Nicholas Andrew O'Dea

Nicholas Andrew O’Dea, died Friday, August 03, 2007 as a result of a motorcycle accident. He was 19.

He was born April 30, 1988 to Andrew V. and Lori J. (Hook) O’Dea in Cambridge. He graduated from Southwest High School in May 2007. He was enrolled in Mid-Plains Community College in North Platte. He attended McCook Christian Church.

He helped on the farm, and was involved in FFA and 4-H. He enjoyed football, basketball, softball and baseball.

He is survived by his parents, Andrew and Lori O’Dea; sister, Kelsey O’Dea all of McCook; Aunts and Uncles, Steve and Dawn O’Dea of McCook, Joyce and Darrel Potthoff of Johnson Lake, Beth O’Dea of McCook, Bob and Deanna Brown of Indianola, Pam and John Wagner of St. Louis, MO, Kevin and Marsha Krotter of Ocean Springs, MS, Bill and Jennifer O’Dea of Deer Park, WA, John and Michelle O’Dea of McCook; Grandparents, Jack and Evelyn Hook of McCook, Marilyn and Gordon Bohl of Denver, Carlton and Andrea O’Dea of McCook; great-grandmother, Helen Meyers of McCook; and special friend, Alisha Weaver of Bartley.

Memorials may be given in his name.

Funeral services were Monday, August 6, 2007 at 11:00 a.m. at McCook Christian Church with Pastor Clark Bates officiating. Burial took place in Memorial Park cemetery.

Carpenter Breland Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

William Joseph Nitsch

William “Joe” Joseph Nitsch, age 70, died Saturday, September 15, 2007 at the Cheyenne County Hospital in St. Francis, KS.

Joe was born on August 31, 1937 on the family farm in Hayes County, Nebraska to Carl Louis and Leona Elinor (Lewin) Nitsch. He attended country school through the eighth grade and graduated from Hayes Center High School in 1954.

On April 17, 1957, Joe volunteered into the U.S. Army attending basic training in Ft. Chaffee, AR. He was part of the Signal Corp. in Ft. Leonardwood, MO. He was honorably discharged on April 16, 1959.

He returned to Nebraska and worked for Bushman Construction and on the family farm. Joe married Sandra Kay Fraiser on July 23, 1960. To this union two children, Debra S. and Michael C. were born. The couple divorced in 1986.

Joe served over 30 years with the Hayes County Fire Department, acting as Fire Chief for several years. He was the Hayes Center Marshall and Hayes County Deputy Sheriff for seven years. He was an avid sports fan and drove the school activity bus. He not only followed the Hayes Center Cardinals, but also all of the grandkids sporting events. He made many trips to watch college sports that Hayes Center graduates were competing in. He also enjoyed fishing, golfing, hunting, canoeing and family, especially his grandchildren.

Preceding him in death were his parents, Carl and Leona Nitsch; and two sisters, Norma Jean Peterson and Carol Nadeen Fuller.

He is survived by his son, Michael Carl Nitsch and wife, Jackie of Hayes Center; daughter Debra Sue Gohl and partner, Lance Long of St. Francis, KS; and four grandchildren, Timothy James Gohl, Lorielle Renee Gohl, Shaina Rae Gohl and Jonathan Joseph Nitsch; three step-grandchildren, Faith Marie Cook, Jessica Lynn Rowden and Jerry Rolland Rowden; three step-great-grandchildren, Bailey Chandler Cook, Kayden Michael Merrit and Elijah Merrit. We will always love you, and you will be missed forever!

Memorials were to be given to the Joe Nitsch Sports Memorial Scholarship.

Funeral services took place on Thursday, September 20, 2007, 10:00 a.m. at the Union Congregational United Church of Christ with Pastor Fay Ann Blaylock officiating.

Burial in the Hayes Center cemetery.

Etta E. (Lawson) Nelms

Etta E. Nelms of Hayes Center died Tuesday, October 16, 2007 at the Heritage of Wauneta Nursing Home. She was 100.

She was born January 10, 1907 to John Henry and Melissa J. (Mulford) Lawson in Cambridge, Nebraska. She graduated from Bartley High School in 1926.

She married Vernie Ray Nelms on February 2, 1927 in Bartley. To this union three children were born, Leonard, LaVerna and Doris. They were owners and operators of Nelms Grocery Store in Hayes Center for 25 years. They retired in 1976.

She was an active member of Bethel Baptist Church, the American Legion Auxiliary, and the Federated Women’s Club. She was also active in the Hayes Center Senior Center.

She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Melissa Lawson; her husband, Vernie Nelms on January 21, 1988; six brothers, Clifford, Howard, Elvert, Frank, Jim and Lloyd Lawson; one sister, Clesta Lawson; sisters-in-law Nettie Lawson and Leona Lawson; and two grandsons, David Vlasin and Regan Vlasin.

She is survived by her son, Leonard Nelms and wife, Iris of Hayes Center; daughters, LaVerna Scott and husband, Roland of Emporia, Kansas and Doris Vlasin and husband, Joe of Hayes Center; sister Carrie Max of Cambridge; two sisters-in-law, May Lawson of Cambridge and Dara Lawson of Josuha Tree, CA; nine grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.

Memorials were to be given in her name.

Funeral services were Monday, October 22, 2007, 2:00 p.m. at Bethel Baptist Church in Hayes Center with Pastor Gaylord DeMoure officiating. Burial took place in the Hayes Center cemetery.

Maxine E. (Davidson) Myers

Maxine E. Myers died Thursday, November 29, 2007 at Hillcrest Nursing Home. She was 86.

She was born on September 6, 1921 in Republic, Kansas to Donald A. and Willetta (Larkins) Davidson. She graduated from High School in Byron, Nebr. in 1938.

She married Adair A. Myers on March 17, 1944 in McCook. To this union two daughters were born, Carla and Cathy. She worked at the Fox Theatre, Woolworth, and Montgomery Ward.

She was a member of McCook Christian Church.

She enjoyed her family, especially her grandchildren. Her hobbies included collecting roosters and chickens.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Donald and Willetta; sister, Phyllis Hartman; two brothers, Glen and Gene Davidson.

She is survived by her daughters, Carla Winters and husband, Dick, Cathy Heskett and husband, Mark all of McCook; four sisters, Atha Cassens of Superior, Ardeth Hansen of Hardy, Donna Jones of Clyde, KS, Barbara Hymas of Napa, ID; five grandchildren and seven grandchildren.

Memorials were to be given in her name to McCook Christian Church.

Funeral services were at McCook Christian Church Monday, December 3, 2007 at 10:30 p.m. with Pastor Clark Bates officiating. Burial took place in Memorial Park cemetery.

Donald Wayne Mullanix

Donald Wayne Mullanix of McCook, died Wednesday, May 16, 2007 at his farm in Frontier County. He was 78 years old.

Donald was born on February 14, 1929 in Red Willow County, Nebraska to Neal and Grace Vesper (Spaulding) Mullanix. He attended rural school and lived most of his life in the Maywood, Quick and McCook area.

He served in the U.S. Army Air Force from 1949-1952.

On March 2, 1952 Don married Donna Appleyard in Curtis. To this union three children were born and they lived on the farm in Frontier County until 1965 when they moved to McCook.

He was a member of the McCook Memorial United Methodist Church. He enjoyed playing ball, with the Quick Blue Jays, Curtis Cardinals, the Havana’s and McCook Farm Service. He also enjoyed ice fishing, working on the farm, custom combining and watching ballgames on television. Don hauled fruit from western slope of Colorado and this is where he got the nickname “Peaches”.

Preceding him in death were his parents, Neal & Grace Mullanix and two grandchildren, Amy and Tommy Leightner.

Survivors include his wife, Donna of McCook; children, Robert Mullanix and wife Jane of Sterling Colorado, Dianna Jo Lightner of Omaha and Sharon Kircher and husband Steve of McCook; grandchildren, Tracey Fisher and husband Eric of Indianola, Mike Mullanix of Sterling, Colorado, Glen Bowles, Matt Bowles both of Denver, Danny Lightner of Lincoln, Becky Lightner of Omaha, Jennifer and Logan Kircher of McCook and six great-grandchildren: and a brother Gerald Mullanix and wife Gladys of Grand Island.

Memorials were to be given in his name to the Memorial United Methodist Church in McCook.

Funeral services were held Monday, 11 a.m. at Memorial United Methodist Church in McCook with the Rev. Dr. Jeffrey Thurman officiating. Burial took place in Memorial Park cemetery.

Gerald Lee Moody

Gerald Lee Moody, 78 died Thursday, May 17, 2007 at Hillcrest Nursing Home in McCook.

He was born May 13, 1929 to Dwight and Alice Mae (Anderson) Moody in Greeley County, Nebraska. He attended school in Scotia. He moved to Holdrege and worked for Safeway.

In 1951 he married Nadine Williams in Holdrege and to this union three sons were born, Gregory, Mitchell and Bradley.

He worked for Safeway for 29 years. He moved to McCook in 1957.

He was a member and past Master of the Masonic Lodge and Eastern Star of Holdrege and the Congregational Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a grandson, Todd; one brother, Bob Moody and his grandparents.

Survivors include: Nadine Moody of McCook; his children and spouses, Greg and Cindy Moody of McCook, Mitchell and Fiona Moody of Omaha and Bradley and Robin Moody of LeMars, Iowa; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and a sister, Mary Jensen of Palo Alto, California.

Memorials were to be given in his name to Multiple Sclerosis Society.

Cremation was chosen and a Memorial service was held on Tue, May 22 at 10:30 a.m. at the First Congregational Church with Pastor Steve Bales officiating. Inurnment took place in Memorial Park cemetery.

Irene M. (Dunham) Modrell

Irene M. Modrell, of McCook, formerly of Palisade, died Sunday, February 18, 2007 at Hillcrest Nursing Home. She was 98 years old.

She was born May 11, 1908 in Hayes County on the farm to Birl S. and Stella M. (Cunningham) Dunham. She grew up in Hayes County and graduated in 1926 from Palisade High School.

She married Bernard Modrell November 8, 1928 in the bride’s home north of Palisade. To this union two children were born. They farmed and ranched north of Palisade, until they retired in 1971 and moved into Palisade.

She was a member of Palisade United Methodist Church, WSCS, Order of Eastern Star and the Jolly Jane’s Club. She was the church organist for many years. She was a homemaker and seamstress who also loved music, poetry, writing, crocheting, and quilting. She was a very thoughtful, giving and sharing mother.

She was preceded in death by parents; and husband in 1985; four siblings, Mabel, Ethel, Elmer, and Ada; one great-grandson, Danny Joe Jussel.

Survivors include: her son, James and wife Eloise Modrell of Algona, IA; and a daughter Bernadene “Bunnie” and husband Leroy Jussel of Wauneta; sister-in-law, Florence Modrell of McCook; five grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, memorials were to be given to the Palisade Ambulance and Volunteer Fire Department.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, February 21, 2007 11:00 a.m. CST at Carpenter Breland Chapel with Rev. Judy Dye officiating.

Burial took place in the Palisade cemetery.

Orville James Mockry

Orville James “Jim” Mockry died Sunday, October 28, 2007 at Community Hospital in McCook. He was 53 years old.

Jim was born on April 2, 1954 at Longmont, Colo., to Orville Hugo and Donna Berdena (Vandervort) Mockry. He graduated from Johnson County High School, Buffalo, Wyo., in 1972.

On May 28, 1977, he married Nita Kay Webb in McCook. To this union three children were born. She died on April 21, 1995. On September 11, 1999, he was united in marriage to Julie Ann Herman in McCook. He became step-father to two more daughters. They made their home in rural McCook. He was employed as a farmhand and worked for Red Willow County Fair Grounds.

Jim attended First Assembly of God. He was a Boy Scout as a child. He loved spending time with his horses and mules. His most pleasure in life came from being with his family especially his grandchildren.

Preceding him in death were his wife, Nita Kay; his maternal grandparents, Bill and Bessie Vandervort; and paternal grandparents, Otto and Irena Mockry.

Survivors include his wife, Julie Ann Mockry of McCook; his son, Jamie Mockry and wife, Theresa, of McCook; daughters, Cynthia “Cyndi” and husband, Jesse Carlisle, Caitlyn Mockry, and Colette and husband, Travis Balderston, all of McCook and Stacey Brown of Kearney; parents, Orville and Donna Mockry of McCook; two brothers, Randy Mockry and wife, Wanda and Robert Mockry and wife, Angela, all of McCook; two sisters, Nancy and husband, Charlie Collins and Mary Sue and husband, Bob Wurster, all of McCook; ten grandchildren, Desarae, Ashlyn and Rylie Balderston; Lane and Kylee Brown; Joslyn Rivera; Aaron, Anita and James Mockry and Callie Carlisle; numerous nieces, nephews, family and a host of friends.

Memorials were to be given in his name.

Funeral services were Friday, November 2, 2007, 10:30 a.m. at the Kiplinger Arena in McCook with Pastor Eddie Wright officiating. Burial took place in Riverview cemetery.

Dorothy M. (Wallace) Minary

Dorothy M. Minary died Thursday, January 18, 2007 at McCook Community Hospital. She was 79.

Dorothy was born May 26, 1927 to John P. and Lillie M. (Clark) Wallace in Cambridge. She attended McCook Public Schools.

She married Percy L. Minary in Oberlin, Kansas on October 30, 1942. To this union seven children were born. Her hobbies were cooking and reading. She enjoyed her family.

She was a member of the Eagles and Royal Neighbors.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Percy (July 10, 1985); two granddaughters, Debbie and Cindy Minary and an infant grandson and infant granddaughter; one great-grandson, Shane Michael Miller; three brothers, Tom Wallace, Gary Wallace, Alfred Wallace; and two sisters, Helen Shepherd, and Edna Judd.

She is survived by her sons, Kenneth Minary and wife, Florence of Culbertson, Roger Minary and life-long companion, Karen Christiansen of North Platte, Gayle Minary of Culbertson and Doug Minary and wife, Dawn, of McCook; daughters, Barbara Masur of McCook, Maxine Lingeman and husband, Tom of North Platte and Gloria Wortman-Gonzales and husband, Paul of Greeley, CO; two brothers, John Wallace of McCook and Richard Wallace and wife, Mary Lou of Loveland, CO; 23 grandchildren and 34 great-grandchildren.

Memorials were to be given in her name to the Eagles Auxillary.

Funeral services were on Monday, January 22, 2007 at 11:00 a.m. at Carpenter Breland Chapel with Pastor Steve Bales officiating. Burial took place in the Culbertson cemetery.
