Bessie (Newbrough) Pickel

Bessie Pickel passed peacefully away April 18, 2007 at the Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice in Wichita, Kansas. She was born in March 28, 1910 at Neligh to Samuel and Lena Newbrough. She was 97 years old.

She is survived by two daughters, Evelyn Staudenmaier and husband, George of Harrison, Nebraska, Bonnie Johnson and husband, Jay of Wichita, Kansas; one son, Donald Knotts of Channelview, Texas; six grandchildren and wives, Greg and Kathy Knotts, Bradley and Sandy Knotts, Art Gallington, Cliff and Wendy Gallington, Dave and Trina Gallington, Travis Johnson; eight great-grandchildren, Andy, Emily, Courtney Gallington, Isabella Micheal, Ryan, Alan, and Austin Knotts; great-great-grandchildren, Addison, Caleb, Kara, Logan and Anthony Knotts.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Samuel and Lena Newbrough; two husbands, Thomas Knotts and Alva Pickel; one granddaughter-in-law, Carrie Gallington; and all 7 of her brothers and sisters.

Graveside services are planned for May 25th, 2007, 10:00 a.m. at the Sutherland cemetery, with Jerry Beckenhauer officiating.

Carpenter Breland Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Eva E. (Follett) Pezza

Eva E. Pezza, age 84, died Sunday, June 17, 2007 at the Heritage of Wauneta.

Eva was born in Palisade on April 14, 1923 to Floyd and Anna (Dudek) Follett. She graduated from Palisade High School.

She married Frank Pezza in McCook on October 2, 1944. To this union one daughter was born.

She was a member of the Palisade United Methodist Church, the Dizzy Dolls Club and the American Legion Auxillary. She enjoyed sewing and knitting.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Floyd and Anna; husband, Frank on November 3, 2000; brothers, Don and Ralph Follett; one sister, Shirley Grabast.

She is survived by her daughter, Annamarie Pezza; and sister, Mary Post both of Palisade.

Memorials may be given in her name.

Memorial services were Wednesday, June 20, 2007 at the Palisade cemetery, with Rev. Judy Dye officiating.

Patronellie H. (Peterson) Silver

Patronellie “Nellie” H. Silver died Tuesday, August 28, 2007 at Hillcrest Nursing Home in McCook. She was 92 years old.

Nellie was born on December 10, 1914 at Gresham, Nebraska to Richard and Helena (Neujhar) Peterson. She was baptized in December of 1914.

Her family moved to southwest Nebraska when Nellie was a small child. She attended St. Paul’s Parochial School south of Wauneta. She was confirmed in June of 1928 at Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church in Palisade.

On January 10, 1937 she married Truman “Bud” A. Silver in Palisade. To this union two daughters were born. They made their home on a farm near Palisade where Nellie was an intricate part of the farming and a homemaker. In 1974, they built a new home in Palisade and moved off the farm. They later moved to Culbertson for a brief time before moving to Willow Ridge Retirement Community in McCook. Nellie was residing at Hillcrest Nursing Home at the time of her death.

Nellie was a member of Palisade Trinity Lutheran Church and Ladies Aid. She served as a Sunday school teacher and organist for many years. She enjoyed gardening, sewing and crafts. She and her husband enjoyed fishing and going south to Arizona and Texas for the winter months.

Preceding her in death were her parents, Richard and Helena Peterson; two sisters, Martha Damrow and Louise Schulenburg; and three brothers, George, Edwin and Paul Peterson.

Survivors include her husband of over 70 years, Bud Silver of McCook; two daughters, Lois and husband, Loren Brown, of McCook and Doris and husband, Richard Weaver, of Biloxi, Miss; two grandchildren, Lorna and husband, Gary of Oshkosh, Lyle and wife, Jackie of Palisade; two step-grandchildren, Dan and Amy; three great-grandchildren, Bryan, Myrah and Whitney and numerous nieces and nephews..

Memorials were to be given in her name.

Funeral services were Friday, August 31, 2007, 2:00 p.m. at Peace Lutheran Church in McCook with Pastor Greg Stuckwisch officiating. Burial took place in the Palisade cemetery.

Lois M. (McNeill) Sines

Lois M. Sines died Tuesday, September 11, 2007 at Community Hospital in McCook. She was 84 years old.

Lois was born on August 6, 1923 in Indianola, to John and Alta (Helm) McNeill. She graduated from Indianola High School in 1941 and attended McCook Jr. College.

On November 8, 1944, she married John C. Sines at Norton, Kansas. To this union three sons were born. They made their home in McCook where Lois was a homemaker. She also taught school for three years and was a magazine and book distributor for 16 years. She worked at the Army Air Base during World War II in the supply department.

Lois was a member of Memorial United Methodist Church and was also a sponsor of Methodist Youth Fellowship. She was a past member of the McCook Drove #3 BPO DOES and was a den mother for the scouting program for four years.

Preceding her in death were her parents, John and Alta McNeill; two sisters, Marcella Luther, Roberta Carter; three brothers, Lawrence and Willard McNeill and one brother in infancy.

Survivors include her husband of almost 63 years, John Sines of McCook; three sons, Michael Sines and wife, Ann, of Pierre, SD, Gary Sines and wife, Janice, of Jefferson City, MO and Steven Sines and wife, Deborah, of McCook; four grandsons, four grand-daughters and seven great-grandchildren; numerous relatives and a host of friends.

Memorials were to be given in her name.

Funeral services were Friday, September 14, 2007 at 11:00 a.m. at Memorial United Methodist Church with the Rev. Dr. Jeff Thurman officiating. Burial took place in Memorial Park cemetery.

Danny R. Sines

Danny R. Sines, 56 of McCook, died Sunday March 18, 2007 at Community Hospital in McCook.

He was born in McCook to Virgil E. and Edith (Dawson) Sines on September 23, 1950. He graduated from McCook High School in 1969.

He married Carolyn Meixner on June 23, 1995 at the First Assembly of God Church in McCook. He worked at Valmont for 5 years, he also worked for Outdoor Sports Gun Shop, and United Supplies. His hobbies included guns, hunting, and fishing. He collected hot wheel cars.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Edith; and brother, Gene.

He is survived by his wife, Carolyn of McCook; his father, Virgil Sines of Cambridge; step-son, Dennis Mizell and wife, Sareth of Shreveport, Texas; step-daughter, Christy Lesher and husband, Scott of Grand Island; step brother, Lawrence “Sonny” Cochran of Tucumcari, New Mexico; step-grandchildren, Casey Lesher, Jessica Mizell, Andrew Mizell.

Memorials may be given in his name.

Funeral services were Friday, March 23, 2007 at 11:00 a.m. at the First Assembly of God with Pastor Eddie Wright officiating. Burial was at Memorial Park cemetery.

Mable F. (Leonard) Skuldt

Mable F. (Leonard) Skuldt died Thursday, March 15, 2007 in McCook at Hillcrest Nursing Home. She was 67 years old.

Mable was born on October 20, 1939 in Berthoud, Colorado to Thomas Earl and Mildred (Cronn) Leonard.

Her grandchildren and great-grandchildren were the joy of her life. Mable devoted her life to them and helped raise three with her son.

She lived in Madison, WI for 18 years but spent most of her life in the McCook area. Mable was a sweet woman with a big heart and will be missed by all that loved her.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond Skuldt; her parents; four sisters, Joann Davis, Doris Santiago, Twila Hand and Wanda Leonard; two infant brothers; one step-son, Larry Skuldt; and granddaughter, Lacey Brunswick.

She is survived by four children, Betty and husband, Harold Booth, of Athens, AL, Bob Brunswick of McCook, Pamela and husband, Brian Wallace, of Orlando, FL and Deb and husband, Dennis Hall, of Salina, KS; two stepchildren, Linda and Bob Hahn of Cuba City, WI and Kenny Skuldt of Mazomanie, WI; 17 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by a sister Betty Nelson of McCook and one brother Dennis Leonard of Grand Island and many nieces and nephews.

Memorials may be given in her name.

Funeral services were Monday, March 19, 2007, 2:00 p.m. at Carpenter Breland Chapel with Jerry Beckenhauer officiating. Burial was in Memorial Park cemetery.

Lewis Barlett Snyder

Lewis Bartlett “Bart” Snyder of Oberlin, Kansas died Thursday, December 13, 2007 at Hillcrest Nursing Home in McCook, Nebraska. He was 67 years old.

Bart was born on November 18, 1940 in Grangeville, Idaho to Alvin William and Frances Eileen (Tourelle) Leist. As a young child he and his brother were adopted by Vern Snyder. He graduated from Walla Walla High School, Walla Walla, Washington, in 1958 and attended one year of college.

Bart worked for a number of grocery stores until the mid 1960’s. He returned to the family farm near Oberlin and was farming at the time of his death.

He was united in marriage to Mary “Annette” Lepper on January 13, 1984. He was a member of Prairie Chapel Methodist Church. He served on the Sherman Township Board and cemetery Board. He also served two terms on the Danbury Coop Board.

He loved spending time with his cattle, his dogs and most of all with his grandchildren.

Preceeding him in death was his father, Alvin; and daughter, Kim Atkinson.

Survivors include his wife, Annette of Oberlin, KS; daughters, Teresa Meitl of Kansas City, MO, Yvonne Salvarria and fiancé, Leo Johnson, of Queen Creek, AZ, Tami Ehrman of Blue Hill, NE and Linda and husband, Greg Parde, of McCook; sons, Mike Nicholson and wife, Melinda, of Moore, OK and Jeff Nicholson and wife, Marilea, of McCook; his mother, Eileen McClenny of Walla Walla; one brother, Dennis Snyder and wife, Carol, of Walla Walla; 15 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren; numerous family and a host of friends.

Memorials were to be given in his name.

Funeral services were Saturday, December 15, 2007, 11:00 a.m. at Carpenter Breland Chapel with Rev. Doug Hasty officiating. Burial took place in the Sherman cemetery, rural Oberlin, KS.

Gladys M. (Harned) Sterr

Gladys M. Sterr, 86, died Saturday, December 29, 2007 at the ManorCare Heath Services in Dubuque, IA.

She was born in Indianola to Omar H. and Grace (Hartley) Harned on August 20, 1921.

She married Leland D. Sterr on Aug. 16, 1948 in North Platte. He preceded her in death on Jan. 6, 1995.

Her hobbies included bowling, gardening and watching sports on ESPN. She especially loved watching PGA golf. While residing in Dubuque, Gladys made many friends at Cozy Corner Adult Day Care and Home Instead In-Home Care. She will be greatly remembered by her beautiful smile and her love for small children.

She was preceded in death by her parents; one sister, Lolita Harned Kerst, and two brothers, Gaylord and Dale Harned.

Survivors include her children, Donald Ruby and wife, Ruth Ann of Tahlequah, Okla. Lynda (Ruby) Bennett of Farmington Hills, Mich., Ronald Sterr and wife, Mari of Dubuque, Iowa with whom she had resided for the last two years, Debra (Sterr) Niemeier and husband, Robert of Omaha, sister-in-law, Mary Lou Harned of Tulsa, Okla.; eight grandchildren, Jessica (Sterr) Catrini and husband, Chris of Mahwah, NJ, Jacqueline (Sterr) Macaluso and husband, Fred of Naperville, IL, Jared L. Sterr of Arlington Heights, IL, Douglas Ruby and wife, Beth of Peidmont, OK, Stephanie (Ruby) Johnson and husband, Bryan of Arrow, OK, Nicole Bennett of Farmington Hills, MI, Johnny Bennett and wife, Meghan of Chicago, Illinois, Beth (Niemeier) MacLeod and husband, Jason of Lenexa, Kansas; 11 great-grandchildren, Christopher, Nicholas, Averey, Jillian, Luke, Matthew, Madeline, Sophia, Tyler, Brody and Alana; and several nieces and nephews.

Special thanks to Bob and Mariko Wilbricht and Mary Steines at Cozy Care for all their love and kindness thy extended to Gladys.

Funeral services took place Friday, January 4th, 10 a.m. at Carpenter Breland Funeral Home Chapel in McCook with Pastor Bruce Lester officiating.

Linda Sharlaine Stevens

Linda Sharlaine Stevens, age 61, died Monday, February 19, 2007 at her home in McCook.

Linda was born October 11, 1945 to Ronald and Lorraine Stevens in McCook. She grew up with her parents in Indianola and McCook.

Linda moved into S.W.A.T.S residence #2 in March 2000, where she joined the Swatters 4-H Club and entered in Special Olympics. In recent years she moved into residence #4 due to declining health. Linda loved to do word search puzzle books and go to the S.W.A.T.S workshop everyday. Linda never met a stranger, she was always glad to see everyone.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Lorraine Stevens on Dec. 14, 1997; her father, Ronald Stevens on March 25, 2005; several aunts, uncles and cousins.

She is survived by her brother, Todd Stevens of McCook; aunt Sharlaine Robarchek of Potwin, KS; cousins, Honey Lou and Darrell Bonor of Hastings, Donald and Beverly McDonald of Henderson, NV, Sharon Morrison of Whitefish, MT, Clayton and Carole Robarchek of Valley Center, KS, Doug Robarchek of Charlotte, NC, Jim, Jerry, Harold and Evelyn Jones of Denver, CO, Lois Jane Guertner of Olympia, WA; and a host of friends.

Memorials may be given in her name.

A funeral service was held on Thursday, February 22, 2007 1:30 p.m. at Carpenter Breland Funeral Chapel with Jerry Beckenhauer officiating. Burial was in the Indianola cemetery.

Lynn M. (Thayer) Thompson

Lynn M. Thompson, age 45, of Garden City, GA, formerly of McCook, died Thursday, September 6, 2007 in Savannah, GA.

Lynn was born on October 7, 1961, at Escondido, CA, to Robert and Catherine (Mulkey) Thayer. She graduated from McCook High School in 1979.

She married Keith Thompson in August of 1979. To this union four children were born. They lived in Sterling, KS, and Westcliffe, CO. The couple divorced in 1996.

Survivors include her parents, Robert and Catherine Thayer of McCook; two sons, Damon Keith Thompson of Kaneohe Bay, HA and Cory R. Thompson of Edwardsville, IL; two daughters, Trina Dawn and husband, Cory Andrew, of Kansas City, KS and Kelsey Marie Thompson of Pueblo West, CO; one brother, Robert Thayer and wife, Jody, of Escondido, CA; two sisters, Denise and husband, Jay Semensow and April Martin all of Escondido, CA; and five grandchildren, Halie, Cole, Trevor, Brandon and Alex; nieces and nephews, Elizabeth, Robby, Joey and Emily Thayer and Jayson, Justyn and Eryn Semensow; special friend, James Carter of Garden City; numerous relatives and a host of friends.

Memorials were to be given in her name.

Memorial services and celebration of her life was held at Carpenter Breland Chapel on Sunday, October 7, 2007, at 1:30 p.m. with her brother Robert Thayer officiating. A private family inurnment will take place at a later time.
