Doloris Elizabeth (Colling) Clifton

Doloris Elizabeth Clifton of McCook died Tuesday, December 4, 2007 at Hillcrest Nursing Home. She was 83 years old.

Doloris was born on January 27, 1924 at McCook to Louis John and Susan Anna (O’Dea) Colling. She graduated from Red Willow High School in 1941 and St. Francis College of Nursing in Grand Island in 1947.

On August 24, 1948, she married Merle Fulford Clifton. To this union five children were born. They made their home in the McCook community where Doloris was a busy mother and homemaker. She was also a nurse for St. Catherine’s and Community Hospital for 37 years.

Doloris was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church and Altar Society. She was a Cub and Boy Scout Leader and volunteered for the collection of Muscular Dystrophy Association. She was instrumental in organizing disaster drills through the hospital for many years.

Preceding her in death were her parents, Louis and Susan Colling; her husband, Merle Clifton in 2001; three brothers, Bernard, Donald and George Colling; and two sisters, Lucille Hill and Mildred Stratman and one grandchild, Jessica Clifton.

Survivors include her two daughters, Patricia Clifton and Jo (Joyce) and husband, Bert Klein, all of Dallas, Texas; three sons, Roy Clifton and wife, Joan, of Ravenna, Ray Clifton of North Platte, and Garry Clifton and wife, Jennifer, of Park City, Utah; two brothers, Joseph Colling and wife, Bernadine, of LaCrosse, Wisconsin and Harold Colling of Wichita, Kansas; one sister, Marge and husband, Gene Malleck, of McCook; five grandchildren, Emma, Clint and wife, Brienne, Brecken, Joshua, and Jonathan; and one great-grandchild, Sebastian.

Memorials were to be given in her name to St. Patrick’s Catholic Church.

Rosary took place Friday, December 7, 2007, 7:30 p.m. at Carpenter Breland Funeral Home. Mass of Christian Burial was Saturday, December 8, 2007, 10:00 a.m. at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church with Father Gary Brethour officiating. Burial took place in Memorial Park cemetery.

Robert W. Clark

Robert “Bob” W. Clark passed away Friday, October 26, 2007 at Community Hospital in McCook. He was 86 years old.

Bob was born on February 8, 1921 on a farm south of McCook to Fred Milton and Lucy (Nothnagle) Clark.

On October 24, 1943, he married Berniece Heskett at Oberlin, Kan. To this union twin daughters were born. Following Berniece’s death in 1978, he married Josephine Cuellar on March 23, 1980. Bob spent most of his life in the McCook community where he farmed and was also a painter until he retired.

Bob enjoyed fishing, hunting and gardening. He also enjoyed spending time with a special nephew, Mark, on his farm south of McCook and companion Jenny and friend Darlene Cuellar.

Preceding him in death were his parents, Fred and Lucy Clark; his wives, Berniece and Joshephine; and two sisters, Helen Graf and Lola Griffing.

Survivors include his daughters, Karen and husband, Fred Gammel, of Mesa, Ariz. and Korrine and husband, Don Rowland of McCook; two grandsons, four granddaughters, and 11 great-grandchildren; step-daughter, Anne and husband, Jim Dowd, of Indianola; two step-granddaughters and three step-great-grandchildren; one brother, Larry Clark of San Pablo, Calif.; and one sister, Barbara Jean Sprenkle of Dodge City, Kan.

Memorials were to be given in his name.

Funeral services were Tuesday, October 30, 2007, 2:00 p.m. at Carpenter Breland Chapel with Jerry Beckenhauer officiating. Burial took place in Memorial Park cemetery.

Braydyn Lee Chancellor

Braydyn Lee Chancellor infant baby of Eleesha Nasasha Chancellor was born and died on Wednesday, October 31, 2007 at Community Hospital in McCook.

He is survived by his mother Eleesha of McCook; his grandfather, Elgin Chancellor and step-grandmother, Heather Chancellor of McCook; grandmother, Tisha Matias of Kearney; great-grandmothers, Patricia Rivera of Kearney and Lanora Palmateer of Bartley; great-grandfather, Mert Chancellor of McCook; great-great-grandmothers, Rosa Diaz of Kearney and “Doll” Chancellor of McCook; uncle, Brady Chancellor of Curtis; numerous uncles, aunts and family.

Memorials were to be given in his name.

A private family service was held Friday, November 2, 3:00 p.m. at Carpenter Breland Funeral Home with Pastor Allan C. Jackson II officiating. Burial took place in Memorial Park cemetery.

Loretta Marguerite (Joyce) Cappel

Loretta Marguerite (Joyce) Cappel passed away September 11, 2007 at Hillcrest Nursing Home in McCook, Nebraska at the age of 95 years, nine months, and eights days.

She was born December 3, 1911 to Walter and Catherine (Sanders) Joyce in Clay County, Nebraska. She grew up on a farm between Harvard and Sutton, graduating from Harvard High School in 1930. She came to southwest Nebraska along with her twin sister Charlotte to teach school. She taught school in Frontier County, District 25, for three years then in Hitchcock County, south of the Old Stone Church, for two years.

On May 28, 1936 she married Glen Cappel at McCook They farmed west of McCook for many years. They moved into McCook 1960.

Loretta was a 4-H leader for many years. Other interests included refinishing and upholstering furniture and bowling, having belonged to a bowling league for many years. She was an avid gardener and had a special love for her roses. She shared her talents with others, delivering bouquets of flowers to St. Catherines Hospital, the Dominican Sisters Convent and Hillcrest Nursing home plus sharing them with her family and friends. She was a caring neighbor, visiting and taking care of the sick and homebound. Loretta worked outside her home as a nurse’s aide at both Cambridge Hospital and Hillcrest Nursing Home. She was a member of St. Patricks Catholic Church, St. Patricks’ Altar Society, and the BPOE Does.

Preceding her in death were her parents, her husband Glen in 1988, daughter Geraldine Palmer in 2002, son-in-law Larry Palmer in 2006, a great grandson, Justin Kraft, and her 15 siblings: one Blue Baby, nine brothers; Walter, William, Martin, Lawrence, Ambrose (infant), Myran, Marcellus, Vincent and Kenneth: five sisters; Wilhelmina, Eileen, twin Charlotte, Catherine and Mary Magdelan (infant).

Loretta is survived by one daughter, Donna and her husband Fred Callum of Rockwall, TX and two sons, Claude and wife Delores and Dick and wife Kathie both of McCook, one sister Rose Peter of Sutton, NE and a brother Joe Joyce and wife Terri of Huntington Station, Long Island, NY; 18 grandchildren and 24 great grandchildren; two step granddaughters, 14 step great grandchildren and one step great-great grandson.

Memorials were being accepted to St. Patrick’s School, Hillcrest Nursing Home or in her name.

The Rosary Service was Friday, September 14, 2007 at 7:00 pm at Carpenter Breland Funeral Home. Mass of Christian Burial took place on Saturday, September 15, 2007 at 2:00 pm at St. Patrick’s Church with Fr. Gary Brethour and Fr. Lawrence Ejiofo officiating. Burial at St. Patrick’s Calvary cemetery.

Ruth Ellen (Tourtellotte) Callan

Ruth Ellen Callan, age 90, died Monday, October 8, 2007 at Hillcrest Nursing Home.

She was born September 9, 1917, in Mullen, Nebraska to Harold and Susie (O’Brien) Tourtellotte. She grew up and lived in McCook. She attended grade school and graduated from McCook High School in 1936.

In 1937, she married Stanley Dale Callan. She was employed with the NorthWestern Bell telephone company in 1943, as an operator supervisor. In 1968, she was promoted to traffic manager and continued to work for NorthWestern Bell for 30 years.

She was a member of the Assembly of God Church in McCook.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Harold and Susie; two brothers, Earl Tourtellotte, Cliff Tourtellotte; two infant sisters, Barbara Jean Tourtellotte and Margaret Suzanne Toutellotte; and her youngest son, David Callan in 1990.

She is survived by a son, Ron Callan and wife, Gayle of Columbus; daughter, Marilynn Jezek of McCook; two daughters-in-law, Diane Clark of McCook and Karen Callan of Julesburg, Co.; nine grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; four great-great- grandchildren; several nieces; and one nephew.

In lieu of flowers memorials were to be given in her name.

Funeral services were Friday at 11 a.m. at the First Assembly of God with Pastor Eddie Wright officiating. Inurnment took place at Memorial Park cemetery.

Myrlin A. Burton

Myrlin “Mert” Arthur Burton, 77, of Bartley, died Sunday, April 22, 2007, at Community Hospital in McCook, Nebraska. He had been a resident of Hillcrest Nursing Home since August of 2004.

He was born April 8, 1930, to William A. and Elma E. (Hodgkin) Burton at Bartley, Nebraska, and graduated from Bartley High School in 1948.

On May 10, 1952, he married Donna L. Stewart at the Bartley Christian Church. They made their home on the farm north of Bartley. To this union two children were born, William and Patricia.

He entered the US Army on December 4, 1951, and was stationed in Fairbanks, Alaska, during the Korean War. He transferred to the Army Reserve on December 2, 1953, and was honorably discharged on December 3, 1959.

Myrlin farmed for 47 years and was employed by Klein’s Motor and Electric for 23 years. He served as secretary of School District 21 and was an elder, deacon, and teacher at the Bartley Christian Church. In 2006, he transferred his membership to the McCook Christian Church, and was the Hillcrest American Heart Association King. His greatest joys were his children and grandchildren. Myrlin also enjoyed Husker football, animals, bird watching, air rifle and pistol target shooting.

Myrlin was preceded in death by his wife Donna, on April 22, 2006; his parents, William and Elma; brothers Gerald and Francis; son-in-law, Danny Sughroue; and infant granddaughter, Brittany Lee Burton.

Survivors include his daughter, Patricia Smith, and husband, Tom of Bartley; son, William “Bill” Burton and wife, Coralyn “Cori” of McCook; five grandchildren, Danette Sughroue of Kearney, Tye Smith of Bartley, Brett, Brooke, and Breanne Burton of McCook; sister Audrey Troester of McCook and twin sister and brother-in-law Marion and Harold Raburn of Holdrege; sisters-in-law Grace Burton and Goldene Burton; brother-in-law Kenneth Stewart and wife, Donna all of Bartley.

Memorials may be given in his name to McCook Christian Church.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, April 25, 2007 at 10:30 a.m. at McCook Christian Church with Pastor Clark Bates officiating. Burial was in the Bartley cemetery.

Thomas F. Burns

Thomas F. Burns, age 88, died Sunday May 6, 2007 at McCook Community Hospital.

He was born January 25, 1919 to Thomas A. and Margaret (Free) Burns at Cheyenne, WY. He graduated from Holy Family High School in 1935 and Regis College in Denver, where he received all conference recognition in football.

He married Beatrice “Betty” Jean McMullen in Denver on November 6, 1941.

He was in the U.S. Army Air Corp as an Instructor Pilot for four years, and an engineer on Burlington Northern for 42 years. He enjoyed playing racquetball; he was a fan of all Bison sports, the Denver Broncos, and the Nebraska Cornhuskers. He coached Saint Vincent DePaul football and St Patrick’s basketball. He enjoyed his kids and grandkids in all their activities.

He was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, the Elks Club, Burlington Northern Past Time as President, Knights of Columbus, the American Legion, the Eagles Club, and was named Eagles Father of the Year in 1983.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife of 63 years, Betty on January 13, 2005; one granddaughter, Brenda Hamrick; eight brothers and sisters, Gerald, Francis, Bonnie, John Francis, Ruth, Helen, Robert, and Barbara Jean.

He is survived by his sons, Joseph Burns and special friend, Loretta Minard, Patrick Burns, Robert Burns and wife, Geri; daughter, Cheryl Hamrick and husband, Joseph all of McCook; brother, Joe Burns and wife, Joanie; sister, Rosemary Chisholm and husband, John all of Denver; 11 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

Memorials may be given in his name.

Rosary was on Wednesday, May 9, 2007 at 7:00 p.m. at Carpenter Breland Funeral Home.

Mass of Christian Burial was held on Thursday, May 10, 2007 at St. Patrick's Catholic Church at 11:00 a.m. with Father Gary Brethour as Celebrant.

Burial was in the Calvary cemetery.

Carpenter Breland Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Teresa Carol (Ridpath) Brown

Teresa Carol Brown, 48 of Culbertson died Tuesday, May 8, 2007 at Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney.

She was born June 7, 1958 in McCook to Earl Donald and Marcella Marie (Keegan) Ridpath. She grew up in Indianola and attended Republican Valley Schools. She received her GED and graduated from McCook Beauty Academy.

On July 1, 1976 she married Tim Brown in Oberlin Kansas. To this union three children were born.

Teresa lived in this area all her life and loved babysitting her granddaughter.

She was preceded in death by: her parents; a son, Anthony; and by brothers, Thomas, Donald; and sisters, Karen, Roselyn and Cherie.

Survivors include: her husband, Tim of McCook; two daughters, Kristi and Tim Eggers of Culbertson and Tori Brown of McCook; one granddaughter, Jorden Brown of Culbertson; five brothers, Richard, Shawn, Michael, Robert and Kenneth; three sisters, Mary, Kathleen and Patrica.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given in her name.

Rosary was Friday at 7 p.m. at Carpenter Breland Funeral Home in McCook.

Mass of Christian Burial was Saturday at 10 a.m. at St. Catherine’s Catholic Church in Indianola with Father Paul Witt officiating. Burial was in St. Catherine’s cemetery.

James R. Brougham

James Edward Brougham, Jr. died at his home in Palisade, Monday, October 8, 2007. He was 75 years old.

He was born March 6, 1932 to James E. and Ruth Josephine (Johnson) Brougham, Sr. at Mondovi, WI. He graduated from Mondovi High School.

He served during the Korean Conflict in the U.S. Navy 1951-1955.

James worked in concrete construction most of his life and he loved fishing, hunting and many different sports. He had lived in the Palisade and Hamlet area for 20 years.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Gina and a brother, Ron Brougham.

Survivors include: sons, Ron and wife Shelley Brougham of Omaha, Ray and wife Tracy Schlegel of Columbus and Jonathan (Thomas) Brougham of Wauneta; daughters, Robin and husband Tommy Tejcka of Edison, Karen and husband Tim Trones of Mondovi, WI and Robby Ruth of Oklahoma; two brothers, Dick and wife Charlie Brougham of Scottsbluff and Roger Brougham of Cambridge; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were Thursday, October 11th, 10:00 a.m. C.S.T. at the Hamlet Union Church with Pastor Marshall Erickson officiating. Burial took place at Ft. McPherson National cemetery.

Memorials were to be given in his name.
