John Joseph Joseph Jason Clancy

John died on Wednesday, February 13, 2008 at his home in Hayes Center. He was 72 years old.

John was born to David William and Veronica (Scott) Clancy on July 23, 1935 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He grew up and was schooled mainly in Philadelphia. He attended Holy Ghost Preparatory School in Bensalem, Pennsylvania, University of Pennsylvania earning a Bachelor Degree in Business Administration and Temple University earning a Bachelors Degree in Industrial Engineering.

On October 10, 1998, John and Patty S. (Deisley) were married at the Immanuel Evangelical Lutheran Church at the Stuhr Museum in Grand Island, Nebraska. They resided at Hayes Center, Nebraska.

John was a Korean Veteran being honorably discharged on July 22, 1959 from the Navy. He was a Tin Can Sailor. John had two uncontrollable diseases; one was alcoholism, which he defeated on December 24, 1973, and the other was two strains of cancer, one of which defeated him. John was a Webelos (Cub Scout) Eagle (Boy Scout), Assistant Scout Master, Scout Master, and Assistant SEA Scout Master. Besides the various trips to skid rows and Medical Centers, he and two fellow officers opened a business. He was well traveled and was known by many state and county officials, particularly sheriffs, clerks and highway superintendents.

Jason was his professional name and he was well known for his talks in the fields of safety and alcoholism. He held offices up to chairman in several including American Red Cross Safety and National Fire Protection Association. Jason was employed with Nebraska Intergovernmental Risk Management Association (NIRMA) at the time of his death.

Some would ask how so much could be done in such a short time and he would tell them "I was Irish, a drunk, a fighter and a fool. I was finally able to sober up and through the use of spiritual tools; it's been one hell-of-a-ride".

Preceding him in death were his parents; one son; and father-in-law, Louis Deisley.

Survivors include his wife Pat of Hayes Center; son Robert LaRocca and fiancé, Shannon Lee, of Lincoln; son Troy Stover and wife, Renay, of Grand Island; daughter Mindy Hackel and husband, Jon of Ord; five grandchildren, Andrew and Rachel Stover, Payton Hackel, and Haley and Faith Andreesen; two brothers; one sister, Barbara Ann; mother-in-law, Alice Deisley of Franklin; and many nieces and nephew and a host of friends.

In lieu of flowers, memorials were to be given in his name to the Callahan Cancer Center at Great Plains Regional Medical Center in North Platte, the Hayes Center EMT’s, or the McCook Community Home Health/Hospice.

A celebration of his life was held at Carpenter Breland Funeral Home in McCook, NE on Friday, February 22, 2008, 10:00 a.m. with Pastor Fay Ann Blaylock officiating. Another Celebration took place at Roper and Sons Funeral Home in Lincoln, NE, 4300 East “O” Street, on Saturday, February 23, 2008, 3:00 p.m. with Rev. Cole Fowler officiating. Inurnment took place at the Maple Grove cemetery in Bloomington, Nebraska.

Rayburn Glenn Childers

Rayburn Glenn Childers, 84, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully on March 7, 2008 at Southwest Washington Medical Center in Vancouver, WA after a short bout with kidney cancer.

Rayburn was born on December 24, 1923, to Glenn Wilson Childers and Eunice Marie (Neff) Childers in Campus, Kansas. He was the second of six siblings. All of his siblings except his sister, Jane Schlittenhardt of Arizona, preceded him in death.

Ray was a WWII veteran who served in the European Theatre in the Army’s 82nd Airborne Glider Division. He was honorably discharged on January 18, 1946.

Ray married Cleo Mae Macy in 1954. The couple spent 48 years together before Cleo’s death on February 26, 2003.

He retired from the Burlington Northern Railroad after more than 40 years of service and spent many happy years in retirement.

His many hobbies included community service, woodworking, computing, photography and craft work.

Although not recently active, he attained the 32nd degree in Masonry. He was active in the church and community and particularly enjoyed his volunteer work with AWANA. Some of Ray’s biggest joys were the lasting and close friendships he built.

Ray is survived by sons Daniel Leonard Childers (wife Judy) and David Lawrence Childers (wife Vicki) and families of Florida.; daughter Cleo Ray Childers (partner Vee) and family of Vancouver, Washington and daughter Patricia Jones of Tulare, California. His children and their families which include ten grandchildren and nine great- grandchildren were all a significant part of Ray’s life.

Memorials were to be given in his name.

Ray’s memorial celebration was held at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 29, 2008 at the McCook Memorial United Methodist Church with the Rev. Dr. Jeff Thurman officiating.

Inurnment took place in Memorial Park cemetery in McCook, Nebraska with military honors.

Jane Elizabeth (Gorycki) Carmichael

Jane "Jean" Elizabeth Carmichael died Wednesday, April 2, 2008 at her home in Indianola. She was 76.

She was born in New York City on June 30, 1931 to John and Mary Gorycki. She graduated in 1948 in New York.

She married Marion Ardell Carmichael on May 5, 1951 in New York City. To this union, three children were born. After raising their family in New York City, they retired to Indianola in 1980. She enjoyed playing cards, traveling, and spending time with her grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

She was a member of St. Catherine’s Catholic Church in Indianola and the American Legion Auxiliary.

She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Mary; three brothers, Frank, Tony and Ed Gorycki; one sister, Helen Hurst.

She is survived by her husband, Marion Carmichael of Indianola; sons, Martin Carmichael and wife, Barbara of Spring, Texas, Pat Carmichael of New York City; daughter, Deb Wooley of Spring, Texas; sisters, Stella Contegni and husband, Joe, Wanda Gorycki, and Sophie Pontiatowski all of New York City; brother-in-law, Ted Hurst of Centereach, NY; sister-in-laws, Alyce Stritt, Wilma Liess, of McCook and Bonnie Murkowski of Farmingdale, NY; three grandchildren, Jason Wooley, Stephen Wooley and Thomas Carmichael; and nieces and nephews.

Mass of Christian Burial took place Friday, April 4, 2008, 11:00 a.m. at St. Catherine’s Catholic Church with Father Thomas McGuire as Celebrant. Rosary was said on Thursday at 7:00 p.m. at the Funeral Home. Burial took place in Ft. McPherson National cemetery in Maxwell at 2:15 p.m.

Memorials were to be given in her name to Community Home Health and Hospice.

Ruth Carol (Guthrie) Cappel

Ruth Carol Cappel died Thursday, April 3, 2008 at the Dundy County Hospital in Benkelman, NE. She was 74.

She was born March 30, 1934 to Leland Archie and Charlotta Augusta (Bonar) Guthrie in Indianola. She graduated from Indianola High School in 1952.

She married Gaylord Cappel on September 29, 1956 in Indianola, NE. She had lived in McCook over 40 years, before moving to Benkelman in 2004. She enjoyed spending time with her family and going to garage sales.

She was a member of the Evangelical Free Church in McCook.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Leland and Charlotta; former husband, Gaylord in 2003; two sons, Gary and Kenneth; daughter, Dorothy; three brothers, Carl Guthrie, Dean Guthrie, Lyle Guthrie; three sisters, Opal Madden, Evelyn Harris and Gail Porth.

She is survived by her son, Robert D. Cappel of Everett, WA; daughter, Jeanette Wonderly and husband, Tony of Benkelman; brother, Lewis Guthrie and wife, Beverly of Holbrook, NE; sister, Leah Davenport of Austin, TX; two grandchildren, Kaleb Paul Wonderly and Brady Lee Wonderly.

Memorials were to be given in her name.

Funeral services were Monday, April 7, 10:30 a.m. at the Evangelical Free Church with Pastor Bruce Lester officiating. Burial took place in Riverview cemetery.

Anita Christine (Unger) Callan

Anita Christine Callan died Friday, March 21, 2008 at Cambridge Memorial Hospital. She was 83 years old.

Anita was born on August 24, 1924 in Red Willow County, Nebraska to Gustave and Lydia (Schaffert) Unger. She attended school at McCook Public Schools.

On October 12, 1947, she was united in marriage to Dareld “Neal” Callan in McCook. To this union four children were born. They made their home in McCook for a short time until Neal’s job transferred them to northeastern Nebraska. They later moved to Alliance and resided there until Neal’s retirement. They returned to McCook in 1986.

She was a member of Memorial United Methodist Church in McCook and Alliance Eagle’s Auxiliary. She volunteered many hours at Hillcrest Nursing Home. She enjoyed dancing, visiting with friends, playing cards and bingo, cooking and baking, and spending time with her children and grandchildren.

Preceding her in death were her parents, Gustave and Lydia Unger; and daughter, Sharon Brennemann.

Survivors include her husband of 60 years, Neal Callan of McCook; daughter, Sandy and husband, Mark Hissam, of Alliance; two sons, Randy Callan of McCook and Ronald Callan and wife, Cynthia, of Kearney; two brothers, Melvin Unger and wife, Glenva, of McCook and Willis Unger and wife, Marlene, of Apache Junction, AZ; three sisters, Evelyn and husband, Dale Wagner of Thornton, CO, Erma and husband, Ralph Greenlee, of Spearfish, SD and Phyllis and husband, Harold Clapp, of McCook; nine grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, memorials were to be given in her name.

Memorial services were Wednesday, March 26, 2008, 11:00 a.m. at Memorial United Methodist Church in McCook with the Rev. Dr. Jeff Thurman officiating. Inurnment will be in Fort McPherson National cemetery at a later time.

Blanch Margaret (Rippen) Brown

Blanch Margaret Brown died on Tuesday, March 11, 2008 at El Dorado Manor. She was 99.

Blanch was born on April 26, 1908, at Hallam, Nebraska to Henry and Carrie (Schnieder) Rippen. She attended County School Dist. 141 near Kramer, Nebraska. Her family moved to Culbertson in 1926.

On November 16, 1927, she married Hamer Brown. To this union two children were born. Blanch was a homemaker as well as a salesclerk for DeGroff’s Department Store for 30 years.

Blanch was a 65 year member of Trinity United Methodist Church, she was also a member of the United Methodist Women, and the Culbertson American Legion and VFW Auxiliaries #133. She sponsored many Girl Scout Trips traveling to 47 states. She was an avid Culbertson Bear fan attending many of their sports events. In her free time she enjoyed crochet, baking and her rose garden.

Preceding her in death were her parents Henry and Carrie Rippen; son-in-law, Paul “Butch” Ross; four brothers, Alfred, Willard, Harlan and infant Irvin Rippen; one sister, Merylin Fassler; sisters-in-law, Caroline Rippen, Genevive Rippen; and brother-in-law Donald “Don” Fassler.

Survivors include her son, Dolyn Brown, Sr. and wife, Barbara, of Culbertson; one daughter, Joylyn Ross of Culbertson; two brothers, Gordon Rippen and wife, Frary, Leland Rippen all of Culbertson; seven grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, four great-great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law, Jackie Rippen and Maxine Poore; and a host of other family and friends.

She will be remembered for her many acts of kindness and pleasing others.

Memorials were to be given in her name.

Funeral service were Saturday, March 15, 2008, 11:00 a.m. at Trinity United Methodist Church with burial in the Culbertson cemetery.

Terrance Harold Bridger

Terrance “Terry” Harold Bridger, age 63, died Wednesday, February 13, 2008 in Oberlin, Kansas.

He was born May 29, 1944 in Albany, New York to Harold H. and Virginia I. (Shaul) Bridger.

He entered the U.S. Army in September of 1963 and was honorably discharged in September of 1969. Terry was a heavy equipment operator for the Nebraska Department of Roads for many years. After moving to Oberlin in 2004, he worked for Ampride Gas Station until his retirement.

He enjoyed hunting, fishing and cooking in his free time.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Virginia Bridger.

He is survived by his significant other, Marilyn Farr of Oberlin; daughters, Erin Bridger of Rio Rancho, New Mexico, Kelly Corona of Lake Forest, California; father, Harold Bridger of Ilion, New York; sister, Donna of Mohawk, New York; niece, Lori Kline of Schenectady, New York; two grandchildren; and numerous friends.

Memorials were to be given in his name.

Memorial services were held Friday, February 22, 2008, 3:00 p.m. at Carpenter Breland Chapel in McCook with Jerry Beckenhauer officiating.

Jerry Lee Bradley

Jerry Lee Bradley of McCook, Nebraska died Wednesday, July 2, 2008 at Bryan LGH Medical Center East in Lincoln. He was 71 years old.

Jerry was born in Culbertson, on September 24, 1936, the son of Harold J. and Goldie V. Matson Bradley. He attended the Culbertson Public Schools, and lived in this area all his life.

On May 27, 1957, he married Janet Catherine Schuler at St Alban’s Episcopal Church in McCook. Four children were born to this union.

Jerry started working as a brick tender helping build the McCook High School at the age of 16. He later became a self-employed paperhanger, painter, wood floor and wood furniture refinisher. He retired when his health failed him. Jerry was instrumental in teaching his sons the value of using their hands and talents as he had. Jerry enjoyed his family, especially his grandchildren. He also enjoyed fishing and hunting. He took pride in having a well-groomed yard.

Preceding him in death were his parents, Harold and Goldie Bradley.

Survivors include his wife Janet of McCook; three sons, Douglas Harold Bradley and wife Kathy, Paul Warren Bradley and wife Camy, and Timothy Schuler Bradley and wife Joleen all of McCook; one daughter Mary Catherine Bradley of McCook; two brothers, Kenneth Bradley and wife, Betty and Donald Bradley and wife, Glenda all of McCook; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Memorials were to be given in his name

Funeral Services were Saturday, July 5 at 10:00 at St. Alban’s Episcopal Church with the Rev. Dr. Mary Hendricks officiating. Burial took place in Memorial Park cemetery.
