Bertha D. (Tongish) Unger

Bertha "Bert" D. Tongish Unger, 95, of Lakewood, Colorado, passed away on November 29, 2007 at the Villa Manor Nursing Home. She was born in Herndon, Kansas on September 10, 1912 to Andrew and Elizabeth (Hafner) Tongish. Bertha married Ed Unger April 19, 1934 at St. Mary's Church in Herndon, Kansas. The couple lived on a farm north of Herndon until 1967, when they moved to McCook, Nebraska where they both worked for Southwest Bell until 1990. They moved to Parrish Care Assisted living home in Yuma, Colorado in 2000. Bert was taken to Villa Manor Nursing Home, Lakewood, Colorado in December of 2005 after falling and breaking her hip.

The love of Bert's life was being a good mother, grandmother and a housewife while helping out on the farm and also helping Ed after they moved to McCook. Her fondest times were spending time with her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. She loved to swim weekly at the YMCA. She also loved to fish, play bingo, cards, playing her piano fun machine, and enjoyed flowers and birds. Bert worked as a volunteer at the McCook Hospital for many years. She was also a member of the Christian mothers at St. Mary's Church in Herndon and St. Patrick's Church in McCook.

Bert was preceded in death by her husband Ed, her parents Andrew and Elizabeth; one son, Kenneth; one granddaughter, Casey Jo Unger; two son-in-laws, Larry Barenberg and Jerry Wallman and twelve siblings, Mary O'Leary Lang, Elsie Tongish, Louella Bufman, Florence Westman, Herman Tongish, William Tongish, Andrew Tongish, Jr., Edward Tongish, Erwin Tongish, Clarence Tongish, RayTongish and Roy Tongish with her being the last of thirteen.

She is survived by three sons, Charles and wife, Eileen, of Herndon, Kansas; J.R. and wife, Carole, of Yuma, Colorado; Virgil and wife, Catherine, of Henderson, Nevada; one daughter, Shirley Barenberg of Lakewood, Colorado; one daughter-in-law, Roma Murdock and husband, Bmce, of Sierra Vista, Arizona; twenty-two grandchildren; thirty-two great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.

Rosary was Sunday evening at Carpenter Breland Funeral Home. Mass of Christian Burial took place at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church on Monday, December 3, 2007 at 1:00 p.m. Burial took place in Calvary cemetery.

Baucke Funeral Home of Yuma, Co and Carpenter Breland Funeral Home, McCook, Ne was in charge of arrangements.

Michael Richard Vigneur

Michael Richard Vigneur, age 67, died Thursday, June 28, 2007 at Cambridge Memorial Hospital.

He was born on October 24, 1939 to Wilfred and Bessie (Monru) Vigneur at Waltham, Massachusetts.

He entered the U.S. Air Force on June 18, 1959 and served with the 310th Transportation Squadron. On June 17, 1963 he was honorably discharged.

On December 31, 1959, he married Lois M. Strickland in Aurora, Colorado. They made their home in Colorado where Michael worked for Komac Paint Stores until 1986 when he had to retire due to medical reasons. He also drove a truck for the Scholastic Book Fair for three years. Besides raising their own children, he and his wife were foster parents for 27 years to 350 children.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Wilfred and Bessie Vigneur.

He is survived by his wife, Lois Vigneur of McCook; his four daughters, Debra and husband, Thomas Sell, Abbey Vigneur, Jennifer McQuistan all of McCook and Sarah and husband, Fermin Rocha, of Denver, CO; three sons, James Vigneur and wife, Kathy, of Thornton, CO, David Vigneur and wife, Kerri, of McCook and Nicholas Vigneur and wife, Tracy, of Fort Leonardwood, MO; one sister, Jeanne Barrker of Denver, CO; 13 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be given in his name.

Funeral services were Monday, July 2, 7:00 p.m. at Carpenter Breland Chapel with Pastor Jon Albrecht officiating. Burial took place Tuesday, July 3, 2007 at 10:00 a.m. at Fort McPherson National cemetery with Jerry Beckenhauer officiating.

Carpenter Breland Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Regan E. Vlasin

Regan “Reg” E. Vlasin of Hayes Center died Wednesday, September 5, 2007 at Community Hospital in McCook after a courageous battle with cancer. He was 45 years old.

Reg was born on September 5, 1962 at McCook to Joseph P. and Doris M. (Nelms) Vlasin. He graduated from Hayes Center High School in 1981. After his graduation he continued to live in Hayes County where he farmed and worked for the Hayes County Road Department until the time of his death.

Reg was a member of rural Sacred Heart Catholic Church. He was also a member of the Hayes Center Lions Club where he served as a past-president. He was instrumental in organizing the Grand Duke Alexis Rendezvous held in Hayes County since its beginning in 2000.

He enjoyed listening to country western music and spending time with his family and many friends.

Preceding him in death were his brother; David Vlasin; maternal grandfather, Vernie Nelms; and paternal grandparents, Joe and Rose Vlasin.

Survivors include his parents, Joseph and Doris Vlasin of Hayes Center; two brothers, Rick Vlasin of Champion and Randy Vlasin and wife, Donna, of Lincoln; maternal grandmother, Etta Nelms of Wauneta; niece, Lindsay; nephews, Jeremy, Matt, Adam and Tyler and a host of friends.

Memorials were to be given in his name to the Hayes County Lions Club or Hayes County Foundation.

Rosary took place Sunday, September 9, 2007, at Carpenter Breland Chapel with Mass of Christian Burial on Monday, September 10, 2007, 10:00 a.m. at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in McCook with Father Gary Brethour as celebrant. Burial in Sacred Heart cemetery rural Hayes Center.

Shyanne Destiny Waddell

Shyanne Destiny Waddell, infant daughter of Michael Paul and Rebecca Sue (Gilliam) Waddell of Bartley, was born at Methodist Hospital in Omaha on Thursday, September 20, 2007. She died later that same day at Children’s Hospital in Omaha.

Survivors include her parents Michael and Rebecca Waddell of Bartley; two sisters, TayLynn and Audra Waddell of Bartley; maternal grandparents, Brent and Lori Cobb of McCook and Earl “Butch” and Sherry Gilliam of Lincoln; paternal grandparents, Trudy and Jerry Burkholder of Bartley; great-grandparents, Kenneth and Janice Waddell of McCook, Joyce Gilliam of Crete, Jo Burkholder of Corsicana, TX, Doris Phillips of Sedona, AZ, Kenneth and Jean Kohlmann of Lincoln and Francis Shiree of Lincoln; great-great grandmother, Dorothy Eisenbarth of McCook; numerous aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.

Preceding her in death were her paternal grandfather, Timothy Waddell; great-grandparents, Lloyd and Delores Helberg, Earl Gilliam, Gerald Hietbrink, Royce Cobb and Robert Phillips; and great-great-grandparents, Florence Mercer, Fred and Edna Gilliam, Henry and Ada Hestermann and Dorman and Darlene Cobb.

Memorials were to be given in her name.

Funeral services were Tuesday, September 25, 2007, 10:30 a.m., at McCook Christian Church with Pastor Clark Bates officiating. Burial took place in Memorial Park cemetery.

Theresa Jean (Conroy) Walters

Theresa “Bead Lady” Walters of Danbury died Thursday, February 22, 2007 at her home. She was 49.

She was born April 2, 1957 to Thomas and Bertilla (Hickert) Conroy at McCook. She attended grade school at St. Patrick’s Catholic School and graduated from McCook High School in 1976.

She married Dennis Walters on April 16, 1977 in McCook. She was a cook in several restaurants as well as a homemaker. She enjoyed motorcycling, fishing, drawing, photography, arrowhead hunting, crafts, and her Norman Rockwell plate and picture collection. She loved to tell jokes and talk to everyone with a big smile. She never met a stranger.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Bertilla “Bert” (July 7, 2003); brother, Anthony “Tony” (April 19, 2004); grandparents, Laurence and Catherine (Kennedy) Conroy, and Al and Amanda (Gilleece) Hickert.

She is survived by her husband, Dennis; son, Ryan, both of Danbury; father, Thomas “Tom” Conroy of McCook; brother, Phil Conroy of Lincoln; sisters, Cindy Baumgartner of Edgewater, Colorado; Monica Conroy of McCook; Deb Leach and husband, Don of Danbury; Pam Herron and husband, John of McCook; sister-in-law, Beckey Conroy of Scottsbluff; numerous nieces and nephews; and a host of friends.

Memorials may be given in her name.

A funeral service was held on February, 26, 2007 at Carpenter Breland Funeral Chapel with Jerry Beckenhauer officiating. Burial was in the Danbury-Marion cemetery.

Charles Alfred Wegener

Charles Alfred Wegener, 89, passed away on Friday, January 19, 2007 in the Hillcrest Nursing Home in McCook, Nebraska. He was born on October 15, 1917 in Estavan, Canada to Anton C. and Clara Amanda (Lippman) Wegener.

At an early age Charles moved to North Dakota with his family where he received his early education. He graduated from Granville High School in Granville, North Dakota in the class of 1936. He then attended Minot State Teachers College for one year. Charles entered the U.S. Army on November 20, 1937 in Lincoln, North Dakota and separated on May 18, 1939. During his military service, he married Bertha Mary Teppo on March 3, 1939 in Bismarck, North Dakota.

During his career, Charles had worked in the Petroleum Industry, being Product Superintendent for the British-American Oil Company. He had also been employed as Chief and Field Inspector for the Nebraska Oil and Gas Commission for 19 years prior to retiring in 1980. During that time they lived in McCook.

Following retirement Charles and family moved to Bigfork, Montana were he was a member of the Bigfork Methodist Church and enjoyed his retirement. He had lived in McCook, Nebraska for the past 15 years.

Charles was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Bertha in 1990, and one son: Wayne.

He is survived by a daughter: Karen Miller & husband Ray of McCook, NE; a son: Ronald Wegener & wife Sherry of Klamath Falls, OR; a son: James Wegener & wife Patty of Kalispell, MT and his adopted grandchildren: Donald Wegener, Tina Wegener, and Rhonda Blackstone & husband Jamie. He is also survived by 9 other grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren along with numerous other relatives and friends.

Graveside services for Charles were held on Thursday, January 25, 2007 at 1:00 pm in the Lonepine cemetery, in Bigfork, Montana.

Memorials may be given in his name and left at the funeral home in McCook.

Virginia G (Burns) Wing

Virginia G. Wing, age 89, died Thursday, January 25, 2007 at McCook Community Hospital.

She was born February 4, 1917 to Harry and Edna (Newbrough) Burns at Ft. Dodge, Iowa. She graduated from Ft. Dodge High School.

She married Dr. Charles E. Wing September 21, 1940. To this union one daughter was born. She enjoyed playing her piano and organ, needlework, embroidery, sewing, art and crafts.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Harry and Edna, and her husband in 1981.

She is survived by her daughter, Sandra Constant and husband, Doug of McCook; three grandchildren, Scott Wheeler and wife, RoseMarie of Scottsdale, Arizona, Debra McDonald and husband, Matt of Benson, Arizona, and Tamara Young and husband, Dan of Battle Creek, Nebraska; and four great-grandchildren.

A private family service will be at a later date.

Helen Louise (Bortner) Wolfe

Helen Louise Wolfe died Tuesday, November 27, 2007 at Community Hospital in McCook at the age of 90.

She was born July 24, 1917 in Frontier County, the daughter of the late James L. and Emily (Dedman) Bortner. Helen grew up in Frontier County and graduated from Hayes County High School in 1935. She graduated from Chadron Teachers’ College and taught school in Hayes and Frontier County.

On June 1, 1939 she married Lester Wolfe at Stockville. They had two children, Gary and Mary. Helen worked at DeGroffs. She had lived in McCook since 1960 and loved her family, gardening (especially roses) and sewing.

She was a member of the First American Baptist Church and held many offices throughout the years. She was also a member of the American Baptist Women and Gideon’s Auxiliary.

She was preceded in death by: her husband, Lester on December 23, 1980; her parents; and her step-mother, Myrtle Bortner; a son, Gary on February 21, 1947; a sister, Freida Wolfe and one brother, Marion Bortner.

Survivors include: her daughter Mary Ellingson of Omaha; a grandson, Christopher Ellingson and great grandchildren, Christian and Alexia Ellingson all of Scottsbluff; niece, Kathy Heather; nephews, Larry and Don Wolfe.

Memorials were to be given to the American Cancer Society or the Alzheimer’s Association.

Funeral services were Friday, November 30 at 2 p.m. at Memorial United Methodist Church in McCook with Pastor Jeff Thurman officiating. Burial took place in Memorial Park cemetery.

Virgil Ray Woodhams

Virgil Ray Woodhams of McCook died Friday, February 16, 2007 at Community Hospital. He was 80 years old.

Virgil was born on December 11, 1926 in Denver, Colorado to George H. and Hazel M. (Lucas) Woodhams. He graduated from Manual High School, Denver, CO in 1944.

He entered the US Navy on February 28, 1945 and served during World War II. He was honorably discharged on July 20, 1946. He reentered on July 18, 1950 and served during the Korean Conflict. He was honorably discharged on August 29, 1951.

Virgil married Ruth M. Kirch on October 4, 1953 at Denver, Colorado. To this union three children were born. They made their home in the Denver area where Virgil was a programmer for heavy construction for many years. Among some of his contracts was the Apollo Space Mission. They later enjoyed retirement in Forsyth, Missouri and then moved to McCook to be closer to family.

He was a member of Peace Lutheran Church.

Preceding him in death were his parents, George and Hazel Woodhams; and one sister, Delores Funke.

Survivors include his wife, Ruth Woodhams of McCook; son, James R. Woodhams and wife, Denise, of Murrieta, CA; two daughters, Cynthia M. and husband, Stephen Belanger, of Marietta, GA and Debra L. and husband, Douglas Swanson, of Indianola; one brother, David L. Woodhams, and wife, Juanema, of Grand Junction, CO; two sisters, Peggy Nolan of LaGrande, OR and Jean Pettigrew of South Carolina; and six grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given in his name to Shepherd of the Lakes Lutheran Church Building Fund, Forsyth, Missouri.

Memorial services were Tuesday, February 20, 2007, 10:30 a.m. at Peace Lutheran Church with Pastor Brad Rick officiating. A private family inurnment will be held at a later time.

Harold Edward Yeager

Harold Edward Yeager died Wednesday, January 17, 2007 at his home in McCook. He was 78 years old.

Harold was born April 1, 1928 in Culbertson to Henry and Anna Marie (Hein) Yeager. He attended school in Culbertson.

On May 14, 1950, he married Norma Jean Wolgamott. To this union five children were born. They made their home in McCook where Harold was employed as a heavy equipment operator for the Nebraska Department of Roads, McCook Division. He retired in 1990 after 36 years of service.

Harold was a member of the McCook Eagle’s Club. His hobbies included gardening, searching with his metal detector, going to garage sales, and working in his shop.

Preceding him in death were his parents, Henry and Anna Yeager; his wife, Norma on November 30, 1993; three brothers, Harry, Henry and George in infancy; and four sisters, Esther Zwickle, Mabel Herrmann, Marie Brenning and Alma Dack.

Survivors include his children: Georgia Kelly, Cindy Banos of McCook, Wesley Yeager and wife Paula of McCook, Lesley Yeager and wife Nancy of Kearney, MO and Kenneth Yeager of McCook; 11 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren; nephews, nieces and a host of friends.

Memorials may be given in his name to the American Cancer Society.

A Funeral service was on Saturday, January 20, 2007, 2 p.m. at Carpenter Breland Chapel with Pastor Clark Bates officiating. Burial was in the Culbertson cemetery.
