Nancy Jo (Allen) Martinez

Nancy Jo Martinez, age 55, died Monday, August 27, 2007 at McCook Community Hospital.

She was born in Concordia, Kansas on April 16, 1952 to Sidney C. and Joan R. (Charbonneau) Allen. She graduated from St. Patrick’s Catholic School and attended McCook Senior High.

She married Ramon Martinez on July 19, 1974 in McCook.

She enjoyed her family, especially her grandchildren, she also enjoyed games on the computer.

She was preceded in death by a niece and nephew.

She is survived by her son, Jose Martinez and wife, Kathy of North Platte; daughter, Jennifer Martinez and fiancé Stephen Peterson, both of McCook; parents, Sid and Judy Allen of McCook; brothers, Robert Allen of Culbertson, Patrick Allen and wife Diane of Herndon, KS, Michael Allen and wife, Brenda of McCook; sisters, Sherrill Thayer, Lynn Carfield and husband, Vony, Victoria Lampman, and Sandy Schwab and special friend, Randy Ramsdell, all of McCook.

Memorials were to be given in her name to the American Lung Association.

Rosary was Wednesday, August 29, 2007 at Carpenter Breland Funeral Home.

Mass of Christian Burial took place Thursday, August 30, 2007 10:00 a.m. at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church with Father Gary Brethour officiating.

Carpenter Breland Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Jean Ann (Schnoor) Marshall

Jean Ann Marshall died August 8, 2007 at St. Anthony’s Central Hospital in Denver after a brief illness. She was 63 years old.

Jean was born on August 4, 1944 in Estelline, South Dakota to Malvin H. and Helen R. (Appel) Schnoor. She graduated from Watertown, South Dakota High School in 1962. She later returned to school and graduated from the University of Nebraska at Kearney in 1978 with a degree in Speech Pathology.

Jean was married to William “Bill” H. Marshall on August 9, 1964 in Imperial. To this union two children were born. Jean was a speech pathologist for the Columbus Public School System, ESU 15 in Trenton and McCook Public Schools.

Jean was a member of Memorial United Methodist Church and P.E.O. Chapter X. She volunteered for the blood mobile and helped countless hours making costumes for the Southwest Nebraska Community Theatre. She loved to travel including trips to Alaska and Padre Island, Texas to name a few. She loved sewing, quilting, needlework, and most of all spending time with her grandchildren.

Preceding her in death were her parents, Malvin and Helen Schnoor.

Survivors include her husband, Bill Marshall of McCook; son, Bill Marshall of Phoenix, AZ; daughter, Dr. Monica and husband, Dr. Moses Shieh, of Erie, CO; sister, Elaine and husband, Bob Jewell of Santa Barbara, CA; five grandchildren, Daniel, Melvin and Mary Marshall of Kearney and Marshall and Maxton Shieh of Erie, CO; numerous nephews, nieces, cousins and a host of friends.

Memorials were to be given to the Jean Marshall Scholarship Fund. It will be an annual scholarship that will be awarded to a graduate student entering speech pathology at the University of Nebraska at Kearney.

A memorial service took place on Saturday, August 18, 2007, 11:00 a.m. at Memorial United Methodist Church with the Rev. Dr. Jeff Thurman and the Rev. Dr. Douglas A. Delp officiating.

Floyd Alton Marks

Floyd Alton “Ton” Marks, age 66, died Tuesday, January 30, 2007 at his home south of Culbertson.

Alton was born November 25, 1940 to Floyd A. and Flora L. (Osborn) Marks at Trenton, Nebraska.

On February 3, 1963 he married Alice Eileen Clary at the Church of God in McCook. To this union two sons born.

He had worked for the Co-Op in Culbertson, for Kuglers for a while and also had driven a fertilizer truck for UAP. He loved hunting.

He was preceded in death by his parents and grandparents; a brother, Dale Marks; nephew, Russell Daugherty; brother-in-law, Arthur Stock; father-in-law and mother-in-law Charlie and Martha Clary.

He is survived by his wife, Alice of Culbertson; two sons, David Marks and wife Amy of Colby, Kans. And Larry Marks of Culbertson; three brothers, Arthur Marks of Culbertson, Russell Marks and wife Lavena of Trenton and Willard Marks and wife Janette Marks of McCook; two sisters, Doris Daugherty and husband Don of Trenton and Dixie Stock of McCook.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be given in his name.

A funeral service was held on Saturday, February 3, 2007 at 2 p.m. with Johnny Walker officiating. Burial was at Grove cemetery, south of Culbertson.

Roy L Seybold

Roy L Seybold, 45, of McCook passed away on December 2, 2007 at Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney.

Roy was born on January 7, 1962 in McCook to Ron and Donna (McKernan) Seybold. He attended school in McCook. Roy married Kathy Mains on May 19, 1980 in Oberlin, Kansas. To this union, three children were born.

Roy was employed by Southwest Implement, Cornbelt Chemical, Seaboard Grain, G & R Farms, G & A Farms, Major Transport and Rick Ruggles. At the time of his death, Roy was self-employed as a truck driver. Roy’s love of driving truck and hauling cattle was very evident in his daily life.

Survivors include his three sons Chris and wife Kati (Newtson) of Benkelman, Michael and wife Lisa (Lindquist) of Grand Island and Mark of McCook, his mother Donna of McCook, his sister Reba and husband Bruce Solko of North Platte, his grandmother Elaine Potts of Cambridge, six grandchildren, one niece, two nephews, a great-nephew and several aunts and uncles.

Roy was preceded in death by his father, Ron Seybold, and his grandparents, Fred Seybold, Daisy (Applebee) Seybold and Ellen (Frakes) Seybold.

A memorial was established in his name. Condolences were to be sent to the family at PO Box 7, Benkelman, NE 69021.

Funeral services were at 1:00 p.m. on Friday at Carpenter Breland Funeral Home in McCook. Burial took place at the Trenton cemetery.

Douglas D. Schlegel

Douglas D. Schlegel, age 56, died Sunday May 6, 2007, at McCook Community Hospital.

He was born in McCook on October 4, 1950 to Darold and Marjorie (Covert) Schlegel.

He graduated from McCook High School in 1969, University of Nebraska at Lincoln in 1973 with a degree in Agriculture.

He married Deborah Krieger in McCook on June 21, 1970. To this union two children were born.

Doug graduated from auctioneer school in Missouri in March of 1996. He was an auctioneer for charities, Rodeo Queen fund raising and estate auctions. He worked for Caldwell-Banker as a Farm and Ranch Specialist. He loved his family and his grandchildren held a special place in his heart. He especially enjoyed gardening and working in the yard. In every situation he continued to have a great sense of humor.

He was a member of the Culbertson United Methodist Church.

He was preceded in death by his father, Darold; and his grandfather, Willard.

He is survived by his son, Tanner Schlegel and wife, Jessica of McCook; daughter, Lisa Brown and husband, Troy of Gering; three grandchildren, Josie, Jessica & Haylee; mother, Marjorie Schlegel of Culbertson; grandmother, Helen Schlegel of McCook; brothers, Michael Schlegel and wife, Carol of Culbertson, Tim Schlegel and wife, Kathy of Centerton, Arkansas; sister, Kristi Schlegel of Aiken, South Carolina; and friend and companion, Dannette Miller.

Memorials may be given in his name.

Funeral services were Wednesday, May 9, 2007 at 10:30 a.m. at Carpenter Breland Funeral Chapel with Jerry Beckenhauer officiating. Burial was in the Culbertson cemetery.

Steven Alan Schellhase

Steven Alan Schellhase died Wednesday, June 13, 2007 at the VA Hospital in Omaha. He was 51 years old.

Steven was born on December 31, 1955 in Omaha to Alan B. and Patricia A. Bowers (Paine) Schellhase. He attended R-3 Phelps County Schools and graduated from Overton High School.

In May of 1974, he joined the US Coast Guard. He was honorably discharged in June of 1981 and has been a disabled veteran since that time.

On July 27, 1981, he married Anita Quismundo in Tacoma, Washington. He lived in Williamsburg Township on the family farm, various Coast Guard bases and Tacoma before moving back to Indianola in 1993 where he was living at the time of his death.

Steven worked as a computer tech for Data Tech in Federal Way, WA. He was also a truck driver for Ag-Valley CO-OP in Indianola and worked as a farm hand. His hobbies included antique tractors, cars and trucks and going to tractor pulls.

Preceding him in death were his father, Alan Schellhase; step-father, Don E. Bowers; maternal grandparents, G.C. and Vonda Paine; paternal grandparents, Ray and Irene Schellhase; and step-grandmother, Margie Paine.

Survivors include his wife, Anita Schellhase of Indianola; daughter, Stephanie E.P. Schellhase of Indianola; mother, Patricia A. Bowers of Indianola; two step-sisters, Denise and husband, Louie Chavez of Trona, CA and Linda and husband, Don Morosic of Kearney; two great-aunts, nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of friends.

Memorials may be given in his name.

A memorial service was held Tuesday, June 19, 2007, at the Indianola United Methodist Church with Rev. David Rowe officiating. Inurnment took place in the Indianola cemetery with a military committal.

Lillian P. (Ladd) Schaffert

Lillian P. Schaffert of Indianola, died Wednesday, November 28, 2007 at Community Hospital in McCook. She was 87 years old.

On May 18, 1920 she was born at Zalma, Missouri to James and Nellie (Umfleet) Ladd. She attended Ladd School dist. 78, thru the 8th grade. She enjoyed working out doors on their family farm helping her dad and brothers.

In June 1936 she married Forrest W. Pickett. To this union three children were born Lylis, Wendell and son Jerrell. They moved to Nebraska in 1944 and she supported her family by cooking in a café. She loved her family and gardening canning and baking pies was her speciality.

When her children were raised she worked as a bookkeeper for Merlin Kenfield many years and also served as a waitress at the Elks Club. Lillian married Ervin Schaffert at St. John Lutheran Church February 18, 1971.

Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband Forrest; a daughter, Lylis Dawn Emrich; a son, Jerrell; three brothers, Charlie, Lowell and Marcus; two half brothers, Willie and Elmer and three half sisters, Opal, Nina and Esther.

Survivors include her husband Ervin; daughter, Wendy Reiners and husband, Jim of Indianola, step-daughters Sharon L. Holst and husband, Larry of Independence, Missouri and Marcia Yannacito and husband, Mick of Arvada, Colorado; son-in-law, Frank Emrich and wife, Linda of Casa Grande, Arizona; daughter-in-law Thelma Pickett of Wessington, South Dakota; sister, Goldie Pickett and two sisters-in-law of Advance, Missouri; 11 grandchildren; 8 step grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren and 9 step-great grandchildren.

Memorial services were Saturday at 3:00 p.m. at St. John’s Lutheran Church with Pastor Kevin Schnakenberg officiating.

In lieu of flowers memorials were to be given to KNGN Radio Station or to the donors choice.

Mark Albert Schaaf

Mark Albert Schaaf died Wednesday, September 19, 2007 at Community Hospital in McCook, NE. He was 92 years old.

Mark was born on November 22, 1914 at Columbus, NE to Albert Jacob and Rose (Vanderheiden) Schaaf. He graduated from Kearney High School in 1933. He continued his education at Alexian Brothers in Chicago, IL graduating with a Registered Nurse Anesthetist Degree.

Mark entered the US Navy on November 2, 1942. He was honorably discharged on August 7, 1952 serving during World War II and the Korean Conflict. He continued to serve in the Reserves.

Mark met Freda Sarah Hutchings while he was stationed in England. They were married on February 6, 1950 in McCook. To this union four children were born. They lived in McCook until 1967 at which time they moved to Gallup, NM. Mark was employed as a nurse anesthetist for many years. He retired in 1987. After Freda’s death in 1993, Mark returned to McCook one year later.

Mark was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church and Fourth Degree Knight’s of Columbus. His church, family and friends were very important to him and he loved socializing with people. He loved going to his farm and spending time with his many animals and gardening.

Preceding him in death were his parents, Albert and Rose Schaaf; one brother, Myron Schaaf; and two sisters, Angela Budig and Thelma Meyer.

Survivors include his two sons, John Schaaf and wife, Suzanne, of Rio Rancho, NM and Michael Schaaf of Gallup, NM; two daughters, Hendrika and husband, Richard Winn, of Albuquerque, NM and Sarah Schaaf of McCook; two sisters, Rita Woods of Kearney, NE and Mary Forgue of McCook; four grandchildren, Elizabeth (James) Baumgardner, Michelle (Troy) Fulgham, David Schaaf and Angelica (Kevin) Rayl; and nine great-grandchildren.

Memorials were to be given in his name.

Rosary took place Friday, September 21, 2007, at Carpenter Breland Chapel.

Mass of Christian Burial was Saturday, September 22, 2007, 10:30 a.m. at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church with Father Gary Brethour officiating.

A private family inurnment was held Monday at Calvary cemetery.

Joyce I. (Pollmann) Samuelson

Joyce I. Samuelson, 55, of McCook died Sunday, May 6, 2007 at Community Hospital in McCook.

She was born, October 7, 1951 in McCook to John C. and Louise (Creighton) Pollmann.

She graduated from Culbertson High School in 1968 and from McCook Community College in 1970.

On June 23, 1989, she married Doug Samuelson in McCook.

Joyce was a member of the First Congregational Church. She worked as a bookkeeper for 12 years for D&S; Hardware and for Perry Grain Elevator. She also worked for IPB Meat Packing Company for eight & a half years, and for Republican Valley Schools as a custodian and at Valmont Irrigation where she was presently employed.

She loved her family, grandchildren, peacocks, pheasants, gardening, fishing, camping, and spending time with her husband and being at home.

She was preceded in death by her father, John.

Survivors include her husband Doug of McCook; her children, Robert Samuelson and wife, Becky of Omaha, Thomasine Moore and husband, Dave of Columbus, Doug Samuelson Jr. and wife, Carrie of Columbus, Harry Samuelson of Norfolk, Virginia Samuelson of Omaha; her mother, Louise Pollmann of McCook; brothers, Larry Pollmann and wife, Diane of McCook, Jarry Pollman and wife, Valorie of McCook and Loren Pollmann and wife, Margaret of Trenton; two sisters, Judy Redmer and husband, Lynn of Garden Plain, Kansas and Linda Hilker and husband, Roland of McCook; and seven grandchildren.

Funeral Services were Friday May 11, 2007 at 1:30 p.m. at First Congregational Church in McCook with Pastor Phil Ewert and Pastor Steve Bales officiating. Burial was in Garden Prairie cemetery.

Memorials may be given in her name.
