Irene Lillian Kolbet

Irene Lillian Kolbet, age 91, died Monday, July 14, 2008 at Hillcrest Nursing Home in McCook.

She was born January 4, 1917 to Nicholas and Magdalena “Lena” (Giespert) Kolbet at their homestead southeast of the St. Ann Church in Frontier County. She grew up in Hayes County where she attended school in a one room school house with her many brothers, sisters and cousins, causing much mayhem and mirth.

She joined the army in November 1942 in the Women’s Auxiliary Army Corp (WAAC), assigned to the photography section, and was stationed in Wilmington, North Carolina and Orlando, Florida. She was honorably discharged in November 1945.

She returned to the home farm to live with her mother and sister Elsie. She worked on the farm raising chickens, cattle and crops. The chickens, her pride and joy, provided eggs or were sold as fryers.

She was active in the St. Ann Church, where she belonged to the Altar Society. She also taught CCD (Catechism of Christian Doctrine) classes for the first through fourth grades and managed sales of St. Ann merchandise.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Nicholas and Lena Kolbet; sisters, Bernice Campbell, Emma Campbell, Elsie Kolbet, Sister Mary Everista (Dorothy Kolbet), Fern Palic; brothers, Charles Kolbet, Edward Kolbet, Dave Kolbet, Vernon Kolbet and Oscar Kolbet.

She is survived by her sister-in-law, Wanda Kolbet of Moreland, ID; and many nieces and nephews who will miss her dearly.

Memorials were to be given in her name.

Rosary was Saturday, July 19, 2008 9:30 a.m. at rural McCook St. Ann’s Catholic Church with Father Gary Brethour as Celebrant. Mass of Christian Burial followed at 10:00 a.m. Inurnment was in St. Ann’s cemetery.

Bernice A. (Oberg) Kircher

Bernice A. Kircher died Friday, January 25, 2008 at Community Hospital in McCook. She was 86 years old.

Bernice was born in Giltner, Nebraska on September 19, 1921, to Oscar and Anna (Kindvall) Oberg. She attended McCook Schools.

She married Lyle Graves and they had a son, Russell. They were divorced March 27, 1974. She later married Gere Kircher on April 18. 1975.

Bernice was a homemaker. She was a member of Memorial United Methodist Church.

Preceding her in death were her parents, Oscar and Anna Oberg; son, Russell Graves, January 13, 1980; her husbands, Lyle Graves and Gere Kircher; three sisters, Elizabeth Kircher, Margaret Brown and Goldie Amanet; and two brothers, Carl Oberg and Gust Oberg; nephew Eddie Oberg and niece, Charlene Doherty; step son, Gary Kircher.

Survivors include: step-daughter, Doris Roberts; step-daughter-in-law, Karen Hodson; two granddaughters, Jennifer and Kathy; nieces and nephews, Elenor Walters, Jim Kircher, Jane Palmer, Marilyn Malleck, Norris Brown, Harry Brown, John Brown, Carlana Morphis, Vernon Oberg, Don Oberg, Diane Geddes, and Bobbie Amanet; great grandchildren, great grandnieces and nephews as well as great-great-grand nieces and nephews.

Memorials were to be given in her name.

Funeral services were Wednesday, January 30, 2008, 11:00 a.m. at Carpenter Breland Chapel with Rev. Dr. Jeff Thurman officiating. Burial took place in Memorial Park cemetery.

Francis J. Kircher

Francis J. Kircher died Friday, May 30, 2008 at Good Samaritan Care Center in Arapahoe. He was 84 years old.

On January 8, 1924 he was born in McCook to Fred H. and Anna Marie (Haag) Kircher. He graduated from Red Willow High School in 1942 and farmed all his life northwest of Indianola. He enjoyed hunting.

Francis was a member of St. Catherine’s Catholic Church in Indianola and the Knights of Columbus.

Proceeding him in death were his parents; brother John and twin brother Freddie; an infant sister, Helen; and sister-in-law Betty.

Survivors include nieces, nephews and their spouses: Jerry and Tina Kircher, Donna Kircher and Kay and Laurn Oltmer all of Indianola; eight great nieces and nephews: Kenton, Shelby, Logan and Emily Kircher and Matthew, Holli, Cara and Bailey Oltmer all of Indianola;

Memorials were to be given in his name.

Rosary took place Sunday at Carpenter Breland Funeral Home.

Mass of Christian Burial was Monday at 10 a.m. at St. Catherine’s Catholic Church in Indianola with Father Thomas McGuire and Father Robert Barnhill officiating. Burial took place in St. Catherine’s cemetery, Indianola.

Ellen Margaret Kennedy

Ellen Margaret Kennedy, formerly of Indianola, NE died Saturday, August 16, 2008 at the Cambridge Manor. She was 97 years old.

On October 25, 1910, Ellen was born in Kanona, Kansas to Joseph and Margaret (Janousek) Fiala. At the age of two, her mother died in childbirth and she was then raised by her paternal Aunt Anne Locy. She graduated from Hugo, Colorado High School in 1929. She then attended the Conservatory of Music in Fort Collins, Colorado for one year. She returned to Kansas where she married Fred Raymond Kennedy in Norton, KS on January 6, 1934 and to this union five children were born. In 1938 they moved to the family farm south of Bartley with an Indianola address. At the age of 56 she obtained her LPN Nursing degree at Fort Collins and came back to Nebraska to help open the Long-Term Care Wing at Cambridge, Nebraska.

Ellen was an avid gardener. Her passion was enjoying all her children and grandchildren’s extracurricular activities. She was active in the Domestic Abuse program providing a safe house for women and their children and she was also involved in various women organizations. She especially enjoyed traveling, including her trips to Europe and the Holy Lands.

Preceding her in death were her parents, her husband, Fred in 1971, two brothers, Edward and Carl Fiala and one grandson, Douglas Kennedy.

Survivors include her five children, Patrick Kennedy and wife Joyce of Farmington Hills, MI, Jon Kennedy and wife Gloria of Arlington, TX, Kathryn Shirley and husband Lyle of Long Beach, CA, Sally Sitzman and husband Larry of Lincoln and Fred Kennedy and wife Holly of Indianola; 11 grandsons, Mike, Troy and Tom Kennedy; Sean and Pat Shirley; Eddie, Eric and Jason Sitzman; Rudy, Russell and Tyler Kennedy; four granddaughters, Debbie McKee, Michelle Dillon, Shannon Gifford and Desiree Shirley; two step grandchildren, Brian and Adam Brennan; 21 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Memorials were to be directed to Valley Hope of Norton, KS or the Decatur County Last Indian Raid Museum/Bohemian Hall at Oberlin, KS.

Rosary was Wednesday at the funeral home in McCook at 7 p.m.

Mass of Christian Burial took place Thursday at 10:00 a.m. at St. Catherine’s Catholic Church in Indianola with Father Thomas McGuire and Father Robert Barnhill officiating. Burial took place in Cedar Bluffs cemetery, Cedar Bluffs, KS.

Myrna Sue (Fruhling) Keller

Myrna Sue Keller ended her courageous battle on Monday, February 4, 2008 at El Dorado Nursing Home in Trenton. She was 74 years old.

Myrna was born on November 3, 1933 in Harlan County, Nebraska to Arthur William and Lucille Evelyn (Borges) Fruhling. She attended school in Trenton.

On March 3, 1950, she was united in marriage to Donald Eugene (Pee Wee) Keller. To this union four children were born. They made their home in Trenton where Myrna was a homemaker and a caregiver for the elderly.

Myrna attended United Church of Christ. She enjoyed playing cards with her bridge club, cheering on the Chicago Cubs, and spending time with family and friends. She made several cross-stitch quilts for her children and grandchildren.

Preceding her in death were her parents, Arthur and Lucille Fruhling; her husband, Donald Keller on March 17, 1997; a grandson, Corey Fritsch on December 17, 1997; and an infant brother, Jackie.

Survivors include her son David Keller of McCook; three daughters, Martha Jane “Duffy” Keller of Culbertson, Rita and husband, Bill Fritsch of Culbertson and Joni and husband, Kevin Drain, of Trenton; sister, Ruthie Doyle of Culbertson; brother, Larry Fruhling and wife, Bernita, of Bellevue, Iowa; she was “Grandma Buck” to five grandchildren, Kasey (Dick) Kompus, Kris (Tara) Drain, Kati (Aaron) Brennan, D.J. Krajewski and Amy Keller; six great-grandchildren, Jordan, Terra, Kassidy, Kenzy, Bo and Lacyn; special nephew, John Keller; numerous family and a host of friends.

Memorials were to be given in her name.

Memorial services were Thursday, February 7, 2008, 10:00 a.m. at United Church of Christ in Trenton with Pastor Faye Ann Blaylock officiating. Inurnment in the Trenton cemetery.

Carl E. Keller

Trenton resident Carl E. Keller, age 90, died May 4, 2008 at Community Hospital of McCook. He was born in Trenton, November 8, 1917, to Howard G. and Bertha G. (Riley) Keller and graduated from Trenton High School in 1935.

Carl married Mary Jane Cole July 27, 1942 in Norton, Kansas, and shortly after was called by the US Army to serve in the World War II European Theater. He was a recipient of the Bronze Star, the Purple Heart, and received a Silver Star nomination for his service to our country.

Following military discharge, Carl worked in construction until 1952, when he was severely injured in the construction of the Trenton Dam. He retrained as a linotype operator and worked for area newspapers until 1959, when he accepted a similar position in Idaho. While in Idaho, he worked for both the St. Anthony Chronicle News and the Buhl Herald. Carl and Mary returned to live in the Trenton area in 1974.

Fishing, woodworking, cooking, gardening, and sports were a few of Carl’s interests. He was most often known to family, friends, and neighbors as a well-rounded “fix-it” guy.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Howard and Bertha; his wife Mary Jane in 2001; and nine brothers and sisters.

Carl’s survivors include his children, Leon K. Keller and wife Gin of Round Rock, TX, William D. Keller and wife Lana of Sidney, Carlene R. Keller of McCook, Marilyn K. Salter and husband James of McMinnville, OR, Gail Kohn of McCook; sisters, Eleanor Brown of Trenton, Evelyn Atwood of Englewood, CO; seven grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren.

Memorial graveside services took place Saturday, May 24, 2008, 11:00 a.m. at the Trenton cemetery. A military honor guard was provided by the Trenton Veterans. A life celebration dinner followed at the Trenton Community Center from 12-3 p.m.

Memorials were to be directed to the Trenton Rescue Service in his name.

Ruth Virginia (Jeffers) Johnson

Ruth Virginia Johnson of Hayes Center passed away Tuesday, March 11, 2008 at Countryside Care Center in Gordon, Nebraska.

Ruth was born January 9, 1919 in Hayes Center to William and Mary (Bailey) Jeffers.

Her mother passed away when she was two, so she was raised by her grandparents, Arthur and Dawn Bailey. She graduated from Palisade High School in 1937.

On October 22, 1941 she married Earl Lawrence Johnson. Three children were born to this union.

She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Legion Auxiliary, Harmony Club and Nifty Nipper Club. She loved spending time with her grandchildren, great-grandchildren, gardening, knitting, quilting, bingo and playing cards.

Preceding her in death was her parents, William and Mary; grandparents, Arthur and Dawn; husband Earl; infant grandson’s, Kyle and Robert Johnson; one brother, Charles Jeffers, one sister, Mary B. Selph.

Survivors include daughter, Mary Nielsen and husband, Tom of Gordon; son, James and wife, Lesa of Hayes Center; son, Kenny Johnson of St. Paul, Minn; grandchildren, Clint Nielsen, Tammi Ahrens and husband, Heath, Crystal Staley and husband, Justin; Blaine, Alisha and Tristan Johnson, Justin and Jenny Hamilton; Ryan and Erica Johnson, Alyssa and Nick Dotting; two great-grandchildren, Ashton James Johnson and Claire Mary Ahrens.

Memorials were to be given in her name.

Rosary took place at Carpenter Breland Chapel

Mass of Christian Burial took place Friday, March 14, 2008, 1:00 p.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in rural Hayes Center with burial in the Hayes Center cemetery.

Floyd LaVerne Hunter

Floyd LaVerne Hunter of McCook died Friday, March 28, 2008 at Community Hospital in McCook. He was 81 years old.

Floyd was born on November 21, 1926 in Lincoln County, Nebraska to Walter H. and Petrea (Sorenson) Hunter. He graduated from North Platte High School in 1943. He entered the US Coast Guard on April 29, 1945 and served during World War II. He was honorably discharged on July 17, 1945. He also served as a Merchant Marine.

He married Bernyce Brown on July 23, 1945 in Oberlin, KS. To this union three children were born. She preceded him in death in 1982. On January 19, 1985 he married Margaret L. (Ruf) Goodenberger in McCook. Four more children joined his family.

Floyd was employed as a shoe salesman for Brown’s Shoe Store and Pat’s Booterie for over 60 years.

Floyd was a member of the First Congregational Church and a local 12-step fellowship group. He enjoyed Nebraska football, fishing and baseball.

Preceding him in death were his parents, Walter and Petrea Hunter; his first wife, Bernyce; and infant sister, Marjorie.

Survivors include his wife, Margaret Hunter of McCook; two sons, Mike Hunter and wife, Pat, of Baltimore, MD and Steve Hunter and wife, Marilyn, of McCook; one daughter, Trish and husband, Cliff Clapp, Jr. of McCook; step-sons, Joe Goodenberger, Sr. and wife, Shari, of Culbertson and Steve Goodenberger and wife, Shawna, of McCook; step-daughters, Gail and husband, Bryon Best, of McCook and Rita Lenhardt of Fort Collins, CO; one sister, Maxine and husband, Charles Kelley, of North Platte; 21 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

Memorials were to be given in his name.

Funeral services were Tuesday, April 1, 2008, 10:30 a.m., at the First Congregational Church with Pastor Steve Bales officiating. Cremation followed the service.

Michael E. Howard

Michael “Mike” Eugene Howard died unexpectedly Saturday, May 17, 2008 at his home in Howe, Indiana while working on a car. He was 18 years old.

Mike was born on September 23, 1989 to James D. and Virginia (King) Howard in Deming, New Mexico. He was a member of the junior class at Lakeland High School in Howe.

Mike was a respectful and outgoing young man. He was employed at Pizza Hut in Sturgis, Michigan. In his free time, he loved to go fishing.

Survivors include his mother, Virginia King of Howe; his father, James Howard of McCook; one brother, Nicholas D. Howard of McCook; and grandparents, John and Nelda Goetz of Deming, NM and Lula Jones of Michigan; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.

Memorials were to be given in his name.

Graveside services were Friday, May 23, 10:00 a.m. at Memorial Park cemetery with Pastor Clark Bates officiating. Burial took place in Memorial Park cemetery.
