Her second brother was born ten years later, and shortly after his birth, her mother passed away. Her youngest brother went to live with cousins who resided six miles away, while Ruth and her other brother stayed on the farm with their father. Despite the distance her family was very close and saw each other often. Ruth attended District 44 from first grade until eighth grade. She enjoyed attending the one-room school and remembers riding there in a horse-pulled buggy or bobsled when the weather was poor. She attended one year of high school, but decided to stay home to take care of her cousins’ children. During that time, she learned how to bake bread, clean and take care of new mothers. Through a friend, she met her future husband, Harold, at the State Fair. They dated for six months before they decided to elope. She remembers riding on the caboose to get across the state line because she wasn’t old enough to get married
in Nebraska. When they returned home as a married
couple, the family was very surprised and accepting. Ruth and Harold resided in Firth, Nebraska. They had seven children and adopted one child. They also fostered 26 children in less than four years. Ruth went back to school and earned her GED, then went on to earn a degree in nursing. She worked as an LPN for about 35 years. Ruth states she has always enjoyed caring for people.
