Lena V. (Tucker) Mihm

Lena V. Mihm, 91 of Palisade died Friday, November 23, 2007 at Community Hospital in McCook.

Lena was born on the 21st day of May, 1916 in Harrison County, Missouri to Sanford Ramer and Zella H. (Ballard) Tucker. The Tucker family moved to southwest Nebraska when she was a young child and she attended school in Hayes Center.

She married Elmer L. Nickerson in North Platte on December 31, 1935. A son, James Sanford, was born to this union in June of 1952, but died in infancy. Two daughters, Donna and Carole, completed this family circle. Elmer passed away in 1977. She married Harold Mihm in Trenton on April 21, 1981 and they resided in Palisade.

Lena’s highest priority was her family, especially her four grandsons. She was well known for her expertise in quilting and spent many happy Mondays quilting with her friends in Hayes Center. She also enjoyed playing cards and in earlier years tending her garden and canning. She was a member of the United Church of Christ Congregational Church in Hayes Center, the American Legion Auxiliary, Women’s Fellowship and the Jolly Farmerette Club of Wallace.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Elmer; infant son, James Sanford; two brothers, Delbert D. Tucker and Darryl Lee Tucker; two sisters, Helen Cotton and Mildred Beck.

Survivors include: her husband Harold of Wauneta; two daughters, Donna Price and husband Dan of Manitou Springs, Colorado and Carole Patterson of Boise, Idaho; four grandsons, David & Doug Price and Matthew & Christopher Patterson; two sisters, Thelma Walter and husband Richard of McCook and Wilma Witman of Greeley, Colorado and a sister-in-law, Louise Tucker of McCook.

Memorials were to be given to the United Church of Christ Congregational Church of Hayes Center.

Funeral services took place Saturday, December 1, 2007, 1:30 p.m. at Carpenter Breland Chapel with Pastor Fay Ann Blaylock officiating. Burial took place in Riverview cemetery.

Virgil Dwight McMahan

Virgil “Bill” Dwight McMahan died Saturday, January 27, 2007, at The Villages, FL. He was 80 years old.

Bill was born on November 17, 1926 at McCook to Joseph and Belva (Rowland) McMahan. He graduated from McCook High School in 1944.

He married Elgin LaVerne “Jean” Brooks on March 29, 1955 at McCook. Together they raised two daughters. They made their home in McCook where Bill was employed with the Nebraska Public Power District.

He entered the US Army on January 20, 1946 and then transferred to the US Air Force and served during World War II. He was honorably discharged after faithfully serving his country.

Preceding him in death were his parents, Joseph and Belva McMahan.

Survivors include his wife, Jean; daughters, Tamrah McCarville and Tolana Kersey; sister, Jean Brenning; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren and two nephews.

In lieu of flowers memorials were to be given to the American Cancer Society.

Funeral services were held on Friday, February 2, 2007, 2:00 p.m. at Carpenter Breland Chapel with the Rev. Dr. Jeff Thurman officiating. Burial took place in Memorial Park cemetery.

Robert E. McLaren

Robert “Bob” E. McLaren died Thursday, September 27, 2007 at Community Hospital in McCook. He was 73 years old.

Bob was born on April 6, 1934 in Ballina, NSW Australia to James Patrick and Linda Edith (James) McLaren.

On March 13, 1965 he married Dorothy L. Nelson at Ballina, Australia. They made their home in Australia where Bob was a master ship builder and carpenter. They moved to the McCook community in 1983. Bob worked various jobs while living in McCook.

Bob’s hobbies included putting model kits of ships, airplanes and guns together, gardening and cooking. He also enjoyed spending time with his family.

Preceding him in death were his parents, James and Linda McLaren; and two brothers, Gorden and Terrance McLaren.

Survivors include his wife, Dorothy McLaren of McCook; son, Lynn McLaren and partner, Don Hooper, of Denver, CO; daughter, Rosie and husband, Scott Rose, of Kasson, MN; courtesy daughter, Bonnie and husband, Mike Brown, of McCook; two sisters, Judith and husband, Sidney Howarth and Robyn and husband, Ray Gough, all of Australia; and five grandchildren, Edward, Alex, Cooper Rose, Sydney and husband, Randy Bauman and Lyndsay McLaren.

Memorials were to be given in his name.

Memorial services took place on Monday, October 1, 2007, 10:30 a.m. at Memorial United Methodist Church with the Rev. Dr. Jeff Thurman officiating.

Norma Mae (Hagemann) McKee

Norma M. (Hagemann) McKee died Monday, March 5, 2007 at her rural Culbertson home. She was 73 years old.

Norma was born on February 13, 1934, at Culbertson to William F. and Pauline (Bauer) Hagemann. She graduated from Culbertson High School in 1952. She worked for Hinky Dinky and Nebraska Department of Roads during High School and after graduation. She moved to California and was employed by Ryan Aircraft for 35 years.

Norma was united in marriage to John Eugene McKee On September 28, 1958 at San Diego, CA. Together they were owners and operators of the Daniel Boone (distilled spirits) Company, Genie Car Wash, and two card rooms known as Norma’s Card Room and John’s card room. They had season tickets to the San Diego Chargers Football games.

She returned to Culbertson in 2004 to help her mother on the farm. She was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church while in San Diego and St. John’s in Culbertson. She enjoyed playing pinochle and pitch with friends and family.

Preceding her in death were her father, William Hagemann on February 27, 1988; her husband, John on May 30, 1998; and brother, Robert in May 1, 1969.

Survivors include her mother, Pauline Hagemann of Culbertson; sister, Shirley Sitzman of Liberty, MO; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Memorials may be given in her name.

A funeral service was held Friday, March 9, 2007, 11:00 a.m. at Culbertson St. John’s Lutheran Church. Pastor Brad Rick officiated the service. Burial was in the Culbertson cemetery.

Kenneth Henry McGuire

Kenneth Henry McGuire, age 95, died Wednesday, July 11, 2007 at Hillcrest Nursing Home.

He was born March 29, 1912 to Joseph Walters and Kathryn (Reiners) McGuire in McCook.

He married Doris Hawkins and to this union two children were born, Ken and Judy.

He married Jean L. Hutto in Wray, CO on June 19, 1952.

He worked for Burlington Northern Railroad as an engineer, he was also a farmer, and he enjoyed hunting, fishing and after he retired, he became an avid golfer.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Kathryn; his wife, Jean, and two brothers, Carl and Burdette.

He is survived by his son, Ken McGuire and wife, Fern of Cloudcroft, NM; daughter, Judy Gaines and husband, Verlyn of Bakersfield, CA; and six grandchildren.

Memorials may be given in his name.

Graveside inurnment services were at Calvary cemetery on Thursday, July 19, 2007 with Father Gary Brethour officiating.

Jackilyn (Grant) McCarter

Jackilyn ‘Jackie’ McCarter, of McCook, died at Community Hospital in McCook on January 4, 2007 at the age of 63.

Jackie was born April 24, 1943 to Thomas and Georgina (Fyrer) Grant in Ontario, Canada.

Jackie and her first husband, Harold ‘Bud’ Hunter, eventually settled in Lexington, where Jackie was a dispatcher for the Lexington Police Department for 15 years.

Jackie and here second husband, Charles ‘Vern’ McCarter, worked in motel management for over 20 years in various states, most recently in Grand Junction, Colorado. Both retired from the motel business and pursued other opportunities, Jackie became a certified nursing assistant and Vern went to work for the U.S. Forest Service as a seasonal maintenance worker.

Jackie and Vern moved to McCook in May 2005 to be closer to family. Jackie worked as a part-time CNA at Hillcrest Nursing Home. She loved working and caring for the residents.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Thomas Grant Sr. and Georgina Grant; sister, Susan Grant; and ex-husband Bud Hunter.

She is survived by her husband, Vern McCarter of McCook; daughter, Dawn Marin and husband, Jesus of Carroll, Iowa; son, Gerry Hunter and wife, Deann of McCook; two brothers, Thomas Grant Jr. and wife, Ida Mae and Kevin Lee Grant of Canada; one sister, Peggy Fecteau of Canada; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews in Canada.

Memorials may be given in her name.

Jackie wished to be cremated. A graveside memorial service was held April 24, 2007 at 10:00 a.m. at the Evergreen cemetery in Lexington.

SGT Randy Jay Matheny

SGT Randy Jay Matheny, 20, died Sunday February 4th, 2007 near Baghdad, Iraq. He was killed by a roadside bomb while serving his country.

Randy was born on June 9, 1986 in Oberlin, Kansas and lived in McCook, Nebraska his entire life. He graduated from McCook High School in 2004.

He joined the Nebraska National Guard March 28, 2005 and went to basic training in October 2005 at Fort Jackson, South Carolina. His unit, the 1074th Transportation Company of Sidney, Nebraska, was called to serve at Camp Al Taqaddum, Iraq in October 2006.

Randy loved all types of music, riding his motorcycle, and driving his Cadillac. His greatest joy was spending time with his friends and being with his family.

He was preceded in death by his grandfathers, Cecil Matheny and Joe Alexander.

Randy is survived by his parents; father, Gary Matheny and fiancée, Kay Chambers, of Oberlin, Kansas; mother, Jan Collins and husband, Duane Collins of McCook; his fiancée, Courteney Gibson, of McCook; brother, Paul and wife, Christine Matheny, stationed at Ft. Riley, Kansas; sisters, Karen Matheny, currently stationed at Camp Anaconda, Iraq, Laci and husband Jason Ingels, of McCook, and Kori Collins and boyfriend, Zach Randolph, of Omaha; grandparents, Freida Matheny of Oberlin, Kansas, Myrna and Larry Lacina of Westminster, Colorado, Margot Alexander of Broomfield, Colorado; great-grandmother, Hazel Flaska of Oberlin, Kansas; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins. Randy is also survived by many life-long friends that are too numerous to mention.

Memorials were to be given in his name.

Funeral services were Friday 2 p.m. at the McCook City Auditorium with CH (COL) Rod Armon officiating. A full Military Honor Committal followed at Memorial Park cemetery.

Donald Wayne Marvin

Donald Wayne Marvin, 69, of McCook, passed away Wednesday, January 31, 2007 in Lincoln at Bryan LGH East. He was born March 15, 1937 in Fowler, CO to Lloyd and Emma (Glennemeir) Marvin. He graduated from Fowler High School in 1955. On February 14, 1960, Donald married Pat Soden in Rocky Ford, Colorado.

He entered active service in the U.S. Army in 1955 where he was in the Honor Guard in Washington, D.C. Don farmed in the Fowler area from 1960 to 1966. He completed his education at Northeastern Junior College in Sterling, CO in 1969. Don worked in the fertilizer industry for 24 years. He worked for Harris Serum & Supply/Cornbelt Chemical Company and Kugler Oil Company where he retired in 1994. In 1986, Don was the industry award winner recognized by the Nebraska Agri-Business Association. He was one of 12 dealers in the United States selected for the National Kalium Dealer Advisory Council. He was a member of the Board of Directors for the Nebraska Fertilizer Institute.

Don was a loving husband for 47 years, father of two sons, and grandpa to five grandchildren. Through the years as his sons grew up, he never missed any opportunities to support his boys. Recently he followed his grandchildren in all their endeavors and loved every minute of it. Don enjoyed life in many ways, he enjoyed; hunting, fishing, gardening, playing golf and raising cattle. He never met a stranger and was genuinely interested in every person he talked to.

Don was a member of the United Methodist Church for more than 50 years and served on various boards during that time. He also was a member of the Elks Lodge 1434 for 28 years.

He is survived by his wife, Pat; sons and daughters-in-law, Dwayne and Kim Marvin of Lincoln and Dr. Kenneth and Tami Marvin of Crete; grandchildren, Elyse and Jacob of Lincoln, Chelsee, Micah and Mitchell of Crete; brother and sister-in-law, Doyle and Evelyn Marvin of Fowler, CO; sisters, Eva Lundy and Anna Jean Green of Fowler, Wanda Chappell of Corneluis, OR, Ula Schultzs and husband, Harold, of Castro Valley, CA, Ruth Jordan and husband, Tony, of San Leandro, CA and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers-in-law, Ray Lundy, Bud Chappell and HerbGreen.

Pallbearers are grandsons, Jacob, Micah, Mitchell, friend Dave Ehmann, brother-in-law, Ron Soden and nephew, Kris Soden. Honorary pallbearers are Ken Foster, Willie Staley, Dale Poore, Darwin Pierson, Pete Dillan, Dr. Bill Graves and Galyn Nichols.

In lieu of flowers an educational scholarship has been established in his name.

Services were Monday, February 5, 2005, 10:30 a.m., at Memorial United Methodist Church in McCook with the Rev. Dr. Jeff Thurman officiating. Burial was in Memorial Park cemetery.
