Memorials may be given to the McCook Humane Society, Community Care Hospice Services, American Heart Association, or the American Diabetic Association.

There will be a double inurnment for John and Phyllis in Memorial Park cemetery.

Memorial services will be Saturday, August 12, 2:00 p.m. at Carpenter Breland Funeral Home.

Maxine C. (Cheever) Depperschmidt

Maxine C. Depperschmidt of McCook died Friday, October 5, 2007 at Community Hospital in McCook. She was 85 years old.

On April 28, 1922 she was born in Gothenburg to William and Hazel (Rossfiled) Cheever.

She was cremated and graveside inurnment services will be announced at a later date.

Robert Fred Dame

Robert Fred Dame of McCook died Saturday, October 13, 2007 at Hillcrest Nursing Home in McCook. He was 75 years old.

Bob was born June 23, 1932 in Stratton to Fred A. and Ella B. (Parsons) Dame. He attended school through the fourth grade west of Stratton in a country school close to a farm where he and his parents lived at the time. In 1940 the family moved to Stratton where he graduated from Stratton High School in 1950.

He married Veronika “Verna” L. Sis at St. John’s Catholic Church, rural Atwood, Kansas on June 9, 1953. To this union three sons were born, David, Doug and Roger.

He worked at the CU Libenberger & Co. Lumber Yard and the Fryer Service Station while in Stratton. He worked for the Standard Oil Company in Cambridge in 1954-55.
After moving to McCook in 1957 Bob worked at the Casford Service Station, Stevens 7-Up and the Firestone Store. Bob then worked for Tek Tire Company for 16 years until 1984. Then he worked for Western Tire Company until 1986, when he retired due to Rheumatoid Arthritis. He spent his time working in the garage, gardening, fishing and babysitting for his grandchildren.

Robert was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church and the McCook Elks Club.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one grandson, Jeremy Dame; his parents-in-law, Charles & Eleanora Sis; two step-brothers, Scott Carlyle and wife Blanche and George Carlyle.

Survivors include: his wife Verna of McCook; three sons, David and wife Cindy, Doug and wife Brenda and Roger and wife Linda Dame all of McCook; eight grandchildren, Chelsey and husband Cody Feeken, Derek Dame, Cody Dame and wife Amanda, Lindsey Dame, Branigan Baumann, Brady Dame, Bryce Dame and Brendon Dame; two great-grandchildren, Brett Fraker and Natalie Dame; a sister-in-law, Gerry Carlyle of Sun City, Arizona; relatives and friends.

Mass of Christian Burial took place Wednesday, October 17, 2007 at St. Patrick's Catholic Church with Father Gary Brethour officiating. Rosary took place Tuesday, October 16th at 7:00 p.m. at Carpenter Breland Chapel in McCook. Burial in Memorial Park cemetery.

Memorials were to be given in his name.

Barbara Arville (Burwell) Daffer

Barbara Arvilla Daffer, 85 of Wilber died Thursday, November 1, 2007 at St. Elizabeth Hospital in Lincoln.

She was born May 6, 1922 in Ponca City, OK to Robert and Ruth (Mills) Burwell. She attended school in Denver and was a navy wife to Clarke Burgess and were on their honeymoon when Pearl Harbor was attacked. Barbara had lived in Wilber the last four years. She loved her family, helping children, cooking, sewing, flowers especially lilacs and gardening.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a daughter, Sandra Anderson, and brothers and sisters, Earl Burwell, Leonard Burwell, Pearl (Burwell) Hart and Billy Burwell.

Survivors include two sons, Curt Burgess and wife, Cathy, of Riverside, CA and Ronald Burgess and wife, Elizabeth, of San Francisco, CA; brother and sisters: Clifton Burwell and wife, Ginette, of North Ridge, CA, Delores Bailey Burwell of Ellisville, MO and Darlene Lostis and husband, Bill of Joplin, MO; son-in-law, Lonnie Anderson and wife, Peg, of McCook; seven grandchildren, Tara Dunn of Lincoln, Nicole Geisinger and husband, Paul, of Oklahoma City, OK, Christine Matheny and husband, Paul, of Junction City, KS, Branwen Burgess and Megan Burgess both of San Francisco, CA, Joseph Fricke of San Jose, CA and Jacob Burgess of Los Angeles, CA; one great-granddaughter, Savanah Dunn and one great-grandson, Randy Matheny.

Memorials were to be given in her name.

Funeral services were Thursday November 8th at 11 a.m. at the Memorial United Methodist Church in McCook with Rev. Dr. Jeff Thurman officiating. Burial took place in Calvary cemetery.

Agnes Luealla (Sprinkle) Dack

Agnes Luealla Dack, age 72, died Sunday May 6, 2007 at Hillcrest Nursing Home.

She was born August 12, 1934 at Naper, Nebraska to Benjamin J. and Ruth (Pond) Sprinkle.

She worked at S.W.A.T.S. She was baptized at Peace Lutheran Church. She enjoyed playing cards and fishing.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Benjamin and Ruth; two sisters, Mary Nelson and Leona Carfield; and a brother Francis Leo Sprinkle.

She is survived by two sons, Joseph Edwin Dack and wife Nancy and Bradley Eugene Dack and friend Jocelyn Carmichael, all of McCook; two daughters, Linda Ann Wilken and husband Gary of Richmond, Missouri and Karen Lashley and husband Ben of McCook; eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren; two sisters, LaVerne “Dorothy” Blume and husband Duane of McCook and Anna Lee Brown and husband Phillip of Indianola; and two brothers, Paul Sprinkle and wife Clara of McCook and Richard Dean Sprinkle and wife Carolyn of Phoenix, Arizona.

Memorials may be given in her name.

Graveside services were Wednesday at Calvary cemetery with Jerry Beckenhauer officiating.

Ruby L. Dack

Ruby L. Dack died Friday June 1, 2007 at Community Hospital in McCook. She was 73 years old.

Ruby was born on December 23, 1933 in McCook to Joseph Edward and Maude Cecil (Tubbs) Dack. She graduated from McCook High School in 1951.

After graduation Ruby began her employment with First National Bank and then moved to McCook National Bank as a cashier. She worked for a total of 40 years before retiring. She was an avid stamp collector and enjoyed being with her numerous nieces and nephews.

Preceding her in death were her parents, Joseph and Maude Dack; and five brothers, Grover, Alvin, Edwin, Joseph and Bradley, Sr.

Survivors include her brother, Dean Dack and wife, Vera, of McCook; sister, Opal Dack of McCook; 12 nieces and nephews; and 24 great-nieces and great-nephews; numerous cousins and a host of friends.

Memorials may be given in her name.

Funeral services were Tuesday, June 5, 11:00 a.m. at Carpenter Breland Chapel with Jerry Beckenhauer officiating. Burial took place in the Indianola cemetery.

Doris M. (Eaton) Crocker

Doris M. Crocker of McCook died Wednesday, December 5, 2007, at Hillcrest Nursing Home. She was 77 years old.

Doris was born on July 11, 1930 at Franklin to John William and Mary Deloris (Iler) Eaton. She graduated from Indianola High School in 1948 and attended McCook College for one year.

On February 16, 1950, she married Robert Louis Crocker in McCook. To this union four children were born. They made their home in the McCook community where Doris was a homemaker as well as a secretary.

She was a member of McCook Christian Church, Merry Mrs. Extension Club, McCook VFW Auxiliary and BN Auxiliary. She was a Red Cross Volunteer and crocheted countless baby bonnets and booties for the St. Elizabeth’s Hospital Auxiliary in Lincoln. She also volunteered as a secretary for the Indianola Alumni Association for years. In her free time Doris loved to read.

Preceding her in death were her parents, John and Mary Deloris Eaton; her husband, Robert Crocker in 1983; one brother, Francis Melvin Eaton; and granddaughter-in-law, Jami Wilcox.

Survivors include her children, Richie Crocker and wife, Jody, Cynthia and husband, Bob Wilcox, Janet and husband, Mike Fidler all of McCook and Danny Crocker and wife, Teresa of Lincoln; one brother, William Eaton of Sparks, NV; one sister, Loneta and husband, Jim Nolan of Minden; nine grandchildren, Ryan, Kyle, Tyler and Ashley Wilcox; Joshua, Joseph and Riley Crocker and Jacob and Nate Crocker; three great-grandchildren, Kailey and Kassidy Wilcox and Ryder Crocker.

Memorials were to be given in her name.

Funeral services were Friday, December 7, 2007, 10:00 a.m. at McCook Christian Church with Pastor Clark Bates and Pastor Dale Heimer officiating. Burial took place in Memorial Park cemetery.

William Martin Conroy

William “Bill” Martin Conroy of McCook died Friday, June 29, 2007 at McCook Community Hospital. He was 80 years old.

Bill was born in McCook to Laurence Phillip and Catherine Mary (Kennedy) Conroy on May 16, 1927. He entered the National Guard in 1948 and served with the 128th Engineering Battalion. He was honorably discharged in 1954.

On June 2, 1953, he married Anita Catherine Sides at the St. Catherine’s Catholic Church in Indianola. To this union six children were born. They made their home on a farm north of Bartley. Bill farmed for 29 years in the Dry Creek neighborhood; he worked at Dayco; he was owner and operator of “Bill Conroy and Sons Machine Shop”; and was a custodian for St. Patrick’s Catholic Church and School for 18 years until his retirement.

Bill was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church and the Knight’s of Columbus. In his free time he loved wood working and spending time with his children and grandchildren.

Preceding him in death were his parents, Laurence and Catherine Conroy; one brother, John Conroy; sister-in-law, Bertilla Conroy; nephew, Tony Conroy; nieces, Camilla Russell and Theresa Walters; and three foster grandchildren Susie and Mike Sprague and Allen Simms.

Survivors include his wife of over 54 years, Anita Conroy of McCook; six children, Geri and husband, Bob Burns, of McCook, Steve Conroy and wife, Sharon, of Indianola, Marty Conroy and wife, Joyce, of McCook, Jim Conroy and wife, Kim, of Papillion, Lisa and husband, Craig Hendricks, of Omaha and Mari Jo and husband, Sean Mulligan, of Lake Havasu City, AZ; one brother, Tom Conroy of McCook; four sisters, Catherine “Trudi” Conroy and Ellen and husband, Loren Griffin, all of McCook, Rosemarie “Toots” Russell of Arvada, CO and Mary Lou and husband, Bob Endres, of Greeley, CO; 11 grandchildren, Chris and Amy Burns, Jessica and Nate Dickes, Becky Burns, Scott Burns, Sean and RaeAnn Conroy, Stephenie Conroy, Caitlyn and Christian Conroy, Andy, William and Katy Conroy; four step-grandchildren, Jessica and Brian Keen, Ashley and David Martins and Megan and Jon Hendricks; three great-grandchildren, Finley Conroy, Emmitt Dickes and Robert Burns; two step-great-grandchildren, Emma Martins and Taelyn Tedrow; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Memorials may be given in his name.

Rosary was Monday, July 2, 2007, at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church with Father Ferdinand Boehme officiating. Mass of Christian Burial was Tuesday, July 3, 2007, 10:00 a.m. at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church with Father Gary Brethour as Celebrant. Burial took place in St. Catherine’s cemetery in Indianola.

Harold L. Clouse

Harold L. Clouse, age 79, died Thursday, February 15, 2007 at McCook Community Hospital.

He was born December 29, 1927 to Gottleib and Sophie (Ogorzolka) Clouse in Bartley, Nebraska.

He married Beaulah “Boots” (Kramer) Bell in 1952.

He was a member of the Eagles post 2769 and a lifetime member of the VFW post 1652.

He was preceded in death by his parents and step-parents; wife, Beaulah (May 9, 1999); brother, John; sister, Helen; great-grandson, Eric; and step daughter-in-law, Carolyn.

He is survived by his step-sons, Warren Bell and Roger Bell, both of Loveland, CO; step-daughters, Karen Smith, and husband James of McCook, Kay Bell of Hudson, CO, Dianne Alexander and husband, Arden of Liberal, KS; sister Lucille Olhsen of Holdrege; special aunt, Ora Clouse; seven grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; one great-great grandson; and many nieces and nephews.

Memorials may be given in his name to the Heritage Senior Center.

Funeral services were held Monday, February 19, 2007 at Carpenter Breland Funeral Home at 2:00 p.m. with Terry McCorkle officiating. Burial took place in the Bartley cemetery

Hazel F. (Hock) Clonch

Hazel F. Clonch, a 67 year resident of McCook, Nebraska, died Thursday, March 22, 2007 at Great Plains Regional Medical Center in North Platte, Nebraska at the age of 94.

Hazel was born January 3, 1913 in a sod house near Calvert, Kansas, to Arthur Melvin and Bertha Pearl (Spencer) Hock. She attended school in Almena, Kansas, graduating in 1931.

She married Raymond Walter Clonch on July 20, 1933, in Smith Center, Kansas. They resided in Phillipsburg, Kansas, until moving to McCook in 1940.

Hazel was a member of the Memorial United Methodist Church. She enjoyed playing bridge with her friends and traveling, and loved being with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Raymond; her sister, Leona Williams and her niece Lola Williams.

Survivors include: her three children, Dennie Clonch of Sequin Texas; DeLinn (Barbara) Clonch of West Richland, Washington; and Lynda (Tom) Gorman of North Platte; nine grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren.

Memorials are requested to the Community Hospital Health Foundation.

Funeral services were at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, March 27th at Carpenter Breland Funeral Home in McCook with the Rev. Dr. Jeffrey Thurman officiating. Burial was at the Norton cemetery in Norton, Kansas.

Our heartfelt thanks to the doctors, nurses, friends, relatives and neighbors for the beautiful flowers, cards, and kind acts of sympathy upon the death of our mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, Hazel Clonch.
