Merlin L. Smith

Merlin L. Smith, age 80, died in his home in McCook, on Tuesday, January 8, 2008.

Merlin was born at home in Beaver City on December 28, 1927 to Albert and Birdie M. (Volgamore) Smith. He grew up in Beaver City and attended grade school and high school there, graduating in 1945.

He joined the Merchant Marines after high school and made two inter-coastal trips from West Coast to East Coast and went thru the Panama Canal four times, one trip to Hawaii and on trip to Kobe, Japan.

Upon leaving the Merchant Marines, he joined the Army in 1948. Basic training was in Gordon, Georgia. Then he went to Camp Gordon, Georgia for basic training as a Military Policeman. He was transferred to Sandia Base, Albuquerque, New Mexico as a M. P. and was honorably discharged in 1950.

After leaving the army he went to school for two years at Chaffee Jr. College at Ontario, California. He played football one year in the Army and two years at the college.

Merlin then returned home in 1952 to Beaver City and worked in a country elevator. He met Carol Thorn there and they were married in 1953 and they moved to McCook. To this union five children were born.

Merlin worked for BC Christopher and Co. as a commodity broker. He also bought and sold cash grain. He took over as manager of BC Christopher and Co. in 1958 and was also a stock broker. In 1968 he left BC Christopher and started his own business as McCook Commodities. He built his office building at 1006 West B Street in 1982 and retired from the commodity business in 1998. In his retirement he spent many volunteer hours at the McCook Pantry and attending his grandson's sports events.

In April 1979 he married Nina Breedlove in McCook, NE. They enjoyed traveling to the East and West Coasts, Florida and Canada, Hawaii, Alaska and Europe. They were able to see the Passion Play in Germany in 1985 and the Matterhorn in the Swiss Alps.

Preceded: Parents; wife, Nina who died in June 5, 2002; a son, Steven Lee Smith (May, 2002); a daughter, Sydney Lynn Titman (1996); two brothers, Donald Albert Smith and Eugene Edward Smith.

Survivors; three daughters, Paula Osborn of McCook, NE, Allison Fults of Arapahoe, NE and Susan Ridgeway of Lincoln, NE; son-in-law David Fults of Beaver City, NE; one brother, Charles Smith and wife Eleanore “Dolly” of Elizabeth, CO; nine grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren, also Special friend, Lou Miner of McCook, NE.

Memorials were to be given to the McCook Senior Center

Cremation was chosen and memorial services took place at St. Alban's Episcopal Church in McCook with the Rev. Peter Nissen officiating. Inurnment in the Deaver cemetery near Stamford, Nebraska.

Virgil Ervin Sines

Virgil Ervin Sines died Sunday, February 17, 2008 at Memorial Hospital in Cambridge. He was 88 years old.

Virgil was born on July 30, 1919 at the family farm in Decatur County, Kansas to Lester David and Lela M. (VanPelt) Sines.

He entered the US Army on November 22, 1943 and served during World War II as an automotive mechanic and military police. He was honorably discharged on May 5, 1946.

Virgil returned to the McCook community and continued to be a mechanic for E.M. Sliger Motors and later for Lee Janssen Motors until his retirement in 1982.

On April 25, 1947, Virgil was united in marriage to Edith (Dawson) Cochran in Hills City, Kansas. To this union one son, Danny was born.

Virgil attended First Assembly of God. He was a member of the Danbury American Legion McDonald/Ryan Post #276. Virgil enjoyed fishing, his cats, and especially spending time with his grandchildren.

Preceding him in death were his parents, Lester and Lela Sines; his wife, Edith Sines; his son Danny Sines; one brother, Cleith Sines; and one sister, Virginia Harsch.

Survivors include his step-son, Lawrence Cochran of Tucumcari, NM; daughter-in-law, Carolyn Sines of McCook; one brother, Gerald Sines and wife, Leeora, of McCook; sister, Carolyn and husband, Gary Leitner, of McCook; two grandchildren, Dennis Mizell and wife, Sarath, of Angleton, TX and Christy and husband, Scott Lesher, of Grand Island; and three great-grandchildren, Casey Lesher, Andrew and Jessica Mizell; numerous nieces, nephews, and family.

Memorials were to be given in his name.

Funeral services were Thursday, February 21, 2008, 10:30 a.m. at the First Assembly of God Church with Pastor Eddie Wright officiating. Burial took place in Sherman cemetery rural Decatur County, Kansas.

Howard Schneider

Howard Schneider, age 78, died Sunday, April 13, 2008 with his family by his side.

He was born October 17, 1929 in Hayes County, Nebraska to Peter T. and Mary (Giespert) Schneider. He attended Hayes County schools. He served in the US Army during the Korean Conflict.

He married Irene M. Bauer on December 4, 1953 in McCook. To this union three children were born.

He worked for Goodson Plumbing and Volz, Inc. for a total of 42 years. He enjoyed his family, grandchildren and granddogs. He spent time fishing, hunting, reading western books, and attending McCook Bison football games and stock car races.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, Victor, two brothers-in-law, Lawrence Weskamp and Daniel Dolan.

He is survived by his wife, Irene of McCook; son, Scott Schneider and wife, Audrey of North Platte; two daughters, Lynda Jollensten and husband, Barry of Ogallala, Deb Stoney and husband, Larry of Herndon, Kansas; two sisters, Delyla Weskamp of McCook, Opal Dolan of Indianola; nine grandchildren, Jared Jollensten and fiancé Lindsey Struckman, Trent Jollensten, Michelle Prewo and husband Paul, Aaron Stoney and wife, Shawna, Keith Stoney and wife, Bethany, Nathan Stoney, Kaelea Stoney, Cheri Schneider, Jana Schneider; and four great-grandchildren.

Memorials were to be given in his name.

Funeral services were Thursday, April 17, 2008, 11:00 a.m. at Carpenter Breland Funeral Chapel with Jerry Beckenhauer officiating. Burial took place in Memorial Park cemetery with military honors.

Lola I (Fischer) Ruppert

Lola I. Ruppert, age 75, died Wednesday, July 16, 2008 at Community Hospital in McCook . On February 25th 1933, she was born on the family farm south of Curtis, to James “Jim” and Leola “Ruth” (Kistler) Fischer. She was raised on the family farm and graduated from the University of Nebraska School of Agriculture in 1951.

On September 10, 1951 Lola married John Ruppert in McCook. They started their life together stationed at Fort Hood, Texas where John was in the Army. In 1953, after he was discharged from the Army they moved to the farm northwest of McCook until moving into McCook in 1981. Lola was John’s “right-hand man” in their farming operation along with raising hogs and chickens. She was a caregiver to many, young and old.

Preceding her in death were her parents; two brothers, Leroy in infancy and Richard “Dick” Fischer; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Jay and Doris Ruppert; and brothers-in-law, Dale and Homer Ruppert and Mack Nutt.

Survivors include: her husband John of McCook; two sons, Ronald and wife Kathy Ruppert of McCook and Douglas of Curtis; four grandchildren, Ryan Ruppert and wife Francie of Denver, Colorado, Willis Ruppert and wife Libby of McCook, Brent of Curtis and special friend, Erin Meyers of Indianola, Bambi Meyers and husband Jeremy of Indianola; two great-granddaughters, Natasha and Alexis Ruppert; brothers James Fischer and wife Lois of Casper Wyoming, Clyde Fischer and wife Cathy of Cambridge, Dave Fischer and wife Delma of Maywood; sisters, Lucille Nutt of Curtis and Barb Easton and husband Bob of Laramie, Wyoming; sister-in-law, Elane Fischer of Curtis; one brother-in-law, Bob Ruppert and wife Jean of McCook; five sisters-in-law, Donna Ruppert, Helen Magee and husband Ferris, Mary (Trosper) Zimbelman and Naomi Ruppert all of McCook and Ann Rowley of Wauneta and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were Monday at 10:30 a.m. at Carpenter-Breland Funeral Chapel in McCook with Rev. Dr. Jeff Thurman officiating. Burial took place in Memorial Park cemetery.

Memorials were being encouraged to the Community Hospital Foundation in her name.

Stanley Dween Rucker

Stanley Dween Rucker of Hayes Center died Friday, January 4, 2008 at Community Hospital in McCook. He was 86 years old.

Stanley was born on March 2, 1921 to Claude L. and Elizabeth M. (Orman) Rucker at the family farm in Frontier County, Nebraska. He graduated from Nebraska School of Agriculture at Curtis in 1939.

He entered the US Army Infantry of Engineers on September 28, 1942 and served during World War II. He was honorably discharged on December 5, 1945.

On June 4, 1955, he married Marilyn Gladys Alexander in North Platte. Their entire married life was spent in Hayes Center. Together, they raised one son, Alan Rucker. Stanley served as Hayes County Treasurer for several years. He also did electrical work in and around Hayes Center and most recently was a night watchman for the feedlot until he retired.

Stanley was a member of the Union Congregational United Church of Christ. He loved to play baseball in his earlier years. He later took up the sport of playing golf.

Preceding him in death were his parents, Claude and Elizabeth Rucker; his wife, Marilyn on December 28, 2006; his son, Michael Steven; and two brothers, Phillip and Ivan Rucker.

Survivors include his son, Alan M. Rucker of Trenton; one brother, Omer Rucker of Gresham, NE; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Memorials were to be given in his name.

Funeral services were Wednesday, January 9, 2008, 1:00 p.m. at Union Congregational United Church of Christ in Hayes Center with Pastor Fay Ann Blaylock officiating. Burial took place in the Hayes Center cemetery with military honors.

Donaldeen Y. (Palmer) Rowe

Donaldeen “Donny” Y. Rowe of Indianola died Tuesday, April 22, 2008 at Cambridge Memorial Hospital. She was 80 years old.

Donny was born on October 12, 1927 in Rockford, Iowa to Donald V. and Gwendolyn S. (Crowell) Palmer. She graduated from Rockford High School in 1945.

She was united in marriage to James D. Rowe on June 11, 1949 in Minnesota. To this union two children were born, Dennis and Duana. Donny was a homemaker and enjoyed crocheting, reading, puzzles and her family.

She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Lakemills, Iowa.

Preceding her in death were her parents, Donald and Gwendolyn Palmer; husband, Duane in 1978; and grandson, Jamie Thomas in 1976.

Survivors include her son, Dennis Rowe of McCook; daughter, Duana Thomas-Karr of Indianola; two brothers, Keith Palmer and wife, Jean, and Terry Palmer all of Friendswood, TX; one sister, Sue Jonward of Madison, SD; 8 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren and one great-great-granddaughter.

There were no local services. An inurnment will be later in Rockford, Iowa.

Marjorie Delores (Faubion) Richardson

Marjorie Delores (Faubion) Richardson died Saturday, February 23, 2008 at Hillcrest Nursing Home. She was 87.

She was born on February 14, 1921 to Leonard and Hazel (Thompson) Faubion. She grew up in Cambridge, NE where her father barbered. Two other siblings joined the family; Elizabeth (Betty) and Leonard (Bunny). As a very young girl, Marge styled hair for several Cambridge women for the price of ten cents per head. She also learned to sew and became an established seamstress which proved profitable for herself and her family in the years to come.

On March 13, 1938 she married Lee Richardson in Oberlin, KS. To this union were born three children: Terry, Gloria and Lisa. Both Marge and Lee were employed at Boeing in Wichita, KS shortly after their marriage. They later moved to Indianola, NE where he opened Lee's Body Shop. Marge was the bookkeeper, secretary and right hand person at the body shop. She also was employed at various times at: McCook Army Air Base, Indianola News, Ray Kurtz Insurance Agency in Indianola and finally Marge worked at the McCook hospital as a nurses assistant.

Marge was active with the Indianola Methodist Church and served as a Brownie Scout leader, Federated Women’s Club, U-Go-I-Go Club, and the American Legion Auxiliary. She took great pride in her flowers, garden and love of neighbors. She was always willing to help with her time and her wonderful homemade meals. She was known for her delicious rolls. She also loved playing golf, and all kinds of music, especially dancing and playing the drums for dance bands. She was fastidious in her appearance and fashion.

Marge was preceded in death by her parents, siblings and husband.

She is survived by her three children, Terry and wife Lynda of Aberdeen, SD; Gloria and husband Roger Tinkham of McCook, NE and Lisa and husband Rick Wilcox of McCook, NE; and eight grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren. Additionally, she is survived by her special longtime friend Al Hallowell and hometown friend and care giver Peggy Schmidt. We will all miss you and we each love you.

Grandchildren: Lt. Colonel Brad Richardson and wife Becky, Eric Richardson and wife Cindy, Debra (Tinkham) and husband Keith Yates, Gina (Tinkham) and husband Justin Coleman, Alison (Wilcox) and husband Spc. Chris Marts, Sarah, Jessica and Nathan Wilcox

Great grandchildren: Taylor, Trevor, Teryn Richardson; Kaitlin, Brianne, Morgan Richardson; Courtney, Bryce, Brady Coleman, Chloe Yates

Memorials were to be given in her name.

Funeral services were Tuesday, February 26, 2008, 10:00 a.m. at the Indianola United Methodist Church with Pastor David Rowe and Jerry Beckenhauer officiating. Burial took place be in the Indianola cemetery.

Delphine May (Nokes) Remington

Delphine May Remington, age 80, died Tuesday, January 22, 2008 at Vista Grand Inn in Cortez, Colo.

She was born June 19, 1927 to Lee Roy and Odessa May (Grafton) Nokes in Red Willow County, Nebraska. She was full of energy and at one point she flew an airplane off of the barn.

She married Doran Dean Remington on April 6, 1947 in Oberlin, Kansas. To this union two daughters were born, Connie Lee and Diane Lorraine.

She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Cortez, Colo.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Lee and Odessa; husband, Doran (May 2003); four brothers, Marion, Winfred, Vernon, and her twin, Delbert; and one sister, Leola.

She is survived by two daughters, Connie Walter and husband, Roland of Dolores, Colo., Diane Dugger and husband, Murray of Aurora, Colo.; four grandchildren, Chad Tobiasson and wife, Jessica of Dolores, Colo., Amy Picray and husband, John of Monticello, Iowa, Darin Dugger and wife, Dana of Longmont, Colo., DeDee Mashek and husband, Phillip of Aurora, Colo.; and seven great-grandchildren.

Memorials were to be given in her name to the American Cancer Society.

Funeral services were Saturday, January 26, 2008, 10:00 a.m. at Carpenter Breland Funeral Home with Pastor John Strecker-Baseler officiating. Burial took place in the Lebanon cemetery.

Joseph Paul Reed

Joseph Paul Reed died Monday, March 24, 2008 at his home in Lincoln. He was 60 years old.

Joseph was born on June 1, 1947 in Muskegon, Michigan to Clare and Virginia (Mosher) Reed. He grew up on a farm near Muskegon. He moved to St. Joseph, Michigan when he was 17 to help his brother with a gas station. It was there he met Shirley Lowe and they were married on March 5, 1966. To this union three children were born.

Joe entered the US Army on August 3, 1966 and served during the Vietnam War. He spent his boot camp in Fort Knox, Kentucky and AIT in Colorado Springs, Colorado. He was stationed in Okinawa, Japan where he operated forklifts, straight trucks, semi-trucks and cranes. He was honorably discharged on July 26, 1968. He continued serving in the reserves until 1972.

In February of 1985, Joe came to Lincoln and met Jeannine Malleck. After being together for 11 years, they were married on February 27, 1996 in Las Vegas, Nevada. He worked and made his home in Lincoln.

Joe was a member of the American Legion. He loved food and gardening. He was a hunter, fisherman, card player, and gambler. He loved to spend time with his wife, children and grandchildren.

Preceding him in death were his parents, one granddaughter, Kassandra Reed; brothers, Jack and Tom Reed; father and mother-in-law, James and Genevieve Malleck; and sister-in-law, Judy Keith; brothers-in-law, Tom Malleck and Marvin Malleck.

Survivors include his wife, Jeannine Reed of Lincoln; son, Joeseph Reed II and wife, Amy, of Hartford, MI; two daughters, Julie and husband, Mike Modelewski, of Watervliet, MI and Laura and husband, Earl Joiner of Hartford, MI ; brother, Kenneth Reed and wife, Judy, of Vacaville, CA; sisters, Peggy and husband, Lester Reigler, Ginny and husband, Bob Semelbauer and Rosemary Kurtzer all of Muskegon.; sisters-in-law, Linda Reed of Meskegon, Vonda Parrott of Lincoln and Jane and husband, Dan Bahl of Indianola; brothers-in-law, Philip Malleck and Randy Keith of Indianola, Lonnie Malleck and wife, Jo, of Syracuse, KS, Dennis Malleck and wife, Marilyn, of Ness City, KS; sister-in-law, Judy Malleck of Central City; seven grandchildren; many nieces, nephews and a host of friends.

Memorials were to be given in his name.

Funeral services were Saturday, March 29, 2008, 10:00 a.m. at Carpenter Breland Chapel with Jerry Beckenhauer officiating. Burial took place in St. Catherine’s cemetery in Indianola with military honors.
