Sarah 'Sally' B. (Trawick) Floyd

Sarah “Sally” B. Floyd of Hayes Center died Thursday, June 21, 2007 at Sunset Haven Nursing Home in Curtis. She was 94 years old.

Sally was born on August 7, 1912 at Quitman, Arkansas to George Washington and Cora Alice (Thompson) Trawick. She moved to Little Rock in 1928 where she worked as a stenographer until 1942. During World War II she worked for the Maritime Commission in Oakland, CA.

On June 27, 1942, she married Justin Leon Floyd in Los Angeles, CA. To this union three sons were born. They moved to Hayes County in November of 1945 where Sally was a homemaker.

Sally was a member of the Hayes Center Bethel Baptist Church. She was active in the Mary Jane’s Extension Club. Her hobbies included quilting and gardening. She will be missed by her family for her delicious cooking, her laughter and love, her clean house and her devotion to her family.

Preceding her in death were her parents; an infant brother and infant sister; two sisters, Carmen Gunn and Martha Douglas; three brothers, Floyd, Franklin and Dick Trawick; one grandson, Thomas Floyd; and sister-in-law, Pauline, Floyd.

Survivors include her beloved husband of almost 65 years, Justin Floyd of Hayes Center; three sons, Roger Floyd and wife, Loretta, of Hayes Center, Randy Floyd and wife, Elaine, of Sandia Park, NM and Ray Floyd and wife, Marjorie, of Douglas, WY; one sister, Violette Pitchell of Quitman, AR; seven grandchildren, Nicole and husband, DeVern Younger, Andrew Floyd and wife, Josie, Michael Floyd and special friend, Melissa Florom, Stephen Floyd and wife, Tiffani, Dusti and husband, John Boyer, Aaron Floyd and Graham Floyd; and 11 great- grandchildren, Desirré Younger, Chance Younger, Tyrell Younger, Bennett Floyd, Connor Floyd, Garrett Floyd, Dalton Boyer, Markie Boyer, Jayann Floyd, Tesla and Josie Florom.

Memorials may be given in her name.

Funeral services were Monday, June 25, 2007, 10:00 at the Bethel Baptist Church in Hayes Center with Pastor Gaylord DeMoure officiating. Burial took place in the Hayes Center cemetery.

Neal Roderick Fidler

Neal Roderick Fidler of McCook died Monday, February 12, 2007 at the Cambridge Hospital. He was 79 years old.

Neal was born on December 14, 1927 at McCook to Myrl L. and Louise T. (Koitsch) Fidler. He graduated from McCook High School in 1945.

On June 13, 1945 he entered the US Navy and served during World War II. He was stationed in the Philippine Islands. Neal was honorably discharged on August 20, 1946. On September 24, 1952, he was recalled into the Reserves and served during the Korean War. He was stationed on the reconstructed USS Yorktown. He was honorably discharged on March 18, 1953.

Neal married Bettie Clasby at Peace Lutheran Church in McCook on June 6, 1948. To this union three children were born. They made their home in McCook where Neal was employed as a conductor for Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad.

Neal was a member of Peace Lutheran Church, Lutheran Laymen’s League, Veteran’s of Foreign Wars and American Legion. Neal was known throughout the area for his life-like carvings of birds, ducks and fish. His favorite times were those spent with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Preceding him in death were his parents, Myrl and Louise Fidler; son-in-law, Bradley King; sister, Vivian Pasquan; brothers, CV “Babe” Fidler, Marion Fidler, and Harold Fidler.

Survivors include his wife Bettie of 58 years; son, Dr. Jeff L. and wife, Dr. Mary Fidler of Rochester, MN; two daughters, Vicki King of Grand Island; and Cathy and husband, Tom Broz of McCook; six grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

Memorials may be given in his name.

Funeral services were Friday, February 16, 2007, at 10:00 a.m. at Peace Lutheran Church with Pastor Brad Rick and Pastor Randy Wahl officiating. Burial was in Memorial Park cemetery.

Herman Henry William Ficken

Herman Henry William Ficken passed away Sunday, September 30, 2007 at Community Hospital in McCook. He was 94.

He was born November 1, 1912 to John and Johanna (Noltensmeier) Ficken in Frontier County, Nebraska.

He was baptized December 15, 1912 and confirmed May 23, 1926, all at the Salem Lutheran Church. He attended rural and parochial school for nine years.

He married Edna Buell on May 4, 1938 at rural Salem Lutheran Church. To this union three daughters were born, seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. They were a great source of joy in his later years. He was a loving father and husband and will be greatly missed.

He was a lifetime farmer. In August of 1983 they moved to Elwood to retire. There he enjoyed his yard work, flowers, and friends. In February 2004 illness forced him to move to Willow Ridge in McCook until his death.

He was presently a member of Peace Lutheran Church in McCook and previously a longtime member of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Elwood. He was very active in church work and served on various church boards. He served on school boards and was also active in various community organizations.

He is survived by his wife, Edna of 69 years; three daughters, Janet Hein and husband, Robert of McCook, Joan Burke and husband, Larry of Elwood and Carole Dreher and husband, Robert of Kearney; two brothers, Raymond Ficken and wife, Betty of Cambridge and Harvey Ficken and wife, Corrine of Eustis; seven grandchildren, Laura Preston and husband, Tom of Omaha, Randall Hein and wife, Dana of Lincoln, Jeff Burke of Elwood, Jerrod Burke and wife, Doris of Curtis, Sharon Livingston and husband, Lath of Minden, Angela Kugler and husband, Michael of Lincoln, Jodi Shea and husband, Alec of Laramie, WY; eight great-grandchildren, Katherine Preston, Evan Hein, Lauren and Logan Burke, Kaylee and Kelcie Burke, Leah Livingston, Olivia Kugler; and many relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Arthur Ficken; and sister, Alvena Wickenkamp.

Funeral services were at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Elwood on October 5, 2007 at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor Jeff Ernstmeier officiating. Burial took place in the Elwood cemetery.

Martha Ellen Evans

Martha Ellen Evans died at Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney Monday, October 8, 2007 following a very short battle with cancer. She was 30 years old.

She was born March 11, 1977 to Darrell W. and Teresa M. Evans at Holyoke, CO. She graduated from Hayes Center High School in 1995 as the class Salutatorian. In high school she was involved with 4-H & FFA and became interested in raising cattle.

She graduated from McCook Community College in 1997 and the University of Wyoming in Laramie in 1999. She worked at the IBP Meat Plant in Lexington from 2000 – 2004 and then has worked for Fairbanks-Case/IH International Farm Equipment as a parts person.

She enjoyed gardening (especially growing sunflowers), photography and woodworking. Martha crafted wooden chests, and raised cattle. In Eustis, she was a volunteer T-Ball coach and served on the EMT Rescue crew..

She was preceded in death by her grandparents, and an uncle, Harold Evans.

Survivors include her parents, Darrell & Terri of Palisade; brothers, Kiley Evans of Laramie, WY, and Scott and wife Margie of Indianola; a sister LuAnn and husband Rod Rector of Wauneta; a grandfather, C.J. Donaldson of Anaheim, CA.; and a nephew Duncan & nieces, Ayla and Cameo.

Funeral services were Thursday at 10:30 at the United Methodist Church in Eustis with Pastor Fay Ann Blaylock and Rev. Tess Hufford officiating. Burial took place in the Hayes Center cemetery.

Memorials were to be given in her name.

Christopher L. Esch

Christopher L. Esch of Indianola, Nebr. died Friday, September 14, 2007 at Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney. He was 24 years old.

Chris was born on July 28, 1983 in McCook to Vernon and Sara (Doyle) Esch. He has been a special needs person since birth. He attended the Development Center in McCook. Chris enjoyed quality time with his family attending church, sporting events, and watching TV.

Preceding him in death were his grandparents, Robert & Emma Mae Doyle and Walter and Rose Esch and second wife, Emma Esch.

Survivors include his parents, Vernon and Sara of rural Indianola; three brothers, Gene of Indianola, Brian and wife, Mary of McCook, Darren and wife, Tyler of Indianola; and nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were Tuesday, September 18 at 10:30 a.m. at the St. John’s Lutheran Church with Pastor Kevin Schnakenberg officiating. Burial took place in Memorial Park cemetery in McCook.

Memorials were to be given for special needs equipment.

Wayne Donald Ely

Wayne Donald Ely died Saturday, October 6, 2007 at Community Hospital in McCook. He was 83 years old.

Wayne was born on October 28, 1923 at McCook to Orin P. and Opal Theresa (Troedsen) Ely. He graduated from McCook High School in 1941.

Memorials may be given in his name.

Funeral services were Tuesday, October 9, 2007, 10:00 a.m. at First Congregational Church with Pastor Steve Bales officiating. Burial took place in Memorial Park cemetery with a military honor committal.

Maxine Lucille (Willsey) Ele

Maxine Lucille Ele, of McCook died Monday, May 7, 2007 at Hillcrest Nursing Home. She was 83 years old.

Maxine was born on November 10, 1923 at Orleans, Nebraska to Delburn Fay and Irene Anna (Ball) Willsey. The family moved to Wauneta where Maxine graduated from high school.

On May 13, 1943, she married Winfield LeRoy “Pat” Ele at McCook. To this union four children were born. They made their home in Wauneta for awhile before moving their family to McCook. Maxine was a homemaker and also worked for TRW as a machinist.

She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Wauneta. She was a den mother for the Cub Scouts for many years. In her free time she enjoyed square dancing, playing cards, crocheting and sewing. Her most enjoyment came from spending time with her children and grandchildren.

Preceding her in death were her parents, Delburn and Irene Willsey; and two sisters, Berdeane Jussel Stewart and Verlene Wright.

Survivors include her husband of almost 64 years, Pat Ele of McCook; two daughters, Patricia and husband, Gerald Mitchem and Mary and husband, Tom Vontz, all of McCook; two sons, Robert Ele of Lincoln and Ned Ele and wife, Kim, of Scottsbluff; one brother, Delburn Willsey and wife, Betty, of Sierra Vista, AZ; 12 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be given in her name.

A funeral service was Friday, May 11, 2007, 10:30 a.m., at Carpenter Breland Chapel with Jerry Beckenhauer officiating. Burial took place at Riverside cemetery in Wauneta.

Louise Faye (Steward) Echols

Louise Faye Echols died Thursday, November 29, 2007 at Eldorado Nursing Home. She was 92 years old.

She was born on July 20, 1915 in Alva, OK to Cyrus Sylvester and Linda Bell (Barney) Steward. She graduated from High School in Vega, TX in 1933. She then married William Echols on July 10, 1933 also Vega, TX.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Cyrus and Linda, her husband, William, two sons, Mark and Robert Lee, one daughter in infancy, Blossom, one brother, Earl, and three sisters Marie McKendry, Opal Arnett, and Louie Lea Hartman.

She is survived by six sons, Paul of Hayes Center, James and wife, Lois of Hayes Center, Aaron and wife, Marian of Alliance, Ohio, Daniel of Pueblo, CO, Phillip and wife, Mary of Falcon, CO; Reuben of Hayes Center; one daughter, Esther Hicks and husband, George of Ontario, Canada; two sisters, Jean Steward of Hayes Center; and Fern Saine of Harrison, AR; 24 grandchildren and 27 great grandchildren.

Louise was talented in many ways and showed it by her sewing, crocheting, and cross-stitch. She also loved to read. She wrote one book about her husband and had another book finished about her life and family. She loved art and expressed it in some of her drawings and oil paintings.

Funeral services were at Carpenter Breland Funeral Home Wednesday, December 5, 2007 at 10:00 a.m. with James Echols officiating.

Yule G. Dorwart

Yule G. Dorwart of McCook died Sunday, September 23, 2007 at Ponderosa Villa Nursing Home in Crawford, NE. He was 85 years old.

Yule was born on August 4, 1922, in McCook to Yule W. and Theresa Francis (Gatewood) Dorwart. He graduated from McCook High School in 1942 and attended McCook Junior College.

On November 13, 1942, he entered the US Navy and served in the South Pacific during World War II. He was honorably discharged on January 14, 1946.

Yule was united in marriage to Geraldine “Jerry” R.M. Barth in McCook on July28, 1946. To this union four sons were born. Among the different jobs Yule had the ones he was most proud of were his security officer positions at Hugh’s Aircraft and Aerojet both based in California. In 1965 they moved to McCook where he worked until he retired.

He was a member of Peace Lutheran Church, American Legion and Veteran’s of Foreign Wars. Among his hobbies were bird carving, hunting, and raising ducks and pigeons.

Preceding him in death were his parents, Yule and Theresa Dorwart; and one son, Charles Dorwart.

Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Jerry Dorwart now living in Lusk, WY; sons, Raymond Alan Dorwart and wife, Tammy, and their son Daniel of Guthrie, OK, Barth Eugene Dorwart and wife, Velvet, and their daughter, Jocelyn and sons, Cole, Cort and Coop of Lusk, WY and Kraig Robert Dorwart and wife, Gina, and their daughters, Sasha and Siera of Lincoln; and one brother, Dr. John Dorwart and wife, Marilyn, of North Platte.

Memorials were directed to be given in his name to Ponderosa Villa of Crawford, Nebraska.

Funeral services were Wednesday, September 26, 2007, 2:00 p.m. at Peace Lutheran Church with Pastor Bradley Rick. Burial took place in Memorial Park cemetery.

Dorothy Louise (Wolf) Loghry

Dorothy Louise (Wolf) Loghry age 89 of Omaha Nebraska died Tuesday, May 22 2007 at Bergen Mercy Hospital in Omaha.

She was born September 27, 1917 in Frontier County, Nebraska to Reece and Ruth (Cathcart) Wolf. She attended school in rural Frontier County and graduated from the University Of Nebraska School Of Agriculture in 1936.

Dorothy grew up at Quick, Nebraska where her father owned the general store and her mother was the Post Mistress. On January 31, 1938 she was united in marriage to Joseph Emerson Loghry at Maywood. To this union two children were born, Mary Anne and Leroy James.

Joe and Dorothy farmed in the Quick area until his death in 1951. Dorothy and her two young children remained on the farm until 1955 when she moved to McCook. She was employed by Zephyer Cleaners until their closing. She became employed by McCook Schools Cafeteria and retired in 1967.

She was a professional seamstress for Turman’s Store for Men, Clapp’s Store for Women and Gen’s Bridal Shop. She was employed by the Nebraska National Guard as a facilities engineer retiring in 1990. She lived in McCook until 2002 when she moved to Omaha.

Dorothy became a member of the McCook Memorial United Methodist Church in 1963. She was a member of the Business and Professional Women of McCook, and the Daughters of the American Revolution.

In Dorothy’s pastime, she loved to sew for her family and do ceramics. She kept a beautiful yard with gorgeous flowers and had a nice garden every year to share with others. She spent the winters in Omaha, with her daughter Mary Anne from 1991-2001. In 2002 she sold her home in McCook and moved to Omaha to be with her daughter.

Preceding her in death were her parents, Reece and Ruth Wolf; her husband, Joseph; four brothers, Grant, Deane, Cecil, and Theodore Wolf; and one sister, Mabel.

She leaves to mourn her passing: a daughter, Mary Anne O’Dea of Omaha and a son, Leroy Loghry and wife Alene of Edison; a grandson, John J. Loghry of Arapahoe; two great-grandchildren, Amanda and Bradlee Loghry of Arapahoe; two sisters-in-law, Adele Wolf of Baldwin Park, California and Glee Wolf of Renton, Washington; Dorothy will be remembered with love and joy by a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, family and friends.

Memorials may be given in her name.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, May 29, 2007 at 2:00 p.m. at Carpenter Breland Funeral Home in McCook with Pastor Kirk Einspahr officiating. Burial was in the Maywood cemetery.
