Velma B. Jones

Velma B. Jones, 85, of Lincoln, died July 7, 2011 in Lincoln. She was born November 6, 1925, in Clearwater, NE, to Cleo D. and Goldie M. (McVay) Jones. Velma was a member of Christ Temple Mission Church, Boy Scouts of America, missionary for World Gospel Mission for 18 years at Southwest Indian School of America. She was a secretary at UNL for 18 years and loved to sew and read the Bible.

Visitation: Visitation: 2-7 p.m. Sunday, July 10, 2011, at Metcalf Funeral Home, 245 North 27th Street, Lincoln, NE 68503.

Service: Funeral Service: 10:30 a.m. Monday, July 11, 2011, at Christ Temple Mission Church, 500 South 25th Street, Lincoln, NE, with Pastor Alan Jacobsen and Reverend Thomas Saddler officiating.

Family Includes: Sisters, Cleo Wissink, Twyla Burge; brother-in-law, Donald Wissink; many nieces and nephews; friend and companion Ruth Miller; and a large faith family.

Polly Ann Griess

Polly Griess, 65, wife of Jim Griess, died on July 7, 2011 from complications related to lung cancer. Polly was a lifelong teacher, having worked with the Hastings Public Schools, Lincoln Public Schools, and the Lincoln Regional Center. She retired in January 2007. Polly and her husband live in rural Lancaster County near Malcolm.

Visitation: Visitation will be held from 2-8 p.m. Monday, July 11, 2011, with family greeting friends from 6-8 p.m. at Metcalf Funeral Home, 245 North 27th Street, Lincoln, NE 68503, and 1 hour before services at the Church.

Service: Services to celebrate her life will be held at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, July 12, 2011, at Holy Savior Lutheran Church, 10th & Superior, Lincoln, NE.

cemetery: Burial will be held at Malcolm Community cemetery (West Bluff Road, 3 miles west of Highway 79).

Memorials: Memorials may be given to Holy Savior Lutheran Church, 4710 North 10th Street, Lincoln, NE 68521.

She is survived by her husband Jim, daughter and son-in-law, Rosalyn and John Beckman and grandson, Lucas, Malcolm; son and daughter-in-law, Gabriel and Kristie Griess, and grandson, Preston, Vacaville, CA; mother, DeEtta Newman, Central City, NE; sister, Jannet Furrow and John, Mullen, NE; brother, Rodney Newman, and friend, Kathy Calendrino, Hordville, NE; and numerous other family members.

Preceded in death by father, Paul, and sister, Lori.

Hedrick-Dale E., 92, Lincoln, died Friday (7-8-2011). Born, Waco, NE (6-1-1919) to Harry E. and Elsie M. (Hawley) Hedrick. Retired Construction Foreman, Lincoln Telephone and Telegraph. Elder Emeritus Southview Christian Church. World War II Navy Veteran. 50 year Mason, York, NE Lodge. Father of three Eagle Scouts and grandfather of one Eagle Scout. Married Dorothy A. Yost, June 21, 1940. Married for 61 years.

Visitation: Visitation: 2-8 p.m., Thursday (7-14-2011), Metcalf Funeral Home, 245 N. 27th St., with family greeting friends from 6-8 p.m.

Service: Services: 11:00a.m., Friday (7-15-2011), Southview Christian Church, 2040 S. 22nd St. (02), Pastors Kerry O’Bryant and Carol Collins officiating.

cemetery: Interment: 2:00 p.m., Friday, Waco cemetery, Waco, NE.

Vernon C. Riensche

Vernon C. Riensche, 91, Lincoln, passed away on Tuesday, July 19, 2011. He was born in Cook, NE on May 8, 1920 to Theodore and Caroline (Grundman) Riensche. Vernon was a veteran of WWII achieving the rank of Captain and serving as Honor Guard and Military base inspector. He was a member of VFW Post #131, and Friendship Force. Served various positions while a member at Our Saviour Lutheran Church and Hope Lutheran Church of Burr, NE. He retired from the State of Nebraska Corrections in 1987. Was an Admiral in the Great Navy of the State of Nebraska. Was a volunteer for Meals on Wheels as well as at Tabitha Rehabilitation. Vernon loved his family, woodworking, reading, traveling and music.

Visitation: Visitation will be from 5:00 pm- 8:00 pm on Thursday, July 21, 2011 at Metcalf Funeral Home, 245 N. 27th Street. Family will be present from 5:30 pm- 6:30 pm.

Service: Funeral Services will be at 9:30 am, Friday, July 22, 2011 at First Lutheran Church, 1551 South 70th Street with Pastor Harlin Heier officiating.

cemetery: Burial will be held at Hope Lutheran cemetery, Burr, NE.

Preceded in death by parents, first wife Ruth, brother Bernard, brother-in-law Gerald Sillman.

Jack Charles Alexander

Jack C. Alexander, 79, of Lincoln, passed away Monday, August 8, 2011, in Milford, NE. He was born September 15, 1931, in Longpine, NE, to Charles and Mary (Smith) Alexander. He was a US Army Veteran, and was a Foreman at Nash-Finch for 40 years, retiring in 1993.

Visitation: Cremation, no visitation.

Service: Memorial Service: 10:00 a.m. Friday, August 12, 2011, at Metcalf Funeral Home Chapel, 245 North 27th Street, Lincoln, NE 68503.

Family Includes: Wife, LaVerne, and son, Michael Alexander, both of Lincoln.

Preceded in death by parents, and sister, Neva Thompson.

Robert Logan

Robert (Bob) Logan, 70, Lincoln, NE died on August 17, 2011. He was born October 15, 1940 in Maryville, Mo. to James Lloyd Logan and Opal Laughlin Logan. He attended Maryville public schools and graduated from Mooresville High School, Mooresville, Mo. in 1958. He attended the University of Missouri. He was a long-haul truck driver for 32 years, working for Crete Carrier from 1984 until 2005. He was Crete Carrier Driver of the Year in 1989. As a sports lover, he was most proud of his Big Red Nebraska Cornhuskers and was a member of the Chancellors Club of the University of Nebraska Foundation. He loved country music, car racing, visiting with family and friends, and growing up on the farm. He enjoyed many friends in McAllen, Texas where they spent their winters.

Visitation: Visitation on Friday, Aug. 19, 2-8 p.m., with family greeting 6-8 p.m.

Service: Services will be held Saturday, Aug. 20, 1 p.m. at Metcalf Funeral Home, 27th & Q, Lincoln.

Memorials: Memorials to the University of Nebraska Alumni Association. or the charity of your choice.

He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Douglas A. Logan; sister, Beverly Bush, and two nephews and a niece. He is survived by his wife, Sally A. Logan; son, Daniel J. Logan and wife, Jeri and grandchildren Emma and Maxine Logan, Denver, CO; brothers, Kenneth Logan (Dee), Overland Park, Ks., and Dick Logan, Maryville, Mo.; sisters, Barbara Giffin, Lawrence, Ks., Linda Brown, Overland Park, Ks., Nila Simmons, Olathe, Ks., Pam Delnevo (Stewart), Springfield, Mo., and Patti (Glenn) Scheer, Durango, Ia.; sisters-in-law, Dorothea (Darrel) Boutz, Zendale, Ks., Pauline (Howard) Hynek, Endicott, Ne. Madeleine Brown, Clay Center, Ks. and Barbara Cook, Haddam, Ks.; brothers-in-law, Milton Henderson, Glasco, Ks.and Eldon (Katie) Henderson, Glasco, Ks.; and many nieces and nephews.

Ruth Merrill

Ruth Merrill, 87, of Lincoln, passed away Saturday, August 13, 2011, in Lincoln. She was born January 25, 1924, in Garfield, New Jersey, to Charles and Margaret Loshen.

Service: Cremation, no Service.

Dorothy Metcalf

Dorothy I. Metcalf, 88, Lincoln, died Tuesday (9-21-10). Born (1-30-22) in Lincoln, Nebraska to Earl R. and Edna V. (Turner) Martin. Attended Huntington Elementary School, Jackson Junior and Senior High School and the University of Nebraska finishing her schooling in Business College. Her employment included Western Electric, Executive Secretary for Howard Wilson, then President of Bankers Life Insurance Company, served as a clerk for Judge Herbert A. Ronin in the Lancaster County Court and as Deputy Clerk of the District Court. In October 1961, Dorothy partnered with her husband Bob to purchase and operate Metcalf Funeral Home which they owned until 1997. Dorothy was a member of the Lincoln Berean Church, Young at Heart (“YAH”), Starcraft Chapter #307, O.E.S., Naphis Temple #66, Daughters of the Nile, P.E.O. Chapter FQ, formerly served the Nebraska Grand Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star as Grand Representative (4 years) and as Grand Treasurer (7 years).

Visitation: Visitation beginning 3:00 p.m. Thursday with family greeting friends from 6:00 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. Friday at Metcalf Funeral Home.

Service: Celebration of Life Service: 11:00 a.m. Saturday (9-25-10) Metcalf Funeral Chapel, 245 North 27th Street. Pastor Bob Rice, officiating. Private family burial prior to service. interment.

Memorials: Memorials to University of Nebraska Foundation or Young at Heart Sunday School Class c/o Lincoln Berean Church.

Family members include son, daughter-in-law: Dr. K Ross and Joni Metcalf; daughter, son-in-law: Janice and William (”Mick”) Mickle II, all of Lincoln; grandchildren, spouses: Kara Mickle Schneible (Richard), Albany, NY Adam Mickle, Alyson Mickle (Raymond Ross), all of Lincoln, Grant Mickle, Ft. Campbell, KY, Jason (Nancy), Lincoln, Lindsey Metcalf Sauer (Andrew), Chicago, IL, Kirsti Oles (Josh) and Zachary Sims, all of Lincoln; great grandchildren: Isaac Mickle, Cali Ross, Payton Oles, Lucy Jane Ross and Isaiah Schneible; brother, sister-in-law: Robert E. and Darlene Martin, Lincoln; sisters-in-law, brother-in-law; many nieces, nephews and cousins. Preceded in death by husband Robert A. “Bob” Metcalf, parents, 3 sisters, sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law.

Mervyn "Butch" LeRoy Wilson

Mervyn “Butch” L. Wilson, 67, of Lincoln, died Tuesday, September 21, 2010. He was born January 12, 1943, in Beatrice, NE, to LeRoy and Vanida (Creek) Wilson. Mervyn was a retired mechanic at Alltel for 27 years. He was a member of VFW Post 131, American Legion, and the NRA.

Visitation: Visitation: 2-7 p.m. with family greeting friends from 5-7 p.m. Sunday, September 26, 2010, at Metcalf Funeral Home.

Service: Funeral Service: 1:00 p.m. Monday, September 27, 2010, at Metcalf Funeral Home Chapel, 245 North 27th Street, Lincoln, NE 68503.

cemetery: Burial will be at 3:30 p.m. at Pawnee City cemetery.

Memorials: Memorials may be given to VFW Post 131.

Timothy Francis Fitzsimmons

Timothy F. Fitzsimmons, 50, of Lincoln, died Thursday, October 7, 2010, in Lincoln. He was born July 6, 1960, in Portsmouth, VA, to William E. and Betty (Nauenburg) Fitzsimmons.

Service: Memorial Service: 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, October 27, 2010, at St. Anthony’s Catholic cemetery, in Cedar Rapids, NE. There will be a luncheon following the service.

Preceded in death by his father, William E. Fitzsimmons.

Delmar "Pinky" E. Watermeier

Delmar E. (Pinky) Watermeier, 84, of Lincoln, Neb., died Saturday, October 9, 2010. He was born on Sept. 24, 1926 to Edwin and Emma Watermeier. Pinky was a veteran of WWII, retired from the State of Nebraska, Dept. of Roads, and a beloved husband, father and Grandpa.

Service: Funeral Mass, 11 a.m. Wednesday, North American Martyrs Catholic Church, Lincoln. Memorials: Salvation Army. Metcalf Funeral Home, 245 No. 27th St., Lincoln

Survived by: wife, Rose Watermeier of Lincoln; Son, Ron and wife Sharles Watermeier of Lincoln, Son, Dave and wife Terri Watermeier of Lincoln, Son, Duane "Bub" Watermeier of Lincoln, Son, Lyle and wife Penny Watermeier of Lincoln, Son, Les and wife Barb Watermeier of Omaha, Daughter Gail and husband Tom Hiskey of Lincoln, Son, Darrel and wife NaKia Watermeier of Lincoln; along with 12 grandchildren, Sister, Opal Litsey of Lincoln, Sister, LaVern Hanneman of Lincoln, and Sister, Ardyth Wolfe of Lincoln. Preceded in death by parents and brother Alvin.

Wilbert "Web" George Swartz

Wilbert “Web” Swartz, 81, of Lincoln, died Sunday, October 24, 2010, in Lincoln. He was born May 14, 1929, in Pocatella, ID, to Gilbert and Mabel (Wallen) Swartz. Wilbert was the owner of All Aluminum Window Co. since 1950, and a member of East Lincoln Christian Church and the Masonic Lodge, and served in the Marines.

Visitation: Visitation: Wednesday, October 27, 2010, at Metcalf Funeral Home, 245 North 27th Street, Lincoln, NE 68503, from 2:00-8:00 p.m. with family greeting friends from 6:00-8:00 p.m.

Service: Funeral Service: 10:00 a.m. Thursday, October 28, 2010, at East Lincoln Christian Church, 7001 Edenton Road, Lincoln, NE 68516, with Rev. Dr. Rebecca Z. Brown officiating.

Everett Clyde Owens

Everett C. Owens, 87, of Lincoln, died Friday, October 29, 2010 in Lincoln. 37 year retail route man with Robert’s Dairy. He was born May 2, 1923 in Lincoln, NE to Vern and Minnie (Woods) Owens. He attended Hawthorne, Whittier, and Lincoln Northeast High School, graduating in 1941. He was a bus driver/trainer for LPS from 1973-1986. He was a member of East Lincoln Lodge #210 AF & AM, Scottish Rite Temple and Sesostris Temple of the Shrine. He was in the U.S. Army 1942-1946 participating in the “Battle of the Bulge”.

Visitation: Visitation will be Monday, 2-8 p.m. with the family greeting friends from 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Service: Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday, November 2, 2010 at Metcalf Funeral Home, 245 North 27th Street, Lincoln, NE, with Rev. Dr. Robert Chitwood, officiating.

Memorials: Memorials may be given to the American Heart Association, Shriner’s Hospital or Susan G. Komen for the Cure.

Gerald Henry Tekolste

Gerald H. Tekolste, 92, of Firth, died Monday, November 1, 2010, at Gold Crest Retirement Center. He was born October 31, 1918 in Firth, NE to Henry and Bertha (TenHulzen) Tekolste. He was a life long member of the Firth Reformed Church, member of the American Legion Post 295, and Gideons International. He was former Firth mayor and Village board member. He worked from 1935 to 1991 at the State Bank of Firth in banking and insurance. He was WWII U.S. veteran from 1942 to 1945.

Visitation: Visitation: 2-8 p.m. Wednesday, November 3, 2010 at Metcalf Funeral Home, 309 Nemaha Street, Firth, NE with family greeting friends from 6-8 p.m. and one hour before services at the church.

Service: Funeral Service: 1:00 p.m. Thursday, November 4, 2010 at Firth Reformed Church, 603 Russell Street, Lincoln, NE 68358 with Pastor Jon Garbison officiating.

cemetery: Burial will be at the Firth cemetery.

Memorials: Memorials may be given to the Firth Reformed Church.

Kenneth Augustine Bordeaux

Kenneth A. Bordeaux, 85, of Lincoln, died Monday, November 1, 2010, in Lincoln. He was born March 22, 1925, in White River, SD, to Alexander and Mary (Jordan) Bordeaux Jr. Kenneth was a Native Spiritual Counselor and an activist that fought for the preservation of the Native American culture. He was a Sicangu Lakota pipe carrier and medicine man. He also worked as a Field Representative for the Equal Opportunity Commission and was Program Director for the Nebraska Indian Commission. Kenneth served in the Navy for four years and is a WWII veteran.

Visitation: Visitation: 1 hour prior to service.

Service: Funeral Service: 11:00 a.m. Friday, November 5, 2010, at the Indian Center, 1100 Military Road, Lincoln, NE 68508, with Reverend Allen Kitteau officiating, followed by a traditional ceremony by Spotted Tail.

cemetery: Burial will be held at later date in Wilber, NE.

Memorials: Memorials may be given to the Indian Center.

Family Included: Son, Beaumont Bordeaux, daughter, Charlotte Knoflicek, son, Roger W. Bordeaux, 2 grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
Preceded in death by wife, Orpha Clara Bordeaux.
