Robert E. Henton

Robert E. “Bob” Henton died Monday, November 5, 2007 at his home in McCook. He was 81 years old.

Bob was born on October 6, 1926, at McCook to Burr M. and Vaire (Godown) Henton. He graduated from Danbury High School in 1944. After graduation, he entered the US Navy on July 16, 1944 and served during World War II. He was honorably discharged on May 2, 1946.

He continued his education at McCook Junior College and Kearney State College. He played basketball for the McCook Indians and Kearney Antelopes scoring 30 points per game for both teams. He received his Masters Degree from the University of Northern Colorado in Greeley, CO.

Bob was united in marriage to Delores M. Blake on June 22, 1947 at Danbury. To this union three children were born. They made their home in Chappell where Bob taught school and was head basketball and assistant football coach for ten years. While coaching in Chappell, Bob had much success with many wins. He played basketball for the Chappell town team. He took the top individual award honors at the Jaycee Gold Medal Basketball Tournament in Kimball. He was voted the outstanding player award for the third time, best offensive player, selected for the first offensive team and was the highest scoring player of the tournament. His floor game was instrumental in leading Chappell to the championship. His hook shots were accurate and exceedingly troublesome to rivals. He also played AAU basketball in Denver in the season of 1951, where he was chosen All-American Gold Medal First Team.

Bob also played baseball for Chappell in the West Central Division as a pitcher. He was also hired to pitch for Venango, Brule and Ogallala baseball teams.

The couple returned to McCook in 1957 where Bob became coach for the McCook College Indians basketball team and assistant coach for the football team. He led the teams in many successful championships and was nominated for Coach of the Year. He was so proud of the fact that he could have winning seasons with just area athletes playing on his teams. He later worked for the fund raising department of Reader’s Digest for 28 years, which he enjoyed because of his continued association with students and teachers.

He was a member of Memorial United Methodist Church and lifetime member of McCook Elk’s Club and the Lebanon American Legion Post #0313.

Preceding him in death were his parents, Burr and Vaire Henton; two sisters, Shirley Roach and Phyllis Lingo; and three brothers, Richard, Bill and Willis Henton.

Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Delores Henton of McCook; two sons, Dan Henton of Columbus, OH and Ken Henton and wife, Paula, of Kansas City, KS; daughter, Carolyn and husband, Anthony Masi, of Westminster, CO; two brothers, Garnet Henton and wife, Dorothy, of McCook and Delmar Henton of Spokane, WA; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews, family and a host of friends.

Memorials were to be given in his name.

Funeral services were Friday, November 9th, 2007, 11:00 a.m. at Memorial United Methodist Church with the Rev. Dr. Jeff Thurman officiating. Burial took place in Memorial Park cemetery.

Ray E. Henry

Ray E. Henry passed away on November 4, 2007 at the Great Plains Medical Center in North Platte. He was 83 years old.

Ray was born on April 30, 1924 at Arnold to Ira M. and Alveda (Anderson) Henry.

He was a ranch foreman for the Starr Ranch at Stapleton and Swift Ranch at Thedford. In 1962, he moved to North Platte where he became a carpenter working for Dowhower Construction. He later went into business for himself.

The things he enjoyed most were rodeo, horses and the cowboy way of life.

Preceding him in death were his parents, Ira and Alveda Henry; brother, Lawrence Henry; and sister, Ethel Johnson.

Survivors include his son, Neil Henry and wife, Jayne, of Imperial; daughter, Susan Henry of McCook; granddaughter, Tasha and husband, Aaron Nelson and great-grandson, Kyle Nelson of Lincoln; sister, Ida Miller of Kennewick, WA; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A private family memorial service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers memorials may be given to Nebraska High School Rodeo Endowment Fund. They may be sent to NHSRA, Becky Dailey, PO Box 10, Arnold, NE 69120.

Robert Anthony Hammond

Robert “B.A.W.B.” Anthony Hammond, age 27, died Saturday, July 14, 2007 in West Virginia.

He was born on February 24, 1980 to John E. Hammond and Carol Ann Bybee in Omaha. He graduated from McCook High School in 1998.

He enjoyed football, Bison, Huskers, and was a Broncos fan. He spent all the time he could with his daughter and his family. Bawb also enjoyed playing pool, football, and playing horseshoes. He especially enjoyed spending time with his daughter and family.

He was preceded in death by his grandfather, Robert Bybee; great-grandparents, Everette and Hazelle “Toots” Bybee, great-grandparents, Ervin and Millie Bailey; great-grandmother, Grace McDowell, Uncle George Hammond, grandmother, Laura Stuck, uncle, Leonard Gonzales.

Bawb is survived by his mother, Carol Ann Lambert and step-father Steve Lambert of McCook; Fathers, John E. Hammond of North Platte; Robert Stuck and Steve and Sherri Gonzales of McCook; Special Friend, Stephanie Anderson; Daughter, Joslyn M. Hammond and unborn child, all of McCook; Brothers, Dustin W. Stuck of McCook, Luke and John Warburton and Gabe Critchfield of McCook; James Mitchell of Culbertson and Christopher Huddleston of Tustin, CA; Sisters, Renae Stuck and Anna Lambert both of McCook; Melissa Hammond of North Platte, Shelly Gonzales of Omaha, and Stacy Gonzales of McCook; Rainie Stuck and Stormie Pace of Fresno, CA; Rhonda Lindquist of McCook and Shanna McCuin of Arkansas, Special friends include, Russell Kennedy of McCook Cory Barber of West Virgina, and Roger Workmeister of McCook; Grandmothers, DeWinta McDowell of Palisade and Shirley Peters of McCook; Grandparents, Gary and Donna Lambert of McCook, Wayne Stuck of Texas; Special Nephews, Jackson R. Bybee and Mason A. Kennedy both of McCook and many nieces, nephews, and cousins; and friends.

Memorials may be given in his name.

Memorial services will be at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, July 21, 2007 at Carpenter Breland Funeral Home. A Balloon release will take place at Memorial Park cemetery.

Melvin Hall

Melvin "Shorty" Hall, age 88, of Watertown, South Dakota passed away November 25, 2007 in Watertown.

Funeral services were 10:30 a.m. Thursday, November 29, 2007 at Grace Lutheran Church in Watertown with Pastor Steve Lauricella officiating. Marcia Jelsma was the organist with Judy Everson as soloist.

Interment took place in Mt. Hope cemetery with military honors conducted by Codington County American Legion Post 17.

Casketbearers were Larry Picht, Keith Stroup, Don Ragles, Gary Veeder and Wayne Becking.

Melvin Bartlett Hall, better known as "Shorty" to his many friends, was born March 2, 1919 to Avery and Edna (Hagwood) Hall in White Owl, South Dakota. He grew up near Peoria, Illinois, attended school in Hope Dale Illinois and graduated from Hope Dale High School. He farmed near Galesburg, Illinois for 14 years before entering the Army Air Corp on December 22, 1941. Shorty served in the Asiatic-Pacific Theatre as a flight engineer on B-17 bombers. In 1944, he was transferred to Watertown, South Dakota to train on B-29 bombers which were pressurized and flew at a much higher altitude of 30, 000 feet. He met Betty Jean Vetter in 1944 and they were married on July 8, 1945 in Watertown. After his discharge on November 6, 1945, Shorty worked for Beier Chevrolet and Sander Chevrolet where he had been parts manager, service manager and sales manager. Shorty later worked at Brekke Chevrolet in Clark for six years before becoming the Warranty Consultant at Sharp Chevrolet and then retired in 1988.

Shorty enjoyed hunting, gardening, dancing, cooking and spending time visiting with his many friends.

He was a member of Grace Lutheran Church and Codington County American Legion Post 17.

Shorty Hall passed away on November 25, 2007 in Watertown, South Dakota, at the age of 88.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Betty; four sisters, Charlotte, Violet, Eva and Eugenia; and one brother, Charlie.

He is survived by one daughter, Judy Ronke of Creve Coeur, IL; one son, Jim and his wife, Donna Hall of McCook, NE; one sister, Kay Horst of Cheyenne, WY; five grandchildren; three step grandchildren; eight great grandchildren; and six step great-grandchildren; and constant companion, Phyllis Gillies of Watertown, SD.

Pauline (Korbe) Marks

Pauline Marks died Thursday, June 28, 2007 at her home in McCook. She was 67 years old.

Pauline and her twin brother, Paul, were born on April 5, 1940 at Sterling, CO to Matthew Joseph and Anna Mary (Gertner) Korbe. She attended St. Anthony’s Elementary Grade School and graduated from Iliff High School in 1958. In 1984, she returned to school and earned her Licensed Practical Nursing Degree.

In August of 1968, she married George Irvin Marks in Sidney, NE. They eventually made their home in McCook where Pauline worked at Alco as an Assistant Manager for Alco-Duckwall; Wal-Mart and JC Penney. She was most recently working as a nanny.

She was a member of St. Anthony’s Catholic Church, in Sterling and attended St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in McCook.

In her free time Pauline loved to sew and do craft work. She enjoyed camping and fishing. Her most enjoyment came from spending time with her children and grandchildren.

Preceding her in death were her parents, Matthew and Anna Korbe; and husband, George Marks, Sr.

Survivors include her three sons, Harry Marks, and wife, Robin, of Indianola, Bill Adams and wife, Kitty, of Trenton, and George Marks, Jr. of Sterling, CO; two daughters, Liza Adams of Denver, CO and Monti Jo and husband, Dance Adams, of Odessa; four brothers, Matthew Korbe and wife, Doris, Charles Korbe and wife, Mary, twin brother Paul Korbe and wife, Wilma, and David Korbe and wife, Anne, all of Sterling; two sisters, Martha and husband, Michael Grams, of Aurora, CO and Nancy and husband, John Jilling, of Denver; seven grandchildren, Maranda Adams, Alexis Marks, Heather Adams, Ryan Freeze, Anthony Adams, Hannah Marks and Shannon Marks; one great-grandson, David; numerous nieces and nephews; and beloved and faithful dog, Scout.

Memorials were to be given in her name.

Mass of Christian burial took place on Tuesday, July 10, 2007, at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Sterling, CO with Father Robert Wedow as Celebrant. Inurnment followed at Riverview cemetery in Sterling.

Norma G. (Richter) Pennington

Norma G. (Richter) Pennington, loving wife, mother, grandmother, and friend passed away April 6, 2007 at the age of 70. Formerly of Omaha, she resided in Crestview, FL.

Norma was born November 12, 1936, in Hayes Center, NE. She graduated from McCook High School in 1954.

Preceding her in death were her parents, Clarence and Hazel (Hayward) Richter.

Survivors include her husband, Larry Pennington of Crestview, FL; sisters, Twila (Dean) Brown of San Diego, CA and Verda Wegener of McCook; daughters, Paula (Mark) Kaestner of Weatherford, TX, Ramonda (Kerry) Naylor of Omaha and Cassandra (Fred) Gregory of LaVista; sons, Christopher of Summerlin, NV and Anthony (Jessica) Richter of Omaha; stepsons, Larry Jr. of Poway, CA and Bobby Pennington of Arlington, TX; stepdaughters, Renee (Ralph) Schwarz of Nashua, NH and Tina (David) Condon of Saginaw, TX. Norma was grandmother to 15 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Memorial donations may be made to the American Heart Association.

Funeral services were held Thursday, April 12, 2007, 11:00 a.m. at Carpenter Breland Funeral Home, McCook, NE, with Pastor John Strecker-Baseler officiating. Interment was in Memorial Park cemetery.

Jonathan N. (McCart) Peterson

PFC Jonathan N. (McCart) Peterson, age 19, died Friday, May 25, 2007 at Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney as a result of an automobile accident.

He was born September 11, 1987 in Liberal, Kansas to Valery A. (Lira) McCart. He graduated from McCook High School in May of 2005 and joined the U.S. Army on July 26, 2005. He attended basic training in Fort Jackson, SC and AIT in Fort Gorden, GA. He was then stationed at Fort Lewis, WA and then transferred to Rose Barricks Army Base near Vilseck, Germany where he was an Information Systems Operator and Maintainer and worked specifically as a Local Area Network Manager. He was home on leave at the time of the accident.

Jonny was also an organ donor. His heart, liver, both kidneys and pancreas were able to be placed into needy recipients.

He was preceded in death by his great grandfather, D.J. Perez and great grandfather, Manuel Vieyra; and best friends, Clayton “Claytumbo” Pierson and Christopher “Botz” Botsford.

Survivors include his mother, Valery A. McCart of Cambridge; two sisters, Jessica M. Peterson & son Nikolas Malleck of McCook and Jayme L. Peterson of Kearney; grandparents, Jesse & Delores Lira of Hays; great-grandmothers, Mary Gomez of North Platte and Rosie Perez of Wellington, Kansas; three uncles, Johnny Lira and wife Marla of Ulysses, Kansas, Jeffrey Lira and wife Carrie of Ottawa, Kansas and Rick Littlejohn & wife Steffanie of Maize, Kansas; cousins, Kory Lira of Ulysses, Kansas, Lesha (Lira) Doyle and husband Sterling and son Connor of Ulysses, Kansas, J.P. Lira and Levi Lira of Gothenburg, Kansas, Jessica Littlejohn of Wichita, Kansas, Jamie (Littlejohn) and husband Pvt Nick Farinas of Wichita, Kansas; and best friend Chase Pierson of McCook.

Rosary was Wednesday at 7 p.m. at Carpenter Breland Funeral Home in McCook with Father Gary Brethour officiating. The funeral service was Thursday at 10:30 a.m. at the City Auditorium with Father (CPT) Brian Kane officiating. An honorable military burial took place in Memorial Park cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given in his name.

Daniel Patrick O'Neil

Daniel Patrick O'Neil died Tuesday, November 20, 2007 at Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney. He was 59 years old.

Daniel was born at St. Catherine's Hospital on August 5, 1948, in McCook to William P. and Catherine M. (Boehm) O'Neil. He attended St. Patrick's Grade School through the ninth grade. While there, he served as an altar boy and played basketball on the Knight's team. He graduated from McCook High School in 1966, attended McCook College, and later completed his education at the American Institute of Photography in New York City.

After college, he and Jim Liggett moved to Los Angeles, CA, where Dan lived for the next few years. He then ventured out to travel and backpack across the United States and two excursions through Europe. He also spent time on the island of Jamacia. Later, he moved to New York City to attend photography school. While there, Dan enjoyed the city life. He loved the arts and was blessed with the ability to draw, paint, and create metal sculptures. Dan was also a movie buff, remembering facts about the old black and white films along with modern day movies. He was an avid reader, enjoyed bicycling, and collecting music.

Proceeding him in death were his father, William P. O'Neil; and grandmother, Mary Etta Boehm.

Those left behind include his mother, Katie O'Neil of McCook; three brothers, Thomas O'Neil and wife, Marilynn, of McCook, Timothy O'Neil and wife, Diane, of Glendale, AZ and Dennis O'Neil of Goodland, KS; five sisters, Peggy and husband, Dick Rogers, of McCook, Patty O'Neil of Denver, CO, Rosemary and husband, George Dack, of East Helena, MT, Annie and husband, Alan Carlson, of Johnstown, CO and Maureen O'Neil of Grand Island; fifteen nieces and nephews, four great nieces and nephews, and a host of family and friends; and his beloved canine friends, Bailey and Tubby and feline friend, Sam.

Memorials were accepted in his name to the McCook Humane Society.

Rosary took place Thursday, November 22, 2007, 7:00 p.m. at Carpenter Breland Chapel. Memorial services were Friday, November 23, 2007, 1:00 p.m. at Carpenter Breland Chapel with Father Gary Brethour officiating. Inurnment took place in Calvary cemetery.

Rachel Clifton (Clifton) Odenbach

Rachel Clifton Odenbach, 91, died Saturday, May 12, 2007 at Hillcrest Nursing Home in McCook.

On September 26, 1915 she was born at Osakis, Minnesota to Ellis B and Christine M. (Christensen) Clifton. She attended schools in Minnesota and North Dakota. She married Raymond R. Odenbach in September, 1934, in Fargo, North Dakota.

Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband, Raymond; two daughters, Roberta and Carolyn and one brother, Clayton Clifton.

Survivors include her daughter, Virginia Clifton Odenbach of McCook; grandsons and wives, Douglas and Kathy Kochenderfer of Bossier City, Louisiana, Kevin and Tracy Kochenderfer of Omaha and James Kochenderfer and fiancée Kathy Braga of Gretna; three great-grandchildren, Erin Kochenderfer and fiancée Brigham Lambley of Vancouver, Washington, A1C Jason Kochenderfer of Fort Wayne, Indiana and Shane Kochenderfer of Omaha; one brother, Douglas Clifton of Eight Mile, Alabama.

Cremation has taken place and graveside services will be in Bellevue, Nebraska in July.
